Talladega Drops the Restrictor Plates, Raises the Spoiler

I

n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us preview of Talladega. This year will be the first time in decades running a NASCAR race without restrictor plates on the engines. First up, we have some new drivers making their Cup debuts this weekend in Alabama. There’s Jeffrey Earnhardt, starting in the 81 car we’ve seen quite a bit already this season in the Xfinity Series. His team, powered by Xtreme Concepts and iK9, will be running at both Talladega’s this year. The car has had great runs already, and with Talladega Superspeedway known for its equalizing properties, it’s possible we’ll see some exciting runs out of Earnhardt. It doesn’t hurt that the team

is formally aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing, arguably the strongest team in NASCAR today. But the biggest story of all is the fact that this Talladega will be run entirely without restrictor plates on the engines. The plates are normally used on superspeedways in order to limit the air intake of the engine, and thus dramatically reduce horsepower. This has the effect of slowing down the car in order to maintain safe speeds. So without plates, what is NASCAR’s solution? Check out the video as Eric walks us through this weekend’s package. Will we see the return of two car tandem drafting? Will we see nothing but bump drafting all weekend? Check out the video to hear Eric’s take.

The (Virtually Inevitable) “Big One”

E

very driver dreads the “Big One,” which is the moniker most closely associated with the major and sometimes downright frightening multicar wrecks that occur at Talladega Superspeedway. The “Big One” is prone to wipe out as much as half of the field or more and send cars flying through the air, often landing on top of each other or upside down. The worst part of the “Big One” might be the fact that there’s simply no way for drivers to avoid it, as they are like sitting ducks at the mercy of the draft — and luck. About the only way to guarantee missing one of Talladega’s vaunted multi-car crashes is choosing to run at the back of the pack, behind everyone. That strategy is risky, however, because deliberately dropping to the rear can cause a driver to lose the draft — and with it, his shot at victory.

Goodbye, Restrictor Plates & Hello, Tapered Spacers

F

or the first time since 1987, NASCAR’s premier series is set to compete at a superspeedway without horsepower-choking restrictor plates. However, the cars will feature a smaller tapered spacer and increased aerodynamic downforce to reduce speeds. The cumulative effect of the smaller spacer, larger spoilers and splitters, and the new 2019 aero ducts is expected to reduce horsepower and increase drag to replicate the traditional brand of close-quarters, big-pack racing seen over the past three decades at Talladega Superspeedway and Daytona International Speedway. Of course, it’s also possible that Sunday’s field will be more strung out than is typical for Talladega and the race will play out more like one that customarily takes place at Michigan International Speedway or Las Vegas Motor Speedway, for example. Only this much is certain: For the first time in a long time, restrictor plates won’t factor into the mix at NASCAR’s longest track.

A Surprise Winner

I

f there’s one venue on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule that is ripe for producing a surprise winner or even a first-time winner, it’s Talladega. This is a result of the Alabama track’s propensity for heavy attrition and the fact that finding the right drafting partner at the right time often plays a key role in the final outcome. Don’t have the fastest car? Don’t have the most experience? Don’t sweat it. Just get a push from someone who has a lot of speed, and there’s a pretty good chance you will end up at or near the front. At Talladega, more so than any other track, it’s rare that the best car or even the most talented driver goes to Victory Lane. Instead, it’s usually a driver who manages to keep his proverbial nose clean and ends up getting a big shove when it matters most — the final lap.

A Nailbiter of a Finish

T

alladega Superspeedway has been the site of some of the most thrilling finishes in NASCAR history, and this weekend’s race should be no exception, provided the 2019 rules package produces the brand of racing that it’s expected to produce at the high-banked, high-speed tri-oval. Unlike at most tracks, where it’s pretty clear just a few laps into the race who the major contenders are going to be, a driver can seemingly come out of nowhere in the final laps at Talladega if he gets in the right drafting line and knows how to work the draft to his advantage. With so many drivers jockeying for position, usually while running three- or four-wide in a tight pack consisting of practically the entire field, the margin of victory at Talladega tends to be razorthin — sometimes even a matter of inches and requiring a replay to see who actually crossed the finished line first.

A Continuation Of Penske’s ‘Dega Dominance

T

eam Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski are off to a terrific start in 2019, collectively winning three of the first nine races and ranking second and fifth, respectively, in the standings. Logano and Keselowski have also combined to win six of the past nine races at Talladega, with each driver going to Victory Lane three times over that stretch. Don’t expect anything less from the Team Penske boys on Sunday, when they will look to slow down Joe Gibbs Racing — winners of the six races not won by a Penske driver this season. Logano and Keselowski will also have to deal with Stewart-Haas Racing, which made it a clean sweep of the top two finishing positions at Talladega last fall when SHR’s Aric Almirola went to Victory Lane after edging teammate Clint Bowyer. But this weekend, it’s likely that everyone will be chasing Logano, Keselowski, or both.

drivers to watch at Talladega

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Aric Almirola. Aric Almirola is a two-time winner in NASCAR’s premier series. Perhaps not coincidentally, both of his victories have come at superspeedways — the first at Daytona in July 2014 and the most recent last fall at Talladega, where he led only the final lap. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. Brad Keselowski has won five of the 20 races he’s entered at Talladega, the track where he earned premier series career victory No. 1 in controversial fashion back in 2009. Keselowski leads all active drivers in Talladega victories, with his most recent coming in the fall of 2017. ▶▶ Joey Logano. Joey Logano has scored three Talladega victories, all of them coming since 2015 and the most recent coming last spring. The reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion also won the 2015 Daytona 500, making him one of the most successful superspeedway racers in recent times. ▶▶ Denny Hamlin. Denny Hamlin won this year’s Daytona 500, making it two victories at The World Center of Racing in the past four years. He’s also a former winner at Talladega, having prevailed at the 2.66-mile high-banked track in the spring of 2014. He finished fourth at ‘Dega last fall. ▶▶ Chase Elliott. Despite being winless at both Talladega and Daytona, Chase Elliott always seems to be fast at the superspeedways where his father, Bill, enjoyed some of his greatest moments — which included setting the sport’s all-time speed record of 212.809 mph at Talladega in 1987.

A Simple Bump and Run Edwards Wins Against Teammate Kyle Busch At Richmond By Ben white

O

n April 24, 2016, Carl Edwards, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, led seven times for 151 of 400 laps of the Toyota Owners 400 to win at Richmond International Raceway. It was the 27th of 28 career victories in NASCAR’s premier Cup series. Edwards survived eight caution periods for 49 laps and found himself trailing teammate Kyle Busch with 35 remaining. With each pass of the start-finish line, Edwards inched closer to Busch’s rear bumper until making his move for the lead on the final lap. As the two drivers reached the fourth turn, Edwards bumped Busch’s Toyota and made the move for the win with the checkered flag in sight.

Talladega PReview: April 25, 2019

“Really, to be honest, the last, what, 30 laps or something, I was just head down driving as hard as I possibly could,” Edwards said. “The first opportunity to get that close to him was the last lap and really the last corner.” When asked if he had any reservations about being aggressive against his teammate, Edwards said, “We’re here to win the race. You can either finish first or second. It’s a tough decision. Really it’s about just going out for trophies and having fun. We still finished first and second. Nobody got wrecked. If the roles were reversed, I’d expect him to bump me the same way. That’s hard racing.”

msg: making racing safer TM

By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”

0 3 0

Talladega PReview: April 25, 2019

A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.

health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction

therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”

Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

A

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 4 8

Talladega PReview: April 25, 2019

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
