THREE WIDE FINISH AT VIRTUAL DEGA! In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his review and analysis of this weekend’s eNASCAR Pro Invitational race at virtual Talladega. This was a special race back at Dega, featuring not one but two No. 24 cars - one with its regular driver William Byron, and the other featuring the legendary Jeff Gordon. While Gordon didn’t end up performing the 0 0 4

best in the race, the show was still stellar thanks to the FOX broadcast. Eric again gives us his take about what Mike Joy and the gang continue to get right about these esports events. But that’s not all in this episode! Eric also gives us his take on the news that Ryan Newman will be returning to racing. Plus, where did this virtual Talladega fall on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

THINGS WE LEARNED AT TALLADEGA (IRACING STYLE) Prior to Sunday’s GEICO 70 at the virtual Talladega Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports seemingly owned the headlines with the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series. With William Byron’s back-to-back wins at Bristol and Richmond, the Charlotte, N.C. native seemed like the man to beat. However, a new challenger entered this competitive digital series by way of Jeff Gordon, the man who brought the No. 24 into the spotlight. However, Byron and Gordon wouldn’t drive their way into Victory Lane. With Bowman winning from the 22nd spot, here’s five storylines from Talladega. BY ROB TIONGSON

GORDON’S RETURN BROUGHT JOY DESPITE TOUGH FINISH

S

eriously, who would’ve imagined that Jeff Gordon, retired since the 2016 NASCAR Cup Series season, would make his “return” to stock car action with the Pro Invitational Series? Then again, when you are the owner of 93 Cup Series win and four championships, an invitation would seem warranted for this NASCAR legend. Still, Gordon’s credentials didn’t necessarily mean that he’d be a surefire pick for the GEICO 70. Despite some of his competitors voicing their reservations about the 48-year-old’s presence in the race, he fought his way from the 29th starting spot to 10th before a Lap 11 crash sent his No. 24 Pepsi Chevrolet Camaro into the virtual Turn 3 catchfence. Although Gordon used his only “reset” and hovered just below the top-20, it seemed like he was biding his time. While Gordon placed 38th and nine laps off the pace, his return brought smiles to many race fans.

UNDERDOGS PASS TALLADEGA TEST WITH TOP-10 RESULTS

J

ust like real life Talladega, its virtual counterpart handsomely rewarded some of NASCAR’s unsung underdogs like Corey LaJoie, the race’s pole sitter, Ryan Preece, Garrett Smithley, Landon Cassill, and Brennan Poole with stellar top-10 finishes. Certainly, Smithley and Cassill have been consistent top-10 finishers since the start of the Pro Invitational Series. However, when considering such a feat on the actual track, their strong results would’ve been like a heralded victory for the ages. The same could be for Poole, a hardy driver whose perseverance has truly paid off with his full-time Cup Series ride with Premium Motorsports. This quintet raced wisely and patiently, almost to the point that you could say they drove flawlessly for the 74-lap race. While it’s unknown if the Pro Invitational Series continues following next Sunday’s race at virtual Dover, it’s certain that they’ll be front-runners at the digital version of “The Monster Mile.”

TEAMWORK DIDN’T MAKE DREAM WORK AT TALLADEGA

J

ust ask Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer, FOX NASCAR’s in-race driver analysts, if the maxim that teamwork making the dream work held up during the GEICO 70. Even without any stakes on the line, and certainly by accident, their teammates played a small role with their results. While Bowyer didn’t help his case by causing his original virtual motor to overheat while in the lead, a collision with teammate Aric Almirola during a late race caution hampered his efforts. Meanwhile, Gordon’s teammate, Chase Elliott, tangled with Brennan Poole on Lap 57. As the two cars lost control, Gordon had nowhere to go but into the Turn 2 wall. Superspeedway racing is a game of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Additionally, on a hilarious note, Bowyer seems to be playfully defying the suggestions of Larry McReynolds, his de facto crew chief. Maybe they’ll sort things out for Dover.

RYAN NEWMAN ANNOUNCES RETURN UPON NASCAR’S RESUMPTION

B

efore the start of the GEICO 70, Ryan Newman appeared on the telecast to announce his return to racing upon the resumption of NASCAR’s on-track activities. While FOX NASCAR’s Bob Pockrass made mention that NASCAR has not quite medically cleared Newman to race, the 2002 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year was all smiles and enthusiastic about his pending return to the track. In a truly bizarre year, not only for NASCAR, but for real life in our world, Newman’s progress and recovery has been some of the best news around. Now, knowing that Newman seems ready to race and working towards gaining medical clearance to return to his No. 6 Ford Mustang, it’s safe to say that he’ll be one of the biggest stories to watch when Cup Series racing resumes. As Newman continues to make strides with his return, so can we with our outlook with life.

BOWMAN TAKES TALLADEGA TRIUMPH FOR TEAM HENDRICK

W

hether it’s his beard or simply the fact that Alex Bowman’s simply a more confident, focused driver, the two-time Cup Series race winner claimed his first Pro Invitational Series race victory in grand fashion. Starting 22nd, Bowman brought the goods for the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports team. Leading eight of the 74 laps run on Sunday, Bowman kept his Camaro towards the front of the field while making helpful pushes with anyone in the main pack. Even with his concern about fuel towards the end of the race, Bowman played his cards right and raced like his predecessor during his glory years. Much like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Bowman’s car seemed to be quite “wide” towards the finish once he was in the lead. Racing towards the stripe in a finish that almost resembled the 1981 and 2011 spring races at Talladega Superspeedway, Bowman was truly a showman for Hendrick Motorsports.

KUDOS TO BUBBA WALLACE FOR STANDING HIS GROUND

Bubba Wallace, who received sharp Twitter criticism from both a sponsor and fans for his abrupt exit from an iRacing event earlier this month at a virtual Bristol Motor Speedway, announced leading up to Sunday’s iRace at Talladega that he planned to sit out the event because he simply felt “burn out” with the whole iRacing spectacle. Kudos to Bubba for not caving into peer pressure, which it appears at least a few of his fellow drivers have done. If a driver’s heart isn’t in iRacing, there’s just no reason to participate. JA RED TURNER ▶  ALEX BOWMAN DESERVES A CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH HENDRICK It was a weekend of mixed impressions for Alex Bowman, who won the iRacing Pro Invitational Series race at a virtual Talladega Superspeedway but revealed that his future with Hendrick Motorsports for 2021 and beyond remains very much in question — despite his impressive early-season victory at the real (not virtual) Auto Club Speedway. Let’s hope that this changes soon, as Bowman’s success with Hendrick in each of the past two seasons along with the early part of 2020 makes him more than deserving of a contract extension — sponsorship and COVID-19 uncertainties notwithstanding.

■■ Bubba Wallace took the weekend off from iRacing.

▶  THANK YOU, RYAN NEWMAN Some of the most heartwarming news to hit the NASCAR world in quite some time came to light Sunday when Ryan Newman told FOX Sports that he expects to be medically cleared to race by the time NASCAR returns to competition — presumably sometime in May. At a time when NASCAR fans are clamoring for something positive to which they can cling, it doesn’t get any better than learning that Newman, who suffered non-life threatening injuries in a horrific crash on the final lap of February’s Daytona 500, has essentially made a full recovery.

IN THE HOTSEAT

IN THE HOT SEAT Ryan Luza BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with Ryan Luza, driver of the No. 53 Williams eSports Ford Mustang. ▶  LAST YEAR, YOU RACED FOR ONE OF THE BEST, WELL KNOWN ENASCAR RACE TEAMS. THIS YEAR, YOU’RE DRIVING FOR WILLIAMS ESPORTS. WHAT’S IT MEAN TO CARRY THEIR COLORS IN ENASCAR? It’s cool to do that for these guys. It’s cool, especially to have this success that we’re having this year with Williams. The first two races were disappointing. Daytona is Daytona so I didn’t really expect too much there because it’s random. Then we went to California and got wrecked. That was disappointing. I was second guessing how this year was going to be. But then we won three straight races. I’m happy with the entire year so far even with California going the way that it did. It means a lot to be winning with the Williams eSports team. We’re sitting second in the team championship standings. If we can keep running well, we’ll bring home the team championship for Williams eSports. ▶  WILLIAM BYRON AND TY MAJESKI PARLAYED THEIR SUCCESS IN IRACING FOR THEIR OPPORTUNITIES IN NASCAR. DO YOU SEE IRACING AS AN AUDITION WITH ON-TRACK NASCAR TEAM OWNERS? I mean, I don’t know how many of them are thinking like that. But if they are, that’s great to hear. The better races that we can put on as a series, that helps a lot. I know Richmond was kind of caution heavy but usually our races are top-tier races. I love watching them back on the broadcast as it’s professional and well done. Hopefully, we can gain more respect, viewers, and exposure if everyone can just work together to keep it growing so we can realize opportunities that could become available for us.

Me and Jeff Gordon hanging out at the 1999 Pop Secret 400 at The Rock

While it may be easy for race fans to get a picture of themselves with their favorite driver while they’re on the track, high_pants13 has an awesome photo of himself with Jeff Gordon zipping by at Rockingham Speedway back in 1999. For the younger race fans who might view 1999 as ancient times, well, in all honesty, for some of us, getting that perfect shot with cameras at the time was truly a shot in the dark, no pun intended.

I wonder what Mark Martin’s favorite motor oil is...

This is quite a good catch by SkyfallCamaro and something that truly shows how resilient and competitive “Mr. Consistency” was in his NASCAR career. Come to think of it, Martin basically drove for basically every manufacturer and sported various motor oil companies on his firesuit and racecar. While his firesuit brand may have changed over the years, when it comes to Martin at his best, it gets no better than the Batesville, Ark. native in that No. 6 Valvoline Ford. 0 2 2

Does anyone remember the nascar diecast shops? They were amazing they had a lot of stuff diecast, Merch, etc.?

Balake0802 brought Reddit users back to memory lane earlier in the week when asking fans if they remember specialty NASCAR die-cast stores. Remember when Coca-Cola C2 sponsored EIGHT teams?

Gosh, this was quite a hilarious moment even back in the summer of 2004. When Pepsi sponsored Daytona’s second summer race at the time, Coca-Cola sponsored eight Cup drivers and teams, essentially causing a “soda war.” Ultimately, it came down to quality, not quantity as Gordon defeated the Coke drivers.

TWEETSTORM COMPILED BY ROB TIONGSON

▶  Seriously, where’s the respect for Alex Bowman? Evidently, the Arizonan was admonished for somehow driving through the pace car during the GEICO 70. With this hilarious tweet, it made some folks wonder why he doesn’t have a Twitch or live stream. His tweets alone provide us with a side to Bowman that’s quite funny, and relatable in a time when NASCAR’s looking for the “good guy.” Plus, when Bowman wins, so do his lovable canine friends in Roscoe and Finn. 0 2 6

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: APR. 27, 2020

▶  Ultimately, as Denny Hamlin said, “it’s just kids.” In this case, Hamlin’s daughter accidentally turns off the Samsung monitors from his simulator rig. While Hamlin’s race was quite a struggle, it’s safe to say that a TV turning off by accident must be the most hilarious reason for a DNF. Sure, Hamlin was mad, but he’s hopefully cooled off after this blooper. After all, how many of us did an “oopsie” to a parent or sibling when we were kids?

▶  Captain America, or in this case, Parker Kligerman, suited up for battle at the virtual Talladega following the 24 Hours of Nürburgring with the NASBOIS. Seriously, if his incredible energy and enthusiasm for motorsports hasn’t warranted the attention of a NASCAR team owner when racing resumes, who knows what will!

▶  Somehow, Clint Bowyer never fails to disappoint with his always entertaining takes during each Pro Invitational Series race. This time, Bowyer led, blew his motor, and he crashed towards the finish of the GEICO 70. Seriously, iRacing needs to provide Bowyer with a digital crew chief that’ll eat ice cream.

▶  It appears that the incredible Rodney Sandstorm switched his fandom over from Jeff Gordon to Dale Earnhardt Jr. When Earnhardt was asked about having Jordan Taylor on his podcast, the former expressed enthusiasm with such an idea. Maybe Rodney Sandstorm will sport frosted tips and a goatee for his appearance.
