The Glory Days of NASCAR Return In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp has quite a bit to say about this weekend’s race at Talladega. This year was the first race at a super speedway in quite some time, 32 years in fact, that didn’t have restrictor plates on the engines. Instead, NASCAR found another solution to slowing the cars down to safe speeds around the track. Huge spoilers nearly a foot high off the rear helped keep the cars safely around 200mph. So how was the racing with this new rules package? If the popular feedback is to be believed, it seemed to result in some of the best racing we’ve seen in decades. Unfortunately, the TV broadcast

took the brunt of the criticism then, as fans didn’t want to look away from the amazing on-track action. Chase Elliott’s win was also one of the highlight moments, with some much profound meaning for the sport wrapped up in an otherwise unremarkable win under caution. Not only was the prodigal son’s performance a sight to behold, but taken in combination with some of the best super speedway racing we’ve seen since the 1990’s, and this was an important moment for NASCAR as a sport. With all the fanfare, how did this race rank on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? There have already been a number of highly ranked races on the gauge so far this season, where will Talladega rank? You’ll have to watch the video and find out!

The “Big One”— Or Something Similar — Struck Again
W
hile Sunday’s race at Talladega didn’t necessarily feature one particular multicar wreck, or “Big One,” that will be the subject of this week’s office water cooler discussions, the 188lap affair featured no dearth of significant accidents, the second of which necessitated an 8-minute, 47-second red flag period for cleanup. When all the dust settled, the caution flag waved only three times for wrecks, but all three were on the wilder size. The final accident, which occurred on the final lap and involved five cars, was especially unnerving — especially for Kyle Larson fans, who saw their driver’s No. 42 Chevrolet bounce off the inside retaining wall and flip wildly, end-overend, several times before finally coming to rest. “That was probably the longest flip I’ve ever had,” the Chip Ganassi Racing driver said. “I didn’t know if it would ever stop. … It was a little bit scary, but thankfully, I’m alright.”

Hendrick Motorsports Is Making Strides
M
ired in a 13-race winless streak extending back to October 2018, Hendrick Motorsports came to Talladega Superspeedway on a mission to break out of its slump and have something to celebrate. Mission accomplished. Winless in the first nine races of 2019, Team Hendrick finished 1-2 at Talladega as Chase Elliott took the victory followed closely by teammate Alex Bowman. Elliott and Bowman also combined to lead 52 of the 188 laps even as fellow Hendrick mates Jimmie Johnson and William Byron were non-factors. As a result of his win, Elliott has now secured a berth in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. While there’s no doubt that success at the superspeedways often doesn’t translate elsewhere, just the morale boost that inevitably comes from a 1-2 finish should go a long way toward helping the entire Hendrick organization right the ship from what was a rough opening quarter of the 2019 season.

Bubba And David Ragan Screwed Up—And Admitted It
T
he first of three multi-car wrecks on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway started when Bubba Wallace lost control of his No. 43 Chevrolet while running in a big pack of cars. Wallace, who saw his own day end in the fray, later took responsibility. “All I was trying to do was just some wreck avoidance,” he said. “I didn’t want to wad up the No. 12 (Ryan Blaney). That’s the last car I want to wad up out there. It’s just unfortunate, but I tried not to wreck my buddy, Ryan, and it cost our day and some others.” The last of the day’s trio of big accidents came on the final lap when David Ragan made contact with William Byron. “I just got loose and wrecked the 24 (Byron),” Ragan said. “I spun him out across my nose and he collected a few other cars. That last wreck was my fault.”

The Underdogs Left A Strong Impression
S
unday’s final finishing order was notable for several reasons, not the least of which was the fact that the top five featured three drivers in search of their first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory. Two of those drivers — rookies Ryan Preece (third-place) and Daniel Hemric (fifth-place) had never even finished in the top five. Meanwhile, second-place finisher Alex Bowman had never finished in the top five at a superspeedway. While underdogs tend to fair reasonably well at Talladega due to the track’s close-quarters racing and tendency for high attrition, Sunday’s finishes by Bowman, Preece and Hemric shouldn’t be lost on anyone. “It was awesome,” Preece said at Talladega. “I was only here one other time, and that was in an Xfinity Series car in 2016, and I was running third with three to go and went for the hole and got flushed (wrecked). So, I wasn’t going to do that today.”

Chase Elliott Can Get It Done At A Superspeedway
S
ince first strapping in a car as a full-time Hendrick Motorsports driver, Chase Elliott has always been fast at the superspeedways. After all, as a Monster Energy Series rookie in 2016, he won the pole for the Daytona 500 and then repeated that feat in his second season. But prior to Sunday’s race at Talladega, Elliott had never managed to translate speed into much meaningful success at NASCAR’s two fastest tracks. This time was different, however, as Elliott led a race-high 44 laps and seemed to put his No. 9 Chevrolet in all the right places at the right times. The result was a popular victory in front of a very pro-Elliott crowd and a welcome reprieve from his struggles to get the most out of equipment capable of going to Victory Lane at Talladega and Daytona. “It’s just nice to get a superspeedway win,” he said. “We’ve been close and had some really fast cars.”

Just Sayin’ The Talladega crowd brought the sport to life this weekend.
This Talladega Race Was Just What NASCAR Needed By Jared Turner
A
A season that up until this point could be remembered for empty grandstands, a dearth of particularly memorable moments, and a less-than-satisfying on-track product suddenly found new life on Sunday afternoon. For that, you can thank the one and only Talladega Superspeedway, host to Race No. 10 of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series campaign. Instead of rows upon rows of vacant seats, TV cameras showed mostly packed grandstands and the kind of racing that fans everywhere crave but rarely get these days. The combination of this year’s taller spoilers and tapered spacers, the latter of which replaced the familiar restrictor plates traditionally used at both Talladega and Daytona, proved to create the perfect combination for great racing that, as an added bonus, was absent any wrecks of the overly violent nature. Thirty-nine lead changes among 15 different drivers under warm sunny skies made for just about the perfect afternoon at

the 2.66-mile, high-banked track known for some of the most thrilling — and frightening — outcomes in NASCAR history. Heck, even the folks from race entitlement sponsor GEICO had to be pleased, when Ty Dillon — driver of the No. 13 GEICOsponsored Chevrolet — won the first of the race’s three stages. Then, to put the icing on the cake, fan-favorite Chase Elliott prevailed for the first time this season and for the first time ever at Talladega — a place not all that far from his hometown of Dawsonville, Georgia, in both distance and way of life. The boisterous but friendly reception that the secondgeneration driver received after getting out of his car a winner spoke to just how much the fans approved of what they had witnessed. In short: This was just the kind of day that NASCAR desperately needed. Let’s hope the good vibes don’t go away as quickly as a lap around ‘Dega.

eNASCAR Drivers Take on Talladega Ottinger Takes the Checkers Four Wide By M atteo M archeschi

his week, the NASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the 2.66-mile oval known as Talladega Superspeedway. It’s no secret that Talladega produces some of the best racing on the circuit, and this race was no different. The monkeywrench thrown in this season is the new rules package, which has been run a couple of times this season: 550 HP engines and aero ducts, along with much larger spoilers than last season. This is what

the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series ran on Sunday, but on Tuesday, when the Peak Series hit the track, the drivers were sailing into uncharted waters. As the green flag flew, it was Joe Gibbs Racing driver Bobby Zalenski up front, alongside Wood Brothers Racing driver Chris Overland. However, it became clear early on that qualifying wouldn’t be all that important. In the 94-lap event, the lead changed a

These cautions included a couple of multi-car incidents, but 33 of the 40 cars finished on the lead lap, with 29 of them within three seconds of the leader. However, the biggest highlight was the finish. As the field came around turns three and four on the final lap, it was JR Motorsports pilot Brad Davies alongside JTG Daughtery’s Nick Ottinger. As they reached the tri-oval, Renegades driver Garrett Lowe made a dive to the inside of both. The move worked until Blake Reynolds of Team Dillon eSports tried

to make it four-wide between Davies and Lowe, sending Davies spinning across the line. As drivers scattered to avoid the incident, it was Ottinger that would grab the victory in a four-wide finish, his first victory this season. Those top four finished 0.067 seconds apart, with three-time victor and series points leader Michael Luza in second, followed by the wrecking Lowe and Davies. Mode Motorsports driver Cody Byus finished fifth. The series returns to the track on Tuesday, May 7th, at 9 PM eastern time at Kansas Speedway. The race can be viewed on YouTube and Twitch.

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 2 6
Talladega rearview: April 29, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
