A Possible End To Jimmie Johnson’s Drought
M
ired in the longest drought of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career, Jimmie Johnson hasn’t been to Victory Lane in nearly two years. The site of his last victory? Dover International Speedway, where he owns a record 11 wins and most recently prevailed on June 2, 2017. On that day, the Hendrick Motorsports driver won for the 83rd time in NASCAR’s premier series, tying the legendary Cale Yarborough for sixth on the all-time wins list. Johnson’s next trip to Victory Lane will be his 84th points-paying win and would tie NASCAR Hall of Famers Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison for fourth all-time. Johnson is currently 10 wins behind former Hendrick teammate Jeff Gordon, who has 93 victories and is third on the wins list. Sunday’s race will mark Johnson’s first start at Dover with first-year crew chief Kevin Meendering. It may be their best opportunity all year to get a win.

Chase Elliott’s Pursuit Of Back-To-Back Wins
G
ood luck finding a driver this weekend with more bounce in his step than Chase Elliott. Along with just notching his first win of the season last Sunday at Talladega, the Hendrick Motorsports driver is returning to a place where he is the most recent race winner, having prevailed at Dover last fall. Elliott, however, is guarded against setting any overly optimistic expectations for this weekend. “Just because we won at Dover last year doesn’t mean we’re going to go run good there, too,” he said. “You know that. It’s going to be hit or miss. We’re going to go there and see what we have.” Crew chief Alan Gustafson is more upbeat about Dover. “I don’t know if that’s just because I like the track, or because I like to go there and race at it,” he said. “Typically, besides the win, we have a pretty good track record there.”

A Continually Improving Stewart-Haas Racing
S
urprisingly winless in the first 10 races of 2019, Stewart-Haas Racing continues to knock on the door of a breakthrough trip to Victory Lane. Is this the weekend? SHR driver Kevin Harvick is the defending winner of the spring Dover race, having led 201 of 400 laps and beat secondplace finishing teammate Clint Bowyer last May. “Ever since I’ve been at SHR, we’ve seemed to have some really good cars at Dover,” Bowyer said. “We’ve been so close to taking home that Miles The Monster trophy (given to Dover winners). I hope we are just as good this weekend. If we are, then we have as good of chance as anyone.” Bowyer, for his part, believes SHR is much improved from the start of the season. “It all comes back to the people working tirelessly to get our cars turned around, and I think the results the last month really proved it.”

The Dover Debut Of The 2019 Rules Package
T
his will be the first race at Dover with the 2019 aero rules package featuring more downforce and lower horsepower, among other changes from last season. “It’s going to be different,” seven-time Monster Energy Series champion and all-time Dover wins leader Jimmie Johnson said. “Going to be a lot of throttle and probably more like the 2015 rules package that we had there. I love that place (Dover), and from an ASA car to a Busch Grand National car and Cup car, I’ve always run well there. So, I’m excited to go back to it.” Driver Aric Almirola likewise predicts Dover won’t race the same that it has in recent visits. “You are going to be going faster across the middle of the corner and will have more load on the tires because of the downforce and the speed being higher,” Almirola said. “I think there is potential for that.”

A Continuation Of Kyle Busch’s Terrific Season
A
s the points leader, a three-time Dover winner and the only three-time race winner this season, Kyle Busch heads to “The Monster Mile” with a nice wind at his back. It’s also fair to say he’s the favorite to go to Victory Lane. But will it happen? “We just need to keep executing as a team like we’ve been doing pretty much every week,” said Busch, who owns six top-five finishes this season and is the first driver since 1990 to score top-10 finishes in each of the first 10 races of a season. “Dover has been a good place for me. We ran up front all day there last fall and have won some races there in the past but, in the spring races recently, we’ve had some bad luck get us. I know Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and all the guys are working hard to have a good car off the truck and get us off to a strong start this weekend. And, hopefully, we can finish off a strong run there this time and keep our early-season momentum going.”

Hands-down the top-performing driver still without a victory in 2019, Kevin Harvick looks to close the deal on Sunday afternoon at Dover, where he is the defending race winner and has excelled in recent seasons after years of trying but failing to seriously contend. ▶▶ Jimmie johnson. It’s no fluke that Jimmie Johnson leads all drivers with 11 victories at Dover. It’s no coincidence that Dover is also the site of his most recent win — almost two years ago. Expect the Hendrick Motorsports driver to go for broke this weekend in his efforts to end his lengthy drought. ▶▶ Joey Logano. Fresh off a visit to the White House where he and his team were honored for their 2018 championship run, Joey Logano looks to finally put one in the Dover win column after coming up short in 20 previous attempts to find Victory Lane at the notoriously treacherous Delaware oval. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Arguably NASCAR’s best driver on concrete, Kyle Busch lived up that reputation earlier this season with a win at Bristol Motor Speedway. The 2015 series champ will look to continue his concrete mastery on Sunday at Dover, a track where he’s already gone to Victory Lane three times. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson has endured a downright dismal season to date, failing to earn a single top-five finish in 10 races. But Larson is simply too talented and his team is too good to continue performing so poorly. Dover — historically one of Larson’s best tracks — could be just what the doctor ordered.

All the Right Moves Truex’s Fake Out on Pit Road is Key to Victory By Ben white

n June 24, 2018, Martin Truex Jr., driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota, scored his third win of the season and second-career win at Sonoma Raceway in the Toyota/Save Mart 350. Truex led 62 of the race’s 110 laps on the winding road course. Crew chief Cole Pearn pulled a fake move to pit on lap 73. Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer came down pit road while Truex Jr., then the leader of the race, stayed out. On lap 80, he did come in for fresh tires seven laps later. That allowed Truex to seal the deal through a different pit strategy that allowed him to work his way back through the field and build a commanding lead before the checkered flag waved.

Truex held his breath hoping the race would stay green to insure his race lead wasn’t be erased in the closing laps. “That’s all (crew chief) Cole (Pearn). That’s all him,” Truex Jr. said of the faked move to pit road. “I was just begging, hoping the caution wouldn’t come out.” “I called him off at the last second,” Pearn said with a smile. “As far as he knew, we were pitting. I’d like to say we’re smart enough to use codes, but we’re not. We’d probably mess it up.” Harvick, Bowyer, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five.

n the heels of a stellar 2018 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series campaign in which he scored one victory, qualified for the Championship 4 and earned the series’ Most Popular Driver award, 20-year-old Noah Gragson has taken the next step in his racing education as he is now a contender in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Gragson started his meteoric rise through the racing ranks at age 13 in a Bandolero. He then honed his skills in a Legend Car and eventually turned his attention to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, where he won four races in 2015 and 2016. Gragson then scored two wins and had 30 top-10 finishes during two years in the Truck Series with Kyle Busch Motorsports before moving to JR Motorsports where he currently drives the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

hawn Hopkins, interior mechanic for RCR Enterprises and driver Austin Dillon, attended his first NASCAR at the age of five with his parents at Martinsville Speedway in 1999. Stock car racing wasn’t new to him, as his father worked for a popular Virginia race driver of the 1970s. “My dad (Barry Hopkins) was on Lennie Pond’s crew back in the day so I grew up in racing,” Shawn said. “My Dad raced at South Boston and I helped with that. crew member profile Models and Modifieds.” Shawn worked at Stock Car Products building race cars for former Cup series team owner Emanuel Zervakis from 1993 through 2003. He later moved to Charlotte, N.C., and worked as a welder for Kyle Busch Motorsports and Precision Performance in the K&N Pro Cup Series. Then in 2017, he joined RCR Enterprises hanging bodies on RCR’s Xfinity Series cars before joining Dillon’s Cup Series team in this season. “I’m an interior mechanic but also do some fabrication work at the shop,” Shawn said. “I go through all the check lists and make sure everything is good inside the interiors of the car. If the fabricators need help on certain
things I try to do that for them.” Shawn greatly enjoys seeing race cars go from computer generated design to sitting on the shop floor ready for competition. Seeing them perform on the track is worth the extensive travel to 36 Cup series events each season. “It’s no fun building them and then sitting at home watching them race so I’d rather be at the track,” Shawn said. “It’s something you dream about as a little kid to make it to this level. Being at the track and being around everybody an having success with the cars is what’s important. Someday I would like to work as a car chief for a team so we’ll see how that goes.”

With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”

A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”

Brandon Jones improves on XFINITY Series By Joseph Wolkin It’s hard to miss Brandon Jones’ No. 19 Toyota Supra when he hits the track. The XFINITY Series regular for Joe Gibbs Racing is showing more speed than ever, consistently running in the top five. However, he needs just a bit of luck to have that speed show at the checkered flag. ▶▶ What’s the biggest difference for you this year? “This is crazy. Last year was my 100th start at Dover. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been in the series as long as I’ve had. I kind of lose track of time. I’m used to the tracks now. We had a crew chief change with Jeff Meendering coming over from Stewart-Haas. I was concerned because I wanted some consistency with a crew chief, but we hit it off right off the bat.” ▶▶ Where is the team now at intermediate tracks compared to 2018? “I think they’ve improved. We have the new Supra body, and that was new to us as well. We’ve had success with that. We’re figuring out the nooks and crannies of it. I feel like the entire program has improved.”

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
