Racing Through the Rain at Dover’s Monster Mile
O
n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at the rainy Monster Mile race at Dover this weekend. While much of the audience couldn’t watch live due to the weather rescheduling, there were quite a few significant stories to come out of the race. First up, it looks like our Big 3 of the season are starting to show themselves, only this time it’s teams, not drivers, who seem to be locking up the top spots. Joe Gibbs Racing and Penske are camping out in the Top 10 every week, and except for Hendrick Motorosports’ Chase Elliot, they also have all the wins. But team dominance wasn’t the only story out of Dover. Both the winner, Martin Truex, Jr., and the runner up, Alex Bowman, both started in the rear of

the field on Monday after failing inspection. Both the cars and the package appear to be able to deliver high quality racing, no matter where a driver starts in the field. The rain delay also caused a bit of a controversy with fans, with some arguing that the race should have delayed again until Tuesday, while others said they shouldn’t have delayed it to begin with. A refund policy for travelers and local fans also caused a stir on social media, but Eric has the background and context to explain what happened. But where does Dover’s Monster Mile rank on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? Would the rain wash away any hopes of good racing? How did the new 2019 package handle around the bumpy, rocky speedway? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Lessons Learned at Dover Dover Will Come Back Another Day
I
t was a long weekend at Dover International Speedway, where rain forced NASCAR to postpone the race until Monday. Once dry weather moved in, fans witnessed a race that featured minimal passing and left multiple drivers stewing about the 2019 aero rules. At least Martin Truex Jr. was happy — he won for the second time in three races. Here are five takeaways from The Monster Mile. By Jared Turner

Hendrick Motorsports Is Getting Its Mojo Back
A
week after winning its first race of 2019 and finishing 1-2 with drivers Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman at Talladega, Hendrick Motorsports continued its upward trajectory as Bowman finished second, Elliott came home fifth and teammate William Byron placed eighth at Dover. Jimmie Johnson, in a fourth Hendrick car, finished 14th after leading four laps. Monday’s race marked the first time all season that three Hendrick cars took the checkered flag in the top 10. “Talladega is a superspeedway, and it’s a lot of luck involved,” said Bowman, who led 16 laps at Dover. “But to come here to, in my opinion, the hardest racetrack we go to, and run like that from the back of all things, was pretty special. I’m just proud of everybody at Hendrick Motorsports for all the improvement we’ve made over the last year or so. We’re going to keep it going.”

Chase Elliott Has Turned It Up A Notch
O
ver the first nine races of 2019, Chase Elliott posted only one top-five finish — a second-place result at Martinsville. In the past two races, he’s finished first and fifth, respectively, while leading a total of 190 laps — more laps than he led in the first nine races combined. While Elliott didn’t win on Monday at Dover, he was impressive nonetheless as he led a race-high 145 laps after starting from the pole in his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Of the course, the greatest indicator of how much Elliott has progressed this season might be the fact that he was in no way pleased with how things unfolded at Dover. “We just fell off there at the end of that second stage,” he said. “That was the time of the race that we needed to be controlling it and not falling back. Just a bad time to have a bad half of a run.”

Kyle Larson Finally Has A Reason To Smile
B
y all accounts, the 2019 season has been brutal for Kyle Larson, who failed to record a single top-five finish and posted just a pair of top 10s over the first 10 races. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver broke out of his slump in a big way at Dover, however, finishing third after starting from the same position. “We ran inside the top five all race long,” Larson said. “It was good to finally have a clean race. I don’t think we’ve had a clean weekend all year long. And we’re 11 weeks into the season. So, it’s good to finally get a clean day, like I said, and thanks to our race team. Our pit crew did a good job today as well. It was a nice day.” And a day that Larson certainly hopes to build on over the next few weeks as he attempts to solidify a playoff berth.

The 2019 Rules Package Is Growing In Unpopularity
T
his was the first Dover race featuring the baseline aero elements of the 2019 rules package: a taller 8-inch by 61-inch rear spoiler, a larger front splitter with a 2-inch overhang, and a wider radiator pan that measures 37 inches wide in the front tapering to 31 inches at the rear. So did the thus far unpopular new aero rules — designed to add downforce to stabilize handling — earn a passing grade at The Monster Mile? “The package sucks,” 10th-place finisher Kyle Busch said. “No f-ing question about it. It’s terrible.” Others shared a similar sentiment, albeit in different words. “Here’s the hard thing about the package,” fourth-place finisher Kevin Harvick said. “I think that NASCAR’s tried to accomplish a lot of things with one particular package, but you look at how the cars drive behind each other and from a driver’s standpoint, it’s hard to race them — anywhere.”

Martin Truex Jr. And His Team Are Heating Up
W
inless in his first eight starts with Joe Gibbs Racing, Martin Truex Jr. has since won twice in three races — and both victories have come in rather convincing fashion. Clearly, whatever bugs or growing pains Truex and veteran crew chief Cole Pearn had to work through in their transition to JGR have been resolved. It’s fair to say that right now, no one is hotter than Truex and his No. 19 JGR team. “We’re starting to not only make our cars a little bit faster, but we are showing up better on Fridays, which means we’re a step ahead for the weekend,” Truex said after winning at Dover. “The pit crew is really doing a great job. That’s been the difference. We had a lot of trouble in the pits earlier in the year and didn’t get to show our speed. The guys are coming together, gelling and doing a fine job.”

Just Sayin’ Joey Logano mingled with the Dover fans during a rain delay on Sunday.
Others Should Follow Example of Logano, Johnson By Jared Turner
N
either Joey Logano nor Jimmie Johnson won Monday’s rescheduled race at Dover International Speedway, but both were big winners in their own right — before the green flag even waved. While most of their fellow drivers headed for cover and went out of sight during the extended rain periods, both Logano and Johnson took the opportunity to mingle with fans and sign autographs. In fact, Logano — the reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion — went all the way up into the stands to meet and greet those who so patiently braved the wet weather. Needless to say, NASCAR needs a lot more of this, instead of drivers immediately retreating to their plush motorhomes at the first siting of a raindrop. In fact, it wouldn’t hurt NASCAR to require that drivers have a designated time each and every weekend to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. This would be the least drivers could do for the fans who pour so such of their time,

effort and hard-earned money into the sport. Let’s hope that others begin to follow the examples set at Dover by Logano and Johnson — two truly remarkable champions who, in addition to being good people, truly care about the health, wellbeing and public perception of the sport, which has taken a beating in recent years. One of the main reasons why people have tuned out is lack of driver accessibility, especially when it comes to the “big” names. Maybe, just maybe, after what Logano and Johnson did at Dover, a few more of their fellow stars will grasp the value of accessibility. After all, this was one of the things that endeared so many fans to Richard Petty and the stars of yesteryear. NASCAR needs a revival of driver accessibility, and the actions of Logano and Johnson at Dover are certainly a good start.

Making Your Way Through iRacing Getting Your License and Going Pro By M atteo M archeschi

In the NASCAR career path built into iRacing, the top series is the NASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series, the one I write about every other week here in ROAR Digital Magazine. Over the last few years, the process to get to Peak has changed, but it appears to be staying the same for the time being.

The first step for any iRacer is to attain an A class license on ovals, which is the best license most iRacers can get. This involves keeping your safety rating, which is based on how many incidents you have in official races, down. As long as you avoid contact, your safety rating will go up. However, as your license gets better, incidents will weigh more heavily against you, so incidents might not

NASCAR eSports hurt you too much if you have a D license, but the same amount at an A license could bring you down a bit. Once you have the coveted A license, you’re able to enter races in the Road to Pro series, which runs Trucks every other Tuesday night, opposite the Peak series, from March to October. If you’re in the top 20 in points at the end of the season, you’ll make the NASCAR Pro Series, the next step in your journey. Keep in mind that the series is split based on iRating, so that the highest 40 iRatings are in the same race, and the next 40 are in a second race, and so on. iRating is determined based on how well you finish in races. The average
iRating of those you’re racing against is also taken into account. The higher splits are awarded more points than the lower ones, so higher-split drivers are more likely to make Pro. The Pro Series is run with the XFINITY Series cars from October to January. The top 20 Road to Pro drivers and the bottom 20 Peak drivers compete against each other, with the top 20 in points after the series’ ten weekly races, which run on Tuesday nights, advance to Peak and are considered for a Pro/ WC license. If you’re lucky and skilled enough to make it to Peak, you’re among the best sim racers in the world.

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 2 6
Dover Rearview: May 7, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich

in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
