REVISED 2020 SCHEDULE HAS DARLINGTON UP FIRST In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp reacts to not just the biggest news stories of the week, but quite possibly one of the biggest stories in NASCAR in many years. That’s right, it’s a return to racing. That’s right, not virtual. Real racing. Eric takes us through the incredible revised schedule that NASCAR dropped this week, featuring back to back weeks of Sunday races 0 0 2

and Wednesday races. Why these locations and this kind of timing? Eric can explain the context. That’s not all, though, as there are still fallout consequences to be determined about this new schedule. They will be without fans for now, first of all, but more questions remain about the future schedule. Watch the episode and find out what Eric has to say!

THINGS WE LEARNED AT KANSAS (PICKUP THROWDOWN STYLE) FERRUCCI CAPTURES SURPRISE WIN AT VIRTUAL KANSAS While the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series’ kickoff event at Texas was a tough tussle, Thursday night’s Rich Mar Florist 100 at the virtual Kansas Speedway had all the excitement, drama, and unpredictability as an on-track NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series race. Once the dust settled in the first half of the race, it came down to a trio of hardy, aggressive racers who waged in a truly memorable, nerve-wracking sprint to the finish with Santino Ferrucci taking the win. Now, here’s the five hot takeaways from virtual Kansas! BY ROB TIONGSON

ake no mistake, a top-10 finish for Natalie Decker’s hugely impressive and a great indicator of this young racer’s capabilities. Sure, she had some bad luck in the early going, but she kept herself in the fight and made sure she was not a part of the attrition that took out many perennial contenders in the Rich Mar Florist 100. With a limited on-track Truck Series schedule for this year, it’s pivotal for Decker to get as many laps possible at the tracks that this series competes in, even in a virtual fashion. A ninth-place finish is something that Decker can build on for these remaining IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series races. In addition, this will likely be a confidence booster for this budding superstar. As the series turns its attention to virtual Michigan, Decker can apply what she’s learned in these first two races to capture another solid top-10 result.

MARTINS AND MAJESKI CAN’T BUY GOOD LUCK

f Tommy Joe Martins and Ty Majeski could buy good luck for their IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series efforts, they would do so and perhaps paint their trucks green. Or then again, maybe they won’t, and they’ll avoid walking underneath ladders for the next week. Jokes aside, this is a maddingly frustrating stretch for Martins and Majeski as these hard chargers, who’ve ran well in the early going, find themselves caught up in other drivers’ disasters. Martins is probably that it’s now the month of May while Majeski must be wondering when he’ll stop being the pinball in a pinball machine. This NASCAR duo needs to simply do what Taylor Swift told her fans by shaking it off and realizing these next three races could simply erase the bad juju from Texas and Kansas. Perhaps the month of May will treat them like Prince so they can party like it’s 1999.

f Podium eSports’ Jacob Seelman didn’t persuade you about Stewart Friesen’s tenacious ways, then let this recap drive the point home. Friesen does not mess around and he about found himself in a position to win Round 2 of this special series. Instead, he’ll likely be remembered for his part in the last lap battle between himself and Josh Bilicki. In this case, let’s play devil’s advocate here in Friesen’s defense. When it comes down to the last lap, all bets are off and it’s all taking, no giving when the checkered flag is within grasp. This finish, which will likely be this series’ version of the 2018 Chicagoland Cup race, will likely be polarizing for fans. That said, Friesen likely saw his paint trading defensive driving as fair game after Bilicki side drafted off his truck prior to the stripe. Ultimately, everyone will likely remember who finished in second.

BILICKI’S VICTORY BID ENDS WITH HEARTBREAKING THIRD

I

f you weren’t screaming at your TV or laptop monitor during the final laps, it’s understandable if you’re a journalist or living under a rock. However, Josh Bilicki will likely go down in virtual racing history for having one of the most heartbreaking third place finishes. Despite being in the lead with older tires, Bilicki was doing a masterful job as the leader as he staved off some quality challenges from Santino Ferrucci. Making blocks that would make legendary Boston Bruins goaltender Gerry Cheevers proud, Bilicki did everything in his power to capture the Rich Mar 100 victory at Kansas. He likely rooted for Ferrucci and Stewart Friesen to keep battling side-by-side for the second spot. However, Friesen got past Ferrucci and it came down to two NASCAR talents. As Friesen nearly got by Bilicki, the two drivers traded paint before Bilicki hit the wall to take a devastating third.

FERRUCCI PULLS OFF DRAMATIC WIN AT KANSAS

I

t’s well documented how Santino Ferrucci’s journey to Formula 1 wasn’t totally smooth and controversy-free. However, he’s certainly made a name for himself, in a positive light, with a respectable 13th place points finish in last year’s NTT IndyCar Series championship standings. Dabbling in various iRacing events during the pandemic, Ferrucci’s massive talents have been noticed by the likes of Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon, and Adam Alexander during FS1’s Wednesday Night iRacing events. Invited as a tenacious competitor for the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series, Ferrucci has displayed incredible promise when he placed sixth at the virtual Texas Motor Speedway. On Thursday night, he powered his Toyota Tundra towards the front with a take no prisoners approach. Somehow, Ferrucci pulled his best impression of candlepin bowling icon Tom Olszta, a master at throwing incredible strikes, as he snookered by Friesen and Bilicki for the win. Can he repeat at virtual Michigan?

ONE LAP TO GO

ONE LAP TO GO BY ROB TIONGSON While Thursday night’s Rich Mar Florist 100 produced many memorable moments, the sprint to the finish line was like trying to climb to the top of the Aggro Crag from Nickelodeon’s GUTS. As Josh Bilicki and Stewart Friesen were preoccupied with which NASCAR driver would cross the stripe ahead of the pack, Santino Ferrucci zipped by, took the win, and laughed his way to Victory Lane. Earning $500 and making his NTT IndyCar Series comrades proud, it’s safe to say that the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series has caught Ferrucci fever. But you don’t have to take my word for it.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson holds up three fingers after tying Dale Earnhardt’s win total at Atlanta in 2016.

JIMMIE JOHNSON TIES DALE EARNHARDT FOR CAREER WINS BY JA RED TURNER

O

n February 28, 2016, Jimmie Johnson beat runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr. — his Hendrick Motorsports teammate — to win the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was another Earnhardt to which Johnson’s victory on that day will always be more closely linked, however. That Earnhardt was Junior’s father, the late seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt, whose career win total in NASCAR’s premier series Johnson matched that afternoon in south Georgia. The magic number was 76, which Johnson has since surpassed by seven victories. But on that special Sunday, it was all about tying Earnhardt, who in the eyes of many fans and observers of the sport will forever be considered the greatest driver in NASCAR history. The significance of winning for the 76th time certainly wasn’t lost on Johnson, whose career as a full-time driver in NASCAR’s premier series began in 2002 — the year after Earnhardt’s death. “I entered the sport just hoping I could win a race and keep a job for a few years, and to have 76 wins and tie Dale Earnhardt

Sr. is something I’m very, very proud of,” Johnson said after his milestone Atlanta victory. “I didn’t have a chance to race against him, unfortunately, but today there’s been a big void in my mind about not having that chance to race against him, and I was literally a handful of months away from having that opportunity. “So to tie him today, for myself personally, it gives me a little something — it’s a little bit of attachment to the great Dale Earnhardt and something I’m very proud of.” During his post-race victory lap, Johnson honored Earnhardt by holding his arm out the driver’s side window with a three-finger salute to the crowd. Among those who approved of Johnson’s tribute was Earnhardt Jr. “I told him on a couple occasions that when he tied daddy, he’d better say something cool, and he’d better tell them that it’s awesome to tie him,” Earnhardt Jr. said.

Brennan Poole BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with Brennan Poole, NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series racer. ▶  THE FIRST WORD THAT COMES TO MIND ABOUT YOUR NASCAR CAREER IS PERSEVERANCE. HOW REWARDING IS IT THAT YOU’RE IN THE CUP SERIES? That’s a good word! It’s been a lot of perseverance from a lot of people and family members. It’s a tremendous amount of hard work. It’s difficult to make it to the top level of any sport. To be able to be one of 40 guys that races on Sundays, it’s exceptionally rare. I’ve had many moments in my career where I wasn’t sure I’d race again. I worked multiple jobs at other teams, helping different drivers as a spotter or coach. I always believed in myself and my abilities and that the right opportunity would present itself to me when the time was right. ▶  DESPITE A TOUGH FINISH AT TEXAS, HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU ABOUT YOUR CHANCES WITH THE ICEBOX PICKUP THROWDOWN SERIES? I feel good about how much I progressed in iRacing over the past month. I felt like I was the truck to beat at the end of Texas. I tried running Briscoe down, and I felt like I had fresher tires than he did. When Christian Eckes was on my inside with eight to go, it was going to be difficult to get past him even though I was faster than him at that point in the race. Maybe I could’ve played it a bit better. I was trying to win the money and beat Briscoe. It was a lot of fun, and I think that Kansas will be a great race for me. I’ve been turning some practice laps at Kansas and playing a bit around there.

That is until Procter & Gamble offered him a job as a sales representative that ended a decade later as a unit sales manager. He was introduced to NASCAR when the company’s Tide laundry detergent brand was a sponsor of a car in the NASCAR Cup Series. He and Jodi were intrigued with the NASCAR program and already passionate about the sport, they settled in Charlotte to become fully integrated by starting a NASCAR team of their own. There would be plenty of difficult challenges ahead but the Geschickters have always been outgoing and completely dedicated to any venture they decide to explore. With very careful consideration, the couple decided to form a NASCAR Xfinity (then Busch Series) team in 1994 from very humble beginnings. Five employees built on-track race cars, pulled show cars, built shocks, worked on the pit crew and painted and decaled cars to help the company grow on a shoestring budget. two teams with drivers Ryan Preece and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wheeling their No. 37 and No. 47 Chevrolets. Also, they have amassed one victory with A.J. Allmendinger at Watkins Glen International in 2014 as well as 17 top-fives, 58 top-10s and three pole positions coming from Allmendinger and for the 2020 Daytona 500 with Stenhouse. “…This sport is so all-encompassing,” Tad Geschickter said. “You never have a day off, you work really hard 12 months a year. I don’t know how you could do it without working together. It’s just the way we’ve always done it. She’s been an equal partner in it. I’m a really big-picture person and I know that about myself — I’m not very good with the details. She’s very detail-oriented. So, as long as we understand what each other’s strengths are and we work toward those strengths, it’s been fun….” Fun and hard work have always been what JTG Daugherty Racing has been about.

DRIVER Q&A

THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME JOEY GASE HAS MADE HIS WAY TO THE CUP SERIES BY JOSEPH WOLK IN

For years, Joey Gase has split his time between the NASCAR Cup and XFINITY series. But he’s made the most of it and now, he’s competing full-time for Rick Ware Racing in the sport’s premier division. It’s an opportunity he doesn’t take for granted.

■■ Joey Gase, driver of the #53 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Cup Series

▶  HOW HAVE YOU BEEN HOLDING UP WHILE AT HOME? “It’s different for sure. The one really good advantage is being able to be home more with our babies who were just born in December [twins Jace and Carson]. It’s crazy to see how fast they’re growing, how their personalities are building and how much they’re learning. With two twin boys, it’s cool to see how they interact with each other and how different they are at the same time.” ▶  DID YOU EVER THINK YOU’D GET TO BE A FULL-TIME COMPETITOR IN THE SPORT’S TOP DIVISION? “It’s something I always dreamed about 0 3 0

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAY 1, 2020

and it was always something I saw myself doing. You never knew how it would happen or how it would be possible. I always kept on believing. Until now, I was racing in the XFINITY Series full-time and Cup part-time. It’s wild to see the difference when you’re there full-time and how much more exposure you get. You know you’re racing every Sunday. To be in it is a dream come true.” ▶  WHAT’S YOUR GOAL WITH THIS TEAM IN 2020? “If we can get five or 10 top-25 finishes, that would be a really good year for us. If we can get a bunch of top 30s and be consistent, finishing every race, that would be a great year.”

even-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has singlehandedly made 48 one of the most successful car numbers in series history. Johnson, a former off-road racer from El Cajon, California, has won 83 times in 655 starts since making his NASCAR Cup Series debut in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet on Oct. 7, 2001, at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 48 in the NASCAR Cup Series

have recorded 86 victories with 741 top-10 finishes in 1,565 starts. The number first appeared in NASCAR Cup Series competition on Sept. 11, 1949, when Lee Schmidt used No. 48 on his Buick in series race No 4 at the legendary Langhorne Speedway in Pennsylvania. The Milwaukee resident finished 18th. West Coast racer Bill Norton was the first driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race in car No. 48. That victory came on Nov. 11, 1951, when Norton led 119 of the 200 laps en route to winning at Carrell Speedway in his hometown of Gardena, California. Prior to Johnson, No. 48 was most closely associated with journeyman racer James Hylton, who made 583 of his 602 Cup Series starts in cars with that number. He was one of only three drivers to win in car No. 48, visiting Victory Lane at Richmond Raceway in 1970 and at Talladega Superspeedway in 1972.

JEFF HAMMOND

A

winner of the 1982 and 1985 NASCAR Cup Series championship with NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Hammond went to Victory Lane 43 times as a crew chief in NASCAR’s top series. Despite pairing with other drivers, including two-time champion Terry Labonte, Hammond celebrated all of his wins with Waltrip — with whom he later worked as a member of the NASCAR on FOX broadcast team. It’s important to note, however, that not all of Hammond’s wins with Waltrip came with the same team. After being paired together on car owner Junior Johnson’s team from 1982-1986, Hammond and Waltrip reunited in the middle of 1987 at Hendrick Motorsports — where they were together for the better part of four seasons and won the 1989 Daytona 500. In 1991, the two moved to Darrell Waltrip Motorsports when Waltrip formed his own team. After a season-and-a-half at DWM, Hammond went elsewhere but later reunited with Waltrip for one final season together in 1997.

KIRK SHELMERDINE

A

s the crew chief for Dale Earnhardt at Richard Childress Racing from 1984-1992, Kirk Shelmerdine guided Earnhardt to 44 of his 76 premier series wins and four of his record-tying seven premier series championships. Prior to pairing up with Earnhardt, Shelmerdine went to Victory Lane twice with Ricky Rudd in 1983. While Shelmerdine will always be remembered in large part for the four championships he won with Earnhardt over an incredible six-year span from 19861991, he might be remembered even more as the leader of the “flying aces,” or “junkyard dogs”— two nicknames that became synonymous with Earnhardt’s pit crew in the middle and late ‘80s and early ‘90s at a time when Earnhardt regularly benefited from lightning fast pit stops. A nominee for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Shelmerdine gave up his life as a crew chief at the end of 1992 to pursue a career as a driver, ultimately making 41 starts among NASCAR’s three national series.

DALE INMAN

L

ooking for the all-time wins leader among NASCAR Cup Series crew chiefs? Look no further than the legendary Dale Inman, whose 194 victories as a crew chief in NASCAR’s premier division far outnumber anyone else’s and likely always will. Inman — who was deservedly enshrined in the NASCAR Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2012 — is the only eight-time champion crew chief in NASCAR history, having called the shots for all seven of Richard Petty’s record-tying seven championships as well as for Terry Labonte’s championship season of 1984. Inman, who is Petty’s first cousin, guided his relative’s racing efforts over a nearly three-decade span at Petty Enterprises that included the illustrious 1967 campaign when he and Petty captured a NASCAR-record 27 wins — including 10 victories in a row — in a single season. All of Petty’s wins in that history-making season came in the same car, which he and Inman had built together a year earlier.

RAY EVERNHAM

A

s magical driver-crew chief combinations go, there’s arguably never been one more so than the dynamic duo of Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham, who won three championships and 49 races together in the 1990s. Had it not been for Terry Labonte barely standing in their way in 1996, Gordon and Evernham would have captured four championships together from 1995 to 1998. As it was, Evernham still led Gordon to two of the driver’s three Daytona 500 victories (1997 and 1999) and two of his five Brickyard 400 triumphs (1994 and 1998). During his magnificent run with Gordon, which stretched from the final race of 1992 through late 1999, Evernham proved to be a master of making Gordon’s car better throughout a race — particularly at the end. The legendary crew chief was equally skilled when on the clock, as it was under his guidance that Gordon’s pit crew in those years — dubbed the “Rainbow Warriors” — revolutionized the art of the pit stop.

CHAD KNAUS

T

he man widely considered the greatest crew chief in NASCAR history is in his second season with a driver — William Byron — who has yet to win his first NASCAR Cup Series race. Now pause and let that sink in. But regardless of how much success Chad Knaus ultimately has in his current role, his legacy is forever cemented. It came over 17 mostly glorious seasons with Jimmie Johnson, who — under Knaus’ watchful eye and shrewd guidance — amassed a recordtying seven NASCAR premier series championships and 83 wins from 2002-2018 (two of Johnson’s wins technically came with an interim crew chief). While Knaus and Johnson were notorious for their occasional sibling-like spats, their time together will always be more closely associated with their phenomenal achievements, which included victories in every one of NASCAR’s “crown jewel” events. Known for his workaholic-like tendencies and highly intense, business-like approach to his job, Knaus will always be considered perhaps the No. 1 secret to Johnson’s success.

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A

GEORGIA WOMAN DEVELOPED LOVE FOR SPORT THROUGH “NASCAR FOR DUMMIES” BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

Augusta, Ga., resident Cookie Serotta knew nothing about NASCAR in 2006 when she bought a cabin north of Asheville, N.C. She hired a crew to remodel the cabin, and the men bantered endlessly about NASCAR. Serotta decided to educate herself on the sport, starting with reading the book, “NASCAR for Dummies.” What’s come of her research is a passion for the sport and a membership in the Original NASCAR Members Club. ▶ WHAT SPARKED YOUR LOVE FOR NASCAR? “I went to my first race at Bristol in 2008 and fell in love with it. I found it so fascinating. I went to a race with someone who really understood it. We absolutely loved it. The next year, we got pit passes, which made it that much better. When you see what makes the sport, you appreciate it even more.” ▶ WHAT IMPRESSED YOU SO MUCH? “The fans amazed me. Fans of other sports get in fights, but in NASCAR, everyone loves their driver. If their driver doesn’t win, that’s alright, we’ll get you next time. It’s a different atmosphere. Fans love the sport more than anything else. And when you get in the pits or inside the shops, you see how much the people in NASCAR love the fans.” ▶ WHAT BENEFITS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED FROM YOUR AFFILIATION WITH THE ORIGINAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB? “We been on the infield in different spots. We get hot passes, and all of the drivers talk to you. They’ll take pictures, talk to you, and sign autographs. What other sport is the main goal for the athletes charity work?” ▶ WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE CLUB? “We were going to Charlotte for one of the races, and we went 0 4 8

for a fan weekend. We joined the club because we could get admission to one of those on-track events. From there, I became excited about everything. I could see tracks, shops, and everyone was so proud of their work. It’s fun because it’s a smaller, more intimate group. We got to know a lot of NASCAR fans, and we’ve developed friendships with them over the years. That’s what NASCAR is all about.” JOIN THE OFFICIAL

CREW MEMBER PROFILE

FROM AN EAGLE’S VIEW LEGEMAN HAS ENJOYED VAST EXPERIENCES IN NASCAR BY BEN WHITE Tommy Legeman, team spotter as well as partnership marketing manager for StarCom Racing and driver Quinn Hough, saw his first NASCAR race as a child at the former Riverside International Raceway road course in Riverside, Calif. “We would go out there every year and would follow Indy Cars and NASCAR,” Legeman said. “Ascot Park (Speedway) was our home track (near Gardena, Calif.). They would always have that race a month before the Daytona 500, and I’d watch all the regulars race out there. I saw my first NASCAR race at 5 years old.” Legeman’s Dad grew up in Indianapolis, Ind., and for years, the family would go to Indianapolis 500s while on vacation. Legeman’s brother raced go-karts and later NASCAR Modifieds on the West Coast in the mid-1970s. Legeman built his engines and served as crew chief before leaving to obtain a journalism and advertising degree from San Diego State University in the early 1980s. Legeman moved to the northeast to work in advertising and found himself involved in racing again with various drivers, including three-time Busch North champion Jamie Aube in 1993 and 1994. Doing so presented the opportunity to spot for what has become a long list of top Cup Series drivers over the past two decades. Legeman offered the perfect explanation for what a spotter does during each of the NASCAR events on the schedule. “A spotter is one of three people fans will hear on the radio,” Legeman said. “That’s the driver, crew chief and the spotter throughout the race.”

ollowing thorough collaboration with public health officials, medical experts and state and federal officials, NASCAR has implemented a comprehensive health and safety plan. In accordance with CDC, OSHA and state and local government recommendations, nearly every aspect of how the event is conducted will be significantly modified, including: ▶▶ One-day shows; ▶▶ Mandated use of personal protective equipment throughout the event; ▶▶ Health screenings for all individuals prior to entering the facility, while inside the facility and exiting the facility; ▶▶ Social distancing protocols throughout the event; ▶▶ Strict limits on the number of individuals who are granted access into each facility ▶▶ As NASCAR works towards the execution of these events, the sanctioning body will continue to work with state and local authorities based on trends and local restrictions. ▶▶ In-race competition procedures remain largely unchanged, though NASCAR will eliminate practice for all events during this opening return slate, as well as qualifying for all events except the Coca-Cola 600.
