DOVER’S BROADCAST NEEDED A BIT MORE BOWYER In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at what went down in the eNASCAR Pro Invitational series this week, this time with the drivers at the virtual Monster Mile at Dover International Speedway. With the recent announcement of a return to real racing in the next few weeks, we’re closing in on the last few broadcasts of the interim iRacing series, and Eric looks at not only this weekend’s 0 0 2

race, but compares it to the past weeks of virtual racing we’ve seen. What worked about the broadcast and what didn’t? Eric takes us through it. And what about this week’s broadcast on FOX missing its usual dose of Clint Bowyer hijinks? And with William Byron’s runaway iRacing success, will it translate back onto the track when racing returns? Eric has his take in this week’s episode!

THINGS WE LEARNED (IRACING STYLE) AT DOVER WILLIAM BYRON SCORES DOMINANT VIRTUAL DOVER WIN While the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series was designated as a fun diversion for fans, sponsors, and essentially anyone involved in the NASCAR Cup Series, it proved to be “The William Byron Show” when all was said and done. From the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway to the digital concrete beast known as Dover International Speedway, Byron, as the late Stuart Scott often said, was as cool as the other side of the pillow. Alongside Byron’s textbook win, here’s five takeaways from Sunday’s Finish Line 150 that will make you say, “Booyah!” BY ROB TIONGSON

MICHAEL MCDOWELL TAKES FANTASTIC FIFTH AT DOVER
ne of the coolest aspects with the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series is the possibility of fun, surprising front finishers. Certainly, Michael McDowell is a solid, capable Cup Series driver on the track. However, seeing him score a top-five in Sunday’s Finish Line 150 was truly impressive for the Front Row Motorsports racer. Starting 20th, McDowell took to the virtual “Monster Mile” in his familiar No. 34 K-Love Ford Mustang colors and bided his time to the front. Dodging various multi-car wrecks that made him look like Neo magically escaping from the clutches of the nefarious Agent Smith from The Matrix trilogy, the 35-year-old mildmannered Arizonan put his on-track experience to the test in this grueling 150-lapper. As the highest finishing Blue Oval specialist on Sunday afternoon, it was a great sight to see for one of the series’ hardiest racers whose standard specialty is superspeedway and road course racing.

CASSILL AND KLIGERMAN COLLECTED IN DOVER DISASTERS
P
rior to Sunday’s Finish Line 150 at Dover, Landon Cassill and Parker Kligerman were consistent frontrunners in the Pro Invitational Series. On a weekly basis, their unmistakable rides were often challenging William Byron and Timmy Hill for the lead or, at least, running inside the top-five. However, Lady Luck decided to skedaddle from Cassill and Kligerman at the digital Dover raceway. In this case, Kligerman’s promising day essentially went downhill when he tangled with Timmy Hill in Turn 2 on Lap 23. It seemed like Kligerman’s No. 77 Valvoline Toyota Camry was converted into a car for the Crash Test Dummies from the Ad Council, as the amiable racer was relegated to a 34th place finish. As for Cassill, while he had the makings to challenge for the win, he and Byron tangled in Turn 1 with 10 to go. Cassill wound up in the wall, ultimately finishing in 21st.

T
he man that Ken Squier dubbed as “That Jones Boy” lived up to his top-five finishing ways once again. This time, Erik Jones took his on-track talents to his digital No. 20 DeWalt Toyota Camry from the 31st starting spot to place a “where did he come from” fourth when the checkered flag waved at Dover. It doesn’t matter if it’s on-track or virtual racing. Jones’ feat to gain 27 spots on a tough one-mile speedway is as impressive as some other guy who played for a Michigan university’s football program in Ann Arbor and led the Wolverines to some impressive comebacks. Actually, in this case, Jones’ comeback was as incredible as that of actor Don Johnson’s during the 2010’s. Sure, that comparison is quite a stretch and Jones will not likely record a pair of music albums. However, like Johnson, it’s safe to say that Jones is totally resilient.

VIRTUAL NORTH WILKESBORO CONCLUDES PRO INVITATIONAL SERIES
H
ere’s where iRacing and eNASCAR can create incredible magic for everyone. Yes, it’d be wonderful if the real-life North Wilkesboro Speedway and Rockingham Speedway could return and get modernized for today’s on-track action. However, it seems like the hard work, mainly led by Dale Earnhardt Jr and a few of his broadcast and racing colleagues last winter, will finally pay off with a special Saturday afternoon special on Mother’s Day weekend. While the excitement for on-track NASCAR increases and the anticipation reaches the highs of Daytona Speedweeks, a virtual return to North Wilkesboro is a great sendoff for the Pro Invitational Series. As of press time, Jeff Gordon considered the possibility of joining this special race. Considering that Gordon was the track’s last on-track winner back in September 30, 1996, how cool would it be to see this legend duplicate some history at the beloved and much missed short track?

WILLIAM BYRON IS ABSOLUTELY RELENTLESS IN ENASCAR
P
erhaps William Byron has been finally granted the powers of the No. 24 car, at least in iRacing. If he seemed to evoke memories of Jeff Gordon during his heydays in NASCAR Cup Series action during the 1990s, particularly at Dover, you can’t be faulted. Byron can’t stop, won’t stop winning and at this rate, his competitors are happy that they’ll return to on-track action on May 17th. Still, Byron has shown confidence and potential in real-life NASCAR since pairing with crew chief Chad Knaus. Byron, much like Michael Jordan, has a Phil Jackson-like leader who likely can’t wait to reunite with his unstoppable racer. Yes, Byron has iRacing experience and that certainly factored with his success in the Pro Invitational Series. However, Byron, who made the Cup Playoffs last year, has superstar potential in 2020. When we resume, will Byron succeed as Jordan did in the 1990-’91 NBA season?

JUST SAYIN’ ▶
NASCAR NAILED IT ON RETURN TO RACING
While executives from other sports continue to ruminate on how and when their respective leagues might return to competition in the face of lingering COVID-19 concerns, NASCAR took a major step toward restoring order in the world by revealing plans to get cars back on track later this month at Darlington Raceway. Over an 11-day stretch beginning May 17, NASCAR will hold seven national series events — including four NASCAR Cup Series races. While some will criticize NASCAR’s bold and perhaps somewhat risky decision, a certain level of normalcy is desperately needed in this country. Hats off to NASCAR for leading the charge. JA RED TURNER ▶ SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT SUPERSPEEDWAYS WERE NECESSARY NASCAR hit a home run with last week’s announcement that the cars raced at Daytona and Talladega will feature mandatory safety enhancements in the wake of Ryan Newman’s harrowing crash in February’s Daytona 500. Among the changes are a reduction in the size of the throttle body and the elimination of aero ducts. Extra roll bar padding will be mandatory at all tracks, beginning June 1. While the worst of Newman’s injuries was a brain bruise, everyone knows his outcome could have been devastating. Kudos to NASCAR for recognizing this and making the necessary adjustments.
■■ NASCAR picked a great venue in Darlington Raceway for the return to racing.
0 1 6
▶ DITCH THE WAIVER AND AMEND THE RULE BOOK The least surprising news development of the past week was that NASCAR has granted Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth a waiver to be eligible for this year’s playoffs despite both drivers missing multiple races in 2020. While this is good for the sport, it begs the question: When has NASCAR ever NOT granted a waiver to a driver who requested it? It’s time for NASCAR to formally drop the rule that says a driver must participate in all regular season races to be playoffeligible, because — in all reality — it’s never really been enforced.

IN THE HOTSEAT
IN THE HOT SEAT Jarl Teien
BY ROB TIONGSON
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with Jarl Teien, driver of the No. 66 G2 Esports Chevrolet Camaro. ▶ IN YOUR THIRD YEAR OF ENASCAR COCA-COLA IRACING SERIES, YOU’VE MADE NOISE WITH A 10TH AT CALIFORNIA AND SIXTH AT RICHMOND. WHAT’S YOUR IMPRESSION OF YOUR SEASON WITH THE G2 ESPORTS TEAM AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THESE NEXT SEVERAL REGULAR SEASON RACES? This season so far has been about potential. Apart from Homestead, I have had the potential for a top-five finish each race, but I’ve not really been in the right place at the right time. It’s still encouraging that I do have the pace for the most part. Richmond, so far this year, has definitely been a highlight, using strategy to my advantage and almost making it work for a win, but those old tires could only manage sixth. I’m still very happy with it, nonetheless. Next few races, I probably will tone down my aggressive strategies and rather go for full performance and try to stay at the front. I believe I can manage some good results. ▶ WITH THESE RACES TAKING PLACE EARLY IN THE MORNING FOR YOU, HOW DO YOU GET PREPARED TO HAVE THE ENERGY AND FOCUS TO RACE WELL BEFORE DAWN IN NORWAY? It all depends on work, but I could work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or noon to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays with the race starting on Wednesday at 3 a.m. my time. Sometimes, I take a nap before the race if I have time. Sometimes, I just do more laps and practice more. I get about three hours of sleep after the race before having to leave for work. It’s a handicap, for sure, but I make it work because I like what I do.

BEST ROOKIE SEASONS IN CUP SERIES HISTORY We’re all excited about this year’s rookie class, which is laden with talented newcomers to the Cup Series like Christopher Bell, Cole Custer, John Hunter Nemechek and Tyler Reddick. While the consensus is that this year’s rookie class is deep and talented, it’s not regarded as a class that is blessed with a future Hall-of-Famer. Is it too early to make that judgment? Of course. But some rookies in past years have wasted no time in making statements as to their intentions in the premier series. We’ve seen rookies earns poles at Daytona, pick up early-season wins, and go on to take multiple checkered flags in Year 1. Here’s a list of the top 10 seasons in NASCAR Cup Series history.

@CGRTeams places @ MattKenseth in the No. 42 for the rest of 2020, in a shocker of a move.
For our readers who predicted that Matt Kenseth would come out of retirement to drive the No. 42 Credit One Chevrolet Camaro, may you hopefully have a wonderful new mansion and millions of dollars to enjoy. In a move that was as unexpected as the Parks and Recreation crew reuniting for a special episode last week, it’s safe to say that Ross Chastain seemed like the successor of Chip Ganassi’s No. 42 ride. Instead, Kenseth simply says, “Hold my beer.”

Carl Edwards declined CGR offer to drive the #42
Equally shocking, Jenna Fryer of the Associated Press tweeted how Carl Edwards declined Chip Ganassi’s offer to drive the No. 42 Chevrolet Camaro. Hilarious, Reddit users joked how Ganassi would look further into their replacement list with former Roush-Fenway Racing drivers. Seriously though, if Edwards returned to Cup, it would’ve evened the unbalance that the sports world encountered since his shocking retirement prior to the 2017 season. For now, the last moment for Edwards is the Homestead heartbreak of 2016. 0 4 4

mentobe takes honorable mention for the Reddit Reaction segment for the most incredible home décor and it’s not the die-casts that’s getting the love. How about the fact that mentobe has the nose from Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro from this year’s Las Vegas spring race? Nose way.

What’s the most emotional race you’ve watched? For me it was DJs last win as he was my fav growing up but this is the only race I remember actually seeing him win. Wish it would’ve ended green but I feel like no one was too upset he got the W.
jrdkrsh inquired Reddit users to consider the most emotional race that they’ve watched. Dale Jarrett’s 2005 UAW-Ford 500 win at Talladega brought folks back to memory lane. Considering that it was Jarrett’s last win before his retirement in 2008, it was quite the send off for the second-generation Cup racer. 0 4 6

TWEETSTORM COMPILED BY ROB TIONGSON
▶ Landon Cassill hopefully had some Blue-Emu to soothe the pains of his devastating Dover defeat. Typically stoic and cool as can be for a Cup driver, Cassill saw his bid for the Finish Line 150 win disappear when he and William Byron tangled with 10 laps remaining in the grueling race. While Cassill’s tweet seemed like a NASCAR Heat 4 “angry tweet,” might he dump him in a future iRacing event? Suddenly, Saturday’s race at North Wilkesboro got more interesting. 0 4 8

▶ We’ve all been there before. Who hasn’t felt a wee bit embarrassed when watching themselves in a video clip or hearing their voice from a recording? Regardless, Michael McDowell had that moment on Sunday but that’s another aspect that makes iRacing truly fun and unique. With the helmets off and the “in-car cameras” facing the drivers racing from home, we all know that Landon Cassill makes interesting expressions and now Double M is astonished by his reactions during a race.

ollowing thorough collaboration with public health officials, medical experts and state and federal officials, NASCAR has implemented a comprehensive health and safety plan. In accordance with CDC, OSHA and state and local government recommendations, nearly every aspect of how the event is conducted will be significantly modified, including: ▶▶ One-day shows; ▶▶ Mandated use of personal protective equipment throughout the event; ▶▶ Health screenings for all individuals prior to entering the facility, while inside the facility and exiting the facility; ▶▶ Social distancing protocols throughout the event; ▶▶ Strict limits on the number of individuals who are granted access into each facility ▶▶ As NASCAR works towards the execution of these events, the sanctioning body will continue to work with state and local authorities based on trends and local restrictions. ▶▶ In-race competition procedures remain largely unchanged, though NASCAR will eliminate practice for all events during this opening return slate, as well as qualifying for all events except the Coca-Cola 600.
