When Does Criticism Become Detrimental to the Sport? It’s a jam packed episode of Out of the Groove this week. Host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all of the big controversies blowing up on social media, including the now notorious quote from Kyle Busch. But first, a couple of outstanding issues remained from Dover. Denny Hamlin suffered from a medical issue following Monday’s race. While it was originally thought to be simple exhaustion from the G-forces exerted by the Monster Mile, later investigation raised the possibility of chemical vapors contaminating the cockpit. The leakage was likely caused by damage from an earlier tire problem. NASCAR has promised to investigate, as is their policy on any safety issue, and Eric brings us the full context. We also had a Cup driver, No. 43’s Bubba Wallace,

make the topic of conversation around traditional sports media this week. Why is he so marketable, and yet suffering from lack of funding and sponsorships? Eric dives deeper than the mainstream media conversation, and provides the context on Bubba’s career, his hope for sponsorships, and his performance as a driver. And finally, we get to all of the nasty back and forth this week over the racing package from Dover. Kyle Busch made the loudest remarks, but other drivers have been similarly critical of the performance. Eric as always explains the entirety of the issue, but then offers a stern warning to NASCAR’s harshest critics on social media. What effect is this criticism having on the state of the fandom, and the sport’s image as a whole? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

oe Gibbs Racing has dominated the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, with Team Penske not too far beyond. Hendrick Motorsports, meanwhile, is surging. Will a driver from one of these organizations, or perhaps someone totally unexpected, have the upper hand on Saturday night at Kansas Speedway? A Breakthrough For Stewart-Haas Racing

I

t’s pretty hard to believe that 11 races into the 2019 Monster Energy Series season, StewartHaas Racing has yet to find its way to Victory Lane. After all, this is the same Tony Stewart coowned organization that won a total 12 races last season thanks to the collective efforts of its four drivers. One of those drivers, 2014 series champion Kevin Harvick, scored a career-high eight victories last season and is the defending winner of Saturday night’s race at Kansas — a track where he’s been to Victory Lane on three separate occasions, all of them since 2013. None of Stewart-Haas Racing’s other three drivers — Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola and first-year SHR driver Daniel Suarez — have ever won at Kansas, but Bowyer, especially, would love it if this was his weekend. The native of Emporia, Kansas very much considers Kansas Speedway his home back but is winless in 21 starts here.

A Continuation of Chase Elliott’s Hot Streak

A

s if winning at Talladega on April 28 wasn’t enough to give Chase Elliott a proverbial shot in the arm heading into the next few races, the next two tracks on the schedule — Dover and Kansas — are tracks where he went to Victory Lane last fall. While Elliott was unable to make it backto-back wins at Dover, he qualified on the pole and led a race-high 145 laps on the way to a fifthplace finish in Monday’s race. He and his team harbor even higher hopes for this weekend. “Kansas, to be honest with you, as much as we struggled on the mile-and-a-half tracks last year, I didn’t feel like there was any way we were going to win a mile-and-a-half track,” crew chief Alan Gustafson said. “We worked really hard at this mile-and-a-half program and had a test at Kansas that went fantastic. We were really solid all week.”

A Justifiably Confident Martin Truex Jr.

I

t took Martin Truex Jr. nine races to find his way to Victory Lane with Joe Gibbs Racing. It took him just two more races to find his way back. The 2017 series champ made it two victories in three outings with a convincing run this past Monday at Dover — the place where back in 2007 he captured his first career NASCAR premier series win, which, coincidentally, also came on a Monday. Truex stands a good chance of another super outing this weekend at Kansas Speedway, a track where he swept both races in 2017. “We’ve had some really strong race cars at a lot of racetracks,” Truex said of his recent success. “The last couple weeks I just feel it’s execution. We’re doing all the little things right. The pit crew is doing an amazing job getting us track position, keeping it when we have it. Our cars are fast.”

A Possible First-Time 2019 Winner

O

f the drivers who finished in the top 10 one year ago at Kansas Speedway, six of them are winless in 2019. Those drivers are 2018 Kansas winner Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson (fourthplace), Paul Menard (sixth), Erik Jones (seventh), Kurt Busch (eighth) and Aric Almirola (ninth). Will Saturday night be the time for one of them to finally break into the win column? Another driver who could factor into the mix this weekend is Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman, who comes to Kansas riding the momentum of back-to-back second-place finishes. “We had a miserable start to the season, and we did a really good job of resetting over the (Easter) off-weekend,” Bowman said. “We’ve come out strong since then.” Larson, meanwhile, heads to Kansas after posting a seasonbest third-place finish at Dover. Busch, the 2004 series champion, has looked really good at times in this his first season with Chip Ganassi Racing.

More Good Times For Joe Gibbs Racing

W

ithout question, 2019 has been the year of Joe Gibbs Racing — winners of seven of the season’s first 11 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races. JGR drivers Kyle Busch (three wins), Denny Hamlin (two) and Martin Truex Jr. (two) have collectively inflicted a beating on the rest of the competition, while JGR’s fourth driver, Erik Jones, has been solid but far from spectacular. One track where JGR could slip a bit, however, is Kansas Speedway, given the organization’s recent history. JGR drivers are winless in the past five races here, with the company’s most recent victory coming courtesy of Busch in the spring of 2016. Perhaps it will help JGR at Kansas that Truex is now part of the team’s driver roster. As part of Furniture Row Racing, Truex swept the two Kansas races in 2017. Hamlin, like Busch, owns just one Kansas victory — which came in the spring of 2012.

drivers to watch at Kansas

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle busch. Kyle Busch has enjoyed minimal success at Kansas, relative to the success he’s found at most other tracks. That doesn’t mean the Joe Gibbs Racing driver can be written off this weekend, however. Even if Busch doesn’t win, he has a good chance to finish in the top 10 for the 12th time in as many starts this year. ▶▶ Alex Bowman. After a slow start to 2019, Alex Bowman has seemingly found a new gear the past couple of weekends. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has finished second on two very different types of racetracks, Talladega and Dover, which makes him an underdog contender to win this weekend at Kansas. ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Kevin Harvick doesn’t own a victory this season, but that could be about to change. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver is the defending race winner of the springtime Kansas event and owns a total of three victories at the 1.5-mile venue. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson needed 11 races to finally collect his first top-five finish of the season, doing so in Monday’s race at Dover. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver hopes to build on that success this weekend at Kansas, which is historically one of his better tracks. ▶▶ Martin truex Jr. A winner of two of the past three races, Martin Truex Jr. has to be excited to be heading to Kansas Speedway — a track where he swept the races during his championship season of 2017. Of course, those wins came during his time with Furniture Row Racing, not with his current team at Joe Gibbs Racing

O

n June 27, 2004, Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, scored a dominating victory in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 on the road course at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. After starting from the pole position and leading 92 of 110laps and logged his fourth victory on the 1.99-mile, 10-turn road course. The native of nearby Vallejo, Calif. logged five NASCAR Cup series victories during his 25-year career. “We’ve had some bad finishes lately, and we wanted this one real bad,” Gordon said after emerging his car soaked in sweat on

a very hot California afternoon. “I drove out and got as big a lead as I could and gave a lot of it up there at the end. It was real tough,” After being doused in ice on his final pit stop on lap 81, Gordon was able to hold off Jamie McMurray, driver of the Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge, by 1.032-seconds with career road-racer Scott Pruitt, in another Ganassi Dodge, in third. McMurray had a strong run at the track but couldn’t get by Gordon for the win. From the way Gordon was running, it proved to be a long day. “He was just so strong out there,” said the 2003 Cup series Rookie of the Year. “I think that Jeff was kind of cruising there at the end.”

Thirteen years earlier in 2000, Howard joined his family and rode from Amarillo, Texas, to Fort Worth to attend a Cup series race at Texas Motor Speedway. “I was 10 years old at the time,” Howard said. “My Mom and Dad are longtime race fans and my Dad watched a lot of NASCAR races. It was awesome to hear the noise and see all the cool stuff going on.” In 2009, Howard decided to pursue a dream in racing, heeding his father’s friendly advice. He was OK with leaving the dry Texas heat and 20,000-acre farmlands behind. “My old man told me to do something other than farming,” Howard said. “So I moved to North Carolina in 2009 and started making friends. I went to OTW (Over the Wall) with D.J. Cobb and then worked with the ARCA teams of Coulter Motorsports and also (ARCA champion) Frank Kimmel and his team. I met (pit crew coach) Kevin Sharpie when

he came to one of my practice sessions. He picked me up and we went to Michael Waltrip Racing and then came to Stewart Haas Racing when he came here in 2013.” Howard fuels Almirola’s No. 10 Chevrolets on race weekends and maintains the fuel cans he carries. He also assists wherever his team needs him at the shop and in the garage areas. “During the week when all the Cup series haulers get back, I take all of the fuel can probes (connectors) off the cans and refurbished them and out new ones on,” Howard said. “I practice and work out make sure all of the fuel is out of the gas cans.”

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Tommy Joe Martins has confidence with BJ McLeod By Joseph Wolkin

T

ommy Joe Martins isn’t the conventional racecar driver. He doesn’t bring millions of dollars in sponsorship to BJ McLeod Motorsports. But what he does bring is confidence, the ability to keep a car clean and most of all, teach his teammates.

▶▶ What’s the year been like for you in the No. 99 car? “We knew with some of the bigger teams shutting down, it opened a door for us. It’s an opportunity to make a run for the next little tier, which you’ve seen happen. We struggled getting going. We had new cars and were trying to figure it out. It’s still a work-in-progress.” ▶▶ What were some of the struggles that you’ve overcome? “BJ McLeod Motorsports expanded to three teams, and that’s a big step. There was a lot going on in a short period of time. It’s just been taking time for everyone to gel and figure the cars out. Thankfully, we haven’t had a lot of bad luck this year. We’ve been focusing on making the cars better, rather than fixing them. My car that I’m running, I’ve run the same car at every track we’ve gone to.”

NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 5 0

Kansas PReview: May 9, 2019

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
