Talking eNASCAR and Esports with Joey Stone In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp brings us his interview with professional esports driver Joey Stone, better known as Sloppy Joe to the NASCAR online community. Joey was officially drafted as the Playstation driver for Richard Childress in this year’s eNASCAR Heat Pro League. Teams from the Race Team Alliance, including Hendrick, Chip Ganassi, and the Wood Brothers, are fielding drivers in the official esports program for 704 Games’ NASCAR Heat 3. Joey is featured in this month’s issue of

NASCAR Pole Position, and in this episode, Eric talks to Joey about the growing esports scene in NASCAR. What is it like to make the jump from a Twitch streamer all the way to working for a real race team like Richard Childress Racing? They even talk about the future of the sport, and the effect it will have on younger players coming up. After all, didn’t we all grow up playing the NASCAR video games at this point? So what does the future hold for eNASCAR and NASCAR competitive gaming as a whole? What about any hints about NASCAR Heat 4? You’ll have to watch the video and find out!

Haley’s fluky win at Daytona fresh on the mind of rivals

A

fter a wild, wet weekend of racing at Daytona, it’s back to the grind in a hurry for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series as drivers take to Kentucky Speedway — a popular, sometimes treacherous mile-and-a-half track that first hosted NASCAR’s premier division in 2011. Here are five things to watch for in Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart. By Jared Turner

A Good Test of The 2019 Rules Package

W

hile the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ 2019 rules package remains a sore spot for some of the series’ more outspoken competitors, Saturday night’s race at Kentucky could be a good test of how much progress has been made with the package, which has seemed to show signs of improvement in the more recent trips to mile-and-a-half tracks. Kentucky is the type of venue where this year’s high-downforce, reduced-horsepower aero rules have the potential to generate a lot of good, side-by-side racing like what was witnessed at Kansas Speedway on Mother’s Day weekend and perhaps to a slightly lesser extent a couple of weekends ago at Chicagoland Speedway. While no one is questioning whether the rules package remains a work-in-progress, there’s certainly more optimism about it now than there was just a few weeks ago when even the drivers who were enjoying success with it were questioning whether it was good for business.

The Steady Progression Of Jimmie Johnson

W

hat’s more unfathomable: The fact that Jimmie Johnson has gone more than two whole years without a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win or the fact that Johnson — the seven-time series champion and one of the greatest drivers of all-time — is winless in eight starts at Kentucky Speedway? While both are hard to believe for a competitor of the Hendrick Motorsports driver’s caliber, there’s some good news surrounding Johnson as he prepares for Kentucky. The “news” is that for the first time in more than two years, he’s showing up at a track after just posting back-to-back top-five finishes. Johnson, who was third last weekend at Daytona and fourth the previous weekend at Chicagoland, is really starting to look like a driver who’s turned a corner with his team. If he can put his more than two-year drought to bed this weekend, there won’t be any doubting how much he and his team have improved from the start of the year.

The Return Of ‘Bowman The Showman’

A

lready knocking on the door of his maiden victory, Alex Bowman kicked the proverbial door completely down two weekends ago at Chicagoland Speedway with a convincing drive to his first career triumph in NASCAR’s premier series. Bowman’s 2019 stats suggest his breakthrough was no fluke, however, as he has three second-place finishes to go along with his lone win. Perhaps just as important to his prospects for this weekend at 1.5-mile Kentucky is the fact that Bowman has finished first, seventh and second, respectively, in the last three races held on mile-and-a-half tracks. Bowman crashed out last season at Kentucky while making his first start at the track as driver of No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Don’t be surprised if the driver playfully dubbed “Bowman The Showman” atones for last year’s Kentucky disappointment in a big way come Saturday night, when he’ll look to keep his string of strong outings at the mile-and-ahalves firmly intact.

The Unexpected Part II

N

o matter what happens on the track this weekend at Kentucky, it’s unlikely that there will be a race winner as surprising as the one who was declared the victor last weekend at Daytona. Simply in the right place at the right time, little known Justin Haley took the win at The World Center of Racing by being P1 on the leaderboard when NASCAR called the race official 33 laps early due to persistent rain and storms. Prior to prevailing at Daytona by virtue of staying on track when everyone else pitted just before the bad weather settled in, Haley had made only two premier series starts, which produced finishes of 32nd and 34th, respectively. As unlikely and farfetched as it would be for a driver of Haley’s caliber to win this weekend or on any other occasion before season’s end, don’t rule out another surprise winner or two in 2019. Daytona proved that anything’s possible.

A Three-Headed Monster

I

f three drivers combining to win seven of the eight Monster Energy Series races held at Kentucky Speedway says anything, perhaps it’s that Kentucky is one of those rare tracks — sort of like Martinsville — where it seems like drivers who get a good handle on it somehow manage to maintain a leg up for an extended period of time. Or maybe the history of repeat winners at Kentucky is simply a testament to just how good those drivers are. After all, these same three drivers — Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski — have combined to win 11 of this season’s 18 races and lead all others in victories posted this year. Reasons for the continuity among Kentucky race winners notwithstanding, expect Busch, Truex and Keselowski to once again battle it out at the front of the field for a chance to go to Victory Lane this weekend.

drivers to watch at Kentucky

By Jared Turner ▶▶ kyle busch. Kyle Busch went to Victory Lane in both the first and fifth NASCAR premier series race held at Kentucky Speedway. While Busch’s past few trips to the Bluegrass State haven’t bore as much fruit, he’s a threat to win everywhere these days, and this weekend will be no exception. ▶▶ martin truex jr. Martin Truex Jr. has won each of the past two races at Kentucky, both victories coming with his former team at Furniture Row Racing. Based on Truex’s recent performances at Kentucky and during most of his first season at Joe Gibbs Racing, no one will be surprised if he adds to his 2019 accolades this weekend. ▶▶ brad keselowski. The only winner of three Monster Energy Series races at Kentucky, Brad Keselowski last prevailed at the 1.5mile track in 2016. The Team Penske driver is also a three-time winner this season, and two of those victories have come at mileand-a-half tracks. ▶▶ jimmie johnson. Jimmie Johnson is 0-for-8 in attempts to win at Kentucky Speedway. Will Saturday night be when it all finally comes together? While there’s reason to believe it’s doubtful, Johnson and his No. 48 team have upped their game considerably over the past couple of weekends. To rule him out completely would be risky. ▶▶ kevin harvick. Any week now? While patience has to be growing thin among fans of Kevin Harvick, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver seems to have gotten consistently faster as the season has progressed. It might not happen at Kentucky, but the driver whose nickname is “Happy” is eventually going to break through somewhere.

A Cinderella Story to Remember Rudd Wins at Richmond while Nursing Injuries By Ben white

O

n Feb. 26, 1984, Ricky Rudd, driver of the Bud Moore Engineering Ford, enjoyed the Cinderella story of the Winston Cup season when he scored a victory in the Miller High Life 400 on the half-mile Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. Just two weeks earlier, Rudd endured a horrifying crash at Daytona International Raceway during the annual Busch Clash special non-points event for pole position winners. The end-overend flip left him sore and badly bruised but was able to enter the 400-lap race from the fourth starting position. The Chesapeake, Va., native paced himself in the early laps

at Richmond, watching Neil Bonnet and Darrell Waltrip wheel their Junior Johnsonowned Chevrolets in the lead collectively for 326 laps. Waltrip faded near the end while Bonnett fell out of contention for the win with a flat tire. Rudd lead the final 20 laps to win on Richmond’s original older asphalt surface originally built in the early 1940s. “It’s great to win a race at home,” Rudd said in Greg Fielden’s 40 Years of Stock car Racing. “I’ve had some good runs here but it’s something to win with the people cheering you on. It’s also a great relief to win one early in the year. It kind of takes the pressure off early on.” Rudd went on to log 22 additional Cup series victories before his retirement in 2007.

Debating NASCAR’s Weather Policies Danny B Talks, a regular fixture of the online NASCAR community, is back with a new video, and this time, it comes to us in a slightly different format than his usual Danny B Needs a Minute series. Last week, Justin Haley took his first win in the Cup Series, but under a red flag. NASCAR decided to call the race for rain, specifically after waiting out for most of the afternoon due to a lightning rule. In short, if lightning strikes within a certain distance of the track, NASCAR resets a clock. If the clock can run out without being reset by a strike close by, the race can resume.

0 2 4

kentucky Preview: July 12, 2019

This seemingly arcane practice is what led to Haley’s victory at Daytona this weekend, but it also led to a fair amount of controversy among fans online. Is the lightning rule necessary, and should NASCAR re-examine the way they handle dangerous storms? In today’s video, Danny B breaks down the history of this rule, the various outcomes it has led to over the years, and whether or not the rule is still viable. He also shares some exciting footage he’s compiled from Bristol. Watch the episode and check it out!

Today, at age 27, Suarez has won races in both the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and he’s in his third full season of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competition, driving the No. 41 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing.

hen Daniel Suarez captured the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship in 2016, he became the first Latin American, as well as the first NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate, to win a NASCAR National Series title. Born Jan. 7, 1992, in Monterrey, Mexico, Suarez’ initial foray into motorsports came via a family acquaintance, whose son was into karting. A young Suarez went to the track with the family for fun, and he immediately caught the racing bug. Over the next few years, Suarez dedicated himself to karting and eventually earned national karting titles in 2004 and 2008. Suarez augmented his karting in 2008 by racing Mini-Stocks, an official NASCAR PEAK Mexico support series featuring fourcylinder stock cars. He made his NASCAR PEAK Mexico Series debut on Sept. 6, 2009, and claimed that series’ rookie-ofthe-year title in 2010. He won 10 NASCAR Mexico Series races between 2012 and 2014. After making a handful of starts in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series,

His Dad and grandfather raced on short tracks around New York State when he was younger so his an interest in NASCAR came naturally. Like so many that raced, they would compete on Friday and Saturday nights and catch the Cup series races on the radio or television on Sunday. “There was just a lot of racing in my family,” Simpson said. “I raced a lot up North and started on the local tracks there. He came to NASCAR at the end of the 2000 season. He began his career with Dale Earnhardt Inc. with drivers Steve Park and Martin Truex Jr., followed by Michael Waltrip Racing with Truex and Stewart Haas Racing where he is today. Throughout the past 20 years, his job as tire technician has kept busy throughout full seasons on the schedule. He has also worked as an underneath and front end mechanic.

“When I went to the track the very first time (after the move south), I helped the tire guy,” Simpson said. I worked with Kerry Earnhardt in ARCA first and it just evolved into my job. It’s a lot of note taking and recording stuff to help get them as consistent as possible.” Simpson is the type to jump in when an extra hand is needed. At times, others on the crew ask for his assistance. “I also help the mechanics when they need help in the garage and stuff like that,” Simpson said. “During the week, I turn the tool box around and make sure it’s clean up and stocked and ready to go.”

The Arizona native got his elusive first win at Chicagoland on June 30. ▶▶ You had three consecutive runner-up finishes this spring. What did it take to get in Victory Lane? “The three races I finished runner-up in are all vastly different. Talladega, if it goes to the finish line, we probably win that race. Dover, if we get a late-race caution, we win there. Kansas, if we don’t have cautions, we probably win. To win a Cup race, it has to go 100 percent your way.” ▶▶ When you were chosen to drive the No. 88 car, what did it mean to get that call from Rick Hendrick? “It’s cool to just be part of the organization for a couple of years, plus spending some time filling in for Dale [Earnhardt Jr. in 2016]. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

Natalie Decker’s Beagle Buddies by jared turner

N

ASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series newcomer Natalie Decker is thankful for the opportunity this year to compete at a lot of race tracks for the first time. But when she’s at the track, she’s equally happy to have some familiar companions by her side. Those companions are an aging cat, appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a black-and-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire), and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Although the pets’ permanent residence isn’t Decker’s Charlotte, North Carolina, apartment but rather her parents’ larger and more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin, Decker adores these animals as if they were her own. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend. I swear they know how I do – if it’s a bad weekend or a good weekend – from the way they greet me when I come back into the motorhome after the race.” Decker’s parents also have a 14-year-old black lab named Bear and a 12-year-old Italian greyhound named Merlin. They don’t travel to the track, but Decker likewise delights in seeing them whenever she gets a chance. “I always had a beagle growing up, and when I

0 4 6

was really young, we had a Doberman Pinscher,” Decker noted. “So, there was always more than one dog in the house.” Now, as a 21-year-old NASCAR driver, Decker is as passionate about animals as ever. And, she holds an extra special place in her heart for the two beagles she can always count on to make race weekends just a little more care-free. “They’re kind of stress-relievers, and they’re so fun to play with, and they always make me happy,” she said. “They’re so cute. I mean, they’re beagles, so they bark a lot and they’re hairy, and I hate dog hair, so I have to have that little (hair) roller with me everywhere … but I love them so much.”

T

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com
