Eric Estepp Talks Improvements in Car Safety In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us a look ahead at what’s coming up in NASCAR. With Las Vegas coming in hot this weekend, there’s plenty to catch up on following the events in Daytona the past few weeks. But first, Eric catches us up on what’s happening with Ryan Newman now that he’s been released from the hospital. With less than 48 hours separating one of the most frightening 0 0 4

incidents seen in the sport to Ryan Newman, together with his two daughters, walking on his own out of the hospital doors, there’s plenty to remark upon. But that’s not all. Eric also looks ahead at what the fallout from Daytona might be, ranging from alterations to the Speedway package to a change in the attitudes of drivers themselves. How does Las Vegas look from here? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

things to watch at Las vegas BACK UP TO SPEED Las Vegas to Bring Normalcy Back to Sport With virtually everyone in the NASCAR world still a bit shaken in the wake of veteran driver Ryan Newman’s breathtaking crash on the final lap of the Daytona 500, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Race No. 2 of 36 on the 2020 schedule. Denny Hamlin, who won the 500, will be looking to continue his hot start while others will aim to rebound from a tough Daytona Speedweeks. Following are five things to watch for in and leading up to Sunday afternoon’s Pennzoil 400. by Jared Turner

A renewed focus on safety
A
lthough Ryan Newman’s frightening wreck on the final lap of the Daytona 500 didn’t result in the life-threatening injuries or potential loss of life that everyone feared, the accident will undoubtedly cause everyone in the sport — drivers, team owners, NASCAR executives and other stakeholders — to engage in discussions about ways to make the racing even safer than it already is. Particularly troubling about Newman’s wreck was that his No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford went completely airborne, landing on its roof, and the fact that the roll cage inside the car that protects the driver’s body appeared to be caved in from the impact it made with Corey LaJoie’s car in mid-air. If nothing else, Newman’s accident is almost certain to reignite discussions about ways to possibly create a safer brand of racing at NASCAR’s two superspeedways — Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway — where these kinds of accidents are most likely to occur.

A homecoming for the Busch brothers
W
hile there are few if any drivers who dislike racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, there are at least two drivers — brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch — who would likely race in Sin City every weekend if given the chance. That’s because the Busch siblings grew up in Las Vegas, are treated like royalty every time they return home, and spent time as teenagers racing on The Bullring — Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s famous 3/8-mile paved oval. Between the two of them, Kurt and Kyle have just one win on the main 1.5-mile LVMS layout, however. “Vegas always means a little bit more pressure — more pressure on myself — just because it’s the hometown and you want to win there,” Kyle said. “Thankfully, I have won there and I’ve knocked that one off the list, but certainly you want to win there every year. I love Vegas, the atmosphere and everything going on around that place.”

A continued outpouring of support for Ryan Newman
O
ne of the most seasoned and respected drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series garage, Ryan Newman sent ripple effects throughout the sport with his harrowing crash on the final lap of the Daytona 500. Newman — who just seconds before wrecking looked to possibly be headed for his second Daytona 500 win — was miraculously not only able to survive the carnage, but as of the next day was said to be talking with family members and medical professionals all while still under the supervision of doctors in a Daytona Beach hospital. While Newman’s immediate driving status was unknown as of press time, it’s safe to assume that he will remain at the forefront of everyone’s mind this weekend at Las Vegas. The outpouring of support that he received on social media and elsewhere in the minutes and hours after his accident were unlike anything seen in NASCAR in a long time, and that’s likely to continue in the coming days.

A footloose, fancy-free Denny Hamlin
L
ost in all the madness of Daytona was the fact that in addition to capturing his third Daytona 500 and second 500 in a row, Denny Hamlin also punched a ticket into the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs by virtue of winning the season opener. That means that Hamlin will spend the next 25 race weekends not worried about qualifying for the postseason but instead able to focus on amassing as many playoff points as possible for when the postseason begins. Any way you cut it, it’s a win-win situation for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver, who entered 2020 on the shortlist of championship favorites and only further cemented that status with his performance earlier this week at The World Center of Racing. Thanks to already being locked into the playoffs, Hamlin and his No. 11 team will be able to take strategy risks and try things that others can’t — starting this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Drivers Seeking Daytona Redemption
W
hile Ryan Newman was in a league all by himself in terms of suffering a difficult and disappointing outcome in the Daytona 500, a number of other drivers also left The World Center of Racing feeling frustrated and far less than satisfied. Among those drivers were perennial heavy-hitters such as Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Jimmie Johnson, who were all — for one reason or another — not in a position to contend for a victory in the closing laps of The Great American Race. In fact, with attrition at an atypically high rate, the top 10 finishers at Daytona consisted of several drivers who will be fortunate to crack the top 10 again this year. Look for all the drivers whose Daytona 500 didn’t go quite as they had imagined to show up in Las Vegas this weekend with a little extra fire in their belly and added desire to put the season opener completely in the rearview mirror.

■■ Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus celebrated a championship at Homestead in 2016.
An Unexpected Championship Jimmie Johnson’s 2016 win at Homestead might be his most clutch by Jared turner
I
t wasn’t Jimmie Johnson’s most dominant or impressive performance, but the 2016 NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway might have been his most clutch. Part of the Championship 4 for the first time since NASCAR instituted a “winner-take-all” finale showcasing four title contenders who enter the last race with equal points, Johnson did not come into the weekend as the title favorite. And for 95 percent or more of the race’s 268 laps, he didn’t look like the favorite, either. But after running behind championship foes Carl Edwards, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch for most of the evening, Johnson grabbed the lead for the first time on a pit strategy call with three laps to go. From there, he held on to win the race and make history by joining Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt as the only seven-time champions of NASCAR’s premier series. The result was a dramatic turnabout for Johnson, who at no point in the race looked like he had the car to win or finish better
0 2 6

than all three of his fellow title contenders. The race took a dramatic turn in Johnson’s favor, however, when Edwards — who led 47 laps and appeared to have the best car among the Championship 4 — got caught up in a crash on lap 257. Johnson and his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team led by veteran crew chief Chad Knaus took full advantage of Edwards’ misfortune, capturing the championship by three points over fourthplace finishing Logano of Team Penske. Busch finished sixth in the race, five points behind the newly minted seven-time champion. Johnson enjoyed a post-race celebration for the ages with his family and team after dancing his way into the NASCAR record books with a feat that only two others have ever matched. It’s possible no one else ever will.

In the Hotseat John Hunter Nemechek by Rob Tiongson
Each week during the NASCAR season, Rob Tiongson will share an interview with a driver. This week, he interviews NASCAR Cup Series driver John Hunter Nemechek.
■■ Nemechek drives the 38 car for Front Row Racing
▶▶ F1 and Netflix released a documentary called Drive to Survive which took viewers behind the scenes. Would you be open to NASCAR having a similar documentary? “Yeah, for sure. I would partake in some of it. I don’t know if I would show every aspect of what I do training wise and everything else. You always have to have a little bit of a leg up on your competitors, so you don’t want them seeing all of that.” But I would definitely partake in it. I think it’s cool. I’ve watched most of the documentary and it’s true what us drivers go through. There’s a lot that goes behind the scenes that a lot of people don’t know from the fitness side to the studying side. Most people think we go out and turn left but I promise you, it’s more than that.” ▶▶ Let’s say that you got to host “John Hunter Nemechek Day” for your fans at a racetrack. Who would you invite for this epic one-day festival? “I’ve been listening to Chris Lane, Post Malone, Logic, and Arizona. They’ve been on my playlist lately.” ▶▶ For your dream team, who would you assemble from the past and present as your teammates? From the past, I’d say “The Intimidator”–Dale Earnhardt. Jimmie Johnson would be a really good teammate from the training aspect and he’s knowledgeable and a seven-time Cup champ. And I’d say Kyle Busch for a driver now. He’s very good and talented.

Got Your Number Jarret Schalch applies the science of speed to the art of racing by Ben white
J
arrett Schalch, race engineer for Front Row Motorsports and driver Michael McDowell, followed a rather unique path into NASCAR’s Cup Series competition. He saw his first race in the sport the day he went to work for the Mooresville, N.C.-based team at Kansas Speedway in 2018. Prior to NASCAR, the 2017 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology was deeply involved in another form of auto racing. “I was finishing my Master’s degree in engineering at Cranfield University in Cranfield, England,” Schalch said. “While going to school, I would help smaller Formula Three race teams that needed a hand.” He has a rather busy week leading up to each of the 36 races on the Cup Series schedule. Many behind-the-scenes tasks must be completed before the team rolls into each race weekend. “On Monday, we debrief the past Sunday’s race,” Schalch said. “We talk about what we would do differently the next race and finalize our notes. Tuesday, we work on a practice plan and make sure we have our mock-ups done in the shop. Wednesday is when we finalize everything before we leave. Thursday or Friday, we fly out and practice, qualify Saturday, and race Sunday.” Schalch is constantly crunching number throughout any given Cup Series race to make sure the team is prepared to go the distance. “Sunday is hectic for a short period of time,” Schalch said. “In the morning, it’s getting notes in front of me. During the race, we are looking at as much data as we can. We’re looking at race strategy calls and laptime data and make sure we call the right time to pit.”

▶▶ As a native New Yorker, what does it mean to know others want to follow in your footsteps? “I was completely content with racing in New York on the weekends. I was fine with that. It signifies that if you believe in something, you can do whatever you want. I’m not sure if anybody will think that or not, but if they do, that’s pretty cool.” ▶▶ What are your concrete goals moving forward? “The ultimate goal is to continue progressing. I want to get better and move up the ranks. We’re going to take it one step at a time. It’s worked so far in my career, just winging it. We have to work really hard to the point where I’m ready to move up. This past year, I wasn’t ready for a full-time season in the trucks. Now, I finally feel that I’m prepared to do that.”

obby Allison, NASCAR’s 1983 Winston Cup champion, competed in America’s premier stock car series from 1961 through 1988 when a near-fatal crash at Pocono Raceway ended his career. On four occasions during his 25-year driving career, the Miami native elected to form his own teams to compete at NASCAR’s highest level. Allison’s first foray into team ownership came in 1965 when he fielded a red and white No. 2 Chevelle out of Hueytown, Ala. The following season, he won three times. In 1967, Allison won three short track races for Allison Racing. He also won for team owner Cotton Owens and two for Holman-Moody. Allison fielded Fords for half of the 1971 season before returning to the Holman Moody operation. In the 1972 season, he scored 10 victories with team owner Richard Howard. A lack

of communication with team manager Junior Johnson and crew chief Herb Nab ended their competitive and promising relationship far too soon. “On the track, we were a huge success, but off the track, we just didn’t communicate well at all,” Allison said. “That led to some not so good feelings, and by season’s end, we went our separate ways. Had we been able to remain together, there’s no telling how many championships we would have won together.” Allison fielded a team again in 1973 out of Hueytown. He was victorious

three times. He also won in 1974 ■■ Allison takes time for NASCAR fans at the track for team owner Roger Penske. Allison joined Penske as his primary driver in NASCAR in 1975 and 1976, winning again at Riverside and twice at Darlington Raceway. With no wins in 1976, Allison wanted more and prepared again for the 1977 season. While fielding an AMC Matador as he and Penske did in 1975, Allison ran strong but was plagued with numerous engine problems and no wins. Out of necessity, he ran his own cars during the last half of the 1985 season when he and Digard Racing split under unceremonious circumstances. His final tenure as team co-owner came with Bobby Allison Motorsports from 1990 through 1996 with several top drivers. All told, Allison collected 85 wins during his illustrious career with six victories coming in his cars. His is known as one of the most successful competitors in NASCAR’s 71-year history. “When you become a driver in NASCAR, you see things that you feel you can do better as a team owner,” Allison said. “I hired the best crew chiefs and crew members and paid them well. Still, we didn’t win as many as we should have. All you want to do is win, and forming your own team can sometimes make that happen.” 0 3 7
