What Happens When Drivers Say Too Much?

F

or fans, we want the drivers in NASCAR to be as open and direct with the fanbase as possible. In interviews, press, and events, we want the drivers to give us their honest take. But what happens when they do speak truly off-the-cuff? That’s what Eric Estepp, host and creator of the hit YouTube show Out of the Groove, wants to find out in his video today. The inciting incident to this week’s episode was Kyle Larson’s recent comments about Hendrick Motorsports, specifically about when and why they “start cheating” during the season. Some fans took offense, seeing Larson’s comments as a serious allegation. Others wrote it as off as simple Creator: Eric Estepp trash talk between drivers. Youtube: Fans have argued for a dog’s age whether trash talk is acceptable. But what Out of the Groove are the consequences? What are the ramifications for a driver’s career, or the Twitter: fate of their team sponsorships if they’re perceived as speaking out of turn? @EricEstepp17 Eric takes us through the recent history of driver controversy, as well as Instagram: @eric_estepp the fan and public reaction to it. So, where does he come down on the Patreon: issue, and what’s his official take on the Kyle Larson controversy? You’ll have @Out of the Groove to watch and find out! Sizing Up Sin City With two races in the books, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is primed and ready for Round Three of 2019 with the running of the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — the first track on the schedule that is exactly a mile-and-a-half in length. The New 2019 Aero Package In Its Fullness

F

or the 2019 Monster Energy Series season, NASCAR introduced an aerodynamics package with the baseline elements of a taller 8-inch by 61-inch rear spoiler, a larger front splitter featuring a 2-inch overhang, and a wider radiator pan. However, three variations of the rules package are being used in 2019, depending on the track. One variation features both a

smaller tapered spacer (to reduce engine horsepower) and aero ducts (to create tighter racing on some tracks longer than a mile). A second variation features the small spacer but not the ducts. A third variation will include neither, but only the baseline elements of the 2019 aero package. Variation No. 1 — which includes the totality of all the new elements — is set to be used for the first time this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where drafting is expected to play a key role for the first time ever. Busch Brothers Feeling Right At Home

N

o one anticipates racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway like brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch, who call Las Vegas home. While Kyle won at Vegas in 2009, older brother Kurt is still searching for an elusive first triumph in Sin City. “Vegas is different,” Kurt said. “It’s our hometown and we grew up racing on that little three-eighth-mile

4

bullring that is in the shadows of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Every time I go out there, it reminds me of all the people who helped Kyle and I — especially our dad, Tom.” Kyle is equally amped to return. “Vegas always means a little bit more pressure — more pressure on myself — just because it’s the hometown and you want to win there,” he said. “Thankfully, I’ve knocked that one off the list, but certainly you want to win there every year. I love Vegas, the atmosphere and everything going on around that place.” Las Vegas Preview: February 28, 2019

The Possibility Of Another Rough Race For HMS

A

side from a superb qualifying effort for the Daytona 500, Hendrick Motorsports has stumbled out of the gate in 2019. After two races, the 12-time Monster Energy Series championship-winning organization has one top-10 finish among its four drivers — a ninth-place finish by Jimmie Johnson in the Daytona 500, a race in which Johnson was involved in multiple wrecks but

3

benefited from heavy attrition to move up in the final finishing order. The organization founded and owned by NASCAR Hall of Famer Rick Hendrick hopes to find its footing this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a track where Johnson is a four-time winner but no Hendrick driver has been to Victory Lane since 2010. The fact that no Hendrick driver finished in the top 10 in either of last season’s two races at Vegas doesn’t bode particularly well for the organization’s hopes of a breakout race this weekend. An Indicator Of What To Expect In 2019

T

he old adage holds that whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. While that might usually be true, it likely won’t be for Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. As the first 1.5-mile track on the schedule, Las Vegas is a good barometer for where drivers and teams stand moving forward. That’s particularly the case this weekend as drivers compete for the first

2

time with all of the elements that make up a new rules package that adds downforce in an effort to stabilize handling — and, in turn, create closer, more exciting racing. Drivers who run well Sunday will likely do so at the other remaining mile-and-a-half tracks on the schedule. The one exception might be Homestead-Miami, where the cars will feature the smaller tapered spacer being used at Vegas, but not the aero ducts that transfer air to the side of the car away from the front tires. A Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski Battle

K

evin Harvick and Brad Keselowski have combined to win five of the past six Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with Harvick winning twice and Keselowski going to Victory Lane three times — most recently in last September’s first race of the playoffs. Both drivers have gotten off to solid starts

in 2019, with Keselowski scoring the victory and Harvick finishing fourth last weekend at Atlanta, so the odds would certainly seem to favor one of them taking care of business on Sunday afternoon in Sin City. Even with a different rules package than the one used in last year’s two Monster Energy Series races at Las Vegas, don’t be surprised if both Harvick and Keselowski run at or near the front and end up battling each other for the victory. They’re running just that well this season, and they’re just that good at Las Vegas. Las Vegas Preview: February 28, 2019

After a strong start to 2019, Busch seems primed for a possible return to Victory Lane in his hometown. ▶▶ Riding high after a win at Atlanta, Brad Keselowski has momentum and history on his side heading to Las Vegas Motor Speedway — a track where he’s won three of the past six races, including last fall’s playoff opener. ▶▶ Kevin Harvick has won twice in the last five races at Las Vegas and is the defending winner of Sunday’s Pennzoil 400. With a strong fourth-place finish at Atlanta last weekend, Harvick looks to be on his game in 2019. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson’s four wins at Las Vegas are the most all-time at the 1.5-mile track. But Johnson hasn’t prevailed in Sin City since 2010. Vegas is perhaps a good place for the Hendrick Motorsports driver to jumpstart his season after a rough weekend at Atlanta. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. won at Las Vegas in 2017 and finished third the last time NASCAR’s top series convened at the track. Truex will no doubt be extra motivated this weekend, after blaming lapped cars for his failure to win last weekend at Atlanta. Las Vegas Preview: February 28, 2019

n March 29, 2015, Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, managed to avoid 16 caution periods spanning 119 laps to win the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway. The Chesterfield, Va., native sealed the deal by passing Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing

Ford, with 28 laps remaining in the 500-lap race. It was Hamlin’s fifth-career victory at the track and first since 2010. “By no means did we have a smooth race at all, and we still won,” Hamlin said. “So that to me shows what we’re capable of. “My goal at the end of my career is to be whispered as

one of those great short-track guys that I grew up watching, and hopefully we’re able to continue the success on it.” His biggest challenge came from Brad Keselowski, driver of the No. 2 Team Penske Ford, with five laps remaining. Keselowski tried everything but couldn’t get past Hamlin for the lead. “I’m a little disappointed that I’m not taking home the clock (trophy),” Keselowski said. “I did everything I could other than wreck him. I hit him pretty good a couple of times. Don’t know what more I could have done but drive through him.” There were 31 lead changes among 12 drivers with Kevin Harvick leading 154 and Joey Logano leading 108.

Tyler Reddick By Keith Waltz

On his journey from the tiny dirt tracks of Northern California to the 2018 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship, Tyler Reddick took the road less traveled. Instead of ascending the traditional career path of Outlaw Karts, Mini Sprints, Midgets and Sprint Cars, Reddick took a detour and ended up racing something with fenders – a dirt Late Model. “It came down to age and what I was able to run at that time. I was racing Mini Sprints and we were trying to run some Midgets and Sprint Cars, but I wasn’t old enough to race a Midget or Sprint Car,” said Reddick. “So after running Sprint Cars for about a summer in Indiana, we shifted to Late Models.” Reddick was only 15 when he started making noise in the Late Model ranks and his

transition to pavement racing started after he caught the attention of NASCAR veteran and fellow dirt racer Ken Schrader. Proving that Schrader has an eye for talent, Reddick drove a Ken Schrader Racing entry to victory in his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series start during the series’ 2012 visit to legendary Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina. Six years later, Reddick claimed the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship in a JR Motorsports Chevrolet. This season, the 23-year-old racer from Corning, California, is driving for Richard Childress Racing in an effort to defend his title. Jeffrey Earnhardt’s Golden Opportunity BY Jared Turner

W ith primar y sponsorship from Xtreme Concept s, Jef frey Earnhardt is embarking on a nine - race NASCAR Xf init y Series schedule with Joe Gibbs Racing. Here’s what the four th generation driver had to say. How excited are you about 2019? It’s huge, obviously. This is an opportunity every driver dreams of – getting to run in the best of the best equipment out there. To be involved with a team that, No. 1, is so good, and, No. 2, is coming off such a successful season last year with Christopher Bell, is really, really exciting and a dream come true.

Do you feel like this is the big break you’ve been waiting for? Yeah, for sure. It’s put up or shut up time. This whole time you’ve been wanting to get in good equipment to go prove that you can drive and run up front and be successful in the sport, and now I’m being given that opportunity. What would you consider a successful season? Go win all nine. That would be a successful season. The thing is; the equipment’s there. But it is racing and at the end of the day, everything’s got to go your way. I think the biggest thing is going to be me just trying to do my part as the driver, because they’ve got quite the stacked crew at Gibbs to make sure the rest is all taken care of. What’s your relationship like with Xtreme Concepts? It all started this past year. Landon Ash, the owner of Xtreme Concepts, is a big-hearted guy and a guy that I now consider a really close friend who just really wanted to see me get an opportunity to be in successful equipment and get a chance at this deal. That said a lot to me about the kind of person he is, and he’s also done so much in our military community. Their company trains a lot of military dogs, police dogs, TSA dogs and bomb-detection dogs. Spotlight They do a lot there and also on the training side with special ops guys. Landon is a huge supporter of our military and our country, and that’s something I’m really big on, too, so we jell together pretty good and we like to have fun on the side and just enjoy our time. It’s been a great partnership, and they’re giving me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I will be forever thankful for. How do you spend your downtime? When I’m not racing, you tend to find me out

Landon Ash, CEO of Xtreme Concepts

What were your first impressions of Jeffrey? Jeffrey is as genuine as it gets. The person you see on TV and on social media is the same guy that you would see if you were hanging out with him at his house or in the duck blind. He loves a day with his dog in the boat or in the field just as much as he is invested in his work and his fans that come with it. After seeing his devotion to the veteran community and the gold star families, the

in the woods somewhere doing something outdoors. I grew up as a big outdoorsman, and I try to hunt as much as I can. I get enjoyment out of knowing I’m eating something that I went out and harvested myself instead of something you bought in the grocery store that you’re not really sure where it came from. I spend a lot of time outdoors, whether I’m hunting, riding four-wheelers, hanging out with buddies, whatever it may be.

impression that he made stuck with me. What are some ways Jeffrey can build the Xtreme Concepts brand and help you reach a larger audience? Jeffrey is a fourthgeneration Earnhardt and the pedigree that comes with that name holds a lot of weight with the sport and the fans. We want to highlight our foundation – First Foundation – that gives back and supports our military and first responders, those on scene first, foreign or domestic. It is striking that those

groups of people that put themselves in harm’s way to protect American values and freedom are not getting the proper support. They are not appreciated enough for what they do, and their heroic actions are taken for granted, and that in itself is a national tragedy. What do you hope Jeffrey accomplishes this season? I expect big things in 2019. The sport will be celebrating another Earnhardt in Victory Lane. I expect for Jeffrey to be able to show the world what he is capable of and be competitive week in and week out.

spotlight Dr. Jason Cormier spoke to NASCAR teams about safety and prevention at Daytona International Speedway.

MSG: Making Racing Safer By Dan Guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As NASCAR unveils a new aero package in 2019, Cormier continues his focus on

concussion prevention and education. He maintains that preventing concussions among race car drivers actually starts several days before the race. “One of our biggest focuses for drivers is hydrating their bodies pre-race,” Cormier said. “It’s most important to cut back on processed foods, increase hydration for three or four days prior to the race, increase carbs, and decrease proteins and fibers on race day. They don’t hold up as well as carbs on race day.” Cormier also recommends that drivers familiarize themselves with the concussion protocol at each track. Sometimes, a driver can feel disoriented or confused after a wreck if he or she is unfamiliar with the track’s layout.

spotlight

Introducing the Q-Collar One piece of technology that has Dr. Jason Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountaindwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull.

“Understand the protocol,” Cormier said. “The scariest part for the driver is not knowing what’s next. Don’t panic, settle down. Learn the system before you get in the car.” Many people who suffer concussions put their trust in doctors who are unfamiliar with diagnosing and treating concussions. Cormier suggests that anyone who is diagnosed with a concussion seek out a specialist. “General practitioners might not be certified in how to look at concussions,” Cormier said. “You need a practitioner who knows how to treat it.” Once a doctor diagnoses a driver with a concussion, the athlete must cross a number of milestones before returning to competition. For example, the protocol might include resting, then a ride on a stationary bike, then a run on a treadmill, then a run on land for 20-30 minutes, then a 50- to 60-minute workout with more intense exercises, then weights added to the exercise, and

then, following clearance by a certified specialist, a return to competition. “The biggest issue we have now is overly diagnosed concussions,” Cormier said. “A headache is a common symptom of a concussion, but we can’t forget that people have anxiety attacks, dehydration, migraines and tension headaches due to stress when they haven’t had a concussion. “When you get a concussion, once the injury has ended and you’re symptom-free, you are no more at risk of suffering another concussion. But if you return to action before you’re clear of concussion injury and the associated symptoms, you can absolutely get more concussions. We’re trying to teach people how to track the actual injuries – not the symptoms.”

A Fresh Start

Matt Tifft excited to get going with FRM By Joseph Wolkin

A

s Matt Tifft kicks off his rookie year in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, he has modest expectations. He takes over car No. 36 for Front Row Motorsports, a challenge in of itself for the organization, re-expanding to three cars. But he’s ready for the road ahead.

Matt Tifft is in his rookie season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

What is it like to know you’re a Cup Series driver? “It’s hard to completely wrap my mind around it. It’s certainly exciting. The jump to the Cup Series is something that I don’t really know what it’ll entail. You have to go into it open-minded. I have to see what I can learn. I have to get my feet wet and learn as much as I can as quickly as I can. With the new rules package, no one really knows what to expect. We’re going to have to do some quick learning.” What’s it going to be like having your Xfinity Series peers in the Cup garage? “It’ll be nice to go racing against Daniel Hemric and Ryan Preece. With the new rules package, I can imagine we’ll be racing around each other quite a bit. I think between the rules package and Rookie of the Year race, it’ll be an interesting season. I’ll look at those guys as a benchmark for where to be running. It’s certainly a great time to jump in there, with a solid group to measure myself against.” Las Vegas Preview: February 28, 2019

crew member spotlight: CURTIS TINCHER Curtis Tincher, Tire Specialist for Rick Ware Racing

When Persistence Pays Off Tincher Happy to be in NASCAR’s Garage BY BEN WHITE

C

urtis Tincher, tire specialist for Rick Ware Racing and driver B.J. McLeod, was introduced to NASCAR in the mid1960s at 7 years old when his uncle raced in NASCAR’s Grand American division. Tincher joined him for the annual night race before what was then the July Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Going there in the summer was exciting and a long way from his Maryland home. “I grew up liking racing and Richard Petty,” Tincher said. “With Baltimore not being the

hub of racing, I graduated from high school and moved south and started bugging people for a job.” After becoming geographically closer to racing, he first began work as a carpenter, assistant grocery store manager and furniture manufacturer. Each of his work schedules allowed for time to race. “While working for Food Lion, I was off one weekend a month so I started signing in with a Cup team out of Asheboro, N.C.,” Tincher said. “(The driver) didn’t make the race at Talladega one year so I started walking around asking if anyone needed help. That’s when I got linked up with Steve Grissom at Diamond Ridge Motorsports. I had my foot in the door and have been going since the mid-1990s.” Along with Diamond Ridge Motorsports, Tincher has worked for Joe Gibbs Racing, Petty Enterprises, Yates Racing, TRG Motorsports, Turner-Scott Motorsports, RCR Enterprises and Rick Ware Racing. Over the years, Tincher found his niche working with tires, citing the specialized position allows a feeling of being one’s own boss. Aside from stepping away for part of the 2018 season due to knee surgery, he’s been in NASCAR’s garage areas for the past 25 years. Las Vegas Preview: February 28, 2019

Press release

Front Row Motorsports Announces Increased Partnership for David Ragan CITGARD to Help Power Team Throughout 2019

F

ront Row Motorsports (FRM) today announced an expanded partnership with CITGO® Petroleum Corporation and its CITGARD® brand that began last season with David Ragan and the No. 38 team. The CITGARD brand is the primary sponsor on the No. 38 Ford Mustang throughout this season. Ragan will carry the CITGARD colors at the events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March, Michigan International Speedway in June and the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course in September. The brand will also be featured as an associate sponsor all season. CITGARD began its partnership last season with FRM at Darlington Raceway, paying tribute

to Dale Jarrett during the annual “Throwback Weekend” with a red and white scheme. The popular feedback from race fans and success of the program led to the increased commitment with FRM and Ragan this season. “Everyone at the Front Row Motorsports organization and David Ragan worked hard to ensure that we had a wonderful experience and that our program was a success for us last year,” said Brian Paulson, CITGO General Manager Lubricants. “In return, our customers and fans were thrilled and now we’re proud to increase our partnership with David and the team this season.” CITGARD heavy duty engine oils are next generation oils formulated with proprietary additive technology that protects engines from running at higher temperatures and fuel injection pressures, while meeting tighter wear limits and lower emission requirements. The Front Row Motorsports transporters rely on CITGARD throughout the season. “It’s great to have CITGARD return to our program this season,” said Ragan. “As a team that travels thousands of miles from race to race, you need reliable, heavy-duty engine lubricants to ensure we get to the track and back home.” Fritz Sports & Event Enterprises will again oversee the partnership. Nascar Pets

Drivers and their furry friends BY Jared Turner

ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom.

“Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

SureCan: A New Way to Dispense Fuel BY Jared Turner

W

ho likes spilling gasoline when you’re simply trying to fuel up your lawnmower? Thanks to a revolutionary, highly sophisticated but easyto-use product appropriately dubbed the “SureCan,” pouring gas doesn’t have to be so frustrating anymore. In fact, the SureCan makes pouring a downright enjoyable experience. “The most important benefit that people see right off is it’s just easier to use,” said Brad Ouderkirk, the founder and CEO of SureCan,

Inc. “It takes all the pain out of it. When you are filling anything up, you can hold the can in a comfortable position, you can see what you are filling up and you’re not standing on your head.” Ouderkirk owned a cabinet shop where he built custom cabinets when he first conceived the SureCan concept about 10 years ago. “There was an awful lot of wood in that first prototype since that was what I had,” Ouderkirk recalled. “I put it all together and started showing my new gas can prototype to everyone who would listen, and then asked them if this was something they would buy if it was on the market. I just got a resounding, ‘Yes, if that thing was available, I would take one in a second.’” Las Vegas Preview: February 28, 2019

Spotlight After some eight years of dreaming, planning, development and testing, the SureCan was ready to hit the stores in the spring of 2015. Now, it’s being sold by all the major outdoors retailers – Lowe’s, Menards, Tractor Supply and Ace Hardware. Meanwhile, SureCan, Inc. – headquartered in Utah but with its factory in Lebanon, Tennessee – has more than tripled in size. “People have really taken to our gas can since it’s a lot safer and since the gas only

‘People Are Noticing’

In addition to being picked up by major retailers, the SureCan has received global recognition. In 2014, Ouderkirk took his new product to the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas where the SureCan won the Most Innovative New Product Award and a Retailers Choice Award. Later, the SureCan was featured on the DIY Network’s hit show, “I Want That,” and as a Top 100 Product for This Old House Magazine. The SureCan has since been selected a Silver Winner at the Edison Awards in New York City where 300

goes where it’s supposed to go,” Ouderkirk said. “It’s also greener so you’re not spilling all over the ground and getting all the emissions into the environment. And, it’s the easiest gas can to use. “The can is 100-percent made in the USA and it will always be that. We’re going to always keep it here. That’s important to us. I think we’re on our way to changing how people dispense fuel into their machines.”

judges around the world voted on new innovative products. “People are noticing that we’re different and that we’ve actually changed the way people do things from here on out,” Ouderkirk said. “Basically, our growth is attributed to our innovation. All we have to do is get in front of people and people immediately see the benefit and they’re purchasing our cans.” One of the most innovative features of the SureCan – which is available in both 2.2- and 5-gallon sizes – is its thickness. Ouderkirk recalls conducting an

informal test last summer when he intentionally left two 5-gallon cans in the back of his truck. After a week, he couldn’t smell the gasoline. “Our can is six layers thick,” Ouderkirk said. “One layer in the middle is a barrier layer that locks all the vapors in the can. One thing you’ll notice right away is that if the can is in your shed or garage, you’ll never smell gasoline, because the vapors are locked in so tight. It does its job. It locks the vapors in and keeps the emissions from escaping into the atmosphere.”
