Bad Luck and Heartbreak in Vegas In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his freshoff-the-plane reaction to all the fast racing and winners from all the competition this weekend in Las Vegas. While Logano is starting to set a pattern with his victories in the Pennzoil 400, it was Matt DiBenedetto who stole the show in his first 1.5 mile run for the Wood Brothers team. His second place finish at an intermediate 0 0 4

track validated not only his seat at the storied racing team, but also the support of his fanbase through the years. But that’s not all! The Top 20 finishers was full of great stories, including the block of Penske cars near the front, another validation for the mid-season crew chief switcheroo. Find out all the best stories, along with where it lands on the Groovy Gauge, in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

things we learned at Las Vegas The Excitement Continues NASCAR carries momentum from Daytona for another unexpected race weekend hile perhaps not as edge-of-your-seat enthralling as the Daytona 500 six days prior, Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway produced no shortage of drama, close racing or unexpected on-track developments. In the end, though, it was a familiar face — that of 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano — celebrating his second consecutive spring race victory in Sin City. Following are five key takeaways from Sunday’s entertaining showdown, which served as the kickoff race of the NASCAR Cup Series’ three-race “West Coast Swing.”

It Was a Rough Day For Joe Gibbs Racing

W

inners of last week’s season-opening Daytona 500 and 19 of 36 points-paying races a season ago, Joe Gibbs Racing was justifiably expected to factor heavily into the mix at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Instead, the organization failed to place a single car in the top 10 and placed just one car — the No. 18 of hometown boy Kyle Busch — in the top 15. Any way you slice it, this was a rough afternoon for Toyota’s flagship organization, which still figures to play prominently in the championship scenario as the season rolls along. JGR driver Martin Truex Jr., who finished 19th at Vegas, performed best among the four JGR cars before making contact with the wall — an outcome he blamed on Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch. “He kept blocking until I hit the fence,” Truex said. “Then it was tire rub, blew the tire and hit the fence. That was it.”

Fate Denies Chase ElliotT An Early Season Victory

H

istorically, it takes Chase Elliott at least a fourth of the NASCAR Cup Series season to warm up and really kick into winning form. That may not be the case this season, however, as the second-generation driver — in Week Two at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a track where he had never won — picked up two stage wins and had what was by all accounts the race’s most dominant car. It was all for naught, however, when Elliott’s race-leading No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet spun and hit the wall in Turn 1 on lap 221 of 267 due to a tire failure on the left rear. Elliott managed to continue on but finished a lap down in 26th — far from the result he had hoped for or the one he deserved. The encouraging part for NASCAR’s two-time Most Popular Driver, though, is that he looks to already be in midseason form and it’s only February.

Ryan Blaney, Todd Gordon Gambled and Lost

L

as Vegas is, after all, the gambling capitol of the world, so it was quite appropriate that Ryan Blaney and crew chief Todd Gordon opted to give up the lead and come to pit road for tires when the caution flag waved with just under five laps to go. Their gamble was that most of the cars behind Blaney would follow him to pit road, allowing Blaney to lose little if any track position and return to the track with a chance to still get a win. Instead, seven lead-lap cars stayed on the track and Blaney restarted on the sixth row — with no realistic chance of winning — when the green flag waved again with two laps remaining. Then, to make matters worse, Blaney’s car banged off of two others coming to the white flag before the field was frozen and the race was called official due to a last-lap wreck. Instead of celebrating a playoff-clinching win, Blaney finished a disappointing 11th.

Jimmie Johnson’s Farewell Tour is Off to a Solid Start

I

n his last full season as a NASCAR Cup Series driver, Jimmie Johnson is a sentimental favorite just about anywhere he goes to race this season. On Sunday at Las Vegas, the seven-time champion delivered a crowd-pleasing result and proved he’s far from done by coming home with a fifth-place finish — his best since a third-place showing at Daytona in July. Perhaps even more encouraging for Johnson and his No. 48 team was the fact that his finish was no fluke, as it came on the heels of spending much of the race in and around the top five. Johnson, of course, hasn’t gone to Victory Lane since winning at Dover in early June 2017, but Sunday’s outcome in Sin City was a positive sign that the Hendrick Motorsports driver could be poised to make 2020 a great season and finish out his Hall of Fame career on an appropriately positive note.

5 things we Learned

1

Joey Logano is Going to be a Force Once Again

J

oey Logano may not have had the fastest car on Sunday at Las Vegas, but he certainly had one of the best cars and, more importantly, played the strategy game to perfection by opting to remain on track when the two frontrunners chose to hit pit road for tires with fewer than five laps remaining. Logano, who had been running third when the caution flag waved, inherited the lead by staying out and then held on in a two-lap dash to the checkered flag that was abbreviated by a wreck on the final lap. Logano, who picked up his second consecutive spring race victory in Sin City, has already punched a ticket into the 2020 playoffs and looks to be well on his way to another stellar season with his No. 22 Team Penske group, which is being led this year by Paul Wolfe who replaced longtime pit boss Todd Gordon in an offseason shuffling of Penske crew chiefs.

Just Sayin’

It’s time for Kyle Busch to stop truck racing Enough is enough. With his victory on Friday at Las Vegas, Kyle Busch has now won the last seven truck races he’s entered. But the scariest part is that Busch is scheduled to run four more truck races this season. Never mind he’s already the series’ all-time wins leader with 57 victories, or that he’s the two-time and reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion. NASCAR has made strides in recent years to limit Cup drivers’ participation in its lower divisions, but the time has clearly come to do more. Jared Turner ▶▶ Ryan Newman shouldn’t rush back The NASCAR world learned on Sunday that Ryan Newman suffered an undisclosed head injury but no other major injuries at the Daytona 500. Newman, in a prepared statement, also made it known that he intends to back in the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford this season and apply for a NASCAR waiver that would make him playoff eligible. While it should thrill anyone to know that Newman will race again, one can only hope he is fully healed before returning. To do otherwise would be simply irresponsible.

■■ Kyle Busch holds the all-time wins record in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.

▶▶ Rain, rain go away Two official race weekends of racing in the 2020 NASCAR season, two weekends of racing affected in large part by rain. After rain forced the postponement to Monday of all but the opening few laps of the Daytona 500, wet weather also reared its ugly head in typically arid Las Vegas by forcing NASCAR to push most of Saturday’s Xfinity Series race to Sunday evening — after the NASCAR Cup Series race. Let’s hope NASCAR finally catches a break from Mother Nature this weekend in Southern California.

Rusty Reacts to the Truck Race at Vegas This week Rusty Walrus is back with his reaction to the Strat 200 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Hometown hero Kyle Busch absolutely ran away with the victory, posting a huge margin of victory over Johnny Sauter, and now Rusty is here to give us his take on the whole ordeal. First though, Rusty wants to know about your hype level for this week’s race. Coming off of the extraordinary racing last week in Daytona, with Enfinger and Anderson’s battle right up to the 0 2 6

Las Vegas Rearview: Feb. 24, 2020

line, it seems the hype going into Vegas was more subdued. Rusty’s reaction focuses on the broadcast, and all the various storylines that went unmentioned as Busch’s dominating run became apparent. Did they really run out of things to say? And how does this play into the effect of lower engagement online? Check out Rusty’s take, and be sure to let him know your take in the comments!
