With just three races in the books, it’s hard to draw many firm, sweeping conclusions about where things stand with the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. But before NASCAR continues its West Coast Swing with a trip to ISM Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona, here are five lessons we did learn from Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Motor Speedway: Las Vegas Rearview: March 4, 2019

Track Position Was King
W
hile some drivers, most notably Kyle Busch, managed to recover from a major setback at Las Vegas, track position proved to be a precious commodity as multiple drivers complained about struggling to pass with the new rules package. “I think we had a top-10 car; we just never got the track position we needed,” said Austin Dillon, who was handicapped by a penalty

for too many crewmembers in contact with the pit service area. “We lost it from the beginning, and when you lose it, you can’t ever get it back.” Ninth-place finisher Chase Elliott echoed that sentiment. “It was really important to have track position and hard to pass at times,” Elliott said. “You had to be really good and really think about your passes to get them done. The really fast guys could do it, so it’s not impossible, but you definitely have to think through that a little bit.” Las Vegas Rearview: March 4, 2019

The New Rules Package Needs Refining
S
unday’s highly anticipated full rollout of the 2019 Monster Energy Series rules package produced both mix results and mixed opinions. While some drivers, including race winner Joey Logano, had nothing but high praise for the new aero package, others such as third-place finisher Kyle Busch weren’t as keen on it. “I think it was great,” Logano said. “I thought the

racing was awesome. I don’t really know what else to give you if you didn’t like it. The racing is close, you’re side by side. There’s aggressive blocks and big moves and bumping and banging. That’s NASCAR, baby.” However, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell admitted after the race that the rules package still needs some refining. “Was it tremendous improvement (from the 2018 rules package)? Probably not,” O’Donnell said. “But as a fan, you want to see lead changes; we saw that today.” Las Vegas Rearview: March 4, 2019

Kyle Busch Blames Himself For Missing Sweep
A
fter winning Friday’s Gander Outdoors Truck Series race and Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, hometown boy Kyle Busch was intent on completing the weekend sweep in Sunday’s Monster Energy Series race. But a drive-through penalty for speeding on pit road on lap 129 of 267 proved too much

for Busch to overcome. Busch, who had been leading at the time of his pit stop, returned to the track in the 24th spot and one lap down with fewer than 30 laps to go in Stage 2. He rallied to finish third but was unsatisfied and blamed no one but himself. “If we didn’t have the speeding penalty on pit road, we would have won this race, but the guys gave me a great piece and we were certainly fast there at the end,” Busch said. “I certainly screwed up our day coming to pit road there.” Las Vegas Rearview: March 4, 2019

Team Penske Has Its Act Together
O
n top of bringing home a 1-2 finish at Las Vegas courtesy of race winner Joey Logano and runner-up Brad Keselowski, Team Penske has now won two of the season’s first three races, with Keselowski having gone to Victory Lane in Week Two at Atlanta. A third Team Penske driver, Ryan Blaney, has yet to finish in the top 20 this
season but has led two of the first three races and was especially stout for a while at Atlanta where he spent 41 laps out front. While it might be too early to anoint Team Penske as the organization most likely to bring home the 2019 championship, this much is clear: Team Penske is putting fast cars on the track. “It’s not three different teams; it’s one team, and I think that’s why you see our cars typically running well,” team owner Roger Penske said after Logano’s Vegas victory. Logano’s Quest For Back-To-Back Is On
N
ot since 2010, when Jimmie Johnson won the last of the five championships he captured in succession, has a champ of NASCAR’s premier series made it back-to-back titles. By punching his ticket into the 2019 Monster Energy Series playoffs with a victory on Sunday at Las Vegas, Joey Logano has crossed the first major hurdle in bucking the recent trend of champions not
repeating as champ the next year. Moreover, having a win this early in the season will allow Logano and his No. 22 Team Penske team to be more deliberate in their pursuit of playoff points, since they won’t have to worry about jeopardizing a potential playoff berth. “It allows you to be a little more aggressive,” said Logano’s crew chief, Todd Gordon. “That’s how you call a race or some of the things you do. You can be a little bit more aggressive to try to go get wins.” Las Vegas Rearview: March 4, 2019

I’M JUST SAYIN’ as a savior of sorts for NASCAR in a season when the sport is desperately trying to regain its footing in ticket sales and TV ratings. While it might have been tempting to fiercely defend the rules package, especially given the sharp critiques of many fans and even a few drivers, NASCAR executive Steve O’Donnell instead offered a very balanced and fair-minded post-race assessment. “I think it was good to see directionally that guys could come up through the pack and make a pass for the lead,” O’Donnell said. “But there’s still work to do. It’s early.” Asked what kind of racing would satisfy him, O’Donnell added: “I think what happens in that situation is you have more passes for the lead and you have cars closer together. I think we’re on the march to do that, and I think we saw some of that today, but we can continue to improve upon it.” Hats off to O’Donnell for not trying paint a rosier picture than the reality of the matter: This rules package is a work-in-progress.

NASCAR Esports Scene Overview What’s Happening in the iRacing and NASCAR Heat Pro Scene? BY Matteo Marcheschi
T
he NASCAR eSports world has been abuzz this week, as the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for its second pointspaying round. Flipsid3 Tactics driver Ryan Michael Luza grabbed the victory, passing teammate Timmy Hill on the final restart as Hill collided with the wall after contact with
Wood Brothers driver and reigning series champion Ray Alfalla, who appeared to be hampered by lag. Luza led a race-high 79 laps, with Daytona winner Zack Novak chomping at the bit behind him. Novak did everything he could to get by Luza, but was forced to settle for second at the end of the day. Logan Clampitt, Bobby Zalenski, and Keegan Leahy rounded out the top ten. A win and a second-place finish place Novak atop the series standings, three points in front of Luza. Five points behind Luza sits G2 eSports driver Keegan Leahy, the only driver Las Vegas Rearview: March 4, 2019

Nascar Esports besides Novak to score top five finishes in both races so far this season. For its third round of the season, the series heads to Auto Club Speedway, on Tuesday, March 12 at 9 PM eastern time. The race will be broadcast on the iRacing Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network on YouTube. Many of the drivers also stream their races on Twitch. On the other side of the NASCAR eSports world, there’s the eNASCAR Heat Pro League, which takes place in 704 Games’ NASCAR Heat 3. Earlier this year, participants for the league were ranked through an openregistration process, where players raced as much as they could for the duration of the
registration period. More recently, the top 100 ranked drivers have participated in three sets of showcase races, including Cup cars at Daytona, XFINITY cars at the Charlotte oval, and Trucks at Martinsville. On March 10, 2019, the draft for this league will take place at ISM Raceway, with 14 reallife NASCAR teams drafting 28 of these drivers, one from XBox and one from PlayStation. The league itself will consist of a 16-race season, starting this spring, and ending during the real-life 2019 NASCAR playoffs. The league will be broadcast on NASCAR.com and Motorsport.com.

Here’s what the four th generation driver had to say. How excited are you about 2019? It’s huge, obviously. This is an opportunity every driver dreams of – getting to run in the best of the best equipment out there. To be involved with a team that, No. 1, is so good, and, No. 2, is coming off such a successful season last year with Christopher Bell, is really, really exciting and a dream come true.
Do you feel like this is the big break you’ve been waiting for? Yeah, for sure. It’s put up or shut up time. This whole time you’ve been wanting to get in good equipment to go prove that you can drive and run up front and be successful in the sport, and now I’m being given that opportunity. What would you consider a successful season? Go win all nine. That would be a successful season. The thing is; the equipment’s there. But it is racing and at the end of the day, everything’s got to go your way. I think the biggest thing is going to be me just trying to do my part as the driver, because they’ve got quite the stacked crew at Gibbs to make sure the rest is all taken care of. What’s your relationship like with Xtreme Concepts? It all started this past year. Landon Ash, the owner of Xtreme Concepts, is a big-hearted guy and a guy that I now consider a really close friend who just really wanted to see me get an opportunity to be in successful equipment and get a chance at this deal. That said a lot to me about the kind of person he is, and he’s also done so much in our military community. Their company trains a lot of military dogs, police dogs, TSA dogs and bomb-detection dogs. What were your first impressions of Jeffrey? Jeffrey is as genuine as it gets. The person you see on TV and on social media is the same guy that you would see if you were hanging out with him at his house or in the duck blind. He loves a day with his dog in the boat or in the field just as much as he is invested in his work and his fans that come with it. After seeing his devotion to the veteran community and the gold star families, the

I expect big things in 2019. The sport will be celebrating another Earnhardt in Victory Lane. I expect for Jeffrey to be able to show the world what he is capable of and be competitive week in and week out.

A

As NASCAR unveils a new aero package in 2019, Cormier continues his focus on
concussion prevention and education. He maintains that preventing concussions among race car drivers actually starts several days before the race. “One of our biggest focuses for drivers is hydrating their bodies pre-race,” Cormier said. “It’s most important to cut back on processed foods, increase hydration for three or four days prior to the race, increase carbs, and decrease proteins and fibers on race day. They don’t hold up as well as carbs on race day.” Cormier also recommends that drivers familiarize themselves with the concussion protocol at each track. Sometimes, a driver can feel disoriented or confused after a wreck if he or she is unfamiliar with the track’s layout.

“Understand the protocol,” Cormier said. “The scariest part for the driver is not knowing what’s next. Don’t panic, settle down. Learn the system before you get in the car.” Many people who suffer concussions put their trust in doctors who are unfamiliar with diagnosing and treating concussions. Cormier suggests that anyone who is diagnosed with a concussion seek out a specialist. “General practitioners might not be certified in how to look at concussions,” Cormier said. “You need a practitioner who knows how to treat it.” Once a doctor diagnoses a driver with a concussion, the athlete must cross a number of milestones before returning to competition. For example, the protocol might include resting, then a ride on a stationary bike, then a run on a treadmill, then a run on land for 20-30 minutes, then a 50- to 60-minute workout with more intense exercises, then weights added to the exercise, and
then, following clearance by a certified specialist, a return to competition. “The biggest issue we have now is overly diagnosed concussions,” Cormier said. “A headache is a common symptom of a concussion, but we can’t forget that people have anxiety attacks, dehydration, migraines and tension headaches due to stress when they haven’t had a concussion. “When you get a concussion, once the injury has ended and you’re symptom-free, you are no more at risk of suffering another concussion. But if you return to action before you’re clear of concussion injury and the associated symptoms, you can absolutely get more concussions. We’re trying to teach people how to track the actual injuries – not the symptoms.”

ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom.
“Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

One thing you’ll notice right away is that if the can is in your shed or garage, you’ll never smell gasoline, because the vapors are locked in so tight. It does its job. It locks the vapors in and keeps the emissions from escaping into the atmosphere.”
