JEFF GORDON TO RACE AT NORTH WILKESBORO In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at what’s going down in the world of NASCAR this week, and with the return of real racing just over the horizon, there are plenty of stories coming out about the future of the sport. But before real racing returns, there’s still more virtual racing action. And this week we found out that not only will Jeff Gordon 0 0 4

be back behind the wheel of a sim rig this weekend, but he’ll be wheeling it around the legendary North Wilkesboro race track, which was recently added to the iRacing platform. NASCAR is starting to update its official rulebooks to bring it in line with social distancing guidelines, and it’s coming with a hefty fine for teams and drivers who violate it. Eric has all the details and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

UNSTOPPABLE TIMMY HILL MASTERS THE VIRTUAL MICHIGAN HILL ABSOLUTELY SCHOOLS THE PICKUP THROWDOWN FIELD If Timmy Hill’s been absolutely masterful with iRacing competition, one must wonder how much confidence that he’ll carry with him once on-track NASCAR resumes. As he likely emerges as the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series champion following the season finale at the virtual North Wilkesboro Speedway, the pride of Port Tobacco, Md. simply cannot be stopped with dominating the virtual NASCAR arena. Starting from the pole for Thursday night’s FireDisc 100, Hill prevailed in the series’ fastest race. Now, here’s the five takeaways from Round 3 of this special series! BY ROB TIONGSON 0 0 6

t was an absolutely treat to have two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch join the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series for Thursday night’s FireDisc 100 at the virtual Michigan International Speedway. While Busch started deep in the field in the 22nd spot, the 35-year-old Las Vegas native overcame early race damage to climb up to eighth by Lap 48. Looking prime to climb inside the top-five during the second half of the 100-lap race, Busch dropped outside of the top10 following his Lap 71 pit stop. Although the man known as “Rowdy” crossed the stripe in 14th, his presence in Round 3 of IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series was incredible and a nice delight not only for his fans, but NASCAR fans. Although Busch likely cannot wait for on-track NASCAR action, he’s entertained fans with his steady improvement in the tough and competitive world of iRacing. Clearly, Busch loves Truck racing!

BILICKI NEARLY NABS TOP-10 AFTER RESTART CRASH
f Josh Bilicki wanted to know how American Gladiator contestants felt when they duked it out in the 1980’s, he found out firsthand when he was involved in a Lap 24 restart pileup where he was a victim of circumstance. Still, Bilicki refused to lose and he kept himself in the fight with the competitive driver’s points standings. As the man from Menomonee Falls, Wis. tweeted after the race, “Yup this hurt my night. Guys on the outside and crashed into me. Still rebounded to finish P11, so a decent points day!” Indeed, Bilicki pulled through and he finds himself sitting just three markers from points leader Santino Ferrucci as the series turns its attention to the virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. Eventually, Bilicki will find himself in position for a PUTD win. Perhaps that moment arrives at the 1.25-mile egg-shaped speedway, the penultimate round of this series.

y all means, Jordan Anderson picked an amazing time to pick up his first top-five finish of the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series. Equally more impressive, even if Mr. Anderson isn’t superstitious, he started from 13th to place third, boosting him from 13th to fifth in the driver’s points standings, just eight points behind the points leader. Anderson was one of five drivers to lead Thursday night’s FireDisc 100 as he held the top spot for four laps. After a truly tough start in the PUTD, Anderson showcased his prowess, exercising patience while making daring moves when it was absolutely necessary. Sure, Anderson wished his last name was Hill for Round 3. However, he was more like the man known as Neo from The Matrix, which isn’t too shabby. If Anderson prevails next Thursday night at Gateway, it’d be one incredible story for the man who drives that unmistakable Chevy Silverado.

BAYLEY CURREY IMPRESSES WITH EXCELLENT EIGHTH PLACE
D
riftwood, TX was represented in incredible style with Bayley Currey’s impressive second start in the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series. As Currey and his competitors took to the equally incredible Michigan International Speedway, the 26-year-old Truck Series competitor started ninth and placed in an excellent eighth place once the checkered flag waved. While Currey fell to 13th on Lap 64, the unassuming racer kept his cool and he had one heavy foot on the gas pedal. Posting the fastest lap of the race with a time of 40.007 seconds or 179.968 miles per hour, Currey earned a solid top-10 in a race that only featured three cautions for 14 laps. With this in mind, this resulted in a smaller margin for error on the track and pit road. Currey’s one of the drivers to watch not only in this series but in the world of NASCAR with his old school demeanor.

TIMMY HILL IS THE DEAN OF IRACING
W
hile Timmy Hill didn’t do two hours of pushing broom or bought an eight by twelve four-bit room, he was indeed a man of means by no means, king of the road at virtual Michigan. Starting from the pole and leading 83 of 100 laps, Hill didn’t earn his bachelor’s degree. Instead, he acquired his Master’s in iRacing. Surely, Hill has made a compelling, strong case to on-track NASCAR owners about the prospects of driving in their quality rides. On Thursday night, his ride proved to be the best one of the competitive 29-driver field in the virtual Irish Hills. Although Hill made his first IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series start, his dominant win placed him in the 14th spot in the driver’s championship standings, just 14 points behind for the top spot. Ultimately, inquiring minds really want to know if Timmy Hill’s adorable cat drove his truck during this race.

ONE LAP TO GO
ONE LAP TO GO BY ROB TIONGSON If the caution played in Hermie Sadler’s favor, his decision to stay out until the waning moments of Thursday night’s FireDisc 100 at the virtual Michigan International Speedway would’ve been brilliant. Instead, the deciding moment of this race came from race winner Timmy Hill as he stuck to his strategy to stay in sequence when he pitted on Lap 72. Sadler, who led for four laps, relinquished the number one spot on Lap 78. With Hill back in the lead, the Marylander’s only concern was Austin Hill of Hattori Racing. Ultimately, Timmy Hill prevailed over Austin Hill by 0.429 seconds.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ Jimmie Johnson celebrates with crew chief Chad Knaus and family after a win at Indianapolis in 2012.
DRAWING EVEN WITH HIS HEROES JJ TIES MEARS, GORDON, FOYT AND UNSER FOR INDY WINS BY JA RED TURNER
T
hroughout his illustrious NASCAR Cup Series career, Jimmie Johnson has enjoyed a lot of success at a lot of tracks. One track where he has flourished — particularly over a span of several years — is fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to the world-famous Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Brickyard 400. Johnson, who grew up idolizing legendary open-wheel racer Rick Mears — a four-time winner at the iconic 2.5-mile track — matched his childhood hero with a fourth victory at IMS in July 2012. Other notable four-time winners at Indianapolis at the time were Jeff Gordon, A.J. Foyt and Al Unser. “This fourth (win), I’m able to join racing legends, my heroes, people I’ve looked up to my entire life,” Johnson said. “So to join them is a huge, huge honor.” Along with being Johnson’s fourth win at Indy over a sevenyear stretch, it was also the Hendrick Motorsports driver’s most convincing performance at the Brickyard. Driving his reliable No. 48 Chevrolet prepared by crew chief Chad Knaus, Johnson led an impressive 99 out of 160 laps and

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAY 8, 2020
took the checkered flag a whopping 4.758 seconds ahead of runner-up Kyle Busch. It was a champion-like effort by the then five-time NASCAR Cup Series champion driver. Was the car Johnson drove that day in 2012 perhaps his most dominant ever up to that point in his career? “I’ve had a few, and if memory is serving me right, most times we didn’t go to Victory Lane with them,” Johnson said “It’s just funny how that works out. You have the most dominant car, lead the most laps, and you run third or fourth, whatever it is. … “But that was running through my mind: ‘I have such a dominant car.’ You’d go from the racer’s mentality of race and win to, ‘How do I avoid messing this up?’ That’s really how the last part of the race unfolded for me.”

Throughout the 2000 season, he entered less than five events per season, having spent a great deal of time in the open-wheel Indy Car ranks with various drivers in his cars. Foyt Enterprises won IRL titles in 1996 with Scott Sharp and 1998 with Kenny Bräck. The next year, Bräck won the Indianapolis 500 for the organization. While wheeling his own rides, Foyt occasionally also entered others from the open-wheel ranks, such as drivers Johnny Rutherdord and Don Whittington in the 1970s, Ron Hutcherson in 1980, Tracey Leslie in 1989, 0 3 0
and Mike Bliss in the 1990s. From ■■ AJ Foyt poses with Mario Andretti in 2007. 2000 to 2003, Rick Mast, Dick Trickle, Ron Hornaday Jr., Stacy Compton, P.J. Jones, Mike Wallace and son Larry Foyt entered a collective 115 races resulting in eight top-five finishes. The final Cup Series event for the Cup Series team came on April 4, 2004, at Texas Motor Speedway, with Larry Foyt as driver with a 30th-place finish. Foyt expressed his appreciation for those in NASCAR during an interview for TNT’s “Pride of NASCAR” series that aired in June of 2012. “They respected me right off because I went there (to NASCAR) and tried to be one of them,” Foyt said. “If I was in trouble, I could go ask anyone and they would do anything in the world for me.”

DRIVER Q&A
REVVING HIS ENGINE JEREMY CLEMENTS IS READY TO GET BACK TO WORK BY JOSEPH WOLK IN
Racecars can’t get back on track soon enough, and Jeremy Clements is ready to go. The South Carolina native is ready to bring his No. 51 team to the front of the pack this year, determined to fight for top-10s.
■■ Jeremy Clements, driver of the No. 51 Repairables.com Chevrolet
▶ WHAT WAS THE SEASON LIKE FOR YOU BEFORE THE SHUTDOWN? “The season was frustrating so far because we’ve broken something three out of four races and are way back in points. The only race we finished with nothing bad happening was California in ninth. It’s just been random things too. We’ve had decent speed, and I know once this stuff stops happening, we’ll be able to get going and knock off more top-10s and even top-fives.” ▶ WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THE SERIES STARTS AGAIN? “I’m just looking forward to getting back to the track. Getting in the racecar and driving as hard as I can is the most fun part to me. It will be good to see everyone again. Racing is in my blood and when I haven’t had it in a while, it starts to get to me. So I’m beyond ready to go.” 0 3 2

▶ WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO THROUGHOUT THE PAST FEW WEEKS? “I’ve been at my house more than ever since this started. I’m doing anything from organizing, yard work, Xbox, taking videos and pictures for my wife, who’s a fashion blogger, lots of play time with our dog, Molly, lots of cooking on the grill and trying to stay in shape.” ▶ WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR? “My expectations would be to start finishing these races and get back up in the points where we belong. I think we’re a playoff team and have the speed to get us there. Hopefully, the gremlins are gone. We’ve been working on different packages and trying to get our engines better, too, so just can’t wait to see how we can do.”

oe Gibbs Racing has been the caretaker of car No. 18 in the NASCAR Cup Series since February 1992 when Super Bowl-winning NFL head coach Joe Gibbs made his debut as a team owner in the Daytona 500. Since then, cars fielded by Joe Gibbs Racing and carrying No. 18 have been to victory lane 75 times with three drivers – Kyle Busch (52), Bobby Labonte (21) and Dale Jarrett (2) – and claimed a trio of series championships with Busch (2015

and 2019) and Labonte (2000) behind the wheel. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 18 in the NASCAR Cup Series have posted 76 victories with 556 top-10 finishes in 1,468 starts. John Wright was the first driver to use No. 18 in a NASCAR Cup Series event. The racer from Ransomville, New York, had that number painted on his 1949 Ford when he finished seventh in the Oct. 2, 1949, event at Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It was race No. 7 of eight during the series’ inaugural season. West Coast racer Marvin Burke was the first driver to visit Victory Lane in car No. 18 when he topped the Oct. 14, 1951, race on a .625-mile dirt track at California’s Oakland Stadium. Driving Bob Phillippi’s 1950 Mercury, Burke led 156 of the 250 laps and beat runner-up Robert Caswell to the checkered flag by three laps.

COMEBACK KINGS With so much buzz in NASCAR right now centered around two veteran drivers — Matt Kenseth (now with Chip Ganassi Racing) and Ryan Newman (still with Roush Fenway Racing) — being set to return to full-time racing when the NASCAR Cup Series resumes its season at Darlington Raceway on May 17, it seems appropriate to take a look back at some other marquee drivers who’ve made big comebacks down through the years. Following are the five drivers who’ve been NASCAR’s most successful and noted “comeback kings” in the relatively recent past.

MARK MARTIN
U
nlike NASCAR’s other top comeback stories, Mark Martin’s didn’t revolve around a return from an injury. In fact, it wasn’t even a true “comeback” in the strictest sense. Yet what Martin did was pretty remarkable in its own right. Wanting to scale back a bit, the veteran driver left his full-time ride at Roush Fenway Racing at the end of 2006 for a part-time role with Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Ginn Racing over the next two seasons. While Martin had no plans to ever run the full schedule again, team owner Rick Hendrick gave him an offer he simply couldn’t refuse with the opportunity to drive the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet full time in 2009. Martin’s decision to join Hendrick bore fruit, as he earned five wins and a runner-up championship finish in his first season back as a full-timer. After two more years of full-time competition with Hendrick, Martin spent his final two seasons in part-time roles with other teams.

DALE EARNHARDT JR.
F
orced to miss two races late in 2012 after suffering two concussions over a six-week stretch, Dale Earnhardt Jr. returned for the final four events and later enjoyed a terrific, albeit winless, 2013 when he finished fifth in the standings — ultimately, his best points finish in 10 seasons with Hendrick Motorsports. He returned to Victory Lane in 2014 and got there four times, which became his highest win total in a single season for Hendrick. After a three-win 2015 campaign, Earnhardt took another sabbatical in 2016 for basically the same reason as before — concussion-like symptoms — but this sabbatical was much longer, lasting the season’s entire second half. NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver made his final comeback in 2017, the year that he announced would be his last as a fulltime driver. While Earnhardt’s final season wasn’t good from a results standpoint, the fact that he was able to return at all was significant, given his propensity for recurring concussions.

STEVE PARK
T
he majority of drivers don’t suffer a major injury during their NASCAR career. Steve Park suffered two. The first came at Atlanta in 1998 when Park’s car slammed the outside wall after an apparent mechanical failure. The car then smacked the outside wall twice more before eventually striking the inside pit wall head on. For Park, who had to be removed from his vehicle by safety personnel, the result was a broken right femur that sidelined him the rest of the season. Park returned the following season and didn’t miss another race until the two-thirds mark of the 2001 campaign. It was then, while competing in a NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Darlington, that Park suffered brain damage in a totally freakish accident that occurred under caution. Park missed the rest of the season but made another comeback beginning with the fifth race of the 2002 NASCAR Cup season. After entering every event in 2003, he made just two more career Cup starts.

fter suffering a compound fracture of his lower right leg and a mid-foot fracture of his left foot in a frightening crash during the February 2015 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona, Kyle Busch missed the following day’s Daytona 500 and was ultimately sidelined for 10 more NASCAR Cup Series points races before returning for the All-Star Race at Charlotte in mid-May. Following his return, Busch won five races — most notably, the season-ending race at Homestead where he claimed his first premier series NASCAR title over fellow Championship 4 drivers Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Jr. After the season, Busch underwent two surgeries to remove two metal plates in his left foot and a metal rod and screws in his right leg. As comeback stories go, they don’t get much better than what Busch did in 2015. “Going through the rehab and everything, it was hard. It was really, really hard,” he said. “We just kept powering through.”

ERNIE IRVAN

fter Ernie Irvan was given just a 10 percent chance of survival following a violent crash in practice at Michigan International Speedway in August 1994, many people doubted if the NASCAR Cup Series star would ever race again. Irvan, who suffered a severe head injury and was put on a ventilator and life support, defied all odds and returned to NASCAR’s top series in the fall of 1995 — albeit wearing a patch over one eye due to lingering vision issues. But it wasn’t until the summer of 1996 that Irvan’s comeback was truly complete. Driving his familiar black and red No. 28 Texaco-Havoline Ford fielded by Robert Yates Racing, Irvan ran competitively in his first full season back but needed half a season to return to Victory Lane. The big day finally came at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 14, 1996. Irvan went on to claim two more victories at the sport’s highest level before hanging up his driving helmet in 1999.

DRIVING FOR SUCCESS WOODFIN ENJOYS GETTING GANASSI RACING TO THE TRACK BY BEN WHITE
S
cott Woodfin, transporter driver for Chip Ganassi Racing and driver Kurt Busch, saw his first NASCAR race at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway in 1973 as a 6-year-old. His parents and family attended as many as 10 Cup Series races within driving distance of their Colonel Heights, Va., home. “I remember my Dad bought me a checkered flag from the souvenir stand that day,” Woodfin said. As an adult, Woodfin enjoyed a 20-year career with a transport company based in Cookeville, Tenn. When his wife’s job transferred them to Minnesota, his company didn’t have a facility there. While searching the internet in 2013, Woodfin found a job as a transporter driver for Jim Derhaag of Shakopee, Minn., a successful Trans-Am driver who transitioned to owner-crew chief. Derhagg also ran one Cup Series event in 1991 at Watkins Glen, N.Y., as a driver. In 2014, Woodfin was hired for Ganassi’s Indy Car race team. Woodfin has also worked on Ganassi’s Ford GT team as well as the organization’s Rally Cross team and Xfinity Series operation. He joined Ganassi’s Cup Series team in 2017. “Driving is really only about 10 percent of the job,” Woodfin said. “We set up the garage, get the tools box and utility carts out, set up the observation deck and have everything ready to go. When the crew arrives the next morning, we unload the car. I help push the car to technical inspection.”

FOLLEN IN LOVE WITH NASCAR BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

ammy Follen is one of the original members of the Original NASCAR Members Club. She remembers going to the NASCAR.com website in 2006 and reading about the newly formed club and the opportunities that come with it. “I had never gotten a chance to get behind the scenes in the garage, in the pits, or in Victory Lane,” Follen said. “That all sounded so appealing. I love everything about the sport -- the competition, the speed, the cars, the team work. This just gave me a chance to see it all up close.” Follen has been following it ever since -- with a particular interest in some of her favorite racers like Jeff Gordon and Kyle Petty. “I went to my first race back in 1992, and I fell in love right away,” Follen said. “My Dad used to take us camping growing up, and he’d listen to

ollowing thorough collaboration with public health officials, medical experts and state and federal officials, NASCAR has implemented a comprehensive health and safety plan. In accordance with CDC, OSHA and state and local government recommendations, nearly every aspect of how the event is conducted will be significantly modified, including: ▶▶ One-day shows; ▶▶ Mandated use of personal protective equipment throughout the event; ▶▶ Health screenings for all individuals prior to entering the facility, while inside the facility and exiting the facility; ▶▶ Social distancing protocols throughout the event; ▶▶ Strict limits on the number of individuals who are granted access into each facility ▶▶ As NASCAR works towards the execution of these events, the sanctioning body will continue to work with state and local authorities based on trends and local restrictions. ▶▶ In-race competition procedures remain largely unchanged, though NASCAR will eliminate practice for all events during this opening return slate, as well as qualifying for all events except the Coca-Cola 600.
