If Every Track is Special, None of Them are Special
I
n this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives a recap of this weekend’s Cup Series race at Martinsville, VA. With a commanding finish by Brad Keselowski, marking his second of the season, Eric talks us through the current cup standings. With six races down in the season, just two individual teams - Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske - are dominating the field. It’s looking now, at least in March, like these two teams will be the entire story. However, Stewart Haas

Racing is right behind the big two in standings, so the future isn’t completely set. But aside from this weekend’s race and the Cup series, Eric has a little advice for us in the NASCAR community. What are the fan expectations for every race, and do those expectations need to be tempered for the good of the sport? Do we need mediocre races to justify the exciting races? All that, plus we find out where Martinsville falls on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge, on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove.

Aric Almirola Is Quietly Enjoying Another Great Season
A
fter reaching the playoffs and winning a race in 2018, his first season with Stewart-Haas Racing, Aric Almirola is quietly off to a great start in 2019. Since opening the season with a crash-inflicted 32nd-place finish at Daytona, Almirola has recorded five consecutive top-10 finishes and managed to lead all but two races. One of the races Almirola didn’t lead was Sunday at Martinsville, but he still finished ninth and held onto sixth place in the standings. Understandably, confidence isn’t a problem right now for the 35-year-old Floridian. “I certainly feel like we can compete to win races on any given weekend,” Almirola said. “We showed last year in our first year together that we came oh so close to making it to the Championship 4, and we finished fifth in the points, so I would certainly say that qualifies for being in the elite group of teams and drivers.”

Brad Keselowski Might Be The New “Mr. Martinsville”
I
t took some time, but Brad Keselowski is looking more and more like the new “Mr. Martinsville”— a nickname once given to nine-time Martinsville winner Jimmie Johnson. With his victory on Sunday at the .526-mile paperclip-shaped oval, Keselowski now has two wins in the past five Martinsville races and has finished in the top five in seven of the past nine Martinsville races. The Team Penske driver earned his first grandfather clock trophy from the Virginia short track in the spring of 2017. “I feel like we probably should have won seven or eight races here, especially out of the last six,” Keselowski said after leading nearly 90 percent of Sunday’s race. “I think our team has really hit on a setup that I’m happy with. They’ve been able to put together a car that really suits my driving style, and I’ve been really able to tune that driving style in.”

Kyle Busch Continues To Impress … Across The Board
F
or the third time in 2019, Kyle Busch entered a NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race. And for the third time in as many starts, he won. Meanwhile, looking to making it three consecutive victories in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competition, Busch finished third in Sunday’s race at Martinsville where Brad Keselowski won convincingly. While the finish put a halt to Busch’s winning streak in NASCAR’s premier division, he continues to impress nonetheless. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver now has two wins, five top fives and six top 10s in the 2019 Monster Energy Series season, with the latest top five coming on Sunday at Martinsville. “I’m just thankful for (crew chief) Adam Stevens and all the guys that work so hard to give me what we need to stay up front and be there at the end,” said Busch, driver of the No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

For The First Time In 2019, Chase Elliott Flexed Some Muscle
A
fter five disappointing races to start 2019, Chase Elliott used a runner-up finish on Sunday at Martinsville to return to his frontrunning ways from the second half of 2018 when he won three times and solidified himself as the sport’s new most popular driver. Despite not being able to hang with race winner Brad Keselowski on Sunday at Martinsville, Elliott was a steady contender throughout the afternoon, and it even looked for a moment like he might be able to mount a serious charge on Keselowski in the race’s final laps. “Our NAPA Camaro was good,” said Elliott, who led 49 laps at Martinsville. “I felt like we were about as even with him as we could be. When I did get the lead, I felt like there was a little advantage to being out front and being able to work traffic your way and play off it and whatnot.”

2019 Is Shaping Up To Be Remarkable For Brad Keselowski, Team Penske
W
ith a stellar performance on Sunday at Martinsville, Brad Keselowski won for the second time this season while giving Team Penske its third triumph in the season’s first half dozen outings. Team Penske, which now has victories at Atlanta (Keselowski), Las Vegas (Joey Logano) and Martinsville (Keselowski), looks poised to challenge Joe Gibbs Racing — also a winner of three races this year — for supremacy as the 2019 campaign kicks into high gear with a compelling slate of springtime and summer events. Keselowski’s win at Martinsville on Sunday was easily the most impressive victory of 2019 so far, as he overwhelmed the field in leading 446 of 500 laps and fended off a surging Chase Elliott in the closing laps. “It was a good day,” Keselowski said. “It was a real good day. You know, I think the stats maybe look a little bit more dominant than I think it really was.”

Kevin Meendering (left) has not produced as Jimmie Johnson’s crew chief.
Jimmie Johnson Needs A Different Crew Chief By Jared Turner
J
ust call it a failed experiment. Or maybe a bad combination. Regardless of the exact verbiage used, here’s what we can categorically conclude six races into the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season: Kevin Meendering isn’t the right crew chief for Jimmie Johnson. Period. While it might be tempting to jump to Meendering’s defense on the simple premise that the season is just a half dozen races old and it often takes a driver and crew chief more time to really jell, the reality is that Johnson has shown no meaningful improvement from 2018 — his tumultuous final season with legendary crew chief Chad Knaus. Consider that Johnson’s numbers over the first six races of 2019 (two top-10 finishes, no top-fives, 15th in points) are only
0 1 8
Martinsville REARview: MARCH 25, 2019
slightly better than his numbers over the same stretch last year (one top-10, no top-fives, 17th in points). Shining a light on Johnson’s recent struggles is the fact that one of his teammates, Chase Elliott, just finished a close second at Martinsville on a day when Johnson struggled to a 24th-place finish, two laps down, at a track where he’s a nine-time winner. A little bit on Meendering for a moment … While it’s hard to question the crew chief’s credentials as a top-notch engineer, considering he once carried out his duties as a lead race engineer for Hendrick Motorsports quite successfully, Meendering didn’t win but three races over the past three seasons as Elliott Sadler’s Xfinity Series crew chief. Perhaps even more concerning is that coming into 2019, Meendering had exactly zero experience as a crew chief at NASCAR’s premier level. Believe me when I say his lack of experience shows. And also believe me when I say that Johnson — one of only three drivers to win seven championships in NASCAR’s top division — can do better for a crew chief.

How to Get Started With iRacing Esports What Do You Need to Start Your Racing Career? By M atteo M archeschi
I
Racing has become an increasingly popular platform for racing fans young and old to live their dreams and test their skills, but getting involved can be a confusing task. Between all the technical computer talk and the many options in terms of hardware, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. I’ve provided a quick guide to get racing! The first thing that prospective iRacers should take a look at is hardware. iRacing can be controlled by several type of controllers,
0 2 0

including those for Playstation 4, XBox 360, and XBox One. Some use this option, and a few have success with it, but most iRacers invest in a steering wheel and pedals.. Pretty much any modern wheel works with iRacing, including those made by Thrustmaster, Logitech, and Fanatec. There are many, many of them to choose from, but an entry-level wheel/pedal set will likely suit a new iRacer well. A few of these include the Logitech G29 or G920, and the Thrustmaster T150 or TMX.

nascar esports Fanatec sells largely higher-end wheels. iRacing’s list of wheel options can be found here. Before you make any commitments, you may also want to take a look at iRacing’s minimum system requirements. Most PCs should run it just fine, and even higher-end laptops. Those wanting to run VR or triple screens may need to make a graphics card upgrade, but one can be just as competitive running a single monitor as VR or triple screens. Once you’ve confirmed your system is ready for iRacing, you can buy a subscription. Currently, iRacing is running a 50% off deal on
new memberships, and promo codes can usually be found for new members. It can be difficult to choose which membership you want, but a shorter one can allow a “trial run” before you make a long-term commitment. It’s almost time to get racing, but before you do, it may be useful to read the iRacing Sporting Code. It will teach you everything you should know before getting into your first race. This YouTube playlist about getting started in iRacing may also be of use, and the first video is above. Congratulations, you’re all ready to race! Good luck on your iRacing journey!

msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 3 0
Martinsville REARview: MARCH 25, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty
A
0 3 2
Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich
Martinsville REARview: MARCH 25, 2019
in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

NASCAR PETS
Drivers and their furry friends By Jared Turner
J
ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom. “Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s

what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”

Coir-DrY
▶▶ World’s fastest clean up for spills! Coir-Dry is 100-percent coconut fiber and absorbs on contact, nine times more efficiently than conventional products. Coir-Dry is quick and easy to use: Identify and isolate the spill to restrict further spreading. Apply absorbent to the perimeter of the spill to form a bond and stop spill migration. Continue to apply absorbent, working to the center until the spill is completely covered and no liquid is visible. Sweep with a stiff broom, working dry material over spill area to remove all surface liquid. Coir-Dry All-Purpose Spill Absorbent can be used on all types of spills: fuels (petrol, diesel, AV gas), mineral and vegetable lubricants, cutting fluids, cooking oils, solvents, water-based chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, mild corrosives (acids and caustics), liquid organic waste, petroleum-based products, and oil and water-based paint. coirproducts.com
