NASCAR BRINGING THE CUP SERIES TO IRACING In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp talks through the biggest news stories and issues in NASCAR, and this week has been quite a doozy! We got new information about NASCAR’s track developments, and Eric talks us through his experience seeing the new developments up close over the past few months. But the biggest story this week isn’t happening at the tracks, it’s happening at 0 0 4
home! With no NASCAR races scheduled until May, the Cup Series drivers have decided to double down on the success of last weekend’s Replacements 100 and switch over to virtual competitions on iRacing. Eric has all the details on who’s participating, who has a decent shot of being competitive, and the context surrounding the esports and streaming hype. All that and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

TRACKS NASCAR SHOULD ADD TO THE CUP SERIES As a practical matter, adding multiple racetracks to the already jam-packed NASCAR Cup Series schedule would require taking away a few races and maybe even scrapping some tracks altogether. So, it’s hard to say when or if NASCAR’s top division will actually add another track, much less multiple tracks. But with NASCAR being on a two-month hiatus to help fight the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, now is a good time to dream about possible changes. Following are five tracks worthy of at least one date on the NASCAR Cup Series tour. BY JA RED TURNER

5 FLAGS SPEEDWAY
A
half-mile short track with turns banked at 15 degrees and straightaways featuring nine degrees of banking, 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida opened in May 1953 and is home to the immensely popular Snowball Derby — a Late Model Stock race held each December and traditionally featuring some of NASCAR’s biggest stars. Well-known drivers who’ve raced and won at 5 Flags over the years include the likes of Pete Hamilton, Darrell Waltrip, Donnie Allison, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones, John Hunter Nemechek and Noah Gragson. The Snowball Derby has a history of drawing many of the country’s top short-track racers along with veterans of the superspeedways and even the Indianapolis 500. The only real argument against adding 5 Flags to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule is the fact that Florida already has two Cup Series tracks — Daytona International Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway, which combine to host a total of three points-paying races each season.

ELDORA SPEEDWAY
H
ome to the most popular race on the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series schedule, Eldora Speedway boasts a rich history of racing that goes all the way back to 1954 when legendary track promoter Earl Baltes built the half-mile dirt racing facility in western Ohio. In 2004, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart purchased Eldora from Baltes, and under Stewart’s leadership, the track has only flourished. Today, Eldora plays host to some of the biggest dirt racing events in the country, including the Dirt Late Model Dream, Kings Royal, the World 100, and the annual truck race held each summer. Together, these events attract over 20,000 spectators each year. Ever since Eldora hosted its inaugural truck race in 2013, the idea of adding Eldora to the NASCAR Cup Series tour has been a topic of major conversation among fans who would like to see NASCAR’s premier division include a dirt track as part of its schedule.

ROCKINGHAM SPEEDWAY
O
ne of the most popular stops on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule for many decades, Rockingham Speedway — aka “The Rock” — was dropped from the schedule after the 2004 season as NASCAR’s top division continued its ongoing push toward bigger markets. Rockingham made a brief return to the NASCAR scene in 2012 and 2013, hosting a truck race in both seasons. But beginning in 2014 and continuing into 2020, the high-banked 1.017-mile track has sat eerily silent, with nothing but the ghosts of past races left to fill the empty space. While it’s in all reality quite unlikely that Rockingham will ever host another NASCAR national series event of any kind, many old-school fans in particular dream of a day when “The Rock” makes a triumphant return. And it’s a pretty safe bet that some drivers — especially veterans of the sport — would jump at the opportunity to race here again.

CANADIAN TIRE MOTORSPORT PARK
A
fixture of the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series schedule since 2013, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park would be a terrific addition to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule if for other reason than the simple fact that it would give NASCAR’s premier division another road course — which fans these days seem to want. Of even greater significance, having the Bowmanville, Ontario-based track on the Cup schedule would allow NASCAR’s top division to expand beyond the borders of the United States into Canada and help the sport draw an even bigger international audience. Canadian Tire Motorsport Park has played host to some of the world’s most prominent racing series, including the American Le Mans Series, the CASCAR Super Series, Can-Am, Formula 1, INDYCAR, Tudor United SportsCar and USAC Champ Car, among others, through the years The 2.459-mile road course opened in 1961 as “Mosport Park” and had its named changed from Mosport International Raceway to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in February 2012.

IOWA SPEEDWAY
A
staple of the NASCAR Xfinity Series since 2009, Iowa Speedway began hosting a pair of annual Xfinity Series races in 2011 and has continued that tradition in every season since. The .875-mile short track also plays host to a NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race each season. Designed by legendary driver and NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace and owned by NASCAR, Iowa Speedway is in many ways the quintessential short track. Iowa has produced some terrific Xfinity and truck races over the years and has long been discussed as a great possible addition to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule. Perhaps the biggest benefit to a Cup race here is the simple fact that all three of the Cup Series’ short tracks are based in the Southeast, so adding Iowa to the mix would give NASCAR’s premier series a much-needed short track in the Midwest — the heartland of America and an area where NASCAR continues to seek to expand its fanbase.

JOHNSON’S 2006 DAYTONA 500 WIN WAS CHALLENGING BY JA RED TURNER
J
immie Johnson has earned 83 victories in NASCAR’s premier series, placing him tied for sixth on the NASCAR Cup Series’ all-time time wins list. None of Johnson’s wins have been as big as the two he captured in the Daytona 500 — a race he won for the first time in 2006 and then repeated as champion of in 2013. Johnson’s first triumph in The Great American Race couldn’t have come under any more challenging circumstances, as it happened with interim crew chief Darian Grubb atop the No. 48 team’s pit box while crew chief Chad Knaus served a suspension for a major rules infraction discovered earlier during Speedweeks. Johnson refused to be denied, however, leading 24 of 203 laps in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet on the way to winning the 500 in just his fifth try. “I just have so much pride in my race team, what we have accomplished today with the circumstances we’ve been through,” Johnson said during his post-race press conference. “This is a well-

prepared team, a team that was very hungry and wanted to make a statement today. We stepped up and got the job done today, and I’m very proud of my guys.” Seven years and five championships later, Johnson joined the elite club of two-time Daytona 500 winners when he again prevailed in the season opener at The World Center of Racing. Only this time, he did so with Knaus in his rightful place. “When those guys were able to come down here and win the Daytona 500 in 2006 in my absence, I think that really solidified the strength of the 48 car,” Knaus said. “Was I here? No. Was I here in spirit? Most definitely. I couldn’t have been prouder of the group of guys we had there. To finally be able to come down here and win and be a part of this is definitely a huge dream come true.”

Todd Gilliland
BY ROB TIONGSON
Throughout the NASCAR season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series racer Todd Gilliland.
■■ Todd Gilliland drives the No. 38 Ford in the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.
▶ WHILE YOU’RE IN YOUR THIRD SEASON IN THE TRUCK SERIES, IT’S YOUR FIRST WITH FRONT ROW MOTORSPORTS. “It’s been a lot of fun. There’s a lot of new faces and a lot of old ones that reunited with some of my guys from the K&N Series with the alliance through DGR-Crosley. Having Bob Jenkins as my car owner, growing up around him and Front Row Motorsports through my dad (David), I’m just looking to make FRM into the really competitive team that they are on the Cup side.” ▶ WHAT WAS YOUR “WELCOME TO NASCAR” MOMENT? “I think my first laps at Daytona in the Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports – it was insane! I used to watch every race at Daytona. Just to be able to go around there and see the tons of grandstands and how high they are – it’s just an incredible experience.” ▶ CAN YOU NAME A TIME WHEN AUTOCORRECT MESSED UP A TEXT TO SOMEONE RESULTING IN A HILARIOUS MOMENT? “I don’t think I’ve ever done that, but normally I try to not text too many people. I’m pretty good friends with Christian Eckes and Harrison Burton. Those are the two guys that I’ve raced against that I text the most and we have pretty conversations. One time, I was trying to text Ty Gibbs, but I texted Tyler Gibbs, one of the head guys with Toyota. I texted him something super informal, like, ‘Do you wanna go eat or something?’ And I was like, ‘Oh man, I’m sorry, that was kind of awkward.’ But hey, it happens sometimes.”

THE LUCK OF LUZA WILLIAMS ESPORTS COMPETITOR PARLAYS CLEVER PIT STRATEGY FOR WIN AT HOMESTEAD BY ROB TIONGSON
■■ Ryan Luza won the nNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing event at the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway on Tuesday.
A
s live NASCAR action awaits its return in May, the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series captured the attention of race fans with Tuesday night’s race at the virtual HomesteadMiami Speedway. While the field of 40 racers prepared for the 134-lap challenge, one driver tweeted how his thumb was blistered after turning nearly 1,000 laps. Proving that practice makes perfect, Ryan Luza of Williams Esports raced with absolute vigor in his No. 53 Ford Mustang. Starting third, Luza hovered inside the top-five throughout the race when a caution for Nathan Lyon’s No. 6 Ford Mustang resulted in a caution on lap 64. Luza, who stayed out while the leaders were cycling through their first pit stop of the evening, took advantage of precious track position. Consequently, Luza led the field on the lap 69

restart before another caution for a Turn 2 spin involving Caine Cook. Opting for fresh rubber for the finish, Luza and select race leaders pitted on lap 73. Starting outside of the top-five, Luza charged his way to the front following the lap 76 restart, dropping the hammer to catch race leader Bobby Zalenski in the No. 83 Chevy Camaro. Marching through the field, Luza re-entered the top-five after 88 laps before challenging Zalenski for the lead with 32 to go. Not to be outdone at Homestead, Luza cleared Zalenski for the top spot on lap 105, and in the words of Howard Cossell and Chris Berman, Luza appeared as if “he could go all the way.” Despite a frustrating round at Fontana, Luza and his No. 53 Williams Esports team were relentless towards the final stretch, emerging triumphant over Logan Clampitt, Keegan Leahy, Garrett Lowe, Chris Shearburn, Jimmy Mullins, Matt Bussa, Zalenski, Jeremy Allen, and Ashton Crowder. Snapping a winless streak that dated 343 days, Luza was elated with his first win of
2020 and his second overall at the virtual HomesteadMiami Speedway. Jubilant and stoked, Luza tweeted, “Was ready for my first @ NASCAR @iRacing @CocaCola Series race winning interview in awhile! Absolutely stellar @WilliamsEsports Mustang tonight, awesome to put them in victory lane! Chequered flag. Thanks to everyone at FSR for the hard work!” Meanwhile, Stewart Haas Esports’ evening at HomesteadMiami Speedway was a tale of two races. Justin Bolton and his No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang started 14th while Dylan Duval and his No. 41 Haas Automation Ford Mustang rolled off 24th in the starting grid. Bolton would drive into the top-10 on lap 28 while Duval ran as high as eighth on lap 95. However, Bolton contended with damage from a restart that relegated him to finish 17th. On the other hand, Duval cited some strategy from his team to nab a 15th-place finish. “We had a really good Mobil 1/HAAS Automation Ford Mustang tonight,” Duval said. “Even though we didn’t qualify well, my spotter called
an aggressive race, which helped us leap frog through the field. Overall, great rebound for us tonight and I’m looking forward to Bristol in a few weeks.” While the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series awaits Round 4 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Tuesday, March 31st, Ben Kennedy, vice president, racing development of NASCAR, announced the introduction of the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series. Slated to kick off on Sunday, March 22nd at 1:30 pm ET at the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway, fans can expect drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Larson, and Christopher Bell to wage memorable virtual track battles. “Until we have cars back on track, the entire NASCAR community has aligned to provide our passionate fans with a unique, fun and competitive experience on race day,” Kennedy said. “Our long-time partners at iRacing offer an incredible product and we are excited to see how many of our best drivers will stack up in the virtual domain of competitive racing.” Certainly, as the nation and world cope and persevere through this global crisis, the world of virtual stock car racing via iRacing looks to offer incredible action in the coming weeks as on-track racers and sim racing drivers are prime to entertain fans in grand fashion. 0 2 5

Team Penske’s Austin Cindric made his way into Victory Lane in 2019. This time around, expectations are even higher. The No. 22 Ford is one of the XFINITY Series’ championship favorites in 2020, and for good reasons.
▶ WHAT IS IT LIKE KNOWING YOU’RE A CHAMPIONSHIP FAVORITE THIS YEAR? “Any driver, especially at this level, wants to be competing for wins on a week to week basis, because in NASCAR that’s what you have to do to be a champion. I feel very lucky to be at that point in my career with a great team that has believed in me for the last couple of years.” ▶ WHAT CAN YOU DO TO EXCEL ON THE TRACK? “I feel as though in racing, possibly even more so than many other professional sports, preparation is key to having an advantage against your competition. Not only because practice is so limited, but there are so many changing variables and the ‘game’ changes week to week with different tracks. For that reason, I dedicate nearly all of my time during the week towards doing so.” ▶ HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE GROWN AS A DRIVER SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED RACING FULL-TIME IN THE SERIES? “I feel as though anyone who has been a fan of the XFINITY Series for the last couple of years, has watched me, race by race, learn how to drive, and most importantly, race this style of car. My experience in this style of racing, was extremely limited heading into my first year in the series in 2018, and almost none to start my season in the Truck Series in 2017.”

ichard Childress, the founder of RCR Enterprises, built his championship racing empire in 1969 from one lone Chevrolet Camaro and a huge amount of determination to succeed. Employees past and present of the Welcome, N.C.-based organization can be proud of their 228 wins and 13 NASCAR championships in the NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series, Gander Outdoor Truck Series, and Menards ARCA Series. It all began with one particular dark blue 1947 Plymouth raced at the famed Bowman Gray Stadium in their $99 claiming division. Childress paid him $20 for the former taxi cab, welded in roll bars, and bought an airplane seat belt at the local Army-Navy store to race it on the quartermile track. “Becoming a Cup driver in NASCAR was always my dream,” Childress said. “When I was working at Bowman Gray selling concessions, that was what I wanted to do. In 1969 when I ran a Grand American race and drove around the Talladega track, that’s when I was sure I wanted to become a full-time racer.” The Grand American event to which Childress referred was his big

break. On Sept. 14, 1969, a boycott was staged by the Cup series drivers at Talladega Superspeedway prompted by tire issues. Childress was given a spot in the field with his Grand American car, a companion event to the premier series that weekend. His top-10 winnings paid for his first race shop. Even though he didn’t win as a Cup driver, he collected six top-five finishes and 76 top 10s in 285 starts with a career best fifthplace finish in NASCAR premier series standings in 1975. “For the amount of funding we had when I was a driver, I think we did pretty well,” Childress said. “I would have maybe two or three paid crew members and I would pick up guys to help us in the pits. I’ve wondered sometimes how well we could have done had I really had the money to race with in those days.” After starting 20 Winston Cup races in 1981, Childress elected to step away from the driver’s seat and handed the driving duties over to 1980 Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt. By 1986, the first championship was in the bag, followed by five more through 1994. Earnhardt won 67 of his 76 career Cup victories in Childress’ famed No. 3 Chevrolets. Sadly, their incredible success story
came to an end with Earnhardt’s death during the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. After a tremendous amount of soul searching, Childress elected to continue racing as Earnhardt had expressed should tragedy arise. Since 2001, RCR has collected 37 Cup victories including the 2018 Daytona 500 with Austin Dillion, Childress’ grandson, behind the wheel. “I made it as a driver and as a team owner because of a lot of great people and great sponsors around me,” Childress said. “I’ve said many times that only in America could a kid with a $20 race car be here 50 years later and still be involved in racing.”

ailGater Tire Table founders Ward and Patti Graham have never had a problem with unplugging from society. There is nothing they love more than getting out in nature – away from the everyday hustle and bustle of society. “My husband and I always wanted to get away in a four-wheel drive vehicle and get to places other people don’t go to,” Patti Graham said. “We never wanted to do a lot of camping around other people.” That is still a possibility for Graham and other NASCAR

fans. The CDC recommends avoiding congregating in large crowds in accordance with social distancing, in response to the spread of the coronavirus. Those recommendations do not restrict some of the most intense passions of NASCAR fans, such as RV touring, overlanding, tailgating (in small crowds) and exploring the country. “We think people will be retreating and going on camping trips,” Graham said. “We have to get away from public crowds, and a lot of people are outdoor enthusiasts. Kids don’t have to go to school, they’re stuck in the house. Get out with them to explore nature.” Graham’s product, the TailGater Tire Table, is a nice travel companion on excursions with the family. The table is a durable, steel, compact travel table that uses a vehicle’s tire as its main support and is stable regardless of the ground conditions. It has a retractable leg for extra support, no tools required and installs in seconds. “If you’re getting claustrophobic in the house, our product gives you an opportunity to get outside and share meals with the family,” Graham said.

to keep the country safe, RVs are a great way to distance you and your family while still traveling to all of the NASCAR races.” IT’S INEXPENSIVE. “Using an RV for your own lodging, transportation and kitchen significantly lowers your chances of both coming in contact with COVID-19 and infecting anyone else. You’ll also be able to enjoy other attractions in between locations. You can check out the breathtaking views of the Great Smokey Mountains on your way from Charlotte to Kansas or stop in to see the incomparable Redwoods on your way to Sonoma.”

SOLITUDE. “With proper respect given to the practice of social distancing, RV communities will thrive during this time. People observing this period of remote working or learning can also reap the benefits of traveling. While mass transportation, stationary lodging and public eateries are shutting down or facing significant restrictions because of higher risks of infection, the solitude of your own mobile space is the only way to safely travel during this outbreak.”

CREW MEMBER PROFILE
PART OF THE PLAN WHITE PUTS QUALITY FIRST AT ECR BY BEN WHITE
A
aron White, quality engineer with ECR Engines of RCR Enterprises, saw his first NASCAR race at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., in the spring of 1995. “I was pretty small,” White said. “I wasn’t quite 4 years old at the time, but I remember being there. It was the Saturday Busch Series race in those days. My parents were there with me as part of a group of people from our church.” As a young child into his teens, White took things apart to see what made them tick. He eventually moved to street cars, often adding his own designs to his engines and interiors. Having followed the sport through family connections, White began his career at RCR building and maintaining show cars in the summers of 2009 and 2010 while studying for his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at UNC Charlotte. Upon graduation in 2014, he joined ECR Engines in their state-of-the-art lab. Today, he works as a quality engineer performing inspections and failure analysis critical to engine assemblies. “The way it all started was I wanted to drive race cars early on, but the money to field a team just wasn’t there,” White said. “So through encouragement from my Mom and Dad, I felt getting my engineering degree was the best opportunity to get into racing.” Now in his sixth year with ECR, White works with various departments within the organization to help ensure there are no component failures. That includes the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series races RCR enters as well as other teams ECR supplies engines to.

J
oe Gibbs Racing has been the caretaker of No. 20 since 1999 when the organization added a second NASCAR Cup Series entry for open-wheel racing sensation Tony Stewart. Stewart had claimed USAC Silver Crown and sprint car championships in cars owned by Glen Niebel and carrying the No. 20, so it was a perfect combination. During his 10 seasons with JGR, Stewart won 33 times and claimed two series championships (2002 and 2005).
Since Stewart’s departure from JGR to become a team owner, Matt Kenseth (15), Joey Logano (2) and Erik Jones (2), the current driver of car No. 20 car, have continued the number’s winning legacy. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No.20 in the NASCAR Cup Series have been to Victory Lane 53 times and have recorded 475 top-10 finishes in more than 1,205 starts. Dick Linder was the first driver to use No. 20 in a NASCAR Cup Series race. The doors of his 1949 Kaiser carried No. 20 in the fourth series event on Sept. 11, 1949, at Pennsylvania’s legendary Langhorne Speedway. Marvin Panch is the only driver outside of the JGR roster to win a series race in car No. 20. That victory came on the sport’s biggest stage when Panch won the 1961 Daytona 500 while driving a 1960 Pontiac owned and by prepared by Smokey Yunick. ■■ 2020 – Erik Jones at Daytona (Getty Images photo)
