LOGANO GETS REVENGE AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the racing action this weekend, and there sure was plenty of racing to talk about. There were a total of four races this weekend at HomesteadMiami - two Xfinity races, a Truck series race, and the Dixie Vodka 400 Cup Race main event - and Eric has his analysis on all of it. The downside to all of this racing action was the unpredictable Florida weather, and this time 0 0 4
of year it tends to rain almost every day there. But even with this setback, all of the races this weekend eventually went off, and Eric has his review of everything including the TV stations scrambling to fill time during the delays. How are the standings looking after such a busy weekend of racing? And where did this new Summer night race at Miami land on the patented Groovy Gauge? Watch the episode and find out!

LESSONS LEARNED AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI HAMLIN CRUISES TO THIRD WIN OF 2020 With a dominant victory in Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Denny Hamlin became the first three-time winner of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. In a race where typical frontrunners such as Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Alex Bowman struggled, Hamlin had his No. 11 Toyota in the proverbial groove as he cruised to a .895-second win over Chase Elliott. Here are five takeaways from the weekend, which also included two NASCAR Xfinity Series races and a NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race. BY JA RED TURNER

SATURDAY’S XFINITY SERIES RACE MIGHT HAVE BEEN DALE JR.’S FINAL ACT
D
ale Earnhardt Jr. has been retired from full-time competition since the final race of the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series season. But Earnhardt owns his own NASCAR Xfinity Series team — JR Motorsports — for which he has made at least one cameo Xfinity start in every season since 2007. Earnhardt has continued the tradition even in retirement, having logged a single Xfinity start in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Earnhardt’s only scheduled outing of 2020 came on Saturday at Homestead, where he led four laps and finished fifth but later made it known that this might have been the final act of his post-retirement encore. “I don’t know how many more of these I’ll do,” said Earnhardt, who will soon begin his third season as an announcer for NASCAR on NBC. “This might be the last one. … It’s getting to the point where I’ve got to decide whether I’m helping things or I’m not helping the team and can I help the team in other ways.”

HOMESTEAD PERFORMANCE CAPPED PERFECT WEEKEND FOR AUSTIN DILLON
A
s great weekends go, they don’t get any better than the one Austin Dillon just enjoyed. Early on Sunday morning, Dillon and his wife, Whitney, welcomed their first child into the world with the birth of their son, Ace. The timing of Ace’s arrival couldn’t have been better, as it allowed Austin to be present for the birth, which took place in North Carolina, and make it to Homestead-Miami Speedway in South Florida in time for Sunday evening’s NASCAR Cup Series race. Although undoubtedly tired from the day’s events, Austin finished sixth in the race — an impressive run regardless of the circumstances but especially considering how crazy his morning had been. “What a day!” Austin wrote on Instagram after posting his fourth top-10 finish of the season. “Another top 10 finish and the birth of my son! Proud of the fight in our 3 team. We continue to grind and keep the momentum going in the right direction.”

THE JOEY LOGANO-CHASE ELLIOTT FEUD RAGES ON
emember the final laps at Bristol on May 31 when Chase Elliott and Joey Logano tangled? Clearly, neither driver has forgotten. In what appeared to be a deliberate move to hold up race leader Elliott with 30 laps left on Sunday at Homestead, Logano fought Elliott tooth and nail when Elliott attempted to put Logano’s Ford a second lap down. Elliott’s struggle to pass Logano’s lapped car allowed second-place Denny Hamlin to catch Elliott and blow by on the outside to take the lead — a position that Hamlin never relinquished the rest of the way. After finishing runner-up to Hamlin, Elliott was tight-lipped when asked about Logano’s impact on the outcome. “I just need to get through lapped traffic better,” Elliott said. Earlier in the day, however, Elliott was more vocal when asked to name someone whose voice he doesn’t want to hear. “Probably Joey Logano,” Elliott said. “I don’t really want to hear his voice at all, to be honest with you.”

THE ROOKIES ARE REALLY COMING INTO THEIR OWN
O
ne of the most impressive performances from Sunday’s race in South Florida came from NASCAR Cup Series rookie and back-to-back/reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Tyler Reddick, who scored a Cup career-best fourth-place finish in his No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Four spots behind Reddick, in eighth, was another rookie — Leavine Family Racing’s Christopher Bell, who was one of Reddick’s fiercest challengers for the Xfinity Series championship the past two seasons. While it seemed to take them a few races to acclimate to life in NASCAR’s premier series, both Reddick and Bell now appear to be well on their way to finding their footing at the Cup level despite their relative youth and inexperience compared to most of the field. At this rate, it may not be long before one or both of them end up in Victory Lane for the first time. After all, as Xfinity Series drivers the past two years, both of them won and won often.

DENNY HAMLIN DROVE WITH A CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER
A
nyone who has seen the Twitter feeds of Denny Hamlin and Corey LaJoie over the past couple of weeks might have noticed an ongoing spat between the two. After LaJoie suggested he could outrun Hamlin and other elite drivers if given similarly topperforming equipment, Hamlin took umbrage with the notion, tweeting this to LaJoie on June 7: “Real pressure begins when you have all that and still don’t win.. it ain’t all about having a fast car buddy.” After Sunday’s race — a race where he won all three stages and led 137 of 267 laps — Hamlin admitted that all the banter with LaJoie had served as added incentive. “I’m motivated more than ever,” Hamlin said. “Like I said to my crew chief, no matter what is said on social media, he’s always going to get the best out of me. Sometimes — sometimes — like MJ (Michael Jordan) said, ‘You find a way to motivate yourself.’ Certainly, there was a little extra motivation.”

JUST SAYIN’ ▶
GOOD RIDDANCE, CONFEDERATE FLAG
A big kudos to NASCAR for its decision last week to ban the Confederate flag from all NASCAR tracks beginning with the midweek race at Martinsville Speedway. This symbol of hate and oppression has no place at any sporting event anytime anywhere, and this decision was both correct and long overdue. Anyone who takes issue with NASCAR’s new stance on the flag should really check their heart. If they can’t put their personal desires aside for the greater good of the sport — and an entire race of people — NASCAR doesn’t need them anyway. JA RED TURNER ▶ DON’T MAKE DRIVERS CELEBRATE ALONE IN VICTORY LANE ANY LONGER I’m all for common-sense safety precautions, but can someone please help me understand why it’s necessary for the winner of every NASCAR Cup Series race these days to celebrate all by himself in Victory Lane — while wearing a mask, no less? I understand what NASCAR is trying to do here and that it’s important to keep everyone as safe as possible, but from a practical standpoint, this requirement makes no sense. Team members work closely together during and before the race. So why not be able to celebrate with their driver in Victory Lane? And if they can’t, at least let the driver get his picture taken without a mask on.
■■ NASCAR will no longer allow Confederate flags at its events.

▶ OPEN THE DOORS AND LET THE FANS IN, PLEASE On Sunday — for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic became a thing — fans were allowed in the stands for a NASCAR event. Unfortunately, it wasn’t nearly enough of them. While allowing up to 1,000 fans entry into Sunday’s race at Homestead was a great first step, NASCAR needs to continue to loosen restrictions on how many people can attend. Thankfully, 5,000 fans will be permitted in the stands for this Sunday’s race at Talladega, but even that isn’t nearly enough, when you consider Dega’s seating capacity.

LIGHTNING WAS ON THE CLOCK IN MIAMI This week, popular YouTuber and streamer Rusty Walrus is back outside in his car for another fast reaction to last night’s race, or should I say this weekend’s racing, as there was a packed weekend of multiple races from multiple series, all at Homestead-Miami. This race was unique in that it became a summer night race after multiple delays due to lightning in the area. a Chase Elliott win. Elliot’s battle with Denny Hamlin did provide some quality racing action, but the hype was subdued after his third win of the season (as opposed to another for Chase Elliott). But that’s not all. Rusty also takes us through the truck series race and the two Xfinity races that took place this weekend. How did they stack up with the new schedule in Miami? Ross Chastain BY ROB TIONGSON
During the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Ross Chastain, NASCAR XFINITY Series racer. ▶ YOU’RE OFF TO A TERRIFIC START AS YOU’RE FIFTH IN THE POINTS STANDINGS. HOW ENCOURAGED ARE YOU WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE NO. 10 KAULIG RACING TEAM HEADING INTO THE SUMMER STRETCH OF THE SEASON? It’s crazy to think that our best finish is third because we’ve had potential to win a few races which is all I could ask for. The cars that Kaulig is bringing to the track with the 10 and 11, and even the 16, which we saw at Atlanta with AJ Allmendinger getting the win, we came from humble beginnings from Daytona with AJ and I missing the race. Our true downforce package at all the other tracks, everything besides superspeedways, have been good. At some point in the weekend, we’ve shown speed to win. To know that we’ve got the full season, coronavirus and everything else that could be thrown at us – we knew the whole time that we were running every race as long as NASCAR held the races. That gave me a lot of confidence throughout the pandemic. I was able to really focus on mentally preparing. ▶ AS YOU ARE AN EXPERT ON THIS SUBJECT MANNER, HOW CAN ONE PICK OUT A GREAT WATERMELON WHEN GROCERY SHOPPING? It’s simple. If you want one good watermelon, go ahead and buy three and you’ll probably get a good one! Honestly, when you look in the bin and you pick one up, it should be heavy for its size, and it should feel heavy as it’s 92 percent water. The stripes should all be symmetrical, and the pattern should look even and the bottom should be yellow, not white.
