NASCAR and IndyCar Doubleheader in 2021? In the latest episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp walks us through all of the top stories and burning issues in the NASCAR community. This week has been especially filled with trending topics, and Eric goes through each point by point. First up, Eric takes a look at this week’s upcoming Truck series race at Texas Motorspeedway, featuring the return of fan favorite driver Greg Biffle. He’ll be suiting up to drive a Toyota, this time for Kyle Busch’s team. But that isn’t all the big news for the truck 0 0 4

series. Ross Chastain, a favorite among fans of all of NASCAR’s series, announced this week that he’ll be switching his points from the Xfinity series over to trucks. Eric talks us through the context of what this decision means, both for the Truck series as a whole, and for Chastain’s career moving forward. It’s not all Truck series news, though, this was a jam packed week of stories. Eric also talks about the TV ratings from Pocono, Kyle Busch’s controversial comments on the state of the IndyCar circuit, and so much more. You’ll have to watch the episode to see it all!

However, that victory nor the organization’s 2019 dominance is a guarantee of success on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway — a track that Fords and Chevrolets have ruled in recent years. The Fight For Track Position
A
lthough Michigan’s wide racing surface offers ample room for passing, cars tend to get strung out around the fast 2-mile layout, which happens to be one of the most aero-sensitive venues on the Monster Energy Series schedule. As a result, there are few if any tracks where staying at or near the front is more pivotal to a strong outcome. “At the end of the day, Michigan is all about track position,” said crew chief Mike Bugarewicz, who guided Clint Bowyer to Victory Lane here one year ago. “If you lose that track position, it’s a fight to try and get back up there. You look at the restarts, they are brutal. Those guys are four-wide, gouging, trying to get every spot they can. If you’re going to gain spots, that’s where you’re going to gain the majority of them. Throughout the fuel run, you might gain one or two. Keeping the track position, I think, is key all day long.”

A Possible Break In Joe Gibbs Racing’s Dominance
W
ith Kyle Busch’s win Sunday at Pocono Raceway, Joe Gibbs Racing drivers have now prevailed in nine of the season’s 14 races to date. If recent track history means anything, however, JGR will be hard-pressed to continue its winning ways this weekend at Michigan International Speedway. The last time a JGR driver conquered MIS was August 2015 when nowretired Matt Kenseth went to Victory Lane. To find the next most recent JGR winner at Michigan, you have to go all the way back to 2011, when JGR teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch swept the two Michigan races, respectively. “Ever since the repave (in 2012), we just haven’t found what we were looking for there,” Busch said. “We just try to figure out what we can continue to do to evolve and get better there. It’s just a track that we have to go to and do the best we can.”

The Impact Of The 2019 Aero Package
F
ans who dig ultra-fast speeds tend to love races at Michigan, a multi-groove, high-banked 2-mile track where speeds are prone to top 200 mph. Lap times could be especially swift this weekend, which will mark the series’ first trip to Michigan since moving to the high-downforce 2019 aero package. “I think it’s going to look somewhat like Kansas,” said driver Alex Bowman, referring to the race held at Kansas Speedway in early May. “I think Kansas and Michigan are the two tracks that complement this package the most. I don’t know what the weather is going to be like, but if it’s cool, you’re going to be able to run wide open pretty much the whole race. I think it’s going to be a really good race for the fans. If there was a place where this package was going to give a desired effect and the closest racing, it’s going to be those two racetracks.”

The Battle For Manufacturer Bragging Rights
E
very time NASCAR’s premier series visits Michigan International Speedway, one of the biggest storylines is which of the sport’s three manufacturers will ultimately leave town with bragging rights. The manufacturer rivalry is heightened by the racetrack’s close proximity to both Detroit, Michigan (the headquarters of Chevrolet parent company General Motors) and Dearborn, Michigan (the headquarters of Ford). NASCAR’s third automaker, Toyota, is based in Japan. It’s not surprising, therefore, that a Ford or Chevy driver has won each of the last six and 13 of the past 14 races at MIS. If there’s any track where Ford doesn’t want to lose to Chevy, and vice versa, and where neither American automaker wants to lose to a Toyota, it’s MIS. “It’s a really big weekend for Chevrolet, us racing in their backyard,” said Bubba Wallace, driver of the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet. “You always go to Michigan thinking about the manufacturer.”

A Stewart-Haas Racing Breakthrough
O
ne of the biggest surprises of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season is the fact that Stewart-Haas Racing is winless in the first 14 races. There’s perhaps no place where the drought is more likely to end, however, than Michigan International Speedway — where SHR drivers swept last year’s races as Clint Bowyer won a rain-shortened June event and Kevin Harvick went to Victory Lane in August. Both Harvick and Bowyer, along with fellow teammates Aric Almirola and Daniel Suarez, should factor heavily into the mix at MIS. While Harvick might be the odds-on favorite after leading 108 of 200 laps and taking the checkered flag more than 3.2 seconds ahead of his closest competitor last August, no one is more optimistic about Sunday than Bowyer. After all, Bowyer’s victory at MIS one year ago this weekend was his most recent. “Last year was fun, so let’s do it again,” he said.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch has been borderline unstoppable this season, picking up a Monster Energy Series-high four wins including one last weekend at Pocono Raceway. However, Busch has just one win in 28 starts at Michigan — a track where he hasn’t had a lot of speed especially since the 2012 repave. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. No one wants to win at Michigan International Speedway more than Brad Keselowski, a native of Rochester Hills, Michigan located about an hour-and-a-half away. But despite being one of NASCAR’s best drivers of the past decade, Keselowski is a surprising 0-for-19 at MIS. The good news? He finished second in his most recent visit to his home track. ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Still searching for his maiden victory of the Monster Energy Series season, Kevin Harvick returns to Michigan as the most recent winner at the 2-mile track. That in itself might be enough of a confidence booster to propel the 2014 series champion to Victory Lane for the first time in 2019. ▶▶ Kyle Larson. Prior to last June’s race at MIS, Kyle Larson had reeled off three consecutive victories at the track located in Michigan’s Irish Hills. Although the struggle has been real for Larson this season, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver showed his true capabilities with a come-from-behind win in the recent All-Star Race. ▶▶ Joey logano. Joey Logano owns a pair of Michigan wins, the first coming in August 2013 and the most recent coming in June 2016. Both of Logano’s victories here have been with Team Penske, the organization that has been a distant but clear-cut second to Joe Gibbs Racing this season in terms of performance.

O
n Aug. 17, 1975, Buddy Baker, driver of the No. 15 Bud Moore Engineering Ford, edged Richard Petty’s No. 43 Petty Enterprises Dodge to win the 1975 Talladega 500. It was Baker’s second consecutive victory on the 2.55-mile Alabama track, having bested David Pearson for the victory four months earlier in the Winston 500 on May 4. Baker was the class of the 50-car field, leading a total of 93 laps. The Charlotte, N.C., native sealed the deal by passing Petty a final time on lap 177 of the 188-lap event to record his second of four wins that season. On the final lap, Petty tried a slingshot

move for the victory coming off the fourth turn, but Baker was able to hold him off by less than a car length. While in the press box for post-race interviews, Baker was physically distraught when informed that close friend Dewayne “Tiny” Lund had passed away as a result of backstretch crash during the sixth lap. All told, Baker collected two additional wins at the track in Moore’s Ford in 1976 and Harry Ranier’s Oldsmobile in 1980. “I like Daytona with its speed, but I love Talladega because it’s longer, banked more, faster and more fun to drive,” Baker said in a May 6, 1990 article published by the Daily Press of Newport News, Va.. “It’s like home to me.”

The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

t’s been quite some time since Dale Earnhardt Jr. last competed in a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race. But now, the most popular driver in NASCAR history is relishing in life away from the track, having opportunities he never thought he would get.
▶▶ Life is so different for you now. How is your time different now between being at home with your wife and daughter, along with your time at NBC? “We do the back half of the year, so while FOX is working, we can take a little time to spend with our families. I love that. You have to choose what’s important. Me and my wife discuss everything. We decide what we want to do and how we want to do it. She’s part of that decision.” ▶▶ On top of that, NBC is sending you all over, like with the Kentucky Derby a few weeks ago? “Yeah, I’ve never been to the Kentucky Derby. Going there and experiencing that was really

cool. NBC sent me all over, so I got to see the entire complex. Usually, if you go to the Kentucky Derby, you plop yourself into a suite and hang out. That was so cool, just getting the whole tour of the place on the biggest day of the year for that facility. It was exciting. And Rutledge is a ton of fun.” ▶▶ Are you satisfied with the post-driving life? “I am and I love it. I miss driving, of course, and that’s great. I have my little girl, Isla, and Amy is amazing. I have the time to go experience new things, like the Derby, the Indy 500 and the Olympics. I get to do all of this stuff for the first time. I never had time on my hands to do this. Just having the racing over your head makes you a completely different person. When you’re a competitor, you’re always in that mode, even when you’re trying to vacation. You still have that competitive switch happening.” ▶▶ What do you miss about racing? “The camaraderie, the friendships, the guys, working together.”

With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

NASCAR PETS
Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
