Eric also talks us through the details on how it will all play out, including the Busch Clash now being a night race and running on the road course. Plus, Eric gives us the rundown on Tony Stewart’s return to the NASCAR truck later this summer on July 4. Find out all of that and more on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

While Kevin Harvick comes into the weekend as a heavy favorite due to being the all-time wins leader at Phoenix, others have been stronger out of the gate in 2020. So it’s anyone’s guess, really, who will have the upper hand when the green flag waves on Sunday afternoon in the Sonoran Desert. Following are five things to watch for. by Jared Turner

A Cautiously Confident Kevin Harvick
N
o driver’s record at Phoenix Raceway even remote compares to that of Kevin Harvick, who leads all drivers past and present with an incredible nine victories here. The most recent of those wins came in the spring of 2018 but Harvick won five of six races at the 1-mile track from the fall of 2012 to the spring of 2015. Needless to say, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver is considered a heavy favorite every time NASCAR’s top series visits the Valley of the Sun. While this weekend is no exception to that rule, Harvick doesn’t consider himself to have a huge edge over his competition. “I feel like that can be gone at any point,” he said. “That’s the hardest thing about having success. You have to have an open mind to try new things to keep moving forward. If you don’t have an open mind or are not willing to try a fresh approach, then it will get stagnant.”

A Preview of the Championship 4 Race
T
his year, for the first time, the NASCAR Cup Series’ season will conclude at Phoenix, where four drivers — known as the Championship 4 — will race straight up for the title. While it’s impossible to know yet who those four drivers will be, this weekend will provide a nice preview of the season finale since it’s very likely that drivers who perform well on Sunday will do the same when NASCAR returns in the fall. This is the first year since NASCAR’s premier series moved to a playoff format in 2004 that the season will end at a track besides Homestead-Miami Speedway. Phoenix, which features equally balmy weather in the fall, was previously next-to-last on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar. Look for some teams — especially those who’ve already won a race this season and punched a ticket into the playoffs — to be in somewhat of a test mode this weekend as they prepare for a possible return as part of the Championship 4.

A Continuation of the Hendrick Motorsports Resurgence
A
fter winning just four times in 2019, Hendrick Motorsports came into 2020 with tempered expectations. But so far, Team Hendrick has been as strong as anyone. That was particularly obvious last weekend at Auto Club Speedway, where Alex Bowman led over half of the race on the way to a commanding victory. Bowman also challenged for the win the previous weekend in Las Vegas. “We can really fine tune the car throughout practice instead of having to make huge changes,” Bowman said. “It’s really been our probably best couple practices the last two years that I’ve been driving for HMS, and I just attribute that to the hard work in the shop and great work over the off-season.” Teammate Jimmie Johnson — the seven-time champion who has struggled mightily the last two seasons — was as competitive at Fontana as he’s been in quite some time. If Hendrick can build on the success of the past two weekends, the sky is the limit.

The Debut of a New Aero Package
T
his weekend marks the debut of a new reduced-downforce aero package designed to enhance competition this season on the NASCAR Cup Series’ road courses and shorter oval tracks. The amended aero rules, unveiled by NASCAR in mid-January, include a significantly smaller spoiler, splitters and other aerodynamic devices aimed to place a greater emphasis on handling and driver input with less stabilizing downforce. The changes will be in effect for nine of 24 layouts — six oval tracks and all three road courses — that NASCAR’s top division will visit during the 2020 season. Phoenix is the fourth race of the season but the first featuring the new aero package. The other ovals where the new aero package will be used are Richmond Raceway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Martinsville Speedway, Dover International Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway. The three road courses are Sonoma Raceway, Watkins Glen International and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

A Joe Gibbs Racing Rebound
S
ince opening the season with a win in the Daytona 500, Joe Gibbs Racing has failed to impress over the past two weekends. That could change this weekend at Phoenix, however, where the organization owned and founded by three-time Super Bowl-winning coach and NASCAR Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs has gone to Victory Lane four times in the last five races. Facing a must-win situation to qualify for the Championship 4, JGR’s Denny Hamlin drove to victory at Phoenix last fall ahead of teammate Kyle Busch, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick. Martin Truex Jr. and JGR teammate Erik Jones finished sixth and seventh, respectively, giving JGR four cars in the top seven. Entering the weekend, JGR is on a three-race winning streak at Phoenix dating back to Busch’s victory in November 2018. Based on how JGR has performed in recent visits to Phoenix, this weekend represents a golden opportunity for a JGR rebound. “The last couple of times we’ve been to Phoenix, we’ve run pretty good,” said Busch, who has finished either first or second in his last four trips here. “Hopefully, that can translate to this time around again.”

Ranking Jimmie Johnson’s 7 Championships
presented by
by Jared turner
Set to retire at the conclusion of the season, Jimmie Johnson will hang up his helmet as one of the most successful NASCAR drivers of all time. Here’s how we rank his seven NASCAR Cup Series championships.
2007
Of Johnson’s championship seasons, 2007 has by far been his most dominant. Johnson recorded a career-high 10 wins in a single season and rolled to a second consecutive championship. For all practical matters, Johnson put the title on ice by scoring four consecutive wins leading up to the season finale at HomesteadMiami Speedway, where Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon arrived as the only driver with a mathematical chance – albeit a small one – of unseating Johnson for the title.
2008
Thirty years after the legendary Cale Yarborough became the first driver to win three consecutive championships at NASCAR’s top level, Johnson became the second. On the strength of a seven-win season that he finished with a healthy points advantage over his closest pursuers – Roush Fenway Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle – Johnson forever solidified his place as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.
0 2 0
Phoenix Preview: Mar. 6, 2020
2009
Having tied Yarborough’s record for consecutive championships, Johnson began 2009 on a mission to break it. Mission accomplished. Johnson notched an impressive seven wins for the second year in a row, and the only real threat to his pursuit of history proved to be first-year Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin, who Johnson ultimately crushed in the final points tally.
2006
After two fifth- and two second-place points finishes over the course of his first four seasons, Johnson reached the sport’s pinnacle in his fifth try and at the age of 31. Under the guidance of crew chief Chad Knaus, Johnson went to Victory Lane five times and took the championship by a fairly comfortable margin over Matt Kenseth, who was seeking his second title with Roush Fenway Racing.
2016
2013
After engaging in a season-long battle for supremacy with Matt Kenseth, Johnson came into the final race with a sizeable lead over Kenseth in the standings and then took care of business by finishing ninth at Homestead. Kenseth finished second in the race, but it wasn’t enough to overcome his steep deficit to Johnson, who returned to NASCAR’s Promised Land after coming up short the two previous years.
This has been Johnson’s only championship in the era of an elimination-style playoff and season-ending Championship 4 race. While 2016 wasn’t Johnson’s most impressive season by a longshot, the Hendrick Motorsports driver saved his best for last after running behind his three championship foes for most of the finale. Johnson grabbed the lead for the first time with three laps to go and held on to win the race and tie Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt as the only seven-time champions of NASCAR’s premier series.
2010
Johnson entered the final race at Homestead trailing Denny Hamlin in the standings but left South Florida as a five-time champion by virtue of finishing second on a day when Hamlin stumbled his way to a 14th-place result. Johnson made history for the second year in a row, this time becoming the first driver to win five consecutive titles in NASCAR’s premier series. 0 2 1

ony Stewart will compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race July 4 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a Ford Mustang from Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR). The three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and 2020 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee will headline the inaugural Xfinity Series event on Indianapolis’ 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course, with the 62-lap race serving as Stewart’s 28th overall start at the Brickyard but his first in the Xfinity Series. Stewart has competed in 18 Brickyard 400s, five Indianapolis 500s and four IROC Series races. Stewart is a twotime Brickyard 400 winner (2005 and 2007) and a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame. “Everyone knows what Indy means to me, so I can’t think of a better place to race on Fourth of July weekend,” said Stewart, who grew up 45 minutes from Indianapolis in the towns of Columbus and Rushville, Indiana. “It’s going to be cool making history by turning left and right in a stock car at the Brickyard, and the racing will be

full of action and contact. Any time you can drive any racecar at the speedway is special, and you know I’m going for the win. The date is already circled on my calendar.” The road course at Indianapolis has hosted INDYCAR, Formula One, sports cars and even MotoGP, but never NASCAR. And while Stewart is no stranger to Indianapolis, be it in open-wheel Indy cars or full-bodied stock cars, he has never driven the road course in any type of racecar. But Stewart has proven to be prolific when turning left and right. He has eight road-course wins in the NASCAR Cup Series, including his 49th and final career victory in 2016 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway. Stewart is second to only Jeff Gordon for the most road-course wins in the NASCAR Cup Series with a tally that includes Sonoma in 2001, 2005 and 2016 and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Garrett Smithley by Rob Tiongson
Throughout the NASCAR season Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with NASCAR Cup Series racer Garrett Smithley.
■■ NASCAR Cup Series racer Garrett Smithley
▶▶ Considering your journey in racing, what’s been your “Welcome to NASCAR” moment? “I can’t tell you that I’ve had a ‘Welcome to NASCAR’ moment. The one that kinda stands out to me first was when a fan recognized me at Martinsville. I wasn’t even racing for the weekend and a fan recognized me out of my firesuit back in 2016. “That was kind of the first ‘wow’ moment. It’s still weird to me when people ask me for my autograph because I just feel like normal Garrett. It’s cool especially around the Cup Series. A lot more people are recognizing me in the garage and getting recognized out different places.” ▶▶ I know you’re close with Ross Chastain. Which drivers would you say you’ve gotten along with the most and could say you’ve leaned on or hung out with to shoot the breeze with? “Yeah, I mean, obviously Ross. We’ve been close for a long time. We were teammates for four years. And still, to this day, we’re friends because I can text him and ask him for some advice on how to get around Martinsville as I’ve never raced there before. “When Ryan Ellis was racing, obviously he’s now gone to the PR side, we were really, really good friends. Harrison Rhodes, when he was here, we were good friends. Quin Houff is another friend. Also, Stephen Leicht and I go play golf a lot. “So, really, it’s been my teammates, but I’m not one of those drivers that goes out of my way to befriend other drivers. Not that I dislike anybody. It’s just that they are my competition and I want to beat them.” 0 2 4

Exploring a Brand New World Small Living his Dream with JGR by Ben white
J
ames Small, crew chief for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Martin Truex Jr., saw his first NASCAR race as a small child when the Cup Series went to Australia for an exhibition there in 1988. “I was 5 years old at the time and remember standing with my Mom behind the backstretch in a hospitality tent,” James said. “My Dad was down in the pits working. I grew up following NASCAR and wanted come and live overseas. America had always enticed me. I wanted to work in NASCAR.” His Dad, Les Small, a successful team manager and mechanic on the Australian touring car circuit, worked with driver Allen Grice in NASCAR events at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1987 and 1989. James raced in go-kart, BMX, Formula Ford and Super V8 competition before the reality of low funding set in, prompting a move to the United States to work at RCR Enterprises as a race engineer in 2013. He joined Furniture Row Racing in 2016 and quickly established himself as a strong asset to the team. When former crew chief Cole Pearn left JGR to spend time with his family at the end of 2019, James was the obvious choice to replace him. “I really like working with the driver and the team,” James said. “I love the aspect of it and digging into the simulation and try to optimize the car. I think that’s been one of our strengths at the 78 team (FRR) and 19 (JGR) team over the past four or five years.”
Martin is the best guy I’ve ever worked with. He’s really low stress. He tells me exactly what he needs and he leaves me alone. He doesn’t muddy the waters with opinions about engineering. That’s the best thing about Martin. That makes our lives a lot easier. - James Small 0 3 2

hen Tony Stewart joined forces with Gene Haas and formed Stewart-Haas Racing prior to the 2009 NASCAR Cup Series season, Stewart wanted his car to carry No. 14 as a nod to his racing hero, A.J. Foyt. Stewart made the final 252 starts of his NASCAR Hall of Fame career in the No. 14 SHR car, recording 16 of his 49 series victories. When Stewart retired from NASCAR competition following the 2016 season, he handpicked Clint Bowyer as his replacement.
■■ 2019 – Clint Bowyer (Getty Images photo)
Statistics show that cars carrying No. 14 in the NASCAR Cup Series have been to Victory Lane 44 times and have logged 418 top-10 finishes in nearly 1,240 starts. Bob Flock was the first to use No. 14 when he drove Raymond Parks’ Ford to a 22ndplace finish in the July 10, 1949, race on the beach/road course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Flock’s brother, Fonty, was the first to win with No. 14 when he dominated the April 15, 1951, visit to Occoneechee Speedway, a onemile dirt track in Hillsboro, North Carolina. In addition to Stewart (16) and Fonty Flock (14), the list of drivers who have won in car No. 14 includes Hershel McGriff (4), Jim Paschal (7), Bobby Allison (1) and Bowyer (2). It’s interesting that Foyt never won a NASCAR race in car No. 14 despite making numerous starts between 1983 and 1992. ■■ 2009 – Tony Stewart and A.J. Foyt (Ron McQueeney photo via NASCAR)

The Rise & Fall of Morgan-McClure Motorsports YouTuber Danny B is back this week with another installment of his long running series, The Rise & Fall, a historical documentary series covering the up and down drama of NASCAR and motorsports team. three decades in the sport, usually running their iconic Kodak No. 4. Danny B takes a look back at who they were, and what became of the team that had once been a mainstay in the eighties, nineties, and early 2000’s. So what made them such an iconic team in NASCAR, and what ultimately led to losing their competitive position on the track over the years? Danny B covers it all in the latest edition of Rise & Fall.

▶▶ What challenges have you experienced thus far? “I had to work a good bit with the pace of the race because they’re very long. It’s more of a challenge for the first couple of weeks as the team and I get on the same page with the cars. We need to get our communication down pat and then, we can start fine tuning some things. We’ll started knocking down solid finishes.” ▶▶ What are some goals that you’ve set for this year? “I’m a driver who likes to take things week-by-week. I’ve never been full-time since I was 18 years old. My motto was to seize all of the opportunities of a given week. I never knew when I would be back behind the wheel. I’m going to keep that mentality and keep realistic expectations every week depending on the track. If we do that each week, we’ll have good results by the end of the year.”

ew motorsports icons have accomplished the success enjoyed by team owner Jack Roush that came through a tireless dedication toward winning races and championships. Born in Covington, Ky., in 1942, Roush completed his mathematics degree with a minor in physics from Berea College in 1964 before moving to Detroit to work for Ford Motor Company. He went on to earn his Master’s in scientific mathematics from Eastern Michigan University in 1970. Many of today’s NASCAR fans may not realize the former high school physics teacher joined friend and early business partner Wayne Gapp in 1970 and won championships in NHRA, IHRA and AHRA drag racing competition. In 1976, he formed Jack Roush Performance Engineering and provided race engines to many prominent race teams in various forms of auto racing through the early 1980s. His tenure was rewarding in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)

and International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) road racing series. Roush’s teams went on to claim 24 national championships and titles in the two series, including 12 manufacturer’s championships, winning 119 races, while working with iconic drivers such as Tommy Kendall, Scott Pruett and Willy T. Ribbs. Roush also collected 10 consecutive sedan-class championships at the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona at Daytona International Speedway. Upon making NASCAR’s premier series his home in 1988, Roush needed an aggressive driver and chose fellow NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Mark Martin to join his organization. Martin went to victory lane on 83 occasions collectively within all of NASCAR’s top national series from 1988-2005. Thirtyfive of those victories came with Roush in the Cup Series. Roush has been witness to his NASCAR teams winning 325 races across NASCAR’s three national series. Overall, his organization has logged five NASCAR national series
■■ 2019 NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee owner championships, while his Jack Roush drivers have won an additional three driver championships. Roush and highly respected engine-builder Doug Yates formed Roush Yates Engines in 2005. The engine shop based out of Mooresville, N.C., supplies Ford power for Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports and several other teams in the Cup Series, XFINITY, Truck and ARCA Series. In 2007, Roush partnered with major sports investor John W. Henry. The organization’s name was changed to Roush Fenway Racing with Roush heading the day-to-day operations of RFR. Roush has won eight championships across NASCAR’s three premier series. A Gander Outdoors Truck Series title was won by Greg Biffle in 2000 as well as an Xfinity Series championship in 2002. Cup Series titles came with Matt Kenseth in 2003 and Kurt Busch in 2004, followed by an Xfinity Series title for Chris Buescher in 2005 and another with Carl Edwards in 2007. Ricky Stenhouse logged back to back Xfinity Series titles in 2011 and 2012.
