Interview with No. 18’s Harrison Burton This week, Eric Estepp brings us a special episode of Out of the Groove, featuring an interview with driver of the No. 18 in the Truck Series, Harrison Burton. Harrison, 18, has been racing since the age of 2; a fitting start, as his father is none other than the Mayor, former NASCAR driver Jeff Burton. Eric and Harrison’s conversation touches on his relationship with his famous father, and how much involvement he has in his son’s career as a racer. Eric covers a lot more ground in this candid interview with Burton, including what it’s like to drive for such a prolific and bombastic driver 0 0 4

like Kyle Busch. How does he handle that kind of pressure when his boss is so accomplished? Their discussion also looks into Harrison’s future in the sport, now that Joe Gibbs Racing has tapped Harrison for a number of Xfinity races this season. What kinds of opportunities are available to Harrison, and what are his current prospects? But that’s not all. Eric is also running a contest in his comment section of the video, in partnership with LEER truck covers and NASCAR Pole Position. Viewers have a chance to win diecasts and more. ith back-to-back weekends of racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway now in the proverbial rearview mirror, Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers and teams are primed for the heart of the summer stretch. Up first: a trip north to Pocono Raceway, which features arguably the most unique layout in NASCAR’s premier division. Here are five things to watch for in Sunday’s Pocono 400. By Jared Turner

A Real Possibility Of A Fresh Face In Victory Lane
P
rior to finishing seventh in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Alex Bowman had ripped off three consecutive second-place finishes and appeared poised for a breakthrough victory in the very near future. Will that breakthrough come in Sunday’s race at Pocono? While Bowman might be winless in 130 premier series starts, no driver has been consistently faster over the past month than the second-year driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Others searching for their first premier series victory and who could strike gold at Pocono include Bowman’s teammate, William Byron, and first-year Stewart-Haas Racing driver Daniel Suarez. Byron, a former Xfinity Series champion now in his second season with Hendrick, won the pole for last weekend’s 600-miler and finished ninth. Suarez, who like Byron is a former Xfinity Series champ, started on the pole, led 29 laps and finished second last August at Pocono while competing for Joe Gibbs Racing.

The Impact Of A Last-Minute Rules Change
B
eyond the baseline components of the Monster Energy Series’ 2019 aerodynamic package are a smaller tapered spacer (.922 inches versus 1.17 inches) and aerodynamic ducts, both of which are being used at oval tracks larger than one mile. The smaller spacer further limits airflow through the engine and, thereby, restricts horsepower to a figure around 550, down from 750. The aero ducts transfer air to the side of the car and away from the front tires, creating tighter racing. Originally, five races at oval tracks larger than a mile were supposed to feature the smaller tapered spacer but not the aero ducts. However, in early May, NASCAR announced a change in plans, adding aero ducts for the four remaining races — including both Pocono races — where only the smaller tapered spacer was originally going to be used. How this change will affect the racing at Pocono is one of the biggest questions heading into the weekend.

Generalized “Tricky”-ness
P
ocono Raceway’s familiar nickname — “The Tricky Triangle” — is much more than just a catchy moniker. Rather, it’s an indicator of the reality that drivers face each time they take on the fast 2.5-mile Pennsylvania track notably featuring three distinct turns but no fourth turn. Pocono’s trickiness stems in large part from each turn being banked at a different degree, which makes it virtually impossible to set up a car that will handle well in all three corners. Another challenge is the steep drop-off in speed from the end of the front straightaway to Turn 1. At the end of the long frontstretch, drivers hit speeds approaching 200 miles per hour. But to make it through the first turn without wrecking, drivers must be hard on brakes, reducing their speed up to 60 or 70 mph. So drastic is the speed reduction that some drivers elect to downshift — a practice generally reserved for road courses.

A Battle Of Joe Gibbs Racing Teammates
T
ogether, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. have won six of the season’s 13 points races, with each driver going to Victory Lane three times and Truex earning all of his wins in the past five points events. Only Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski — also a three-time winner this season — has enjoyed as many post-race celebrations as Busch and Truex. When it comes to Pocono, however, Busch and Truex are the clear and heavy favorites by virtue of both their seasons to date and their history of strong performances at Pocono. Busch, for his part, has won two of the last three races held on the Pennsylvania hardtop. Truex, meanwhile, is the defending race winner of the June Pocono event and also picked up a victory here in June 2015. While neither Busch nor Truex is a lock to prevail on Sunday, they’re each a good bet for the Vegas bookies and oddsmakers.

A Potential Non-JGR/Team Penske Race Winner
T
welve of 13 races in the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season have been won by a Joe Gibbs Racing or Team Penske driver. Will Sunday’s race in the Pocono Mountains buck the trend? History certainly suggests it’s possible, if not likely. Ten of the last 13 races held at the 2.5-mile track have been won by drivers competing for other organizations. That stat is a little bit misleading, however. That’s because one of the non-JGR winners over that stretch was Martin Truex Jr., who is now in his first season with JGR. While competing for Furniture Row Racing, Truex prevailed at Pocono in June 2015 and June 2018. Likewise, Ryan Blaney — now with Team Penske — won at Pocono in June 2017 as part of Wood Brothers. Nevertheless, Sunday at least presumably presents one of the best opportunities of the season for a non-JGR or non-Team Penske driver to go to Victory Lane.

drivers to watch at Pocono
By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle Busch. It took Kyle Busch 26 tries to finally master Pocono Raceway. But when he did, he completely nailed it. Winless in his first 25 starts at “The Tricky Triangle,” Busch has won two of the past three races at Pocono — including last August’s race. Sandwiched in between those wins is a third-place finish last June. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. A winner of two of the last four June Pocono races, Martin Truex Jr. returns with an air of confidence stemming from not only his recent Pocono success but also the speed he’s carried in recent weeks. Truex, who joined Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2019 season after five years at Furniture Row Racing, has prevailed in three of the past five races. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. The only three-time 2019 winner who isn’t part of Joe Gibbs Racing, Brad Keselowski has been tremendous at times this year but somewhat plagued by inconsistency. He’s a former winner at Pocono, having triumphed here in memorable fashion in 2011 just days after breaking his left ankle when he crashed head-on into a wall during a test. ▶▶ kevin harvick. Kevin Harvick has won at every track on the Monster Energy Series schedule except for three. Two of them — Kentucky Speedway and the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL — are places where he’s raced a combined total of nine times. The third track is Pocono, where he’s competed 36 times. Is this weekend his time? ▶▶ alex bowman. One of the hottest drivers in the series and one of the most pleasant surprises of the past month, Alex Bowman looks to finally score the victory that has narrowly eluded him multiple times in recent weeks. Pocono, where he finished third last August, is a place where he can get it done.

An Inch at a Time Labonte Wins at Martinsville in 2002 By Ben white
O
n April 14, 2002, Bobby Labonte, driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Pontiac, led a total of 62 laps to collect his lone victory of the season coming in the Virginia 500 at Martinsville Speedway. After starting from the 15th position, the Corpus Christi, Texas, native held steady in the top-10 while working with crew chief Jimmy Makar to get the car to handle well. Labonte passed JGR teammate Tony Stewart on lap 445 of 500 laps on the half-mile short track for the lead and recorded his 16th of 18-career victories.

Labonte also had to survive 14 caution periods that slowed the field for 104 laps or 20 percent of the race distance. In the end, Labonte also held off a spirited late-race challenge from Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 Roush-Fenway Racing Ford. It was the first short track victory on his Cup series career. “I think it was a combination of the car and the driver getting a little better,” Labonte told FOX Sports in victory lane. “Tony Stewart is always good on short tracks so I’m able to feed off of him. It’s just wonderful. I won a Busch Series (now Xfinity Series) race but never ran good in a Cup car here. We’ve been inching on it so thank goodness this little Pontiac did well today.”

In January 2017, it was announced Kraus would run the full NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule for legendary West Coast car owner Bill McAnally, He won a race, claimed a pole, finished third in points and was named rookie of the year. He won four West Series races a year ago, but finished a disappointing fourth in the standings. This season, Kraus is chasing the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West title and has been impressive in select NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East starts.

erek Kraus, a 17-year-old racer from Stratford, Wisconsin, is focused on adding the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship to his rĂŠsumĂŠ before taking the next step in his career. Born into a racing family on Sept. 1, 2001, Kraus was a student of the sport from a very young age as his father, Mark, raced Late Models on the legendary short tracks of central Wisconsin. Derek Kraus started racing go-karts at age 8 and was a champion by 12. He did some Bandolero racing, but quickly transitioned to full-size vehicles. Kraus became the youngest feature winner in the American Ethanol SuperTruck Series at age 13. Two years later, he did the same in the ARCA Midwest Tour, breaking a 25-year-old record set by Matt Kenseth, who would go on to earn a NASCAR Cup Series title.

sraeli racer Alon Day is eager to return to America. The two-time Whelen Euro Series champion is just three wins away from becoming the series’ all-time wins leader. But he still wants to run in NASCAR’s premier division.
▶▶ How has the start of your season been thus far? “So far, so good. I started the first race in Velencia, and they changed the bumpers and other stuff in the suspensions for this year, so we have more options. They also changed the tire manufacturers, so it’s General Tires now. It’s changed everything in terms of setup and preparation. We struggled a lot, and I was very concerned after the first race that we might not be able to fight for the championship. But when we came to Italy, I won two races. I’m confused.” ▶▶ You’re going for three straight championships in a row. What would it mean for you to do the unthinkable? “Obviously, the goal is to win a championship. I won two championships and I know the record is three. The all-time wins is 22, which is three wins away. After two championships, I feel like I need some kind of a new goal. My goal is to be the greatest, most successful driver in the Euro Series. That’s all I can do right now. I want to win three championships in a row and grab the all-time wins record. That would be more amazing for me because I’m pretty sure no one will achieve it after me.”

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about
his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”
The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
