RAIN, WRECKS, AND DEJA VU AT POCONO In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis of all this weekend’s racing action at Pocono. This was a historic event for NASCAR, with this being the first year of the Pocono double header weekend. Two Cup races, Trucks, and Xfinity all battled it out this weekend, despite mother nature’s best efforts to throw it off. Pocono can be a controversial track among the fanbase, with a record of hit-or0 0 4
miss performance when it comes to on track product. And this weekend presented extra challenges, as NASCAR is still operating with pandemic precautions, and that means no practices, qualifying, or even much time at the shop before the race. So how did the historic weekend play out? What did the back to back days of racing do to the on track product? And where does it all fall on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? Watch the episode and find out!

LESSONS LEARNED AT POCONO HAMLIN, HARVICK THE CLASS OF THE FIELD It’s been a wild, crazy, exciting and downright unpredictable 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, and the madness continued over the weekend at Pocono Raceway with two action-packed days of racing highlighted by a NASCAR Cup Series doubleheader that was the first of its kind in NASCAR’s modern era. In the end, Kevin Harvick (Saturday) and Denny Hamlin (Sunday) were victorious, as the two veteran drivers both went to Victory Lane and in doing so continued their impressive seasons to date. Following are five important takeaways from a race weekend to remember: BY JA RED TURNER

ARIC ALMIROLA HAS QUIETLY TURNED A CORNER
A
ric Almirola might not be one of the more outspoken or flamboyant drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series, but no one has made bigger strides recently than the driver of the No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford. Consider this: 11 races into the 2020 season, Almirola had nary a top-five finish. But in the last four races, Almirola has four top-five finishes. Meanwhile, he’s jumped from 14th to ninth in the standings. Understandably, Almirola couldn’t have been any more pleased after posting finishes of third and fifth, respectively, in the Pocono doubleheader. “Another top five,” he said on Sunday. “I’m so proud of Buga (crew chief Mike Bugarewicz) and all the guys on this No. 10 team. That’s four top-fives in a row. What a weekend we had here in Pocono, got a lot of stage points and finished third yesterday and fifth today. We’re riding a wave of momentum, and I’m just so happy and thankful for all of our partners.”

POCONO DOUBLEHEADER EARNED A PASSING GRADE
T
his past weekend — for the first time in forever — NASCAR’s premier division staged a doubleheader at the same track on the same weekend. Keep in mind, however, that the decision to have a race on back-to-back days at Pocono wasn’t part of the 2020 schedule realignment resulting from the coronavirus; rather, this decision was made in 2019 and designed to be an experiment of sorts. If successful, many folks believed NASCAR might try more doubleheader weekends in the future. While gauging the success of this first Pocono double is challenging based on the simple fact that fans weren’t allowed to attend, the drivers and TV personnel involved in the proceedings all seemed to be in support of the concept. This being so, and given NASCAR’s plan to run the full 36-race schedule, it’s certainly possible that NASCAR will attempt another doubleheader weekend — this next one being previously unscheduled — at Michigan or Dover, or both, before the year is out.

KYLE BUSCH STILL HAS THE BLUES
I
f anyone had reason for optimism coming into the Pocono doubleheader weekend, it was Kyle Busch. Along with being the defending winner of the June race at the “Tricky Triangle,” Busch had gone to Victory Lane in three of the past five Pocono events. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver also had no lack of motivation, considering his absence from Victory Lane in 2020. Pocono proved to be anything but a cure for Busch’s blues, however. Instead of ending his drought, Busch finished fifth on Saturday and 38th on Sunday. The latter outcome was the result of a bump from Ryan Blaney as the two drivers ran up on a slower lapped car. The contact sent Busch’s Toyota into the wall and out of the race. Afterward, Busch was visibly aggravated. “It’s just very frustrating and unfortunate,” he said. “I know what happened, but it doesn’t make any sense to talk about it. It will just come across in a bad way.”

DENNY HAMLIN IS HAVING A DREAM SEASON
O
ther than perhaps Kevin Harvick, no one had a more enjoyable weekend in the Pocono Mountains than Denny Hamlin. After finishing second to Harvick in Saturday’s first race of the weekend doubleheader, Hamlin took the win on Sunday — his sixth at Pocono — with Harvick claiming runner-up honors. With the victory, Hamlin is now in a tie with Jeff Gordon for most victories all-time at the Pennsylvania track. Hamlin also now owns a NASCAR Cup Seriesleading four wins in 2020 and continues to stake a claim as the favorite to ultimately capture the title come November. “We’ve just been on a run here lately,” Hamlin said of his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team led by crew chief Chris Gabehart. “Our cars have been really good. Chris has been doing a phenomenal job on his side of things. I feel like I’ve been doing okay on my side. Anytime you have something like that happen, you’re going to have great success.”

oming into the Pocono weekend, the 2.5-mile triangular-shaped track known as the “Tricky Triangle” was one of only three active NASCAR Cup Series tracks where Kevin Harvick had never won a race. Now there are only two such places. Exorcising his demons from past Pocono disappointments, Harvick scored a convincing victory in Saturday’s 130-lapper at the Pennsylvania facility where he had been winless in 38 attempts. Harvick then backed up that performance with a second-place finish on Sunday, rounding out a weekend that couldn’t have gone much better for the driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford. “Pocono has definitely been a place that we’ve lost some wins and could have been to Victory Lane several times,” Harvick said after leading the final 17 laps of Saturday’s race. “Just a matter of this or that happening. Today was just like the last seven years here: run well, been in contention to win. The only difference today is we ended up on top.”

JUST SAYIN’ ▶
KYLE BUSCH COULD STAND A LESSON IN POSITIVITY
Kyle Busch made it clear from his comments at Pocono that he does not support the decision NASCAR has made to eliminate practices from race weekends since the sport returned in mid-May. While it’s possible that the dearth of practices works more to the detriment of Busch than some others, I have a suggestion for the reigning Cup champion: Get over it. The reality is that NASCAR is doing the very best it can right now to make this sport work, with COVID-19 cases on the rise nationwide. The best thing Busch and all the drivers can do is stay positive and support NASCAR for soldering on in the face of tough circumstances. JA RED TURNER ▶ KUDOS TO KEVIN HARVICK FOR PUTTING CELEBRATIONS ON HOLD After winning on Saturday at Pocono, Kevin Harvick didn’t celebrate with a burnout or victory lap or by waving the checkered flag. He simply got out of his car, did his obligatory post-race winner’s interview and headed straight for Victory Lane — where he “celebrated” all alone, per the current rules that prohibit team members from joining in. Later, during his post-race press conference, Harvick said he wouldn’t be doing any more celebrations unless fans were at the track. I say good for him. It’s bad enough that a driver has to be alone in Victory Lane. So why celebrate twice in total solitude?
■■ Kyle Busch is being unrealistic when he complains about a lack of practice time.

▶ THIS RAIN REALLY IS FOR THE BIRDS First, NASCAR deserves applause for not throwing in the towel prematurely and calling Sunday’s race official before the scheduled distance was completed. It turned out that drivers were able run the race in its entirety — albeit barely — before impending darkness moved in. Of course, none of this would have been a concern if rain had not once again wreaked havoc on the proceedings of a race weekend. While scouring Twitter on Sunday evening, one thing was abundantly evident: Virtually everyone in the sport has some serious rain fatigue right now.

Garrett Lowe BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Garrett Lowe, a driver in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. ▶ THIS SEASON, YOU’RE REPRESENTING THE WOOD BROTHERS RACING TEAM IN THE ENASCAR COCA-COLA IRACING SERIES. HOW SPECIAL IS IT TO DRIVE FOR THIS LEGENDARY STOCK CAR TEAM’S VIRTUAL RACING EFFORTS? It is very special for me to be representing Wood Brothers Racing in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. Driving for this legendary team with an iconic car number is the most unique and exciting opportunity of my sim racing career. The transition to the team this year has been flawless and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. ▶ HOW BENEFICIAL HAS IT BEEN TO HAVE YOUR ONTRACK RACING BACKGROUND WITH SIM RACING, PARTICULARLY WITH IRACING? Having a sim-racing background in my real-world racing efforts has been a tremendous help through my career thus far. Utilizing iRacing as a platform before stepping into a real car was a huge benefit to me as a driver. My race craft was years ahead of my experience when I first began racing Bandoleros in the summer of 2016. From learning new tracks to learning to drive a Legend Car, iRacing has been a tool I consistently find myself leaning on to improve as a competitor. ▶ IF YOU COULD ASSEMBLE YOUR DREAM RACING TEAM, WHICH DRIVERS WOULD YOU RECRUIT AS YOUR TEAMMATES? If I could assemble my dream racing team, I would have to recruit Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Jon Wood. ▶ IF YOU HOSTED A VIRTUAL APPRECIATION DAY FOR YOUR FANS, WHAT BANDS WOULD YOU INVITE TO PERFORM FOR A CONCERT? If I was able to host a virtual appreciation day for my fans and supporters, I would have to invite Luke Combs and Jason Aldean to the online concert.

THESEWALLSYRUM REMINDED ABOUT A WONDERFUL anniversary for NASCAR fans and moviegoers. Indeed, Days of Thunder raced its way into movie theatres across the world. From there, fans learned about Darlington’s “treacherous turns,” how to not treat your rental car, illustrating the art of drafting with sweeteners and that Yondu Udonta was Cole Trickle’s constant thorn on his side. In all seriousness, while most remember “Harry, this guy’s going down,” the best line is “Let me out of the car, Cole!”

Should qualifying not return in the near future, Morgan Shepherd may shut down his team
THIS WOULD BE MOST UNFORTUNATE IF THIS HOLDS TRUE. THE PANDEMIC HAS IMPACTED every industry in every walk of life. One of the NASCAR teams feeling the effects of it is Morgan Shepherd’s No. 89 XFINTY Series efforts. While most are entertained by the show up and race schedule since NASCAR’s return, one of the drawbacks is that one of NASCAR’s staying powers may shut down their operations is a tough blow for the sport. States NASCAR don’t visit
Are there tracks in the country that NASCAR doesn’t visit that could potential hold cup races? HERE’S A GENUINELY INTRIGUING thought posed by Johkyl30 this past week. Considering NASCAR’s growth in the past 30 years, markets like the Pacific Northwest, a region that brought us Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne, or Massachusetts, a sports hub of its own, don’t host top three NASCAR national series races. 0 3 0

Underrated wins?
Can you think of a special win that most have forgotten about? I always think back to the 2005 Advance Auto Parts 500 at Martinsville with Gordon coming back from almost 3 laps down to win. IT’S INCREDIBLE HOW REDDIT NASCAR FANS can recall moments from the past 25 or so years. nicklodin asked about underrated victories. While his example was an under the radar win for Jeff Gordon, tsrhr14fan reminded folks about the incredible 1997 XFINITY Series season finale at Homestead won by Joe Nemechek.

▶ While Ryan Blaney’s excelled in the NASCAR Cup Series, it’s remarkable how his father, Dave, continues to win sprint car races at an incredible clip. It’s impressive watching the young Padawan flying through the field like Luke Skywalker in Beggar’s Canyon prior to becoming a Jedi Knight. However, the Buckeye Bullet has showcased his ageless talents in those high-powered dirt track machines. To quote Darth Vader, “When I left you, I was but the learner. Now I am the master.” 0 3 2

▶ One of the neatest things with NASCAR’s growth this year is that it’s brought new fans into the sport. Former NFL safety Bernard Pollard has been a constant presence on Twitter during the race weekends and he’s made sure to ask questions among his new peers and fans. Welcoming new faces into the fold and making them feel accepted is a tremendous step for NASCAR’s progress. In time, perhaps Pollard may bring in other new fans into the racing scene.

▶ It takes a genuine individual to own up to their mistakes. In this case, Tyler “Wreck-It” accepted responsibility for a wreck that took himself and Erik Jones out of contention from Saturday’s Pocono Organics 325. Maybe Mr. Wreck-It will find some sympathy with Tyler Reddit or, more importantly, Tyler Reddick.

▶ If NASCAR still hands out the “Goody’s Headache Powder Award,” Alex Bowman definitely deserves it after a tough outing at “The World’s Fastest Half Mile.” Still, while he lost his chance at a race win in a situation not of his doing, he didn’t relinquish his witty sense of humor.
