Pocono’s Racing was a Tricky Travesty This Sunday was the Pocono 400 at Pocono Raceway, and in this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp talks us through what we saw on the track this weekend. Pocono has always been famous for its unconventional racing. The 2.5 mile long “tricky triangle” has a series of difficult corners immediately proceeding a long straightaway, and this shape gives Pocono its reputation for difficulty, strategic complexity, and unforgiving punishments. This weekend, though, that combination of the tricky triangle and the new 2019 aero package left fans less than thrilled with the 0 0 4

on track racing product this week. Eric walks us through all of the details surrounding what happened on the track. Eric also notes that the weekend’s winner, Kyle Busch, is now approaching even more impressive records, with his latest Pocono victory putting him 9th in overall Cup series victories, tying with Rusty Wallace. And of course, we have the Groovy Gauge. Where does Eric rank the Pocono 400 and it’s on track racing product, especially compared to the spectacular racing we’ve seen the rest of the season? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

Kyle Busch cruises to a comfortable win

K

yle Busch collected a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series-leading fourth win of 2019, taking the checkered flag on Sunday evening by a substantial margin over Brad Keselowski in a ho-hum, hard-to-pass kind of affair at sleepy Pocono Raceway. Before the series heads to Michigan International Speedway this weekend, here are five takeaways from Sunday’s Pocono 400 at “The Tricky Triangle.” By Jared Turner

Inconsistency Is Plaguing Martin Truex Jr.

W

hile speed hasn’t been a problem for Martin Truex Jr. and his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing team in recent weeks, a lack of consistency has been their Achilles Heel. Sprinkled in alongside his three wins in the past six points races are finishes of 20th, 19th and 35th — the last of these coming after Truex’s Toyota lost an engine 91 laps into Sunday’s 160-lap affair at Pocono. As a result of Sunday’s blown motor, the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion finished 35th in the 37-car field and dropped to seventh in the standings. While Truex is a lock for the playoffs by virtue of his three wins, the reality is that the kind of inconsistency he’s displayed in his first year with Joe Gibbs Racing doesn’t bode well for a deep playoff run in an elimination-style format. To be one of the four drivers in title contention heading into the winner-take-all season finale at Homestead, Truex is going to have to find a way to finish reasonably well — even on days when circumstances don’t line up in his favor.

Kyle Larson Just Can’t Shake the Bad Luck

A

fter a tough start to 2019, Kyle Busch enjoyed a reprieve from his misery when he won the All-Star Race and earned a million dollars a couple weekends ago at Charlotte Motor Speedway. But things didn’t go well for Larson in the Charlotte race that actually counted for points — the Coca-Cola 600 — and the misfortune continued Sunday at Pocono where he finished a disappointing 26th after winning the first two stages and having one of the fastest cars. The catalyst for Larson’s poor finish was a self-inflicted mistake that occurred when he cut across the nose of Clint Bowyer’s car and slapped the Turn 1 wall late in the race. “I tried to be really aggressive and fit in that hole,” Larson said. “I haven’t seen a replay but am assuming I just wasn’t clear and I turned myself in the wall. I hate that I did that. I’ve just got to be smarter.”

Passing Was Painfully Difficult At Pocono

N

o one — not even race winner Kyle Busch — offered a very glowing take on the quality of the racing at Pocono, where passing proved to be painfully difficult. “I think I passed one car today,” Busch said. Polesitter William Byron could relate. “It felt like any time I got within striking distance to somebody, I just couldn’t quite get there,” he said. Finishing 2.224 seconds behind Busch in second-place was Brad Keselowski, who seemed no more thrilled about how tough catching and passing cars proved to be. Given the circumstances, Keselowski was never really optimistic about his chances of mounting a charge on Busch in the closing laps. “He was strong,” Keselowski said. “He was one of the fastest cars. Not only was he one of the fastest cars but if you were a 20th-place car and got into the lead today, you were going to drive away. It is just the way the rules were.”

Austin Dillon Is Miffed at Paul Menard

A

ustin Dillon’s day ended abruptly and in dramatic fashion on Sunday at Pocono when a bump from his former teammate, Paul Menard, sent the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet into the wall and out of the race. Dillon, who completed just 28 of 160 laps and finished last in the 37-car field, was none too pleased about the contact that ruined his afternoon. “Paul Menard has been doing this for a long time,” Dillon said. “He still hasn’t figured it out, I guess. I don’t know where I was supposed to go or what I was supposed to do. He just ran into the back of me and missed the corner. He overshot it.” That Menard took the blame for the accident was of no consolation to Dillon. “It’s disappointing,” Dillon said. “That’s all I’ve got to say about it. There’s nothing nice I have to say about him right now.”

Kyle Busch Has Enjoyed A Pocono Renaissance — and He Credits His Crew Chief

S

ince going notably winless in his first 25 starts at Pocono, Kyle Busch has become the new kingpin of the three-turn track commonly known as “The Tricky Triangle.” With his win on Sunday, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has now captured three of the past four events at Pocono. Busch, however, deflects most of the credit to crew chief Adam Stevens. “It’s just kind of clicked,” Busch said after leading almost exactly half of Sunday’s race. “We’ve been really, really good here with Adam. Adam is obviously a great leader and a great crew chief and does a really good job being able to listen to me. Through practice, when we talk about what things I need help with and need worked on on the race car to make myself better in Turn 1 or Turn 2 or Turn 3, he’s able to give it to me. That’s what makes a great crew chief.”

Just Sayin’ Kyle Busch was rude to reporters following his win at Pocono.

Grow up, Kyle Busch By Jared Turner

A

nyone who has ever seen my columns knows I’ve never been reluctant to heap praise on Kyle Busch, whom I consider one of the most talented drivers to ever sit behind the wheel of a stock car. Busch also brings a certain brashness that I believe is great for NASCAR at a time the sport could use more drivers with colorful personalities. That being said, all drivers — Busch included — should always maintain a certain level of decency in a public setting. Busch, however, failed miserably in this regard during the post-race winner’s press conference at Pocono. Instead of being in the kind of jovial mood typical of race winners, Busch was noticeably testy during the roughly 10-minute session, which came after he had turned in one of his most dominant performances of the year. So sour was Busch’s mood that one reporter actually asked him if he was happy. It was an odd question, to be certain, but

0 1 8

Pocono rearview: June 3, 2019

one that warranted an answer. “Am I happy? Sure, yeah,” Busch said, dripping with sarcasm. “When you win, there’s a lot of guys that enjoy it a heck of a lot more and get the high from it, but to me, that’s what I’m supposed to do. That’s my job.” Earlier during the press conference, Busch bristled when asked the second of back-to-back questions about the 2019 rules package, of which he’s been an outspoken critic. “Stop asking me package questions!” Busch said, raising his voice to a level that some would call yelling. “I’m done answering them. Next.” And with that, the subject changed. But Busch’s bad attitude persisted. So, here’s the deal: If Busch doesn’t want to discuss the rules package or any other topic, that’s his prerogative. But there’s simply no reason to be rude and disrespectful — especially when you’ve just won a race.

Four Tips to Becoming a Better Online Racer Pocono’s Racing was a Tricky Travesty By M atteo M archeschi

i

Racing can be a roller coaster, and, for some, crashes happen more than they should, whether caused by the driver or not. While some situations can’t be avoided, there’s plenty that can be done to avoid incidents on track, and to become a faster and cleaner driver. Here are just a few examples:

▶▶ Look ahead as far as possible, and know what to look for to spot trouble early. When your eyes are just on the bit of the 0 2 2

Pocono rearview: June 3, 2019

track right in front of you, seemingly obvious hazards, such as a car spinning on track, can go unnoticed until it’s too late. This can also help you hit your line in the corners, since you’re looking where you want to go, not where you are. ▶▶ Don’t hesitate to use the brakes to avoid an incident. When something goes wrong in front of you, it’s easy to floor it through the smoke and hope you’ll get out the other side.

NASCAR eSports However, more often than not, this will end in disaster. It may seem obvious, but the middle pedal is your best friend when avoiding a crash. Not only does slowing down allow you more time to decide on how you’ll avoid contact, it also allows more sudden movements to be made over a small distance. ▶▶ Assume other drivers will make the wrong decisions, especially in rookies. Much like on the road, it can be easy to become complacent and assume drivers will always do the right thing, but many don’t, especially early in their career. Leaving plenty of space between yourself and other drivers can help alleviate any issues with erratic drivers.

▶▶ Minimize steering inputs as much as possible. When cornering, it can be easy to wrestle the car around, since it can feel like you’re doing more to get it around the corner, but, generally, less steering input is better. When you’re tight in the corners, and the nose won’t turn, too much input can scrub the front tires, making the issue worse over time. When you’re loose, too much input, especially when it’s sudden, can cause the back end of the car to step out and send you spinning. While these four tips might not solve all your difficulties, iRacing is a learning experience, and any progress is good! Good luck in your races, and I hope these tips helped!

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

0 2 8

Pocono rearview: June 3, 2019

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal

health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
