WILL ONE DRIVER SEPARATE HIMSELF FROM THE PICKUP THROWDOWN FIELD? BY ROB TIONGSON

fter three rounds of the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series, three different winners have prevailed while the virtual race shops are busily massaging and repairing their steel chariots for the next Thursday night battle. While Christian Eckes, Santino Ferrucci, and Timmy Hill have bragging rights with their wins respectively at Texas, Kansas, and Michigan, the entire PUTD field has their sights set on Round 4 at the virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. If the first three tests were difficult for our competitive field, the penultimate race of this

special series is about as treacherous as it gets. This 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval is relatively flat with Turns 1 and 2 banked at 11 degrees while Turns 3 and 4 are banked at only nine degrees. Although this venue has been in operation since 1967, the oval has only been around since 1997. Despite relatively fast pole speeds in the past five years, with the pole sitter’s speed averaging 137.848 miles per hour, it’s one of the toughest tracks for the Truck Series. Averaging over six cautions and playing host to the unusual tussle between John Wes Townley and Spencer Gallagher in 2016, it’s safe to say that tempers can and possibly flare before the checkered flag. Last year’s Truck Series race treated the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series

TRUCK TALK: A PREVIEW OF THE BOMMARITO.COM 100 AT GATEWAY regulars kindly with Todd Gilliland (second), Stewart Friesen (third), Brett Moffitt (fifth), and Sheldon Creed (seventh) with top10 results. Based on their virtual performances in the past three weeks, it’d not be surprising to see Gilliland, Friesen, Moffitt, and Creed feel like they’ve got “homefield” advantage, at least in the early going. The action can be quite competitive at the front of the field with 9.8 lead changes in the last five races at Gateway. Even if this race is half of the distance of the regular Truck Series’ normal summertime date at this Midwest speedway, it’s bound to be a doozy with only two more chances at victories and some cash before the return of on-track competition. If your favorite driver happens to be in a Chevrolet Silverado, then you’ll like their chances on Thursday night. Four of the five past races at Gateway have been won by a driver with the famed bowtie badge. However, as of press time, 0 0 4
■■ Gateway Speedway offers unique challenges for Truck Series drivers.
none of the current full-time PUTD competitors have won a race at Gateway. Surely, pit strategy will play a hand in deciding who contends for the win and who’ll be wondering about dirty air during the waning laps. As evident in the past three races, these trucks may love four fresh tires, but it’s almost like taking a shower in a house without a working air conditioning unit. Speaking of hot, that’s what the conditions will most definitely be at Gateway. With a title sponsor like IceBox, drivers will wish that the virtual weather conditions were chillier or cool enough like an IceBox portable air conditioner. Essentially, the track will be slick, hot, and in no mood to play kindly to our competitors. Then again, when does our field ever play nicely?

s we head towards the homestretch of the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series, the series takes to Darlington Raceway’s little sister in the Midwest. The virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway is bound to be a dandy for our regulars vying for a win or the series championship.

For this Thursday night, there’s two battles that’ll be fun to watch and it’ll be more than watching the tussle for the lead. These four racers know how to mix it up and do not know what it means to lift during race day. Now, here’s the matchups to watch for the Bommarito.com 100 at Gateway!

TALE OF THE TAPE
YES, BRETT MOFFITT HAS THE 2018 NASCAR GANDER RV AND OUTDOORS TRUCK Series championship in his resume while Ryan Truex often tells people that he’s not a “Junior.” Most importantly, these are two tenacious young racers who don’t mind trading paint even if it’s Lap 17. Moffitt earned his first top-10 finish of the PUTD last Thursday night at Michigan after two frustrating races. Even so, he’s been a regular contender at the front of the field, and he’s reminded folks that he’s quite the stellar racer and not just a facsimile of Mr. Pringles. Truex is a passionate driver who’s not afraid to gain track position with unorthodox pit strategy. However, just like Moffitt, RT earned his first top-10 (and top-five) at Michigan, and he finds himself just seven markers behind points leader Santino Ferrucci. While it’s easy to choose Moffitt based on his on-track record. All told, Truex can’t be easily dismissed and is a capable contender in NASCAR, whether for real or in the digital world. Look for Truex to have the early advantage with his wise, aggressive approach. 0 0 8

MAINE VERSUS TEXAS, EH? OK, SO BRENNAN POOLE MAY ORIGINALLY BE FROM FOLSOM, Calif., but he’s a Texan while Austin Theriault has been the pride of Fort Kent, ME. Both are stellar drivers who are hungry and leave little on the track whenever they’re in the field. Austin Theriault’s stock car journey has been quite adventurous. While he won the 2017 ARCA Racing Series championship in 2017, he’s been searching for a full-time opportunity in NASCAR. Taking quality opportunities over the past two seasons, Theriault has a sixth at Michigan which puts him in a three-way tie for 11th with Josh Reaume and Brennan Poole, his Tale of the Tape rival. Poole’s career has been one of survival and relevancy. He’s shown that he’s got the makings to win races and doesn’t let his tough circumstances define his career. Perseverance has paid off with the young racer netting a solid Cup Series ride for 2020. Also, he has a steady seventh from last Thursday night at Michigan. Certainly, this is a tough matchup to call as these are two cagey racers who are appreciative and humble. All in all, Theriault has the very slight edge with his calculated approach in this series. 0 0 9

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT DRAGONFIRE TOOLS was started in the spring of 2016. I was a machinist in the United States Navy on board the ballistic missile submarine, USS Pennsylvania SSBN 735, from 1992 to 1996, so I know all about getting dirty and turning wrenches. The most valuable thing I learned in business is to under-promise and over-deliver every time to the customer. This way, the customer is never disappointed. When I started this, my goal was to try and put together an affordable and quality solution for home shops, garages and industrial shops. I wanted to offer an alternative to big-name brand boxes that cost sometimes tens of thousands of dollars and offer little to no work space. By putting together a workbench along with tool storage we solved multiple problems at the same time We are constantly upgrading our cabinets and workbenches using feedback from customers just like you who are using these everyday. Our commitment to our fellow wrench-turners is to continue to strive to provide the best quality product at an affordable price. All The Best, Lew Amicone
