ime flies when you’re having fun. In this case, four of the five races for the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series have gone by quite quickly. When this series kicked off at the virtual Texas Motor Speedway, there was no telling how the action would ensue for NASCAR’s young, bright stars from the Cup, XFINITY, and Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. However, it’s quite clear how this is a 10-driver battle for the championship. While 10 drivers have a shot at the title, the field has their sights on winning the IceBox 100 at the virtual HomesteadMiami Speedway, the site of this season’s finale. If competitors

have their minds on waterskiing on the infield lake, their minds are in the wrong place. Since the 1996 season, NASCAR’s toughest truck drivers have taken to this 1.5-mile superspeedway. Originally built in the style of a mini Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this track has been reconfigured twice in his storied history. With the short chutes converted into sweeping turns, it was one of the most challenging, treacherous flat tracks in NASCAR before its radical change prior to the 2003 season finale. This state-of-the-art speedway’s corners were drastically changed into “progressive” banked turns ranging from 18 to 20 degrees. As a result, this track has become one of

TRUCK TALK: A PREVIEW OF THE ICEBOX 100 AT MIAMI the fastest, fiercest asphalt arenas around. Indeed, this is the track in which Brendan Gaughan told a certain truck series owner to kiss his behind during the 2003 season finale. Certainly, it’s the site of Cale Gale’s razor thin victory over Kyle Busch in 2012. Most importantly, it’s a track in which some of our competitors have visited the winner’s circle. Austin Hill and Brett Moffitt took the checkered flag at Homestead in the past two seasons, with title contenders like Christian Eckes and Harrison Burton have finished inside the top15 during those occasions. Surely, this quartet would seem prime for the win on Thursday night. In the past five races at Homestead, the average number of lead changes is 11.4, quite stellar considering how this speedway has played host to the final NASCAR Truck race of the year since 2002. Moreover, it’s a track where cautions are as frequent as the number of times that 0 0 4

the Joker made someone laugh in the 2019 thriller. Homestead has treated the Toyota teams quite kindly with four wins in the past five Truck races. Not to mention, it’s treated those who’ve started towards the front in a friendly manner. The average starting spot for a race winner since 2015 is 2.6. Ultimately, while the focus will be on winning this 100-lap challenge, for those in contention for the championship fight, there’s $500 on the line, an IceBox Helmet Cooler system valued at $5,000, and a Dragonfire Workbench valued at $4,000. y all means, the focus should be on those battling for the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series championship. After all, in the world of sports, fans typically pay attention to those who battle tenaciously for supremacy. However, the IceBox 100 at the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway will be more than just title bragging rights prior to the return of the NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series. In this case, there’s a win on the line for our field. Here’s a gander at two pivotal matchups so worthwhile to watch, they just may make you look like a genius among family and friends!

ONE OF THE NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ AGGRESSIVE RACERS VERSUS ONE OF THE MOST tenacious NASCAR Truck Series drivers around. Nothing could go wrong here, right? If this was the first thought, you missed the fireworks from last Thursday night’s Bommarito.com 100 at the virtual Gateway. On Lap 88, all hell broke loose in Turn 1 of the virtual Gateway when Brett Moffitt veered right into Santino Ferrucci’s truck. However, there’s more to these drivers than this incident. Ferrucci won Round 2 at the virtual Kansas Speedway when he avoided Stewart Friesen and Josh Bilicki near the stripe on the final lap. With an average finish of 8.5, the Connecticut native is about as consistent and dangerous as they get in this series. Moffitt, who sits 19 points from the points lead, has been dominant at times before trouble finds him on the track. With a sixth at virtual Michigan, the 2018 Truck Series champ would love nothing more than a win at virtual Homestead. While Ferrucci’s strong, Moffitt wins this matchup as he’s a man with nothing to lose. 0 0 8

WHILE THE FIRST MATCHUP FOCUSES ON A RACING BATTLE THAT MAY PLAY OUT LIKE AN NHL fight, this one’s all about the championship. Both drivers have incredible average finishes of 8.5 or better, a testament to their skills on the track and virtual realm. Burton was the beneficiary of Hill’s misfortune last Thursday night at Gateway. As Hill led the way on the final lap, he received a little bump and run from Anthony Alfredo. However, this tap sent both drivers up the hill with Burton swooping to the inside to steal the win and points lead. Entering Thursday night’s struggle at Homestead as the points leader by just five points, Burton could either feel like he’s got a target on his back or feel like he’s ruler of this series. Knowing this young racer, he will lean towards the latter and with an average finish of 7.75, he ought to feel like the king of these virtual trucks. All told, Hill has been consistent with an average finish of 8.5 and he knows how to step it up when the going gets tough. Like older brother Timmy, it’s safe to say that Tyler Hill drives with the heart of a champion. However, it’d not be surprising to see Burton win this matchup and series. 0 0 9

t has come to this in the IceBox Pickup Throwdown Series. After four grueling, arduous, exciting, and emotional races that started at the virtual Texas Motor Speedway last month, it’s been quite the journey for NASCAR’s stars of the Cup Series, XFINITY Series, and Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series as well as one of NTT IndyCar Series’ most tenacious racers. As the virtual haulers bring our contenders to the digital Homestead-Miami Speedway for the season finale for this special series, it’ll be more than just prize money and bragging rights to consider. Virtually, it’s possible that anyone in the top-20 has an outside shot at the championship. But we’ll get real and point out to 10 drivers to watch for the championship in Thursday night’s IceBox 100, and we’ll do so right now.

BESIDES THE FACT THAT HARRISON Burton’s logged a win at Gateway, a second at Texas, and a seventh at Kansas, it’s not like this NASCAR XFINITY Series racer has done much. For real though, Burton has been a consistent frontrunner who’s willing to get aggressive at the right time throughout this course of the series.

SURE, FERRUCCI HAS RUFFLED A FEW feathers and that may have netted him that encounter with the Turn 1 wall of the virtual World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. However, when he does play nice and uses that chrome horn at the right time, he mixes it up with NASCAR’s brightest XFINTIY and Truck Series racers. 0 1 1

WHILE HE MISSED GATEWAY AND finished 26th at Michigan, Eckes has been dangerously good in the IceBox Pickup Series races. Just 11 markers from the points lead, look for Eckes to be a solid threat for the IceBox 100 win and championship with his balanced approach. 0 1 2

IT SEEMS LIKE AUSTIN WAYNE SELF’S shown two types of speed – go and stop. When he’s stopped just once like he did at Kansas, it’s been as low as 29th. But when he’s on “go,” he’s been 10th or better in those three races which makes him quite the wild card at Homestead.

IN A FOUR-WAY FIGHT FOR SIXTH WITH Ryan Truex, Josh Bilicki, and Hermie Sadler, Mr. Anderson’s been feast or famine in these past four races. However, he’s definitely a racer to consider, especially if 007 is as she was at Michigan, a track that’s somewhat similar to Homestead, the season finale venue.

LIKE ECKES, BILICKI MISSED GATEWAY but he’s been such a solid contender in the IceBox Pickup Series races with a fourth at Texas, third at Kansas, and 11th at Michigan. If he’s in this Thursday night’s race at Homestead, look for this hardy racer, a lover of Culver’s, to be a stout title threat as he’s only 12 points out of the lead. 0 1 3

AFTER A SO-SO START IN THE ICEBOX Pickup Throwdown Series, Tyler Hill’s been quite strong with a fourth at Michigan and a fifth at Gateway. After seeing victory get snatched away from him at Gateway, he’s going to be laser focused at Homestead. 0 1 4

IF RYAN TRUEX CAN SHAKE OFF THE Jeff Gordon 1999 season bug that he’s faced in the PUTD, he stands a realistic shot at the title at Homestead. Perhaps he can borrow brother Martin’s luck from 2017 and come through with quite the riveting win on Thursday night.

AFTER A TRIO OF SETBACKS IN WHICH he was a victim of circumstances at Texas, Kansas, and Michigan, the real Derek Kraus showed up with a runner-up at Gateway. Fast, tenacious, and sneaky, the quietly confident young racer has all the makings to take it all, even if he’s sometimes an “under the radar” contender.
