REAL LIFE TEMPERS AT VIRTUAL RICHMOND! In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes a look at the latest installment of the eNASCAR Pro Invitational Series, this time coming from the virtual Richmond Raceway. It was the first race back following some unfortunate driver incidents, and all eyes were on it. It’s a good thing, too, as Eric breaks down how this race at Richmond might have been one of the best iRacing events NASCAR and 0 0 4
FOX have put on so far during the season suspension. The lack of fast repairs put drivers into the right mindset, leaving this race feeling like an authentic ontrack experience. So what was the result of all the mid-week roster changes from NASCAR and iRacing? And where will this virtual Richmond wind up on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

THINGS WE LEARNED AT RICHMOND (IRACING STYLE) WILLIAM BYRON PROVES UNSTOPPABLE AT VIRTUAL RICHMOND Perhaps William Byron should have customized No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro cars for as long as there’s Pro Invitational Series races. Then again, when it comes to racing at any kind of Richmond Raceway, having the power of Rusty, in this case, Rusty Walrus, by your side will almost guarantee a trip to Victory Lane. While Byron repeated his winning ways on Sunday, there were other memorable moments from the Toyota Owners 150. From Clint Bowyer to Matt DiBenedetto, let’s talk about the five things we’ve learned from virtual Richmond! BY ROB TIONGSON

SHORT TRACK TEMPERS FLARE UP AT RICHMOND
R
ichmond Raceway in any rendition will frustrate the most mild-mannered individuals around. It didn’t matter if you’re Matt DiBenedetto or Garrett Smithley. Frustrating circumstances brought out the tempers with these typically cool customers. Still, at least in the case of DiBenedetto, he took the time to cool off and realize it’s just sim racing and that it’s all in the name of fun. Smithley acknowledged his part with getting swept up in Richmond mayhem. When it comes down to it, no resets in Pro Invitational Series races won’t eliminate the close quarter, paint trading action that sometimes results in inevitable contact. However, for about 90 minutes, Sunday’s race almost felt like the real deal in terms of heated tempers followed up with calmer post-race reflections. Even NASCAR’s Steve O’Donnell got in on the fun on Twitter as he teased DiBenedetto having to utilize a much-maligned racing package for all races.

BUBBA WALLACE COMES THROUGH WITH TOP-10 FINISH
U
pon reflection, how many of us haven’t thrown the video game controller in frustration or cursed at our TV when things go awry? Bubba Wallace was able to put his forgettable Bristol weekend behind him with a ninth-place finish at virtual Richmond Raceway with a paint scheme reminiscent of Billy Hagan’s No. 94 ride from the early 1990’s. Climbing from the 28th starting spot and surviving some short track madness in the early going, Wallace drove steadily up the leaderboard at the virtual rendition of “The Action Track.” Furthermore, Wallace showcased class and maturity during a difficult week for racing and he capped it off with a great result. Following the race, Wallace celebrated by doing a Polish Victory Lap and he even did a little burnout for the fans watching his stream and for those digital NASCAR enthusiasts who never sat down. Hello, Bubba burnouts at a quiet track!

CLINT BOWYER MAXIMIZES HIS SHORTENED VIRTUAL SUNDAY
W
hether you’re press or a fan in the world of NASCAR, Clint Bowyer is someone who typically says some gems live on-the-air or in his in-car radio communications during normal times. However, during these unusual times, Bowyer, like his peers, are partaking in the Pro Invitational Series races each weekend. With four races in the books for this digital racing series, Bowyer has been a source of incredible entertainment while providing some authentic commentary when he chimes in during the telecast. Once his engine went sour during Sunday’s Toyota Owners 150, Bowyer “joined” Mike Joy, Jeff Gordon, and his witty “crew chief” Larry McReynolds in the Steve Byrnes Studio to commentate the rest of the race. Sure, he’s fun to watch on the track. However, the typically excitable driver was solid with his insights while having smooth rapport in the booth, particularly with Gordon, his friend and favorite comedy foil.

CASSILL AND HILL SHOWCASE TALENTS IN IRACING
M
aybe some good will happen for Landon Cassill and Timmy Hill when all is said and done with the Pro Invitational Series. While there’s no telling what the future holds when we return to the actual tracks, Cassill and Hill have shown their prowess in the racecar while mixing it up with usual frontrunners in Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, and Denny Hamlin. Consider that Joey Logano, the 2018 Cup Series champion, admitted that he’s needed time to adapt to this style of racing. Meanwhile, Cassill and Hill have consistently run towards the front of the field in these four races. As Hill proved to be “King of the Road” at Texas Motor Speedway, Cassill’s knocked on the door of Victory Lane virtually, no pun intended, each weekend. Perhaps frontrunning team owners or influential sponsors are taking notice of these two stalwarts of NASCAR in terms of boosting their on-track careers.

BYRON CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP WINNING RACES
W
illiam Byron’s continued iRacing success is truly remarkable and inspirational stuff as he leads NASCAR’s efforts with virtual competition during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following his second Pro Invitational Series win, Byron took the time to acknowledge the iRacing platform and how it’s helped with his on-track NASCAR career. “I wasn’t in a racing family growing up so this was really my avenue to cut my teeth,” Byron said. “I feel like in my generation, it’s pretty normal. Very thankful for what it’s done for me.” Parlaying his success from the digital realm with his actual on-track career, Byron could be a great catalyst for racers in the eNASCAR CocaCola iRacing Series to garner actual on-track car owner’s attention with possible routes into the top three national series. Ultimately, Byron just goes to show that with a little determination and passion, one can achieve their dreams, regardless of any formidable challenges.

JUST SAYIN’
NO MATTER WHAT, THE REVISED SCHEDULE WILL HAVE CRITICS ▶
Numerous reports have circulated in the past week that NASCAR is weighing an array of options for attempting to complete the entire 36-race NASCAR Cup Series itinerary. The biggest challenge, of course, is trying to cram the remaining 32 races into the roughly 25 weeks that will likely remain in the original 2020 schedule once racing resumes. The reality is that no matter how hard NASCAR tries to come up with a schedule that works, it’s impossible to please everyone and some tracks and fans are going to get the proverbial short end of the stick. JA RED TURNER ▶ MATT DIBENEDETTO’S TWEET (AND COSTUME) BRING LEVITY TO IRACING From Kyle Larson’s inexcusable use of a racial slur during an iRace on April 12 to all the unnecessary drama surrounding Bubba Wallace’s early exit from an iRace the previous weekend, it’s fair to say that not all of the virtual racing done during this NASCAR sabbatical has been as lighthearted as it should be. Therefore, it was refreshing to see Matt DiBenedetto — clad in giraffe costume — post a video on Twitter merely joking about how he wanted to fight Ryan Preece after the two drivers tangled in Sunday’s iRacing event.
■■ NASCAR will not be able to please everyone with a revised schedule once the sport returns to action.
0 1 8
▶ NASCAR’S HIATUS HASN’T BEEN SO BAD FOR RYAN NEWMAN While most of the NASCAR world has suffered from the break in the action resulting from COVID-19, Ryan Newman is one notable exception. Injured in a horrific crash on the final lap of February’s Daytona 500, Newman was expected to sit out a considerable portion of the 2020 season. But with no one having competed since the March 8 event at Phoenix, Newman has missed only three races. Whenever Newman is medically cleared to return, he probably won’t be at as much of a disadvantage to his competitors as initially thought.

Matt DiBenedetto BY ROB TIONGSON
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with Matt DiBenedetto, driver of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Menards Ford Mustang. ▶ WHAT’S IT BEEN LIKE FOR YOU TO DRIVE FOR THE FAMED WOOD BROTHERS RACING TEAM IN 2020? “It’s been awesome and a lot of fun. Honestly, it was cool getting into the rhythm and getting started. It stinks that the road got swept off from underneath all of us, but it’s cool and encouraging, especially that we’re top 10 in points and finished second at Las Vegas. And we’re actually disappointed with the results of the last couple of races. We have a lot more potential, so that is a good sign.” ▶ YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN THE OK TO BUILD YOUR DREAM RACETRACK. WHAT KIND WOULD YOU BUILD AND WHERE WOULD IT BE? “I think I would put it here in Hickory, N.C., and I would race in my backyard at Hickory Motor Speedway, one of my favorite tracks and my home turf. Or, if I were building a racetrack, I would duplicate Lucas Oil Raceway. It’s one of the coolest racetracks. Either Lucas Oil Raceway or Irwindale.” ▶ YOU’VE HAD INCREDIBLE, CAREER-DEFINING MOMENTS AT BRISTOL. HOW SPECIAL IS BRISTOL TO YOU? That place has been special to me because I’ve had a lot of my career-defining moments there. I’m still the youngest winner in history there. I won a big late model race there in 2008 when I was only 16. Then, with BK Racing (in 2016), I finished sixth, which was huge for a small team. In the No. 95 last year, I almost won the race. It made a huge impact with my whole life and career. It’s a short track where you can try and overachieve at that place and run well.

Social Distancing, Earnhardt Style
If the late Dale Earnahrdt, Sr. knew how to do this at Talladega Superspeedway in 1993, why can’t some folks do the same today? But in this case, fans recalled some of their memories of superspeedway racing during the days when Rusty Wallace (and not our Rusty Walrus) drove a Pontiac, Kyle Petty and his epic hairdo with the Mello Yello colors, and Dale Jarrett piloting the “which shade of green” Interstate Batteries car. Who else misses the Chevrolet Lumina?

Here’s a unique story that stemmed before the 1995 NASCAR Cup Series season. In a post shared by user BonecosDoBruno, who knew that Ernie Irvan, who was just months past his horrific accident at Michigan, was at Daytona International Speedway and snuck in some laps in his No. 28 Texaco-Havoline Ford? Sure, Dale Jarrett and Ernie Irvan sported mustaches, but that had to take some clever maneuvering to make this happen. Imagine this scenario playing out in today’s NASCAR scene. 0 2 6

e’re all waiting patiently -- well, maybe not so patiently -- for the return of live racing. There are only so many classic races and iRacing events to satisfy our NASCAR fix. On Friday, NASCAR postponed race events through May 9, the scheduled Mother’s Day weekend night race at Martinsville Speedway. The good news: NASCAR officials have said the intention is to run a 36-race schedule this year with a potential return to racing without fans in attendance in May at a date and location to be determined. We asked our ROAR contributors to share their blueprints for a return to racing, and we picked some of the best responses to share with you. Here are some of the topics that elicited their opinions. O
ne contributor felt the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend offers the perfect locale for a return to racing. “Regardless of whether fans are allowed to attend, the first race back should unequivocally be the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend. The reasons are obvious: It’s one of the biggest and most patriotic races of the season, it’s NASCAR’s longest race, and the track is in the drivers’ and teams’ backyards. Might as well start close to home and go big, in terms of a race with a lot of history and prestige, after such a lengthy hiatus.” Another writer felt the All-Star race at Charlotte on June 17 offers a nice restart opportunity. “I’m going with Charlotte on Wednesday June 17 for the All-Star Race. No points and a good place to get started since teams will be close to home.”

he fatigue factor for drivers, teams and NASCAR officials if they follow through on their intention to race all 36 races in 2020. Our writers had some recommendations to avoid fatigue. “Shorten race weekends and, possibly, shorten race distances. The length of virtual NASCAR races seems to be sufficient but of course, on-track action is special as most sporting events in person. This may mean eliminating live pit stops, but only because of the importance of physical distancing.” Another contributor felt qualifying runs would put an unnecessary stress on the drivers. “First, eliminate qualifying and run starting lineups by points. Saves time and concern about wrecking cars.” Another contributor felt we should model our response after the energy crisis of 1973. “Cut all Cup races by 50 miles to help preserve cars and engines. It was done during the energy crisis of 1973 where every race was cut by 50 miles to conserve fuel.”

f all of our contributors, none thought NASCAR should scrap races from the schedule due to the month-plus of postponements. “Forget the back-to-back off-weekends scheduled for later this year. If NASCAR has any hope of squeezing in all 36 races, it’s going to mean racing every weekend the rest of the season and likely stretching the season into late November (which has happened before) instead of having the season end on Nov. 8 as originally scheduled. Nov. 8 is an atypically early date for the last race, anyway, so stretching the season out a couple of weekends past this shouldn’t be a problem.” Racing twice a week will have to be considered if NASCAR wants to stick to a 36-race schedule, according to one contributor. “Run a weekday and weekend schedule for 22 races with 10 Playoffs races back to normal starting in early October. The NASCAR Awards Banquet could be held Dec. 16, and then the season is done.”

e’re all working outside our comfort zones in the new norms of social distancing, video conferencing and online engagement. NASCAR”s biggest stars will have to adjust to these new norms like everyone else. “I recommend continued emphasis on social distancing with TV being the vehicle for bringing races to fans. But do it in such a way that there’s a stronger connection to the fans, such as personal phone calls to fans from drivers. Display decals of well wishes inside cars from fans to teams and drivers. The fans can play a part too. Email photos to NBC of fans wearing driver gear, fans on video expressing loyalty to their driver. We can provide closer access to drivers and teams through video, such as Zoom conferencing with fans. Take them where they normally can’t go through technology. Emphasize personal recognition.”

ASCAR is going to have to get cooperation from track owners, teams, and television partners to wipe the slate clean and draft an entirely new schedule. “Obviously. run the schedule on geographical location or region. But in order to make this work, teams will have to send next week’s cars on top racks of transporters or in box trailers ahead to time to the next race on the schedule. Case in point, short track engines and cars can’t be used on super speedways.” The revised schedule might include two NASCAR Cup Series races at a single track on a given week. “When NASCAR heads to Pocono, go ahead and hit New Hampshire while in the northeastern corner of the country. Ditto for Daytona’s second race and the Homestead race. Likewise, the races at Martinsville, Richmond and Bristol could all be clumped together, where you could literally run all six (two at each track) over a period of two weeks or less.”
