High Stakes Drama in the Truck Series
I
n this episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us the context on the ongoing drama in the NASCAR Truck series. No. 13 driver Johnny Sauter and No. 44 driver Ross Chastain have both found themselves the topic of conversation this week, neither for reasons they’d like. The stories are both fallout from last weekend’s spectacular race at Iowa Speedway, in which No. 24 driver Brett Moffitt improbably found himself as the first driver in decades to win a race without leading a single lap. How? First up, Ross Chastain originally took the

checkered flag. While the vehicle passed prerace inspection, under NASCAR’s new focus on the sport’s integrity, post-race inspections happen on-site. The No. 44 didn’t pass. Eric explains the circumstances to take us inside the controversy. Why was the appeal denied? What does it mean for the team moving forward? Finally, there’s the drama around Johnny Sauter, who closed out Iowa with a suspension, stemming from an on-track altercation with No. 16’s Austin Hill. How did that all go down? Watch the episode and find out!

fter a much needed weekend of rest for drivers and teams, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series is set to return to action with the running of the first road course race of the 2019 season. Here are five key storylines to watch for in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at always entertaining Sonoma Raceway in Northern California’s beautiful Wine Country. By Jared Turner

oad courses are no different from certain oval tracks with respect to the fact that certain drivers tend to flourish on them while others rarely do. Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch are the only active drivers with wins at both Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International — the two road courses that have long been a part of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. Based on that stat alone, Truex, Harvick and Busch have to be considered among the favorites to go to Victory Lane this weekend on Sonoma’s twisty layout. “I think the biggest thing you do for Sonoma is watch some film, look at things from the past few years that have worked and some things that haven’t, and look at what has made you better there,” said Busch, a two-time winner in the Sonoma Wine Country. “You always have to be mindful of what has made you good there and what you can improve on.”

DW’s Final Farewell
T
his weekend will mark the final race as part of the FOX NASCAR on-air team for legendary NASCAR driver turned veteran NASCAR broadcaster Darrell Waltrip. Since making his debut as a color commentator for FOX’s NASCAR coverage at the 2001 Daytona 500, a race that will be remembered most for the tragic loss of Dale Earnhardt in a last-lap crash, Waltrip has enjoyed a memorable 19-year run in the broadcast booth that bookended his Hall of Fame driving career that was highlighted by 84 premier series victories and three premier series championships. Waltrip, known to many fans as simply “DW,” will be missed for his folksy, always-entertaining, historian-like perspective on the sport, and, of course, his trademark “Boogity, boogity, boogity!” exhortation at the beginning of each race. Expect his final sign-off from the FOX booth to be an emotional one as he prepares to finally enter into a true retirement phase of life.

Bumping, Banging And Generalized Chaos
S
onoma has become one of the more treacherous stops on the NASCAR tour in recent years, and expect Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 to be no different. Bumping, banging and generalized chaos will likely be the order of the day as drivers go for broke in an effort to not only win the race but to earn as many points as possible. All the jockeying for position and unpredictability will inevitably lead to a variety of strategies, particularly when it comes to fuel and tires and when and how often crew chiefs bring their drivers to pit road. “We’ve had times at Sonoma where we’ve been up front and haven’t been able to hold onto it, and other times when we had the right strategy and we were in the right place at the right time,” said Kyle Busch, who won at Sonoma in 2008 and 2015. “We’ve had some bad luck at times there as well.”

A Return To The Original 12-Turn Sonoma Layout
A
s if racing at Sonoma wasn’t already challenging enough, this weekend’s race will quite literally offer a new twist as the track returns to its historic 12-turn, 2.52-mile road-course layout as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. The full track layout, which was originally unveiled when the raceway opened in 1968, incorporates Sonoma’s signature sweeping downhill corner known as “The Carousel,” which plunges from Turn 4, down through turns 5 and 6, and navigates a more than 200-degree radius turn before dropping onto the raceway’s longest straightaway into the Turn 7 hairpin. NASCAR utilized the full 12-turn course beginning with its first Pacific Coast Late Model Division race at Sonoma in 1969 and continued on it through numerous Cup Series, West Series, Southwest Series and Truck Series events through 1997. Since 1998, NASCAR has competed on a shorter, 1.99-mile configuration, which utilized a bypass connecting turns 4 and 7 known as “The Chute.”

A Breakthrough Win For Johnson, Harvick Or Kurt Busch
J
immie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch are all former Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champions and all former winners at Sonoma Raceway. But, surprisingly, all three are still in search of their first victory of the 2019 season, which is 15 races old. Don’t be surprised if a member of this accomplished trio breaks out of his slump and winds up in Victory Lane this weekend. After all, Sonoma is in many ways a home race for California natives Johnson (El Cajon) and Harvick (Bakersfield). Busch doesn’t hail from the Golden State but is a product of the West Coast, nevertheless, having grown up in Las Vegas. Look for all three of these veterans to show up at Sonoma with a little extra motivation to go out and put their current drought to bed in front of a supportive crowd. If that happens, virtually no one will leave the Wine Country surprised or disappointed.

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Kyle Busch has been fast almost everywhere he’s raced in 2019 and currently boasts a Monster Energy Series-high four victories. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will have a good chance to make it five at Sonoma, a place where he took his No. 18 Toyota to Victory Lane in 2008 and 2015. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. Martin Truex Jr. is the defending race winner at Sonoma, having prevailed on the Northern California road course last season while leading 62 of 110 laps for Furniture Row Racing. Truex also won at Sonoma in 2013 as a driver for Michael Waltrip Racing. Now with Joe Gibbs Racing, Truex is a three-time winner in 2019. ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Kevin Harvick is still chasing his first victory of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, but the StewartHaas Racing driver has many reasons for optimism at Sonoma. Not only is California his home state; Harvick scored a convincing victory on the winding road course in 2017. ▶▶ Joey logano. Riding high on the heels of a victory two weeks ago at Michigan when the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series last convened, Joey Logano is seeking his first ever Sonoma triumph. The reigning series champ knows how to win on road courses, however, as he prevailed at Watkins Glen in 2015. ▶▶ Chase elliott. Chase Elliott earned his first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win last August at Watkins Glen, a 2.45mile road course. This came after the Hendrick Motorsports driver finished fourth at Sonoma in June. Clearly, Elliott has a knack for road racing. Will it prove beneficial again this weekend?

A Win in the Wine Country Stewart Wins at Sonoma Raceway in 2016 By Ben white
O
n June 26, 2016, Tony Stewart, driver of the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 14 Chevrolet, won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway to record the 49th and final Cup Series victory of his 18-year career. The Columbus, Ind., native started the 110-lap race on the 1.9-mile California road course from the 10th position and remained steady near the front of the 40-car field. With only 22 laps remaining, Stewart took the lead on fuel strategy during a caution on lap 88. After another caution on lap 94, drivers Martin Truex Jr. of Furniture Row Racing and Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing filled Stewart’s rearview mirror but helped him increase his lead by racing each other. With eight laps to go, Stewart’s lead was

close to two seconds over Hamlin, as he gained the second position over Truex on lap 102. Hamlin caught and passed Stewart going into Turn 7 on the final lap but came into the last hairpin turn too fast and crashed. Stewart sealed the deal by recording his third career victory on the 12-turn track. The three-time Cup champion made a prediction that came true about his last win in NASCAR. “It’s special, trust me,” Stewart said after ending an 84-race winless streak. “This place has been nice to me in my career. If I don’t win another one, it’s cool to win the last one here.”

atalie Decker, who celebrates her 22nd birthday June 25, grew up in a family that’s legendary for its success in snowmobile racing. Decker’s father, Chuck, won the 1987 World Championship Snowmobile Derby and eventually became the owner of the Eagle River Derby Track, snowmobile racing’s premier facility, in their hometown of Eagle River, Wis. Natalie Decker, however, decided to compete on a more solid surface. She began racing a go-kart at age 9 and won four championships over two seasons before graduating to a FourCylinder Modified Stock Car when she was 12. Decker later worked her way through the Late Model ranks, competing on paved ovals across the country. Decker ran the full ARCA Menards Series for Venturini Motorsports in 2018, winning the pole at Daytona International Speedway and finishing seventh in points. This season, Decker is part of DGR-Crosley’s driver-

crew member profile: Jacen johns It began far from NASCAR circles. The Springfield, Mo., native was at the worldfamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, working as a motorcycle mechanic in the early 2000s. That’s where he met crew chief Tony Liberati in need of a repair to his bike. After seeing Johns there on two separate occasions, Liberati was so impressed he asked if he’d be interested in working in NASCAR. Johns joined Liberati and team owner Michael Gaughan with Orleans Racing in the Camping World Truck Series. Over 14 seasons later, Johns has been
a crew member with Red Bull Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing before joining RFR in 2017. “What I enjoy most is the middle of practice and thrashing on the car after it comes in after a couple of laps,” Johns said. “I love helping change the springs and camber and nose weight and things like that. It’s kind of like being in the game at that point because you only have a certain amount of time to get your work done. In those settings every second matters. The quicker it’s done the better.”

The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

t wasn’t an easy decision to move from the XFINITY Series to the Gander Outdoors Truck Series, but Spencer Boyd knew it was worth it. The goal was to be more competitive, and the shot to race for Young’s Motorsports was a perfect fit.
▶▶ What’s the year been like for you thus far? “Coming from the Xfinity Series, everyone always questions a driver’s decision. For me, it was pretty simple to link up with Tyler Young and be part of this growing team. They’re competitive and have backing from Chevrolet. It was a no-brainer. We’ve had some good weeks and bad weeks.” ▶▶ You’ve brought in several sponsors that have never been on a NASCAR team before. What’s it like to be the guy to introduce companies to motorsports? “I stay pretty busy. I went to college for marketing and I’m a blue-collar guy. I just want to bring as many of those partners that fit that mold, and that’s blue collar, patriotism and businesses that will be loyal to NASCAR. I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of partners come on board.” 0 3 6

NASCAR PETS
Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
