Sonoma Race Review & Analysis
I
n this episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his review of this weekend’s race at Sonoma for the Save Mart 350. The finishing order was packed with surprises and interesting storylines that we don’t normally see at the oval tracks. Martin Truex, Jr.’s victory wasn’t unexpected, but the battles he faced from Kyle Busch certainly put on a quite a show. Truex has historically been quite dominant at Sonoma, but the on-track product gave its fair share of surprises, even with the third place driver and beyond finishing over 30 seconds off the pace.

The commercial breaks were actually one of those most controversial pieces of the race this year, with several green flag breaks along during the first stage. Fans were left grumbling about the competition cautions once again. But the biggest storyline coming out of Sonoma has to be Darrell Waltrip calling his last race as a broadcaster for FOX Sports. That’s right, this was the last time fans would get to hear his iconic boogity-boogity catch phrase at the first wave of the green flag. With all that, where did Sonoma rank on Eric’s patented Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

artin Truex Jr. continued his remarkable season, joining teammate Kyle Busch as a four-time winner in 2019. Speaking of Busch, he was Truex’s chief challenger on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway but was ultimately no match. Before the series returns to oval track racing with a trip to Chicagoland Speedway, here are five takeaways from Sunday’s road course showdown in the Wine Country. By Ja red Turner

Martin Truex Jr. Is NASCAR’s New King Of The Road
I
t has been quite a few years since one driver was the prohibitive favorite each and every time NASCAR’s premier series ventured to a road course. But after winning on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, Martin Truex Jr. is unequivocally that driver. Truex, whose Toyota led 59 of 90 laps, has now won both of the past two races and three of the past seven races at the winding circuit in Northern California’s Wine Country. Meanwhile, Truex has finished second and first, respectively, in the past two races at Watkins Glen International — a 2.45-mile road course in upstate New York. If that’s not enough to prove Truex’s road racing prowess, consider that he was out front coming to the checkered flag in last fall’s inaugural race on the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL when contact with Jimmie Johnson took both drivers out of contention. Looking for NASCAR’s top road racer today? Look to Truex.

Matt DiBenedetto Is The Underdog Who Can
D
riving for one of the true underdog teams in the sport, Matt DiBenedetto defied all odds at Sonoma Raceway by doing what drivers with back marker teams can rarely do these days — finish in the top five. DiBenedetto, who has spent his entire career to date toiling away in less-than-subpar equipment, finished a career-best fourth in a race otherwise dominated by a familiar cast of frontrunners. The Grass Valley, California native was emotional during his post-race interviews, fighting back tears as he reminisced on the ups and downs of his career. “I’m just so lucky to be doing this,” said DiBenedetto, who had recorded four top-10 finishes but no top fives in his first 155 NASCAR premier series starts. “My path to get here has been so out of the ordinary and old-school, and I’m so thankful. I can’t tell you how many people took a chance on me to have this opportunity.”

There’s No Letup In Joe Gibbs Racing
T
en wins in 16 races. Three drivers in the top six of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series standings. A combined total of 1,456 laps led among four drivers. Yes, 2019 has been the season of Joe Gibbs Racing — starting with Denny Hamlin’s emotional victory in the seasonopening Daytona 500 and continuing through Sunday’s event on the Sonoma Raceway road course where Martin Truex Jr. scored a commanding victory and JGR drivers took three of the top five finishing positions and four of the top eight. The Sonoma race might have been the company’s most impressive overall performance yet, as JGR drivers Truex and Kyle Busch finished 1-2 on a day when everyone else appeared to be racing for no better than third place. While Team Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski have been JGR’s toughest challengers all season, it’s obvious at this point that the 2019 championship is JGR’s to lose.

DW Went Out In Style
F
rom cardboard signs held in the air by fans, to multiple throwback paint schemes designed in his honor, Darrell Waltrip enjoyed quite the going away party at Sonoma Raceway as the legendary driver and 19-year veteran of the FOX NASCAR broadcast booth signed off one final time. Waltrip, or, DW — as he’s known to most fans of the sport — was predictably emotional during his last telecast, which, of course, included him bellowing his trademark “Boogity, boogity, boogity, let’s go racing, boys!” as the field took the green flag. Before the broadcast ended, Waltrip reflected on his nearly two decades in the booth, hugged his fellow announcers — Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Jeff Gordon — and talked about what they meant to him. Waltrip turned especially emotional in recalling how he and Gordon, a fellow driving legend, had become closer during their time together as colleagues after initially not always seeing eye to eye.

It’s Shaping Up To Be A TwoHorse Championship Race
T
wo drivers have combined to win exactly half of the first 16 races of the season. Those two drivers — Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. — also have a Monster Energy Series-high four wins apiece and together have led a total of just under 1,300 laps this season. Sunday’s race at Sonoma was more of the same, as Truex and Busch were handsdown the class of the field and ultimately were running far ahead of everyone else at the finish. As the 2019 campaign rolls on, it’s looking more and more like it could be the two JGR teammates ultimately battling it out for the championship. To suggest the teammates even have a budding rivalry would be 100 percent fair. “I hate him,” Busch jokingly quipped after Sunday’s race, referring to Truex. Said Truex of his yearlong battle with Busch: “I think it’s a good rivalry.”

Like Parity? The 2019 Season Hasn’t Been For You By Ja red Turner
A
s TV coverage of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season shifts hands from FOX to NBC with the running of next weekend’s race at Chicagoland Speedway, now seems like as good of a time as any to reflect on what’s happened so far this year. More than anything, this season has been the story of Joe Gibbs Racing’s dominance and Team Penske’s somewhat successful attempts to keep JGR from getting further and further ahead of the rest of the competition. Of the six races not won by JGR drivers, five have belonged to Team Penske. The only non-JGR or non-Team Penske winner so far in 2019 has been Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott (Talladega). The other 15 winner’s trophies have been divvied up among five drivers: JGR’s Kyle Busch (four wins), JGR’s Martin Truex Jr. (four wins), JGR’s Denny Hamlin (two wins), Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski (three wins) and Team Penske’s Joey Logano (two wins). I don’t know if you’re keeping score or if you know your NASCAR history, but six different winners over 16 races is not a lot of parity.
0 1 8
Sonoma REARview: June 24, 2019
In fact, it’s about the worst example of parity I can remember there being in a long time, aside from last season, when the trio of Busch, Truex and Kevin Harvick pretty much beat everybody’s butts all season up until the very end, when Logano emerged out of the shadows to capture the title in the winnertake-all season finale. Let’s hope the NBC portion of the 2019 season features some new faces in Victory Lane and several more organizations represented in the Winner’s Circle (where you at, Stewart-Haas Racing, Richard Childress Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing?) After all, a little parity has a tendency to go a long way when it comes to keeping people engaged and entertained.

eNASCAR Takes on Sonoma Only Michael Conti Makes it Unscathed By M atteo M a rcheschi

n Tuesday night, June 11th, the NASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the twists and turns of northern California’s Sonoma Raceway. It’s safe to say Joe Gibbs Racing driver Bobby Zalenski was the favorite coming in, having won the last two races at Sonoma, and winning the pole helped solidify that. Once the green flag flew, a win for anyone but Zalenski became all but impossible. Zalenski led all

55 laps in the event, and beat second-place Michael Conti of JR Motorsports by over eight seconds. This was partially assisted by the fact that there are no full-course yellows at road courses in iRacing. As a result, only 14 of the 39 entrees finished on the lead lap, despite the 2+ mile length of Sonoma. Also notable was the fact that both Ray Alfalla and Matt Bussa entered, but did not log a single lap in the race. Flipsid3 Tactics ended the event with

NASCAR eSports both of its drivers disconnected. Timmy Hill only completed 13 laps before his day came to an end in 37th. Points leader Michael Luza ended the day in 33rd place, 11 laps off the pace. While Sonoma is the only traditional road course on the schedule, the Roval at Charlotte serves as the third round of the playoffs, so Flipsid3 better get their road racing ducks in a row by the time September rolls around. While the race was not very closely contested up front, plenty of beating and banging took place throughout the field.
So much so, in fact, that only a single driver finished the race incident-free: second-place Michael Conti. Even Zalenski went off the track once, but not Conti. Even more shocking than Conti’s cleanliness may be the driver who accumulated the most incident points on the day: none other than points leader Michael Luza, with a startling 20 incident points. The Peak Series is back on track this Tuesday at 9 PM eastern time at Chicagoland Speedway. The race can be seen live on iRacing’s Twitch Channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

otorsports Safety Group is a collaboration of innovators in the sport who are determined to improve the safety of racing. MSG shares tips for race car drivers to help avoid injuries during races and practice sessions. Acknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. For Dr. Cormier’s most recent side project, he co-authored an autobiography – with the help of acclaimed author Clifton Lambreth. The book, “Challenges: The Inspiring Story of Dr. Jason Cormier” shares the brain surgeon’s journey overcoming significant obstacles to achieve extraordinary things. “I had no intention of doing a book,” Cormier said. “I’m a private person, and the last thing I wanted to do was wallow in the embarrassment of some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life. People were pushing me to share my life experiences because there are many others currently suffering through some of the same things. My hope is that people might draw from

this reservoir of experiences so as to foster more positive solutions in confronting the difficult challenges in their lives.” Cormier, along three other siblings, was raised by a single mother who also served as a high school and college educator. His father was absent throughout his childhood, and money was tight for the Cormier family in Lafayette, La. “My dad was absent and not the best role model,” Cormier said. “He battled with alcoholism, and that was something we had to deal
health and wellness with in a single-parent home. Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about
his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”
The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Ja red Turner
L
ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
