NASCAR’s Massive 2020 Schedule Revamp - What Happened?
I

Now, these changes were not unforeseen. NASCAR fans have been asking for all manner of schedule and lineup changes for the last few years, whether looking for more short tracks in the series, changing the format of points and the playoffs, and even just moving around the circuit order. NASCAR has finally responded to the fan

retooled NASCAR Playoffs schedule is among the highlights of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series schedule release, with changes to all three elimination races serving as the capstone of a rebuilt postseason. Bristol Motor Speedway, the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course and Martinsville Speedway — tracks known for producing plenty of fireworks, flared tempers and dented sheet metal — will serve as hosts for the final events in the Round of 16, Round of 12 and Round of 8, respectively. Regular season changes There will be two NASCAR Cup Series races on consecutive days at Pocono Raceway, the first a Saturday affair and the second occurring in the track’s standard Sunday slot. The ability for drivers to clinch Playoffs spots and pad their lead in the standings — or lose significant ground — never has been higher at the 2.5-mile, three-turn track. Chicagoland Speedway remains the first race for NBC Sports

Group, but the 1.5-mile facility will host that event on Father’s Day, one week after FOX signs off from Sonoma. Father’s Day has been an open NASCAR Cup Series race day recently, but drivers are sure to place an even greater emphasis on winning with their kids in tow and watching. Another tradition continues with the passing of the baton from one iconic race track to another during the July 4th weekend. Indianapolis Motor Speedway moves to the cornerstone spot on the NASCAR schedule, which previously was occupied by Daytona International Speedway. Daytona will instead host the regular-season finale on Aug. 29. Round of 16 The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs open Sept. 6 at historic Darlington Raceway, which returns to the postseason for the first time since 2004. must-watch events of the year gets some added mojo, turning the crown jewel Southern 500 into a postseason event. From there, the series heads to Richmond Raceway for a Saturday night race. It will be Richmond’s third consecutive year hosting a playoff race. This round ends under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway as the muchanticipated Bristol Night Race moves from its historic August date to this high-stakes elimination position, where four drivers will leave Thunder Valley out of the postseason. The necessity of tight racing, plus the opportunity to move cars out of the way on the highbanked, .533-mile oval, should make for an explosive end to the opening round. 0 0 8
ROUND OF 12 Las Vegas Motor Speedway remains in the Playoffs, just in a new spot. Instead of serving as the opening race for the entire postseason, Sin City will play host to the Round of 12 opener. Moving this postseason race three weeks later should make for a cooler race weekend in Las Vegas as well. Always unpredictable Talladega Superspeedway follows Las Vegas, keeping its middle spot in the Round of 12. The Charlotte road course, which hosted a dramatic debut with an all-timer of a finish in 2018, closes the Round of 12. As the elimination race in the Round of 16 last year, the highstakes atmosphere led to a finish that saw Jimmie Johnson overdrive the final turn, taking

ROUND OF 8 For the first time in the history of the elimination-style format, Kansas Speedway moves to the Round of 8, taking the opening spot in the threerace series. The opener, in fact, takes place at Kansas. Texas Motor Speedway keeps its same spot on the slate as the middle race in the Round of 8. That gives the Round of 8 two consecutive 1.5-mile tracks. Martinsville Speedway, which has hosted some of the most memorable moments in NASCAR Playoffs history, is the Round of 8 elimination race. Yes, the oldest track on the NASCAR circuit — which in recent years has given us “We’re going to Homestead!” and “He ain’t winning the damn war” — moves to the all-important final race before the Championship 4 field is set for the Championship Race in the desert.

Another Kevin Harvick Win At Texas
K
evin Harvick hasn’t won yet in 2019, but he’s captured two of the past three Monster Energy Series races at Texas, giving him reason to be confident heading to the 1.5-mile track, which he calls “very unique and different.” … “You have to make your car turn well and not be too loose into the corner of Turn 1, and it has to turn well in the middle of the corner in order to carry speed off; otherwise you’re just lugging up off the corner,” Harvick said. “As you get to turns 3 and 4, it’s about letting off the throttle halfway and hoping you can put it right back down. There are already a few bumps in the corner that, when you’re trying to maintain speed, it either hits the splitter or bounces a little bit. That end of the racetrack has always been very fast through turns 3 and 4.”

Everyone Still Chasing Team Penske & JGR
I
n combining to win the first six races of the 2019 Monster Energy Series season, Team Penske and Joe Gibbs Racing wasted no time establishing themselves as the organizations to beat this year. Aric Almirola, a driver for rival organization Stewart-Haas Racing, attributes the success of Team Penske and JGR to those organizations being quicker than anyone else to adapt to the new 2019 aerodynamics page. “I think what we’ve seen so far is very typical of what happens in our sport,” Almirola said. “There’s rule changes, and when we have those rule changes, there are a couple of teams that figure it out faster than anybody else, and they clearly separate themselves, and I think with what you’ve seen at the beginning of the year, Penske and Gibbs have done that. They’ve figured it out, and they’ve separated themselves. It’s the same cars contending to win the races week in and week out at every track. It doesn’t matter.”

T
en days removed from an all-out qualifying debacle at Auto Club Speedway, NASCAR announced procedural changes ahead of this weekend’s race in Texas. Instead of the 12 drivers who reach the final round of qualifying being able to fall back on their best time from the second round if they fail to record a timed lap in Q3, drivers who don’t post a time in Q3 will have to start at the back of the field. Thanks to the new higher downforce, lower horsepower aerodynamics package put in place this season, drivers have become prone to waiting until the waning moments of Q3 to make a qualifying attempt, in hopes of catching a draft from another car and running faster. But with the new rules in place for Texas, don’t expect anyone to risk starting at the back for the possibility of gaining a few spots in Q3.

Frustrated Drivers In Need Of A Breakout Performance
W
hile several drivers have enjoyed a notably fast start to 2019, others have started out the year notably poor. Among the drivers struggling to find a lot of speed are seven-time Monster Energy Series champion Jimmie Johnson (no top-five finishes in six starts), Kyle Larson (no top fives), Alex Bowman (no top 10s), Clint Bowyer (one top five) and Erik Jones (one top five). All five made the Monster Energy Series playoffs in 2018, with Bowyer and Jones also going to Victory Lane. Jones (fourth) and Larson (fifth) finished in the top five at Texas last fall, so this weekend theoretically provides a good opportunity for them to get their seasons pointed in the right direction. Johnson is a seven-time winner at Texas but hasn’t prevailed at the 1.5-mile track since the spring of 2017, and his last three starts in the Lone Star State have produced nary a top-10 finish.

Fast Speeds & Limited Passing Opportunities
T
hey say everything’s bigger in Texas. That, of course, includes the speeds at Texas Motor Speedway — one of the fastest tracks on the Monster Energy Series tour. TMS has been especially fast since officials had the 1.5-mile, high-banked track repaved ahead of the spring 2017 race weekend. While speeds may be a bit slower this weekend than in the past couple of trips to Texas due to the horsepower reduction in the 2019 rules package, TMS will still produce faster speeds than most tracks where NASCAR’s top division competes this year. Passing opportunities could be limited, however. “That place has always been fast, and it’s always been one-groovish around the bottom and, so far, it’s kind of what we’ve got with the repave,” Kyle Busch said. “Obviously, you hope that with time and age and the asphalt surface, that it gets better and more racey. Not sure we’re really there yet.”

By Jared Turner ▶▶ Kevin harvick. Kevin Harvick has been surprisingly mediocre out of the gate in 2019, but don’t be surprised if that all changes this weekend at Texas — a track where he’s won two of the past three races and has rang up nine consecutive top-10 finishes, including seven top fives. ▶▶ Kyle Busch. Sandwiched in between Kevin Harvick’s two recent wins at Texas was a win by Kyle Busch, who has prevailed three times in the Lone Star State, with all of his wins coming since 2013. Busch, of course, has been fast pretty much everywhere so far in 2019 and is the series points leader. ▶▶ Ryan Blaney. Ryan Blaney led 40 laps on the way to a runnerup finish at Texas last fall and is now riding the momentum of three consecutive top-five finishes recorded over the past three weekends at Phoenix, Fontana and Martinsville, respectively. ▶▶ Brad Keselowski. Brad Keselowski punished the field last weekend at Martinsville, leading 446 of 500 laps on the way to his second victory in the season’s first six races. The Team Penske driver has been surprisingly winless in 21 starts at Texas, the track where he memorably tussled with Jeff Gordon in the fall of 2014. ▶▶ Denny hamlin. In five races since opening the season with a victory in the Daytona 500, Denny Hamlin has finished no worse than 11th. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver hasn’t won at Texas before or since sweeping the track’s spring and fall 2010 races, but he is second in points after six races this year.

n May 31, 2015, Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, won the FedEx 400 Benefitting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway. It was his 74th of 83 career victories during his 19-year career. The El Cajun, Calif., native led only 23 of the 405-lap race extended due to a late-race caution. Johnson sealed the deal by taking the lead from Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 StewartHaas Racing Chevrolet, on lap 383 and held it the rest of the way. The key to winning came on old cold tires when other leaders made late race pit stops. Johnson wasted no time moving toward the front after a mid-pack qualifying attempt two days earlier

but still called it a tough day. Racing among cars just as strong as his own made for a long afternoon. “We went from 14th to fifth in pretty quick order,” Johnson said. “Just the top five cars were so equal that you couldn’t pass. You really just could not get by somebody. “I really felt like it was going to be a game of inches today, and as the race progressed, my team did a great job on pit road … it all came together for us very late in the race, but once we had our opportunity, we took advantage of it and got our 10th win here.”

s a rookie in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, 28-year-old Ryan Preece is writing the latest chapter of his personal Cinderella story. The native of Hartford, Connecticut, honed his racing skills in a Midget on the paved tracks of the Northeast before graduating to the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, where he earned the 2013 series championship. In 2016, Preece assembled enough sponsorship to run the full NASCAR Xfinity Series with a mid-pack team, but the effort did nothing to advance his career. “There were a lot of nights I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know what my future was going to be,” Preece said. “I didn’t know if I could even make it to this level (the NASCAR Cup Series). I was going to try though. I was going to try like hell.” Preece regrouped and took his limited sponsorship to Joe Gibbs Racing for four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts in 2017. He recorded a victory, a pole and four top-10 finishes and was

Another successful campaign, including a second NASCAR Xfinity Series victory, in 15 starts for JGR during 2018 resulted in Preece securing the opportunity of which he had long dreamed. msg: making racing safer TM
By dan guttenplan
A
cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One health issue that affects NASCAR racecar drivers and fans alike is neck and back pain. Cormier shared some preventative measures one can take to help avoid lower back pain. “Outside of the red flags – like a fever, weight loss that is not explained by a change in diet, suspicion of cancers, long-term steroid use, or a weak immune system – we can look at simple things to prevent lower back pain,” Cormier said. “We’ll take a look at improving the diet, weight loss, smoking habits and exercise.”
0 4 0
Texas PReview: MARCH 28, 2019
A patient can also strengthen his or her core to help prevent lower back pain. Improving one’s range of motion and maintaining an active lifestyle are also helpful preventative measures. In the event that a patient is already affected by lower back pain, Cormier recommends he or she take an anti-inflammatory, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol – if the patient has been cleared by a doctor. Avoiding carrying large bags, briefcases and purses can also limit the stress on a person’s back.
health and wellness “Watch your posture,” Cormier said. “Make sure you’re not overloading your back. Consider switching to a briefcase or bag on wheels.” One of the most common causes of upper back and neck pain in this day and age is poor posture when sending text messages and looking down at smart phones. Writing for extended periods of time without stretching your neck is another common cause. “It’s the result of constantly looking down at a computer or phone,” Cormier said. “It’s important to think about posture.” Neck trauma is a more serious issue that can be managed non-surgically with traction
therapy, physical therapy or an interventional procedure, depending on the results of one’s MRI. Racecar drivers also are at risk of suffering compression fractures. Austin Therriault and Aric Almirola have both suffered those types of injuries in the recent past. “When you’re driving at high speeds, the spine absorbs the ‘G’ forces of the wreck, which predisposes one to the possibility of spinal fractures,” Cormier said. “Protect your body by consistently exercising for a few minutes three to four times weekly, and maintain a healthy life style, and your body will be significantly optimized to endure the physical challenges ahead.”
Introducing Brain Armor new product that excites Cormier in terms of improving brain function is the Brain Armor nutritional supplement. The product is the work of Dr. Julian Bailes, a recognized leader in the field of neurosurgery and the impact of brain injury on brain function. The supplement includes Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which help the human brain possess the ability to grow new nerve cells, or neurons. Cormier said that patients tested after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty

Acids were less likely to incur brain-related injuries. Also, patients that suffered brain-related injuries were more likely to recover after 30 days of ingesting Omega-3 Fatty Acids. “That component of the nervous system is huge,” Cormier said. “We found that people who are rich
Texas PReview: MARCH 28, 2019
in DHA and EPA levels are more protected with regard to brain function. That drew me in. If we pursue that in racecar drivers, we can protect them with a supplement like Brain Armor that includes fish oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.” Fish oils are also available for purchase over the counter. Cormier said the only downside of ingesting fish oil is that of its blood thinning properties. “Other than that, we haven’t seen any downside,” Cormier said. Find out more at brain-armor.com.

t’s been a season unlike any other for Michael Annett. The JR Motorsports driver picked up his first victory in the season opener at Daytona. Locked into the playoffs, crew chief Travis Mack and he are mixing things up and it’s working. ▶▶ What’s it like to know you’re locked into the playoffs? We’ve had two dismal years of not being where we want to be running. To know we’re locked in right now, we’re running really strong and getting stage points, we can put ourselves in different situations. We can go for those bonus points and carry them into the playoffs. It’s crazy to think a year ago, if we had a chance to get a top five, we’d be ecstatic. Now, we know we have top-five cars. I’m not excited about top 10s anymore. I’m excited about going for a championship. ▶▶ What’s the biggest difference in your team this year? JR Motorsports has always given me really good equipment. Putting me with a guy like Travis gives me all of the confidence in the world, and it’s contagious. When you see results and it all comes to fruition, it’s easy to buy in. Everybody has the same goal and we’re attaining it. You just want to do your part. It’s a really cool deal to be a part of. I’m just trying to hold up my end.”

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

NASCAR PETS

ohn Hunter Nemechek’s house could be likened to an animal farm these days. A pet lover from childhood, the now 21-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver is the owner and caretaker of three rambunctious but friendly dogs: a 3-year-old Goldendoodle named Layla, a 3-year-old Charcoal Lab named Tucker and a 1-year-old Black Lab named Nyx. With his trio of furry friends to care for, Nemechek is never concerned about boredom. “Everyone jokes around and sends me pictures with a bunch of puppies running into a house and stuff like that,” he said. “I feel like that’s

what I have right now with these three. They’re definitely a handful, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” While Nemechek is still relatively new to life with three dogs, his passion for pets is nothing new. “I’ve always had a love for animals,” said the son of longtime NASCAR Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek. “We used to own a horse farm. So I was around horses, but my passion has always been for dogs. They’re a man’s best friend. Being able to walk in the door to them, hang out with them and hug them and play with them, it’s a lot of fun.”
