JIMMIE JOHNSON MAY NOT RETIRE IN 2020? In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the big NASCAR storylines leading up to this week’s race. And yes, believe it or not, the Cup season might be on hold, but the news is still happening, and the racing action is still on! The race this weekend will be part of the NASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, a continuation of the esports action we saw 0 0 4

last weekend. This week, the series will be broadcast on FOX, in addition to FS1, and Eric has the details on how the drivers are getting ready. And don’t think we’re forgetting the headline. That’s right, Jimmie Johnson spoke to a fan this week about possible changes to his retirement plans. What’s happening? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

FUTURE STARS WHO AREN’T IN THE CUP SERIES As NASCAR continues to hibernate as a precautionary measure to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s still plenty to discuss. One topic worthy of serious chatter and contemplation is the topic of drivers currently in other series who seem most capable of moving up to the NASCAR Cup Series in the relatively near future. While not everyone will agree with these choices, the following is a list of five drivers who aren’t in the NASCAR Cup Series right now but will be among the biggest stars of tomorrow. JORDAN ANDERSON

I

f you like underdogs and overcomers, then Jordan Anderson is your man. One of the few owner-drivers in NASCAR today, Anderson is a rare breed in a sport where most drivers are simply unable to compete without the support of at least several major corporate sponsors. Anderson, who does have important backing from K-Seal and some other partners, began 2020 with a bang by coming home second to Grant Enfinger in a photo finish at Daytona International Speedway where the two trucks took the checkered flag all of one one-hundredth of a second apart. Anderson, 28, is actually in his third season of full-time truck competition, having scraped up enough to cash to make it to the track each weekend in each of the last two seasons. While Anderson might not be one of NASCAR’s more well-known young talents, his potential is unlimited, and ultimately moving to the NASCAR Cup Series is certainly an attainable goal.

HAILIE DEEGAN

A

fter making NASCAR history in 2018 when she became the first female driver to win a race in what is now known as the ARCA Menards Series West (formerly K&N Pro Series West), Hailie Deegan looked a lot like someone who could become NASCAR’s next woman phenom. Since then, she’s done nothing to change that perception. On the heels of an impressive 2019 highlighted by two wins in what was then K&N West, Deegan signed a development contract to drive with Ford Performance in 2020. The now-18-year-old is scheduled to compete in multiple series with Ford as part of its Driver Development program. Those series include IMSA and ARCA. “Hailie has shown in her brief time behind the wheel of a stock car that she’s got what it takes to be successful,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We feel this year will serve as a good foundation for what lies ahead.”

TODD GILLILAND

I

n his third season as a full-time or mostly full-time NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series driver, Todd Gilliland has both the talent and the pedigree to make it far in the sport. The son of former NASCAR Cup Series driver David Gilliland, Todd posted his first career truck victory last season in the fall at Martinsville Speedway and recorded an average race finish of 10.6. Gilliland also captured a pole in each of the last two truck seasons. After competing for Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2019, Gilliland joined Front Row Motorsports for the 2020 season as the organization expanded its operations to include a truck series team. While Gilliland, who doesn’t turn 20 until May 15, still has a fair amount to prove, there’s no denying the fact that the youngster from Sherrills, Ford, North Carolina possesses the skills and background to secure a Cup Series ride in the not-too-distant future.

2

ROSS CHASTAIN

T

he inclusion of Ross Chastain on this list comes with an asterisk since Chastain is technically already competing in the NASCAR Cup Series — as a substitute driver for Ryan Newman until Newman is medically cleared to return. There’s a good reason that Chastain was tabbed to sub for Newman, however; he’s a more-than-capable fill-in. A watermelon farmer when he’s not racing, Chastain turned a lot of heads for the first time last season by seemingly coming out of nowhere to win three truck races, reach the Championship 4 and finish second in the standings. That success was enough to land Chastain a full-time Xfinity Series ride for 2020 and an unexpected opportunity to show what he can do in a Cup Series car that is fielded by a competitive organization — Roush Fenway Racing. Chastain has actually run the majority of the Cup schedule the last two seasons with lower-level teams, but he wasn’t planning to make more than cameo Cup appearances in 2020.

HARRISON BURTON

T

he son of a NASCAR veteran turned NASCAR on NBC announcer, Harrison Burton tops the list of youngsters who are likely to be the face of the sport in the years to come. Harrison — whose father, Jeff, is revered by virtually everyone in the sport as an authoritative figure who could probably even have a career in politics — is a chip off the old block if there ever was one. Along with being well-spoken behind a microphone, Harrison knows how to wheel a race car and looks to possess a level of talent comparable to or even exceeding that of his father, who recorded 21 NASCAR premier series victories. Harrison needed just 12 starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series to post his first Xfinity win, which came in March at Auto Club Speedway. With NASCAR currently on a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Harrison is atop the Xfinity standings after scoring a top-five finish in each of the season’s first four races.

■■ Jimmie Johnson earned the lone road course victory of his career in 2010 at Sonoma Raceway.

A RARE ROAD COURSE WIN FOR JJ BY JA RED TURNER

B

y all accounts, road courses have not been Jimmie Johnson’s strength over the years. If in doubt, just consider his numbers: one victory in 38 career road-course starts. It’s no wonder, then, that Johnson’s lone road course victory — which he recorded at Sonoma Raceway in his home state of California on June 20, 2010 — will go down as one of the now-seventime NASCAR Cup Series champion’s most cherished triumphs. In fact, Johnson’s breakthrough in the Wine Country was a burden lifted from the shoulders of not only him but his entire No. 48 team led by crew chief Chad Knaus. “I love road course racing. I always have,” said Johnson, a native of El Cajon, California. “I grew up racing off-road trucks; they were on road courses with jumps. I a name for myself in that style of racing. To come into the Cup Series and not have success early irritated me. For Chad, if there’s a track on the schedule — doesn’t matter what design it is — that’s our weak spot, he’s gonna make it better. “So we kind of got in this routine of road course, road course,

road course. That’s why winning is so special to us.” One of the most gratifying aspects Johnson’s victory at Sonoma was the fact he didn’t just win; he prevailed in style, leading 55 of 110 laps and taking the checkered flag by a comfortable 3.105 seconds over road racing ace Robby Gordon. “We made good adjustments throughout Friday and Saturday,” Johnson said. “I think we kind of found our direction early in the weekend. Just made small changes and kept making it a little bit better. I would drive the car a little different. Just on and on we went. “We led a lot of laps, which was really nice to do. Had to make some good passes at times. I feel like it was a complete day, a complete weekend.”

Throughout the NASCAR season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with ARCA West Series and super late model competitor Brittney Zamora.

■■ Brittany Zamora, ARCA West Series driver

▶  AFTER RACING FULL-TIME IN THE ARCA WEST SERIES LAST YEAR, HOW EXCITED ARE YOU FOR THIS SEASON? “I couldn’t be more ready and excited to hit the track. I have a full-time super late model schedule and an ARCA West Series race with Jefferson Racing that’s currently a one-race deal. We are working on extending it into a multi-race partnership. We plan to run at Irwindale Speedway in the ARCA West Series, a track I feel confident about and a team I can rely on and trust. We have a lot on the line, and I am holding high expectations for myself.” ▶  RECENTLY, YOU CREATED YOUR FOUNDATION CALLED PIT ROAD PALS. HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT, AND HOW CAN FANS HELP? “Creating my foundation Pit Road Pals has been a lot of fun. I’ve always had a soft spot for animals, and I have two rescue dogs at my home. Knowing that a large percentage of NASCAR fans had or currently have a rescue animal, it was the perfect match. At each town and track that I visit this year, I help advocate for an animal at a local shelter that needs a little extra help on getting in the spotlight to help find their forever home. “So far, two of the three dogs, all from a different racetrack town, have been rescued. Pit Road Pals has helped with their needs. If fans would like to help, we allow gift card donations to take toys, treats and food to shelters that I visit and donations to cover adoption fees. Another great way to help is to share @ PitRoadPals posts on social media platforms for awareness.”

NASCAR PETS

THE FAST & THE FURRY NATALIE DECKER’S LOVE FOR ANIMALS BY JA RED TURNER

N

atalie Decker couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to pursue her dreams as a NASCAR driver. Competing for a second season in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, Decker is able to travel the country and see lots of great people and places while participating in a sport she truly loves. Being at the track and out on the road is especially enjoyable thanks to some furry companions she brings along. Those companions are a mixed greyhound dog named Cash, an aging cat appropriately named NASCAR, and two dogs – a blackand-brown beagle named Hoosier (after the tire brand) and a white beagle named Camber (after the tilt of a race car wheel). Cash lives with Decker and her boyfriend in Charlotte, North Carolina, while the other pets reside with her parents at their more pet-friendly estate in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Decker adores all of the animals as if they were her own, however. In fact, the three animals that don’t live with Decker travel with her parents in their motor home to all of her races and are reunited with Cash on

weekends at the track. “They’re so special, and my mom is such a dog person,” Decker said. “I think one of her dreams is to have a beagle farm and have just a bunch of beagles everywhere. My mom loves traveling with them, and it’s great because she and my dad will bring them to all the races and I get to see them every weekend.” When it came time for Decker and her boyfriend to search for a dog of their own, Cash was the perfect fit. From the moment they laid eyes on this sweet brown-and-white canine at a humane society near their North Carolina home, they knew he was the pet for them. “When we got there, all the dogs were barking but Cash. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. I need this dog,’” Decker said. “I don’t like really ‘barky,’ loud dogs. I was like, ‘He doesn’t bark. We need him.’ But we were leaving for the Michigan race so we filled out all the paperwork and got approved to adopt the dog, but we had to wait until we came home to get him and pray that he would still be there. He was still there, so it was totally meant to be to adopt him.”

NASCAR RELEASE ■■ Kevin Harvick has long been in favor of schedule changes in NASCAR.

BRAVE NEW SCHEDULE NECESSITY BRINGS OPPORTUNITY WHEN NASCAR RACING RETURNS

W

ords matter. For example, there’s a big difference between “postponed” and “canceled”. Postponed means to defer, or to put off until a later time. Canceled, meanwhile, means to make void, revoke or annul. NASCAR has been on hiatus since the coronavirus outbreak suspended the entire sports industry, but its races have only been postponed, which means all will eventually happen. But for an entity that lays claim to the longest season in all of professional sports – one that spans 36 point-paying races across 10 months from early February to November – rescheduling those postponed races will require some creative thinking.

0 2 6

Midweek shows? Why not? Doubleheaders? Sure. In fact, NASCAR has performed the former numerous times with the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Since its inception in 2013, the Truck Series race at Eldora has owned a midweek date in July. This year’s race is slated for Thursday, July 30. A doubleheader, meanwhile, is already slated for June 27-28 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway with the flagship NASCAR Cup Series. Certainly more midweek races and doubleheader weekends can satisfy the appetite of NASCAR fans hungry for real racing action, while also serving as the solution for rescheduling postponed events.

NASCAR RELEASE “If you’ve followed me, you know I’ve been pretty vocal about changing things up when it comes to the schedule,” said Kevin Harvick, the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion who drives the No. 4 Busch Light Ford Mustang for StewartHaas Racing (SHR). “When it comes to the 2021 schedule, NASCAR was already looking outside the box of things we can do differently. Out of necessity, how we configure race weekends and when we race will have to be figured out for when we get back to racing this year. It’s actually not a bad thing. Change is different, but it can be good, and we’ll have to think differently and be open-minded to what the rest of this year’s schedule ends up looking like.” Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang for SHR, is of the same mindset as Harvick. “NASCAR has been pretty straightforward in saying that all options are on the table, including midweek races and more doubleheaders. I’m even more intrigued to see what the TV viewership would look like. I think a midweek race would 0 2 8

■■ Aric Almirola is still in favor of trying to reschedule all of the postponed races.

resonate really well. Fans who worked all day can come home, eat dinner and then relax on the couch while we put on a show. I think it would be pretty cool for them.” While the Atlanta race weekend originally scheduled for March 13-15 ended up getting postponed, a revised schedule saw a Saturday-only timeline where the NASCAR Cup Series qualified at 11 a.m. and raced at 2 p.m. Practice was scuttled entirely in an effort to get everything completed in a single day. “I think as soon as everyone got to Atlanta and saw the schedule change, it raised an eyebrow,” said Clint Bowyer, driver of the No. 14 Rush Truck Centers/Mobil 1 Ford Mustang for SHR. “We said, ‘Hey, we can do these races in a day.’ I was fine with it. You know we need to do whatever we can do to put on a show for all these fans across the country. If all we have time for is a one-day show, then so be it. I think we can provide enough bang for their buck.” But what if a condensed schedule meant little to no practice? “Teams have a lot of data simulation to predict how their car is going drive and handle at a particular track, but it’s not always perfect,” Almirola said.

alter “Bud” Moore Jr., a beloved longtime team owner in NASCAR’s premier Cup series, has often been described as a simple old country mechanic that liked to make cars go fast. The 2011 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee was a fixture within NASCAR circles for over 50 years before his passing on No. 27, 2017. The son of a depression-era farmer and grocery store owner was a highly decorated World War II veteran with five Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. His passion for turning wrenches led to becoming a crewman and crew chief in NASCAR’s elite Strictly Stock circuit the year it was formed in 1949. Moore won NASCAR’s premier series title in 1957 as crew chief for driver Buck Baker. He formed Bud Moore Engineering in 1961 and won NASCAR championships with driver Joe Weatherly in 1962 and 1963. Sadly, Weatherly lost his life in a single-car accident on January 19, 1964, at the now defunct Riverside Raceway while driving for Moore. After Weatherly’s death, Moore continued his racing efforts with

drivers Darel Dieringer, Sammy Johns, Johnny Rutherford and Billy Wade in 1964. A second tragedy occurred for Moore on Jan. 5, 1965, when Wade lost his life at Daytona International Raceway while testing tires. The 34-year-old Texas native was considered an up-andcoming driver with great potential. Throughout the 1960s, Moore continued to field Fords in NASCAR competition as well as Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am Series, winning the 1970 championship with driver Parnelli Jones. Two years earlier in 1968, Tiny Lund also won the Grand American championship in Moore’s Mercury Cougars. A “Who’s Who” of American race drivers filled the seats of Moore’s Fords, such as Bobby Allison, Gordon Johncock, Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker, David Pearson, Benny Parsons, Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd, as well as many others. During 39 seasons in NASCAR’s premier division, Moore’s cars recorded 63 victories, 298 top-five finishes and 43 pole positions in 958 starts from 1961 to 2000. Allison, 1983 Cup Series champion and fellow 2011 NHOF inductee, recalled how Moore and his crew helped him to win his first of

three career Daytona 500s in 1978. “When Bud called me and asked me to drive for him in 1978, I was having some health issues,” Allison said. “I told him I wasn’t well (with stomach issues) but I would give my very best effort. Bud said, ‘That’s good enough for me.’ That attitude and faith in me really meant a great deal to me. “He told me I had a good reputation within the sport as far as being able to come up with chassis set-ups that worked and he allowed me to handle that aspect of it on our cars. Working for Bud was one that put me and everyone on the crew at ease. He was truly one of the very best team owners and friends I ever drove for.”

CREW MEMBER PROFILE

ORCHESTRATING A WINNING EFFORT HARRIS IS A MASTER AT TUNING RACE CARS BY BEN WHITE

B

lake Harris, car chief for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Martin Truex Jr., was no stranger to auto racing when he saw his first NASCAR race as a child in 2000 at Texas Motor Speedway. “I went there with my family,” Harris said. “My Dad raced in motocross when he was younger, stock cars through the 1980s, and sprint cars in the 1990s. My grandfather also raced so it’s kind of a family thing.” When Harris was 11, he began racing go-karts and transitioned to stock cars at age 14 on dirt before running asphalt Pro Trucks and Late Models until he graduated from high school. Equipped with experience in his Dad’s machine shop, Harris moved from Texas to North Carolina in 2005 in search of the right opportunity in NASCAR. While attending a trade school in Hickory, N.C., for six months, he learned of a job opening at Evernham Motorsports in their engine teardown room. Other assignments there included work in the chassis shop as well as in research and development. A move to Furniture Row Racing in 2011 set the stage for his present role with JGR. His side ventures as short track crew chief in North Carolina as well as Colorado helped to open the door to work as car chief at FRR for eight seasons before the team closed in 2018. “I’m on the traveling road crew with the No. 19 JGR team and assumed the car chief role that I had,” Harris said. “Our world on the Cup side means something new is always presented, such as tech-inspection processes and new aero package. So, we’re always trying to push the envelope. There’s something new all the time. I have to work in really tight time crunches, and it’s my job to orchestrate how we get everything done.”

When we came over as a group from Furniture Row to JGR, I think that quickly made us comfortable and on the same page as far as what we need to do. Everyone wants to win races. We always try to act in a positive manner, and that’s one thing that sets our team apart. - BLAKE HARRIS 0 3 6

A

s the racing world waits patiently to return safely to the track, Spencer Boyd has teamed up with RichMar Florist for an amazing on and off track partnership. During these times when most of us could use a pick-me-up, Boyd will be sending virtual flowers upon request. Spencer Boyd elaborated on the unique sponsorship, “There are medical workers that are on the front lines. Countless people in the travel and hospitality industry have

been laid off or furloughed. Grocery store workers and suppliers have been working around the clock to keep up with demand. These people and their families need a lot right now so maybe at least I can provide a smile by sending someone some flowers.” With a collection of photographs from RichMar’s extensive work over the years, Boyd will be taking shout out requests on social media and sending people pictures of tailored floral arrangements.

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAR. 27, 2020

RichMar Florist will also take center stage as a primary sponsor of the No. 20 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado when the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series is ready to return. ASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Rex White and current star Kevin Harvick both earned NASCAR Cup Series championships driving cars carrying No. 4. Harvick has utilized No. 4 since joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014. During that time, he’s made 26 visits to Victory Lane and claimed the title during his first season with the team. White, who made 233 series starts between 1956 and 1964, also won 26 races in car No. 4 and his championship came in 1960.

Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 4 in the NASCAR Cup Series have been to Victory Lane 71 times and have recorded 605 top-10 finishes in more than 1,650 starts. Frank Mundy was the first to use No. 4 when he drove a 1949 Cadillac in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race on June 19, 1949, at Charlotte Speedway, a threequarter-mile dirt track. Mundy finished 30th in the 33-car field after being eliminated by a broken right-front spindle. John Soares, a standout West Coast stock car racer, was the first driver to win a Cup Series race in car No. 4. That victory came on May 30, 1954, at Carrell Speedway in Gardena, California. During the 1990s, the No. 4 found considerable success with Morgan-McClure Motorsports as Sterling Marlin (6) and Ernie Irvan (7) won multiple races with the organization based in Abingdon, Virginia. ■■ 2020 – Kevin Harvick at Daytona (Getty Images photo)
