Four-Wide Pack Racing at the Coke 600 This weekend was one of the most jam-packed for motorsports, as fans were treated to thousands of miles of racing from Monaco, Indianapolis, and of course, Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. The grueling race pays tribute to NASCAR fundamentals - extreme endurance over 600 miles, incredible speeds, and the beautiful culture of NASCAR’s home town of Charlotte. How was the product on the track? In this episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us the through the highlights of the race. The new 2019 package was in the spotlight again, as Charlotte provided an all new venue to continue the incredible pack racing and overtaking we’ve seen at 1.5 mile tracks from Atlanta to Texas to Kansas. While

there still needs to be improvement for some tracks, particularly short tracks, Eric takes us through the successes so far. But the success might have been overshadowed by a controversy with some of the cars, particularly Toyotas. It seems that something was wrong with their right front tire setup, and many drivers, including winner Martin Truex, Jr., suffered damage from right front tire issues. Eric walks us it, and speculates on the causes. And finally, we have the Groovy Gauge, Eric’s patented race review system. How did the Coca-Cola 600 stack up on the gauge, where did it rank for the season? Watch the episode and find out!

artin Truex Jr. and Joe Gibbs Racing remain red-hot, but Team Penske continues to nip at JGR’s heels and Hendrick Motorsports is on a steady upward trajectory after a slow start to 2019. Before the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads north to Pocono Raceway this weekend, here are five big takeaways from Sunday’s super-entertaining Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Hendrick Motorsports Renaissance Continues

A

fter struggling out of the gate this season, Hendrick Motorsports has picked up the pace considerably in recent weeks. That renaissance continued in the Coca-Cola 600 as the organization placed all four of its drivers in the top nine. Leading the charge was fourthplace finisher Chase Elliott, who has jumped all the way to third in the standings and owns the lone Hendrick victory of the season. “We had a really solid car,” said Elliott after leading 43 laps. “It was a solid race all around. We just needed a little bit more there at the end and needed to not give up control to get to Martin (Truex Jr.) in those last 40 to 50 laps. We just needed to finish a little stronger. I think I have some work to do on my end to make sure I’m keeping up with the track, giving the right information, and not getting behind.”

The Underdogs Made Their Presence Felt

F

our drivers who don’t customarily run anywhere near the front enjoyed solid finishes in the 600. Fifth-place Ricky Stenhouse Jr., sixth-place Chris Buescher, 12th-place Corey LaJoie and 15th-place David Ragan all fared better in NASCAR’s longest race than virtually anyone predicted. For Stenhouse, Buescher and Ragan, it was their best finish of the year. For LaJoie, it was just his second top-15 finish in 13 starts this season. “We worked really hard after practice, making a lot of changes,” Buescher said. “It was just a great effort all around; the pit crew did a terrific job. We were able to come out there at the end and get an awesome finish. We have to keep improving a little bit, but it was a pretty awesome night.” Stenhouse likewise left Charlotte feeling good. “That’s something to build on,” he said. “All in all, a great night for us, a good points night, and we just have to keep this momentum going.”

All-Star Results Don’t Always Translate To The 600

O

f the drivers who finished in the top five in the Monster Energy Series All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, only two — Joey Logano (fourth and second-place, respectively) and Kyle Busch (third-place in both races) — backed that up with a top-five finish in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at the same track. The remaining top-five finishers from the All-Star Race — winner Kyle Larson, second-place Kevin Harvick and fifth-place Bubba Wallace — all endured disappointing outcomes in the 600, finishing 33rd, 10th and 25th, respectively. Meanwhile, 600 winner Martin Truex Jr. finished an uninspiring 10th among 19 drivers in the All-Star Race. The lesson here? A strong night in the AllStar Race doesn’t always translate into an equally strong performance in the 600. Conversely, a bad or mediocre night in the All-Star Race doesn’t preempt one from contending in the 600, despite the two events being held at the same track and under similar conditions, eight days apart.

Team Penske Is Keeping JGR In Its Sights

W

ith 13 races in the books and more than one-third of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season now complete, it’s obvious that Joe Gibbs Racing is the odds-on favorite to win the 2019 championship. Winners of eight races this season, JGR has flexed considerable muscle at all different types of tracks as three of the organization’s four drivers have gone to Victory Lane, each of them winning multiple races. But while JGR — with winning drivers Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin — is the clear frontrunner at this point in the season, the second-strongest organization is equally obvious. That would be Team Penske, winners of four of the five races not won by JGR. Team Penske’s top two drivers — Brad Keselowski (three wins) and Joey Logano (one win) — are fifth and second in the standings, respectively, and appear plenty capable of giving the JGR drivers a proverbial run for their money.

Martin Truex Jr. Has Found Another Gear

I

t took Martin Truex Jr. nine races to score his first victory with Joe Gibbs Racing, but since his big breakthrough at Richmond Raceway on April 13, the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champ and his team led by crew chief Cole Pearn have been darn near unstoppable. With a commanding triumph in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, Truex has now captured three of the past five points races to join teammate Kyle Busch and Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski as a winner of three races this season. Truex’s performance in the 600 was arguably his most impressive yet in 2019, as he won two of four stages and battled back from an early-race mishap to lead 116 of 400 laps. While Truex’s current hot streak isn’t guaranteed to continue into the summer, all signs point toward the driver of the No. 19 Toyota continuing to run up front and padding his win total.

Just Sayin’ Many of the cars at Charlotte had tribute paint schemes for Memorial Day.

Leave The Coca-Cola 600 Alone By Jared Turner

F

rom the introduction of stage racing, to the rollout of different rules packages, to the retirement of several of the sport’s biggest names over a 3-4 year span, NASCAR has experienced a number of major changes in relatively recent times. Likewise, over the past decade, more and more races have been trimmed from 500 miles to 400 miles in an effort to keep fans engaged and sponsors happy in this age of shrinking attention spans. Through all the upheaval that NASCAR has endured, one thing that has remained steady is the inclusion of a lone 600mile race held in NASCAR’s proverbial backyard of Charlotte Motor Speedway. A fixture of NASCAR’s premier series schedule since 1960, the Coca-Cola 600 has taken place on Memorial Day weekend for almost as long as its existence. While the trend toward shorter races is certainly popular among drivers and many fans, most competitors believe the 600 should be preserved for its uniqueness and fabled history. While 600 miles generally translate into about five of hours of

0 1 8

Charlotte Rearview: May 28, 2019

racing, not all of which has fans on the edge of their seats, the 600 remains the ultimate test of physical endurance and mental fortitude. Making this race even more special are the numerous tributes — both during pre-race ceremonies and during the race itself — to the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice of laying down their lives while serving in the United States military. This past Sunday’s 600-miler featured an especially gripping moment at the halfway point when all the cars came to pit road and drivers turned off their engines for a moment of silence in memory of the fallen heroes. Let’s hope the 600 remains unchanged as NASCAR inevitably continues to tweak plans and procedures in the coming months and years. Anything else would be a travesty of epic proportions.

PEAK Goes Patriotic for Charlotte’s Showdown Defending Champion Ray Alfalla’s Performance Still Suffers By M atteo M archeschi

O

n Tuesday, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series held its eighth round of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Many of the cars shed their usual looks in favor of patriotic schemes for Memorial Day, giving the field a distinctly American look. One of those with a patriotic scheme was pole winner Chris Shearburn of Letarte eSports. Shearburn started alongside G2 eSports driver Keegan Leahy, who sat second

0 2 2

Charlotte Rearview: May 28, 2019

in points entering Tuesday’s race. Despite this tough competition, Shearburn led all but four of the event’s first 110 laps. Unfortunately for him, though, there were still 90 laps remaining when he lost the lead. Shearburn fell as far as tenth, but recovered to finish third. Once Shearburn fell off the map, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Bobby Zalenski, RoushFenway Racing pilot Zack Novak, and points leader Ryan Michael Luza each let for a stretch,

NASCAR eSports but it was outside pole sitter Leahy who led the majority of those last 90 laps, including the all-important final one. Team Dillon eSports grabbed the runner-up spot with driver Blake Reynolds, while polesitter Shearburn outdueled points leader Luza. Burton Kligerman eSports driver Logan Clampitt rounded out the top five. With nearly half the season in the rearview mirror, close followers of the Peak Series may have noticed a distinct lack of a certain name: defending series champion Ray Alfalla. Alfalla has four championships and 23 race wins, and has competed in the series every season except the inaugural one in 2010. One look at the standings raises alarm bells further: Alfalla sits 21st in points. Not only does

this put him 128 points behind points leader Luza, it also puts him out of the series entirely, and back into the Pro Series, if the season ended today. Only the top 20 point finishers are guaranteed to compete in the series the following season, the rest are left to battle it out in the Pro Series over the Peak offseason. Alfalla and his Wood Brothers Racing team will have to get a move on to keep him in the top 20 in points, and have some serious work to do to get back in championship form. The Peak Series is back on track on Tuesday, June 11th, at 9 PM eastern time, at Sonoma Raceway. The race can be seen live on iRacing’s Twitch channel and the iRacing eSports Network YouTube channel.

ocelyn Fecteau graduated to the NASCAR Pinty’s Series in 2014 after competing in the Canadian Touring Car Championship. He is the driver and owner of the No. 77 Dodge Challenger fielded by JF77 Racing, and two of Fecteau’s top-three finishes have come in the popular event at Circuit de Trois-Rivieres. NASCAR Pole Position recently connected with Fecteau for a Q&A about his career and sponsorship opportunities.

Spotlight driver. My old man told me that very few people make a living out of it, but he pushed me to make it happen. I ended up going to school and working for a car manufacturer. Once I was out of school, I joined the pro series, but I was a late-comer. ▶▶ I guess I made the right choice going to school and getting a safe career. Right now, I can enjoy both of them. Would I want to do more racing? Yes, but it’s a challenge getting more seat time and sponsor money. Money is always the key. By having Mahindra ROXOR supporting me, it draws a line to help me fulfill my dream. ▶▶ What do you do for your other job? My dad worked at a car dealership all his life; and I studied at the Canadian Automotive Marketing Business School. I went to a program in Ontario and studied business management and automotive marketing. I spent 16 years with Toyota Canada. I’m no longer with them, but I’m with a company – OEM – that manufactures parts. We’re dealing with John Deere, Caterpillar – those types of businesses. This time of year, it’s difficult to juggle a professional career and professional racing. ▶▶ How did the partnership with Mahindra ROXOR come about? For me to be a representative for the company, I need to believe in it. It’s good to get money, but if I don’t believe in the product, I’ll say no to sponsors. It’s a hard thing to do, but if it’s not reaching your personal conviction, you should not be representing those people. ROXOR is the type of product I like – a multi-functional vehicle that can go off-road. 0 3 0

ROXOR’s Customer Service ocelyn Fecteau is quick to note ROXOR provides the highest level of customer service of any of his former sponsors. “Everywhere I go across North America, I see ROXOR there,” Fecteau said. “It could be an agriculture show, and I’ll go to their booth and see what people are saying. That gives me an ability to better represent the product in the market.” Fecteau rarely hears a complaint about the product. “I haven’t really heard anything negative,” he said. Fecteau has been impressed by ROXOR’s open line of communication with him since the company became his sponsor. “It’s a big company, but they’re very efficient,” Fecteau said. “They give good service. I call them, and they call right back.”

Not having the monetary means of what other kids in the neighborhood had, we’d eat certain meals and have to make it last for two or three days.” Cormier eventually graduated from high school, played college basketball at LSU, then played pro basketball before returning to school and receiving a medical degree. He has since worked his way to the top of the profession in neurosurgery. “All through life’s trials and tribulations, my close friends and family have always been my biggest supporters,” Cormier said. Cormier said the experience of writing about

his past unearthed some feelings that he’d compartmentalized for years. “You don’t really know how your parents’ divorce resonates deep inside you,” Cormier said. “In self-reflection, I don’t think I ever dealt with that correctly. I recall a lot of yelling and screaming in front of us, in addition to physical abuse. That became somewhat of the norm. I kept it hidden and tucked away. I have come to realize that this really wasn’t my fault. Hopefully this helps with issues that others currently deal with – like relationships and friendships. This is what I’ve come through. Things could always be so much worse.”

The Man Behind the Book Dr. Jason Cormier teaches both medical students and residents many innovative neurosurgical techniques including endoscopic pituitary and image-guided surgery, and minimally invasive complex spinal surgery. Dr. Cormier was named as one of “America’s Top Surgeons,” in the field of Neurosurgery, by the Consumers Research Council of America, Guide to America’s top surgeons and currently listed as one of the leading physicians in the world for Neurosurgery. Dr. Cormier is a member of the American Association of

Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His busy practice involves performing complex brain and spinal operations on patients from around the country that seek out his surgical acumen.

Cormier crafted his strategic partnership with the ARCA racing series’ safety initiative Program to form a “Motorsports Healthcare Education Plan” Medical car. Utilizing the strength and demographic reach of NASCAR and the ARCA racing series, their mission is to provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. T

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

NASCAR PETS

Jeffrey Earnhardt’s hunting buddy By Jared Turner

L

ike most NASCAR drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt finds his weekends consumed with racing. That means he typically has to carry out his passion for duck hunting during the week – when most of his friends are working and can’t go. The fourth-generation NASCAR driver has found the perfect duck-hunting companion, however, in Bama, an 80-pound, male Chesapeake Bay Retriever that he bought from a breeder near Nashville, Tennessee, two years ago. Bama – given his name because of Earnhardt’s affinity for University of Alabama football – was about nine weeks old and weighed only about 15 pounds when Earnhardt picked him up. “He grew quite fast,” Earnhardt said in late February. “He’s put on a little weight now that duck season’s over and we’re not hunting every morning. He’s packing on a few pounds.” When duck hunting season is in, Earnhardt has been amazed by how helpful Bama has been during their various adventures into nature. “It’s crazy to see the drive that these dogs have just to want

0 5 4

Charlotte Rearview: May 28, 2019

to please their owner, or their father, if you will,” Earnhardt said. “Just to see the drive a dog can have, to just want to go work, is pretty incredible.” But when Bama isn’t hunting ducks, he’s more of a “couch potato.” “He’s 80 pounds and thinks he weighs 20,” Earnhardt said. “He wants to lay on your lap 24/7, gets up on the couch and just puts all his weight up against you. He’s just a good companion, man. It’s a cool bond that you get with a dog like that. Literally, when they say man’s best friend, it’s a true statement, because even on your bad days, he finds a way to make them better.” Earnhardt grew up around various animals with his stepmother working as a veterinarian assistant, and he hopes to eventually purchase a motorhome so Bama can travel with him to the track on race weekends. “I don’t think they (NASCAR) would let him in the garage, but he would take up half the hauler if they did,” Earnhardt said with a laugh. “We probably wouldn’t get a whole lot of work done if he was around.”
