Project Description:
Empty-Nester married couple Bill Binger (German heritage) and Candi Peterson (Scandinavian heritage) are in their mid-50’s. Bill is a CEO for a Fortune 500 Company. He travels a lot for work. Candi is a Researcher and Psychologist, who works from home part time. They have a grown daughter who visits occasionally with her family (husband and 5-year-old son). They would like the style of their loft to represent their European background.
Design a bespoke interior that incorporates Universal Design strategies and encourage social and cultural gatherings. Problem Statement: Create fluidity throughout while incorporating existing columns, windows, and limited space configurations. Combine formal and informal areas that inspire conversation, and a sense of love. Quality, sustainable, and timeless FF&E selections. The duration to complete this project is one calendar year.
Building and Neighborhood: Location: 325 W 13th St. New York, NY 10014. Gansevoort Historic Distric. The unit is on the 5th floor of a rehabilitated industrial warehouse conversion with views of the newly created urban project High line Park. Neighborhood: Gansevoort is considered One of the world’s most innovative and beloved public spaces. It Offers visitors an outdoor experience unmatched anywhere else in New York. The park’s linear pathways and visitation density, provides the right conditions to ensure public events.
Design Concept: “Lagom”
Cultural Research:
A Swedish word meaning “Just the right amount”. A minimalist design, with emphasis on functionality and clean lines. A bright and inviting home where everyone gathers to live the “hygge” dream, meaning, living the good life surrounded by loved ones.
Life in the Nordic region was primarily responsible for shaping Scandinavian design. Simplicity and function are the guiding principles that have shaped Scandinavian design; resulting in spaces flooded with light, airiness, serenity and a feeling of oneness with nature. Scandinavian design principles play up natural elements, favor neutral color palettes, keep lines simple and squeeze optimal function out of every part of the decor. Scandinavians like nothing better than to have family and friend over for meals. The kitchen becomes the heart of the home where everyone gathers.
