Ask for « Alliance Baza(a)r », the program of Alliance Française in Kathmandu’s activities! All the AFK team is happy to present you its brand-new programme. Cultural activities, information about courses or studies in France, translation desk and French meals at the Bistrot: nothing has been left aside so that you always know what’s on around here. The main events in our planning for the coming months will be “Voyage en courts”, our short film festival on February, and the Francophonie Week (Frenchspeaking celebration) in March. Nepal is now thinking about the decisions that will shape its future, opening new ways in people’s mind. With its unique point of view, both in and outside Nepalese society, the AFK invites you on sideway paths, on which painters, photographers, poets, visual artists and actors will be, for a while, the fellow travelers that will enrich your lives.

SHORT FILM FESTIVAL
These films remind us that short films are fullyfledged artworks, that brevity is not incompatible with emotional power and complexity, and that from apparent simplicity can spring a myriad of questions. These films confirm the infinite variety of animation practice and how far stop-motion is an art that cannot be reduced to infantile entertainment. In the world of short films, cultural diversity is no empty concept. About 45 films from approximately 8 countries will carry us off on a maelstrom of images during 4 days. The richness and diversity of production in terms of both form and subject led us to define five main focuses: - Young audiences: the “Playground Shorts” program, - The weird and fantastic: the “Strange Shorts” program, - The feminine: the “Elles” program, - A selection from the Clermont Ferrand Festival: the “Clermont-Ferrand 2006” program, - The promotion of films from the South: this is the “World Shorts” program. Candid Society is conducting film-related
workshops exploring the medium of short films. If you are interested in attending and you work in a film medium, please contact Candid Society (thecandidsociety@gmail.com) for more information. NEPAL TOURISM BOARD - FREE SCREENINGS SCHEDULE Friday, 22 February 1pm : Opening ceremony (by invitation only) 1.30 pm - 3.30 pm : “Elles” program (by invitation only)
3.30 pm - 4 pm : Refreshment 4 pm - 5.30 pm : Roundtable 6 pm : “World Shorts” program Saturday, 23 February 2.30 pm - 4.30 pm : Wokshop 5 pm : “Strange Shorts” program Sunday, 24 February 2.30 pm - 4.30 pm : Wokshop 5 pm : “Clermont-Ferrand 2006” program Monday, 25 February 5 pm : “Playground Shorts” program For the details & the synopsis of each shortfilm presented, please check the website of Alliance Française in Kathmandu: www.alliancefrancaise.org.np We wish you a happy “Voyages en courts” journey into the world of short films!

learning french I have French friends and I wanna talk with them in French. I want to learn French to be able to speak with my French clients. French is an international language and it is important not to know only English.
The Library
Student, engineer, guide… our students have different backgrounds but share one will: learning French! With classes one hour a day, you are soon familiar with the sound of French language and, even if it takes time to be an independent speaker, or fluent, it is a great pleasure to learn more everyday. You already speak some French, and you want to improve? The Alliance organizes some tests during the admission period to find out in which level you can register. And if you just
want to assess your level in French, the Alliance Française is the only official examination centre in Nepal for French diplomas and certificates. In Spring, TEF (Test d’Evaluation du Français) and TEFaQ (TEF adapted for Quebec) will be organized. For 65 euros (equivalent paid in Nepalese rupees), you get a certificate which may be useful in the case of a visa application for Canada and Quebec or if you have plans of studies in France. Contact us for more details, or check our website - www.alliancefrancasie.org.np !
Guess which of our magazines is the most popular? Elle of course! Fashion, gossip, current affairs, travel, beauty and make-up, Elle is girls’ favorite. But there are not only girlish magazines in our periodicals corner: try Paris Match, Le Monde 2, le Courrier International or Okapi. Even if you don’t understand much of the text, photographs and titles can give you an original insight of French culture. And for the ones more fluent in French, try the Courrier International’s “Insolites” page, for unusual news about automatic service in restaurants, whisky in Pakistan or aliens in Sicily. You will also find in this magazine articles from all around the world, to consider news from a different point of view. Along with the magazines, the library membership will allow you to bring back home CDs, DVDs, books and comics… and if you are a simple onlooker, stay a while to watch a movie!
