events

Whenever we celebrate it, the beginning of a New Year is the right moment for projects… we thus wish you all a very good year 2065, full of exciting plans! As a counterpoint to these wishes, the future of Nepal is still uncertain, and waiting for happier days right now… then give yourself a treat: come to the library and let travel your mind through our new acquisitions. Comics, movies, books, magazines, nothing has been left aside in order to please your imagination. April and May will be lively months to be enjoyed at the Alliance Française. Cinema first, since Candid Society will be back in our premises after the Short Film Festival. The students’ party will be the occasion to share the dance floor with your friends and teachers, while brunch and luncheon on the grass will please your weakness for good food, along with the Bistrot’s daily services. April will also be the beginning of a new session of French classes at the Alliance: all the staff is at your disposal in order to give you any information needed… spread the word and be ready to have new experiences in French! A bientôt !

{library} This spring new books are blossoming on the shelves! Just to whet your appetite, have a glance at… Ella Maillard au Népal, Actes Sud, 1999 She was one of the outstanding travellers of the 20 th century. Writer and journalist through necessity, photographer by predilection, she explored distant regions of the planet in a search for the ultimate truth. A successful sportswoman famous for her travels and books, she crisscrossed the most outlying parts of the earth under what were truly adventurous conditions. In 1951, she leaves for Nepal which has just opened its borders. For the next thirty years (1957-87), she organizes cultural tours to various Asian countries, taking small groups of tourists to wherever, in her company, there was still something to be discovered. To her travel companions, she liked to say: “Ask yourself unceasingly ‘Who am I ?’ And through this constant query you will come to know that you are the Light of Consciousness.”

Jacques Demy, a boxed set of 6 movies Lola / La Baie des Anges / Les Parapluies de Cherbourg / Les Demoiselles de Rochefort / Peau d’Ane / Jacquot de Nantes Demy’s consistency of vision itself justifies his inclusion among the “auteurs”, defined by André Bazin and François Truffaut and expanded by Andrew Sarris as distinguishing themselves with their salient visual language from mere metteursen-scène. Demy certainly created a signature style of poetry and innocence and clung to it. Yet this quality also has a sophisticated aspect, suggesting the dream worlds of the surrealists and of Demy’s inspiration, Jean Cocteau. It is fitting that the American critic Gary Carey has described Demy as “the Joseph Cornell of French cinema”.

Carnets d’Orient, de Jacques Ferrandez, Casterman A set of 9 comics With his “Carnets d’Orient” (Notebooks from East), Jacques Fernandez explores from the inside the complicated, rich, and sometimes tragic history of Algeria and France, through colonization and war. From the beginning of the 19th century until the 60’s, Fernandez’s sensitive drawing invites us in the small stories that make History, in the footsteps of touching characters caught in between their feelings, their dreams, and reality: cultural misunderstandings, politics, and the long struggle of Algerians to rule their own country. Open these Carnets, you will begin a journey in space and time that you will not regret!

These are few examples of the 30 books and 50 comics recently acquired… the others are just waiting for your curiosity! For those who missed our Short Film Festival, “Voyages en Courts”, held in February, you can come in our library to watch them !

AFK Teachers’ quotations “When my students tell me that French is difficult, I answer ‘it is not difficult, it is different, and interesting’ “ “Undertaking to learn French doesn’t only mean coming to classes (and having a drink or playing table football afterwards!), it is above all being attentive, curious, and regular in one’s work, both in class and at home.” “To see shy students becoming more confident, or the ones who used to panic in front of difficulties learning how to overcome them is one of the greatest pleasures of a teacher.” “Each class is different and brings me something new, and it is a great pleasure to find again, some levels later, a student I had in level one.”
