Dear friends, It is with a great pleasure that the Alliance team presents you the new issue of Alliance Baza{a}r, filled with colours and lights. Yesterday we were celebrating Tihar with countless lights, and today we propose you to extend the atmosphere of this festival while welcoming a light magician, Pierre-Alain Hubert. From Marseille to New York, Bangkok to Singapore, Kathmandu will be the new stop of Pierre-Alain Hubert and his friend Karl Knapp, to our great delight. The two French artists will stay in Nepal for one month, time to meet Nepalese artists and to prepare an artistic performance during which all kind of artistic means will meet, mingle and get mixed. We are thus very proud to bring together all these performers on the same occasion, to indulge both their passion and your curiosity. Flipping through this Baza{a}r pages, you will also meet another French artist, Anne Lelong, Nepalese by adoption for already few years. Just like Alliance Française network, whose identity is a mixture of France and host countries, Anne Lelong’s artistic work follows several influences and inspirations, and draws a dynamic identity. November will also be the start of a new session of French classes in our premises. We have registered this year the greatest number of students since the Alliance’s creation in 1994. Thanks to all of you, students, teachers, partners and friends, the AFK has gained a growing position both in the pedagogical and cultural field, in a Nepalese state in a process of radical transformation. F This editorial drawing to its A K team end, it is now time for me to wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year 2009!

For over 35 years, his fireworks have delighted heads of state and audiences throughout the world (Paris, Denver, Milano, Berlin, Singapore, Tokyo, Jakarta, Seoul and so on). "Fireworks with soul" says Pierre-Alain HUBERT, "a painting will speak to you again, I only get one shot at making an impression on my audience, I deal with the instant".

together traditional folk tunes and instruments with new and improvised sounds and ideas. Self motivated and self driven, Kutumba is a group with their own unique sound and vision. Kutumba is the harmony of traditional roots, culture and new sounds. You will have the chance to discover a new face of Kutumba since they will play along with DJ Sharad. Aarohan Theatre Group/Gurukul In Nepali, Aarohan means to climb. It also means performing space. We work to create a Nepali theatre movement. We also perform Forum Theatre and train marginalized and oppressed people to use theatre as a weapon to improve their lives. With this vision Aarohan has established itself as one of the countries most dynamic and respected cultural institutions.

Karl KNAPP Karl Knapp is a French-American artist now living and working in Marseille, France. Painting sculpting, photography, drawings are mixed with more ephemeral mediums such as performance. Usually the results are presented as installation. The belief that contemporary art is a tool for touching all levels of society impales him to create works that have direct interaction with people in the public place. The more original direction for him was this experimental fusion to making art.

Tenzin Norbu Gurung Tenzin Norbu Gurung is from Tinkyu village Upper Dolpo. Norbu hails from a lineage of panting dating back four hundred years, and was trained by his father in the refined art of traditional Tibetan pastoral landscapes and lives. Since 1991, Norbu’s work has appeared in several international publications, illustrated some children’s book, doing several exhibitions in Nepal, France, USA, and Switzerland. He worked also for the movie "Himalaya" (Caravan), directed by the French director Eric Vally.

Les 8 offrandes By Anne LELONG A French photographer and painter Annne started sketching nomadic women wearing their traditional dresses and stone-jewelry during her numerous trips to remote areas near the Tibetan border. These sketches evolved into a series of paintings titled “Femmes Pierre” (“Stone-women”). The stones used, as well as their color, in stone-jewelry ornaments such as neckwear and headdresses provide clues as to where the woman is from, which group she belongs to, her social status within her group and other complex identityrelated clues. The “Stone-women” belong to the high Himalayan plateaus bordering Tibet. They still wear their own identity clues but time passes and brings the changes that slowly fade their colors, slowly taking away vital clues. A Graduate in Fine Arts and Cartography, Anne established her base in Nepal in 2001. She has found in both photography and painting suitable mediums to capture the Tibeto-Nepalese customs and traditions particularly those of nomadic groups.

Thank you !

The year 2008 is almost finished and we would like to take the opportunity of this Alliance Baza{a}r issue to thank all of those who joined AFK on the occasion of one (or several!) cultural event organized by our institution, be it for the first short-film festival in Nepal, the French-speaking celebration weeks or also the huge Fête de la Musique which gathered more than 20,000 people together on Durbar Marg. So, a big thank you to NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati, Bhushan Shilpakar, Diwas K.C., Alston Da Silva, Mariano E. Abello, Ram Prasad Kadel, Salil Subedi Kanika, Sunil Pokharel, Sachida Rauniyar, Bijaya Vaidya, Prakash Sayami, and to all of those, impossible to name on this page, who played a part, large or small, in the success of our events. Thank you also to our sponsors who have been supporting us all along this year, and in particular Mr Nirola and all the Nepal Tourism Board team, Mr Pande and the Nepal Investment Bank, and Mr Khetan through Tuborg. And, last but not least, thank you to all the journalists without whom our actions would not be visible.

The Alliances Françaises of India and Nepal have traditionally been forums to welcome and promote local and international artists, providing them a public space to offer their creations and showcase their talents. A Jazz Club, initiated in each city where the Alliance Française is present, is now formed to become such a meeting and exchange space. Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory The director and co-founder of KJC, Mariano E. Abello is an experienced Jazz educator and performer. Since his arrival, Mariano has observed that Nepal is a country full of very talented, mostly self-taught musicians who have not had the opportunity to undertake formal Jazz music education. It was these observations that provided the inspiration which, with the help of like-minded musicians, led to the creation of KJC. In addition to their studies, students of the Conservatory will have the opportunity to perform at any of KJC monthly concert series programs and will be able to form invaluable relationships with fellow students and musicians from around the community. KJC is the first and only institution of its kind in the whole of Nepal. A Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory tour, with Mariano and Nepalese musicians, in different Alliance Française Jazz Club in India is currently in preparation for the end of 2008 or during 2009. Stay tuned ! Log on to www.alliancefrancaise.org.np or to www.katjazz.com for more information.

AFK Levels

{courses}

At the Alliance Française in Kathmandu, we chose a rhythm of 50 hours per session, in order to settle a step by step learning pace of the required skills and knowledge. There are 14 levels, following the program of the three Connexions French books. We also use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in order to describe the level and progress of our students in accordance with a largely used and recognized scale of language proficiencies. According to the six levels of proficiency defined by the Council of Europe, students are then able to reach level A1 (Breakthrough level) after three sessions, A2 (Survival level) after 6 or 7 sessions, and B1 (the first stage of Independent User) after 12 sessions. You can start the classes from any point: if you are not a beginner, you will just have to take a test before admission to check which level matches your proficiency.
