TASAFU - Kathmandu Scrolls by Julien Sole
"For me painting is indissociable from the Orient a very wide Orient, which goes through Varanasi, Alexandria, Napoli and Tanger, and which continues towards the west up to New York, and even further... so I travel by necessity, looking for the Orient . An Orient always shifting and hiding away, and when I have a lost any hope to trace it back one morning waking up in Pierio's room in Kathmandu there are noises and chants a clear light, a small wind dogs and kids turning clockwise around the stupa then without any doubt, I am back on the oriental road - for a while ." Julien SolĂŠ has been painting in travel for the last ten years. Among other countries, he has worked and made exhibitions in Egypt, Morocco and Ethiopia. In spring 2009, he has found in Nepal an unexpected and inexhaustible source for his work. On the exhibition program : long sketches and watercolors on scrolls of paper which will be sometimes framed, sometimes shown on handle machines. There will also be texts and extracts from the folded book "TASAFU", a project which is supported by the French Alliance in Kathmandu. {Interview} Every two months AFK gives the opportunity to someone to talk about his relation with France and French Language. This month we introduce you Ashok Shakya. Ashok is a teacher at AFK and a photographer. When and why did you decide to learn French? In 1987 I was science student at Amrit Science Campus, but I was equally interested and involved in music and literature. Sartre, Camus, Maupassant and Moliere were some of my favorite French writers. At that time, my elder brother had some French friends who used to work in a NGO in Nepal. So I joined French Cultural Centre. How and why did you decide to become a French teacher? 3 years after I joined FCC, in 1990, there was a sort of contest for a scholarship to study in France. In my knowledge, it was the first scholarship for a Nepalese student to become French language teacher. So I decided to drop my science studies to Join French University. For my further studies I preferred French literature and teaching methods to become French language teacher. You studied in France, could you tell us about your stay? That scholarship was a big opportunity for me to study in abroad. During 5 years of my stay in France, I could meet not only French people but also many students from all over the world. Living with different cultures and different people and visiting different countries brings open-mindedness. I can see my own society and country in many different ways with hindsight. You teach French for 14 years, now you're a specialized teacher in FOS (français sur objectifs spécifiques), what is it exactly? If someone needs French language to communicate within a short period in his or her professional field with French speakers, FOS is a very helpful to focus in any professional field like hotel and travel, fashion etc. I followed training at Mumbai in these fields and I took trekking guide courses for trekking guides as the subject of my dissertation. I also work as French trekking guide. I can understand more our trekking guides’ needs in this field. For 2 years I’m having these trekking guide classes. Very recently in December 2009, I have been awarded a diploma from France that allows me to give specific French lessons in different professional fields. At your opinion, why people should learn French? Good knowledge of French gives a good opportunity to continue higher education in French universities which cost far less than education in English medium in Europe. Language skill is an important factor to understand a culture, a civilization. It’s an open- mindedness towards different culture, different civilization. Learning a language is not just learning it but it’s also having a different attitude, thinking with a different vision. As French language is one of the UN languages, it can open the door to an international carrier and it is necessary to learn French to migrate in Quebec (Canada). Alliance Baza{a}r | Jan-Feb 2010 | 9
