{Editorial} Namaste! Dear Friends, Let’s welcome festivities! As we are already in June it’s the time to celebrate Music again. All around the globe, and at the AFK as well, June is the month of Music. Yes, the AFK devises this year, as last year, a hot program! The International Music Week will be held between June 21 and June 27. For the 2010 edition, and once again, we have invited a group from France for this very occasion. Remember its name, SAM SMALA, the band that will spark the Rastriya Nachghar off on June 27. SAM SMALA, which name is of North African origin meaning family, is a band of five incredible musicians playing their own compositions. Their inspiration finds it sources in Jazz, Gypsy Jazz and World Music. This fusion between World and Jazz gives shows displaying Jazz performances and World songs. But awaiting for this concert, we have created a rich and divers program. On the June 21, official Music Day, we’ll have the pleasure to welcome you in Bhaktapur, on the Dattatraya Square, for an unforgettable series of open concerts starting at 3pm. Because the spirit of the Music day is to have free concerts in open spaces, we are, this year, extending the Music Week outside of the Ring Road, in Bhaktapur. The AFK in collaboration with Service Civil International Nepal propose you an exceptional program. And once again we collaborate with Nepal Music Centre for a concert in their premises with violin students from Narayan Gopal Music Trust and students of Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya (NMC Trust). Since the International Music Festival also means offering young bands with a platform, the AFK organizes for the first time its music contest which winner will play on stage to open SAM SMALA’s concert at the Rastriya Nachghar! {Event} AFK MUSIC CONTEST Audition: Wednesday, June 23rd 4PM | alliance française, teku Are you a musician? Are you below 25? Share the stage with an International Band at Rastriya Nachghar! On the occasion of the International Music Day, the AFK is organizing a music contest open to all young creative musicians below 25. Winners of the contest, selected by a jury of professionals, will get the chance to play the first part of French band Sam Smala at Rastriya Nachghar on Sunday 27th June 2010, 6PM.
All musical styles welcome ! Conditions to apply: • All Band members to be younger than 25 years old (born after 1984) • Band should play their own compositions (no covers) • Band should not have released any commercial album yet • All Band members must be available on 23rd June from noon & on the 27th June 2010 all day How to apply: • Fill up the form available on the AFK’s website www.alliancefrancaise.org.np and print it out or get it from the Reception of the AFK (Teku opposite to Yamaha workshop) • Return the form & your Demo that should include three to five songs of your own composition to the AFK by 10th June 2010

SMALA is a word which comes from North Africa and means “Family”, and evokes the feeling of warmth that family inspires. SAM SMALA is like a family of musicians who play their own songs. These five incredible performers are inspired by jazz, gypsy jazz and world music. Their show is a mix of live jazz performance and World song. They create a fusion between jazz and world music. This band takes you from Havana to Paris, from New York to Istanbul without pretention and with a full enjoyment of life. They want to share their musical spirit with everyone. They have been playing together for ten years before the creation of the band Sam SMALA. They are all great jazzmen who have studied in some of the greatest music schools in the world, the Conservatory of Paris and the New York ‘s Drummers collective. SAM SMALA represents a new French generation of jazz and song musicians. {Courses} Oh, là là ! New session, new record !! We are very happy to welcome our 440 students for this new session. Thank you for coming to Alliance française de Katmandou to learn French but also meet people from different background and make new friends. Every session more and more people become part of the "Alliance family". We are very proud to note that the amount of people speaking and understanding French in Nepal regularly increases. Our team of experienced teachers will enable you to master communicative French, step by step, from the beginner levels to the advanced ones in a new Alliance : each class has been fitted up with new equipment and one more class has been open. French Session for Trekking Professionals In Nepal, a lot of trekkers come from French speaking countries, creating a growing demand for guides able to work using French language. This is why Alliance française, with all its experience in educational field, propose a special program for trekking professionals, in order to teach them what they really need to know in French. These classes (three levels of 40 hours each) are based on an oral approach, to develop all the oral skills needed by the professionals, to speak as naturally as possible.
Q&A "I don’t speak English", "I haven’t my SLC" : can I register ? Any professional can join the classes, either the complete beginner or the one who already speak some French : the former will start from the beginning while the latter will take a test before the session starts to determine what his level is. No need to be fluent in English to take classes : the levels are taught by Nepalese teachers and the classes are mainly conducted in French. "But I don’t have much time" : when are organized the classes ? From 20th July to 16th August 2010 (two hours a day from Monday to Friday). Admissions from 5th July to 18th July 2010.
