{Note}

Dear friends, Since the beginning of 2009, the Alliance Française in Katmandu offered you more than a dozen of social and artistic events of local and international scales. From music to artistic performance, from issues like HIV/AIDS to Environment, via the Celebration of Francophonie, nothing would have been left aside for your pleasure. However, so far, we’ve never take part to a children book publication, written and illustrated by two young French women, published by a Nepalese book publisher, and distributed in French in Nepal. From now on, it is done, with the launching of “Leela, prophéties et patatra…”, designed by two well-known personalities of our institution: Mireille Hamon-Loirat, our previous Course In charge, and Priscille Geiser, who has been living in Nepal for some time. We present you, with an undisguised pleasure, this masterpiece, for little and big children, and wish this book all the success it deserves. Cheers to the authors for this 100% Nepalese publication with French-speaking dimension! Nepal always sees its Francophile and French-speaking community growing bigger and as a proof of it the increase of our students and partners. Each day more than 450 persons visit our premises, and new companies, like Buddha Air and its Director Mr. Birendra Bahadur Basnet I greet and thanks, trust us by going into partnership with us. Next opportunities to join us: from July 15 the new French session (registration from June 15), and year round at Le Bistrot, the Translation desk, the Multi-media Library or Campus France desk. All these initiatives and nice projects produced by our Alliance wouldn’t be possible without the active participation of all: sponsors, artistic and institutional partners, journalists. We thank you and dedicate this issue of Alliance Baza{a}r to all of you, through our important role of platform for local initiatives. Thank you and congratulations to all of you! See you soon!

Nepal through the lenses of pencils and words… How to capture Nepal other than through the lens of a camera? How to render its vibes, the diversity of its people and landscapes without flattening the country’s reality? Speaking with images as much as words, this illustrated book shares fragments of Nepal through the authors’ own vision, opening doors to the reader’s imagination. A young woman, a saddhu, a prophecy are some of the key ingredients of this hilly story that draws from a local legend, and develops with humorous allusions to Nepalese food, habits, typical characters and even politics! Thereby it offers different levels of reading… for the pleasure of both adults and children. A glossary also helps you step further into the story. As an appetizer, here is what the back cover says: The head in the clouds and strolling around, Leela doesn’t want to hear about a husband. Her father insists more and more and she despairs: what to do? Trying to change his decision she awakes secrets and a prophecy… and triggers a turmoil of consequences. A way to look at Nepal with different eyes, to remember your stay or to offer an insight of the country, Leela’s story invites you to discover or re-discover Nepal with your imagination. So, follow Leela from her neighbourhood to the hills, through events and unexpected encounters, and let her be your guide! The authors: Mireille Loirat (words), Priscille Geiser (images) Living and working in Nepal for several years, we created this story almost at the end of our stay, as if we needed some time to digest all we discovered here. The result is this free interpretation and adaptation of Nepalese surroundings and life, which weaves together reality and fantasy. The book is published by Vajra Books and has been launched in June at the AFK. It is available at Vajra Books’ shop in Jyatha, Thamel, and in other bookshops in Kathmandu… for more information about selling points contact Vajra Books (4220562) or AFK. The authors will be pleased to read your comments: prophetie.patatras@gmail.com

Y! is back

Nepali magazines are growing in number however there was a vacuum for a well-rounded youth magazine. Then came Y! in September 2006. The magazine provides dedicated coverage to politics, gender, community, environment and other youthrelated issues like music, fashion, career, sports, entertainment etc. It’s true that all finds space in this bi-lingual magazine. The concept of two languages – English and Nepali – works well as it becomes an all-encompassing magazine that helps to bridge the gap between the urban and rural Nepali youth. Another reason why Y! stands out. Y! gives their readers a balance in content with innovative cover designs making it a magazine that seems to be ever evolving and pro-change. One can sense that the Y! team has made a conscious decision to bring about social change by taking responsibility to do what they can in encouraging the youth of this nation to think, act, react, aspire, inspire, progress, question, believe. The magazine speaks their tongue and is working towards finding a common ground amidst diversity – be it ethnic, geographic or economic. In its second inning, Y! has returned as a quarterly. Alliance Francaise in Kathmandu has always supported initiatives that cater to the youth. Wishing the Y! team good luck we hope this time they are here to stay. Y! {Le Bistrot}

As all of us at the Alliance Française, « Le Bistrot » is glad to accompany « Leela, prophéties et patatra » to take its first steps. This masterpiece strikes a special chord for us since we have a lot in common. We share the same audience, grownups and children; as you may know, we serve our delicacies Monday to Friday not only in our premises but also to the pupils of the French 7am - 6:30pm school and to some of the British school. As the illustrator and the writer, we are artists; just the differences are we use spoons instead of pencils, frying pans instead of crayons and knives instead of pastels. And last but not the least, we are creating courses and menus as they are imagining stories and characters. Even in the timing, thanks to the calendar, we just have a gap of one month between our both last events; we unveiled our new menus in May while they launched their book in June. Isn’t it amazing? About pure food, If we do not prepare magic momo’s (we tried to have Hajuraamaa showing us but of course, she doesn’t feel like sharing her secret with simple commoners!), we cook a fine Paëlla, we prepare some fresh and refreshing salads and we bake a special cheesecake, amidst many. The summer menus are of fresh inspiration and truly, when the weather burns, that’s the best! Would you want to learn more about it, visit our website www.aliancefrançaise.org.np , everything is online. Doesn’t it feel like we’ll get food for our minds and bellies for the next couple of months?
