En el año de 1936, cumpliéndose el 200 aniversario de la Primera Misión Geodésica Francesa, el geógrafo ecuatoriano Luis Tufiño, con la ayuda del Comité Franco Americano, edifica el Primer Monumento de 10 metros de altura. El Dr. Patricio Romero Barbeis en el período de 1978-1982, en su plan de gobierno considera la creación y ejecución del proyecto Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. Finalmente, en mayo de 1979 realiza el desarmado del antiguo monumento y lo traslada al parque principal de Calacalí, población por donde también se proyecta la Línea Equinoccial.

On the 200th anniversary of the First French Geodesic Mission in 1936, the Ecuadorian geographer Luis TufiĂąo, with the help of the Franco American Committee, were able to construct the first 10 meter high monument. Between 1978 and 1982, during Dr. Patricio Romero Barbeis government, the creation and execution of the Middle of the World City project was considered. Finally in May 1979 the disassembly of the old monument started so it could be moved to the main park in CalacalĂ, place where the equator line is also projected.

La construcción comienza en el año de 1981 y son once años de actividad para poner a disposición del turista nacional y extranjero, una obra centrada en dos secciones que se complementan, la ciudad y el Monumento Ecuatorial. La Ciudad Mitad del Mundo abre sus puertas el 1 de Mayo de 1992 bajo la administración del Prefecto de Pichincha Marco Landázuri Romo, logrando de esta manera el establecimiento de un símbolo turístico que cristalizó sueños, esperanzas, y el progreso de la provincia. In 1981 the project development began and took eleven years of activity to make it available to national and international tourists, a work centered in two sections which complement each other, the city and the Equatorial Monument. The Middle of the World City starts operating on May 1st, 1992 during the administration of Prefect of Pichincha Mr. Marco Landazuri Romo, making it possible to achieve the establishment of a tourist symbol crystallizing dreams, hopes, and progress of the province. Currently, the Middle of the World City is the most visited touristic icon in Ecuador. Since 2014, under the leadership of the Prefect of Pichincha Economist Gustavo Baroja and Vice-prefect Dr. Marcela Costales, it has undertaken on an aggressive renovation and opening of new spaces within the city.

When we as Ecuadorians visit other countries we identify ourselves saying “We are from the middle of the World and our country is Ecuador”. The same thing happens with visitors from abroad, who are satisfied when taking a picture with a foot on each hemisphere, or when raising their hands creating the illusion of holding the sphere that crowns the Equatorial Monument. These manifestations are already a custom for our country, and have allowed tourism to spread the word worldwide that our country is “The Middle of the World.”
