October marks the return of the Affordable Art Fair to beautiful Battersea Park and, in our seventeenth year in this auspicious London location, we cannot wait to play our part in demonstrating that #LondonIsOpen! Standing alongside our creative, entrepreneurial and industrial counterparts this Autumn, we celebrate all that this city has to offer, continuing to place London firmly at the center of the art world map. The Autumn Collection is bursting full of galleries and artists from the international community and we are thrilled to welcome a host of new exhibitors to our stable. American gallery Axiom Contemporary join us with their brand of contemporary pop art, while Galerie Calderone bring a raft of European artistic talent with them from France. If it’s art inspired by the East that you’re particularly interested in then be sure to visit Hanoi Art House, Lalanta Fine Art and ArtBlue Studio – all new to Battersea and brimming with contemporary works from across South East Asia. For something a little closer to home London-based JP Art Gallery and photography specialists The Print Room at Beetles + Huxley take the reins.
Amid a year of political and cultural change, we are thrilled to be back in the familiar shadow of the iconic Battersea Power Station, watching with bated breath as the regeneration continues apace. And in the spirit of all things new, this year’s Recent Graduates’ Exhibition is set to excite as we introduce Medeia Cohan as the new curator. Having worked in the London art scene for over a decade, Medeia has approached this year’s degree shows with vigor, presenting a vibrant collection of 2D and 3D works which for the first time will be located throughout the fair. With a keen eye for selecting the best of each year’s graduating class we cannot wait to see what Medeia has in store for us at this year’s fair – be sure to watch out for a few surprises along the way! So, whatever your taste and budget, with over 1,000 artists on display and prices starting at £100 we are sure you will be able to find the piece that’s perfectly suited to you this October.
Luci Noel, Fair Director

G A LLERIES IN FOC US Two of our exhibiting galleries, Jealous and JAMM Gallery give us their insider tips for making the most of the fair; and take a look into the future of art in a digital age.
J E AL O US We caught up with Gallery Manager Louise Fitzjohn to hear all about Jealous and get her expert advice on starting a collection.
have many prized pieces, my absolute favourites are originals gifted to me by incredible artists and very good friends of mine, including pieces by Tinsel Edwards, Adam Koukoudakis and a portrait of me by Christopher Ward.

Jealous first opened its doors in 2008, in Crouch End. Since then, we have opened Jealous East – which houses two floors of print studios, artist studios and our second gallery. The gallery was born through the passion of our Director, Dario Illari, who wanted to create a screenprinting studio and gallery. Our uniqueness comes from the fact that we make all the editions in the gallery, working collaboratively with a wide range of artists to create them.
For me, I hang art on my walls for the love of it. When I wake up every morning and see the work on my walls it makes me so much happier! Artwork can enhance an interior, but for myself, I like to be surrounded with the work I wish I could create and that evokes emotions you just can’t get with anything else.
D o yo u col l e c t ar t y ou r se l f , if s o, w hat ’s t h e m ost r e c e nt ad dit ion t o your col l e c ti on and what ’s y our mo s t p rize d pi e c e ?
Don't be afraid to walk into the stands, to look more closely at the craftsmanship of the pieces and ask questions! Buy what you love, not what other people tell you that you should love; you have to live with the piece, so choose something that stirs something up inside you. Lastly, don't forget that most galleries have more works by the same artist, so snoop around the stand and if you do find an artist you love, but you’re not sure, do a bit of research before you buy into them. My top tip – if you ask for a re-entry pass you can come back another day, for free!
I do – I don't think you can be in this business unless you want to fill your own walls full of the art you love! My most recent addition is Daisy Emerson's ‘Amazing,’ which is a screenprint edition with bubblegum colours and glitter. I

J AM M G A LLE RY Following a successful Affordable Art Fair Hampstead, JAMM Gallery have joined us in Battersea for the Autumn edition. We take a look into the future with the online gallery’s co-founder, Amy Frost. W h at wo rk wou l d we ty pi c al ly fin d o n t he wa ll of JA MM? JAMM Gallery shows interesting, intriguing work. We like artists to offer something a bit different such as Roger Taylor's light sculptures. We like to juxtapose different mediums and interesting, quirky works of art that draw people in. W h at is yo ur e xpe r i e nc e of e x h i bit in g at an A f f or d abl e Art F a ir? A lot of thought and preparation goes into the art fairs JAMM do. We love the energy that comes from exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair, and like to keep our artists informed throughout the fair about how it is going, what is selling and the reactions we are getting to their work. We understand how hard it can be for an artist to hand over their work and wait, so we like to involve them in the whole process.
W h ic h a rt is t s s h ould w e p ar ti cu l ar l y look out for on y our s tand ? We are exhibiting a new body of linocuts by Ade Adesina at the Battersea fair and we are really excited to see them. He has such a talent for working with lino printing and his ideas behind the work are fascinating, merging his roots as a Nigerian artist, with his views on the world and man’s impact on it. Light sculptor Roger Taylor stole the show at the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead this year and he has got something bigger and better for Battersea, so watch this space... W h a t do y ou t h in k th e f u tu r e h o l d s for t h e a rt m a rket in o u r r ap i d l y exp a n din g digit a l w o r l d ? We are an online gallery, and do small pop up shows and art fairs. As we don't have a permanent retail place to run, we have the time to think outside the box, and have already worked with the Affordable Art Fair to introduce artists to the fair using social media. The online art market is a huge deal, and so much can now be achieved online without the ties of a permanent location. It is an exciting time for the art world, and it is important for galleries to adapt to this new market.

RECENT GRA D UA TES' EXH IB ITION: MEET T H E C U RA T O R
Our enthusiasm for new and emerging talent is hard to hide and with a brand new Recent Graduates' Curator we’ve found another excuse to shout about all the wonderful work coming through to our fairs from artists at the beginning of their careers. Medeia Cohan talks us through her thinking behind this year’s display and why she’s the perfect person for the job! 'For this years Recent Graduates' Exhibition I wanted to take advantage of the evolving layout of the fair and present something ambitious and perhaps unfamiliar. I very much see this exhibition in two parts: In the atrium, right at the front of the fair, is my pick of the most exciting painters that were discovered at the last round of UK degree shows. In this section, I've focused on six artists and curated a series of mini solo presentations, each showcasing a number of works, many previously unseen. By doing so, I aim to provide a strong context and a deeper insight into the work of each artist. 'As visitors explore the fair, they'll discover four special commissions that make up the second part of the Recent Graduates' Exhibition. For these sections, I have selected four artists – Jake Grewal, Bex Ilsley, Holly Muir and Tom Stewart – encouraging each to propose an experimental installation that stretches the established confines of an art fair. The results are engaging and interactive, challenging and thoughtful. I hope these provide an alternative experience, while emphasising the diversity of work emerging from UK art schools.'
With over ten years’ under your belt working in the London art world, talk us through your career highlights to date. My favourite shows have been when I've helped to facilitate unconventional happenings. Events like Nicky Deeley's 'The Beasts of Lismore' and Mike Ballard's 'Whose Coat Is That Jacket You're Wearing?' are part story-telling, part performance. They encourage public participation and spill out beyond the boundaries of an art exhibition. What experience do you think has helped you hone your eye for emerging talent the most? Previously I was the Curator for University of the Arts London and during that time I pushed Future Map to evolve into a cutting-edge annual showcase for graduating artists taking place in some of London's top galleries with expert selection panels. These shows meant sourcing the best of the best from fine art to design and exhibiting them together in an engaging way. It was no mean feat! What excites you about the role of Recent Graduates' Curator? Providing a platform for artists outside of the major London art schools and getting their work in front of more than 20,000 people. This year's selection includes artists from Bournemouth, Brighton, Manchester, Salford, Glasgow and the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford.
1
What do you hope visitors to the fair will experience when they encounter the class of 2016? I hope visitors are able to slow down, engage and benefit from taking the time to look carefully. I think the installations particularly will excite and engage those who are unafraid to give them a chance. Which stands might you be found browsing at this year’s fair?

Print Club London and Jealous for affordable prints. TAG Fine Arts have some exciting artists.
Any top tips for artists at the beginning of their career? Don't price your work too high, too early. So often artists jump in with an initial valuation that's impossible to sustain. And don't be afraid to talk to collectors and curators to make opportunities happen for yourself.
