WORKSHOPS,TOURS & SPECIAL EVENTS

London really is the place to be for art lovers this June. Now in its sixteenth year, the Tate Modern gears up to open its new extension – the Switch House - to its members this week. The former power station now boasts an abundance of exciting spaces to explore, expanding the gallery by 60%. With ten floors and an amazing view, we can’t wait to see the new space and the artwork now on view, ahead of their Georgia O’Keefe show opening in a few weeks time. But first, we’re delighted to be back on Hampstead Heath to enjoy some stunning views of our own. Opening a few months before Tate Modern, the Affordable Art Fair launched in 1999 and has come a long way since then. From a single fair in South London, we now host multiple international fairs across the world, from Singapore to Seoul, Bristol to Brussels. This edition welcomes seventeen new galleries, including Galeria Miquel Alzueta from Barcelona and Parisian Galeria Calderone, as well as Hampstead locals Z10, ContemporArti and Beside the Wave. We also have a stable of Scottish galleries, from fair favourites Scottish Art Portfolio and

Eduardo Alessandro, to first time exhibitors Gallery Heinzel and Urbane Art Gallery. In a year when Glaswegian artist and Turner Prize nominee Ciara Phillips has just been commissioned to design her very own ‘dazzle ship’ to commemorate the first world war, we’re thrilled to spotlight the creative talent emerging from Scotland this fair. As a local to Hampstead Heath, I’m so excited to be the new Fair Director of this vibrant fair and would like to say a big thank you to my predecessor Romy Westwood, without whom we would not be enjoying such an array of art on the Heath today. So whether you are joining us with a drink in hand for the Summer Art Soirée, perusing that perfect piece from an eclectic selection of sculpture, prints and paintings (by over 1,000 artists, no less!) or partaking in a bespoke talk from the London Art Salon over the weekend, we hope you enjoy falling in love with art this Summer.

A SLOW BURN ROMANCE WITH ART Alison Cohen is Director and Co-founder of The London Art Salon (www.londonartsalon. com) and offers her own insight into how to develop your own taste in art. When Jay Z raps about Picasso, and Botticelli inspires a Lady Gaga album cover it is clear that art has entered the mainstream. The blurring of fine art and popular culture has amplified art’s appeal as growing numbers are visiting galleries and collecting art. But navigating countless exhibitions can be daunting, contemporary art can be baffling and traditional art can seem stuffy. It’s hard to know where to start. We founded the London Art Salon with this in mind: how best to dive in and participate in the excitement of London’s art world? The best relationships are slow burn. Here are our top tips on how to nurture a relationship with art over time: Stop into local galleries. Galleries cluster, so select a neighbourhood, invite a friend, and hop from gallery to gallery. Experiencing a variety of art boosts confidence and develops an ‘eye for art’. Most gallerists love what they do and are happy to share knowledge so walk in with confidence!

Treat yourself to a playful day of art. Hire a Boris Bike and ride through Hyde Park to the Serpentine Gallery, or stroll The Line outdoor sculpture walk in Greenwich. Slow down. Balance out gallery hopping with long gazes at individual works of art. Give yourself time for an emotional response. Personally connecting with art is really what it’s about. Attend stimulating art talks. Hosted in eclectic venues, The London Art Salon brings exhibitions to life with surprising backstories and world-class speakers. City Lit, Birkbeck and public museums provide high quality lectures in a traditional style. Looking to buy? Art fairs are a boon for the art buyer. They are buzzy and social, plus hundreds of gallerists are in one place waiting to help us find that perfect piece to fall in love with. Trust your own taste. Most important is to select what you like. Collector Ron Lauder divides the work he sees into three categories: ‘There’s the Oh, the Oh My, and the Oh My God’. He only buys the ‘Oh My God’ pieces. London Art Salon will be leading daily ‘Tour du Jours’ at 3pm. Each day’s tour looks at work in different price brackets to suit all budgets. Thursday: Finds under £500 Friday: Discoveries under £1000 Saturday: Treasures under £2000 Sunday: Masterpieces under £5000

1. Fran Giffard. Robin. Graphite pencil and watercolour over artist’s Moleskine diary. 21 x 26cm. £350. Curious Duke Gallery.

INSIDER TIPS: ASK THE DESIGNERS Sometimes, love at first sight doesn’t mean the perfect pairing. And with art, we’re sure plenty of our visitors fall for their dream piece, but need a little help integrating it into their home. To counter these challenges for budding collectors, we spoke to interior stylists Rebecca Nee and Jo Thornhill, who advise how to introduce art into your living space, hitch free! What can art add to a home? Jo: In my own home, I haven't felt a room is truly finished until I've filled the walls with favourite prints or paintings, and when I'm designing a room scheme for a client, artwork is always as much of a consideration as furniture and colour schemes.

2. Moriello. Glamorous Queen. Digital print with varnish and diamond dust, mounted on Dibond, edition of 7. 76 x 76cm. £1,850. Arteria Gallery.

Rebecca: Adding artwork to a room is a great way to introduce colour without redecorating. If you're looking for something to help tie a room together, then choose pieces that mirror styles and colours of existing furniture. How do you group together pieces on a wall without making it look disorganised? Rebecca: To create a salon hang without it looking cluttered simply takes some planning. Mark out an area of floor around the same size as the wall you are covering and place your pieces within it, moving them around until you get a combination you like. Take a photo of your preferred layout so you have a reference in case anything gets moved. Jo: Keep everything quite tight and keep spacing a similar distance between all the frames. Sticking to the same colour frames throughout can also help. How can you centre your room’s décor around one hero piece of art? Rebecca: Centre it above a key piece of furniture where it will be in plain view and try adding soft furnishings or ornaments in complimentary colours. When framing the work consider the style of the furniture already in the room.

1

DESIGNER PICKS

2

Jo: Go large-scale to stop it looking lost, or centre it on a smaller wall such as a chimneybreast so it looks to scale within its space. Often people make the mistake of hanging art too high on their walls - aim to hang so the top third of the piece is roughly level with your eyeline, or if hanging directly above a sofa or bed, go even lower for a more intimate feel.

1. Jo: The beautiful, calming colours in Fran Giffard’s Robin have a slight retro feel, and would sit well within a harmonious blue and green interiors setting, mixed in with some other paintings and prints for relaxed feel. 2. Rebecca: What better way to celebrate the 90th birthday of our very own Queen than with this abstract pixelated piece. Moriello’s work will bring a bright splash of colour to any room and would especially sit well within a modern light room with neutral interiors allowing it to really pop.

MADE IN ARTS LONDON We’re thrilled to welcome Made in Arts London (MiAL) back for their fourth year to the Heath, exhibiting an exciting roster of emerging talent from one of Europe’s largest arts institutions, University of the Arts London. We spoke to them about the importance of supporting early career artists and how the fair has nurtured their creative talent over the years.

2. Kudzanai-Violet Hwami. Wimbledon Plugs vs ZESA. Oil on canvas. 100 x 100cm. £1,200.

The Hampstead Fair has become a pivotal event in our yearly programme and one that MiAL artists hugely look forward to taking part in. Each year we handpick a collection of some of the very best artwork from our emerging artists, giving the Affordable Art Fair audience a unique opportunity to view and invest in this incredible new work. The artists in this year’s MiAL exhibition challenge the way in which we currently perceive places, cultures and traditions within modern society. Whether they are addressing boundaries in specific societies, questioning common practices in art or drawing attention to things often overlooked, each artist encourages their audience to consider the subject matter within their work in a new light. Artists who have exhibited with MiAL have gone on to achieve real success in their careers as a direct result of selling work at the fair. For MiAL artist Esther Ellard, exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair led to new projects and opportunities:

2

"Being part of the Affordable Art Fair was an excellent opportunity to get my work seen by a wide ranging audience. Following the fair I had my first solo exhibition, and was invited to hold workshops at London Graphics Centre and Paperchase. I recently sold a line of prints at the Big Bang Data exhibition, Somerset House.” Similarly, Joshua von Uexell’s describes what exhibiting at the fair means to him: “Affordable Art Fair was the first art fair I visited and I was impressed by its unique position surrounded by the vast woodland of Hampstead Heath. I always wondered how I could get my work shown, and now this opportunity has arisen through MiAL. I like the energy of the visitors, there are a lot of art collectors as well as people who just enjoy art.”

Thomas Burnett was one such visitor and shares a fond memory of his first purchase at an art fair: "My purchase from Made in Arts London was my first ever art fair buy, two years later the piece is still hanging on my wall and I’ve continued to buy MiAL pieces as gifts for myself and others! I’m looking forward to seeing them again at Affordable Art Fair this year and seeing what new gems they have to offer!" – Thomas Burnett, MiAL Customer Head to the front of the marquee to see MiAL’s exhibition, and don’t miss them in action at the Live Painting Studio throughout the fair.

HUMANS ON THE HEATH School’s Art Competition. Supported by Anscombe and Ringland. With special thanks to City of London Corporation What do you love about Hampstead Heath? Is it the wild, open-air ponds, the lush greenery or that view from Parliament Hill? Perhaps you have a favourite secluded spot or maybe it’s when a certain art fair comes to town? To understand a little more about how people - and moreover, children – enjoy the Heath, we put this question to local primary and secondary school pupils. The variety of responses was amazing, from abstract interpretations to touching renderings of what the Heath means to them. We’re showing a selection of the winning entries at the fair – make sure you spend some time checking out their wonderful drawings. With thanks to Christchurch School, Devonshire House Preparatory, Heathside Preparatory School, Kingfisher Forest School, Marylebone Boy’s School, New End Primary School, South Hampstead Junior School, The Academy School. The Phoenix School and William Ellis School.

With the fusion of art, fashion and popular culture, greater numbers want to engage with London’s art scene. But contemporary art can be baffling and traditional art stuffy. So we started The London Art Salon.

Our talks and gallery walks are social, buzzy and bring the London art world to life!
