It’s that time of year again and we’re delighted to be back to add a splash of art to Battersea.

Programme Timetable

I can’t believe a whole year has flown by since we were celebrating our 15th anniversary, and since then we’ve been planning and preparing our fairs with even more excitement and enthusiasm than before (who knew that was even possible?!). This edition certainly promises to be packed full of fantastic changes, and we can’t wait to share them with you – we promise it’s worth switching the rugby off for! As Battersea itself is being transformed with the massive redevelopment of the iconic Power Station, we’ve had our own mini transformation in the form of the fabulous redesign of the fair venue. With a fresh new feel, a brand new cafe and plenty of special feature areas for you to explore, this edition of the fair promises to be bigger, brighter, and better than ever. We’re also delighted to have joined forces with the wonderful people at Sipsmith independent spirits and Fever-Tree premium natural mixers tonic, who will be offering their delectable, award-winning drinks at the central Artisanal Gin and Tonic Bar. We’re thrilled to welcome an eclectic selection of new exhibitors and artists into the mix for this edition of the fair, from Dutch photography specialists ARTITLEDcontemporary, and young London-based gallery India Dickinson, to Lacey Contemporary Art, recognised for championing unique and experimental British work alongside pieces from Australian and African artists. And, that’s not to mention the return of our Recent Graduates’ Exhibition in its new premier location, featuring the most exciting names of 2015 emerging from the UK’s art schools – from exquisite charcoal portraiture and colossal abstract paintings to powerful and evocative concrete sculpture, it certainly promises to be a showstopper. Since the very first edition of the fair we’ve been on a mission to help as many people as possible to fall in love with art, and to prove that you don’t have to be a millionaire to become a collector. Despite the changing face of the fair itself, this remains at the very heart of what we do. We’re thrilled that we’ve initiated so many of you into the art world, and introduced you to the joys of collecting original art. Enjoy the fair! Nicky Wheeler, Fair Director

TIRED OF LONDON, TIRED OF LIFE The London landscape has, for centuries, provided an endless source of inspiration for artists all over the globe. Canaletto, best known for his idyllic Venetian canal paintings, made a decade-long pilgrimage to England in the 1750s, whilst Monet made several trips to the capital at the turn of

the 20th century, producing shimmering homages to the city, including his iconic Houses of Parliament series. British favourite J.M.W. Turner is well known for his atmospheric London scenes, whilst Whistler’s much-loved oil paintings of the capital (including, famously, our very local Battersea Bridge!) provide a personal, alternative view of late-Victorian London. Contemporary artists too continue to be inspired by the shifting shapes and creative heritage of the London landscape, including several of those you’ll find at the fair. We’ve been catching up with some of them to find out why London has such a strong hold over the artistic imagination.

For Habasco Gallery’s Herme Bellido, it’s the diversity and ever-changing nature of the city that makes London such a rich source of inspiration. She says, ‘I never cease to be surprised by how this vibrant city excites and provokes me. I find its contrasts, its variety, its multiculturalism, its grandeur, its beauty, and the abundance of people at all times and in all places enough reasons to want to work with it as a subject again and again.’ Born in Seville, Herme has experienced London in a number of different ways– as a student, as a tourist, and as a resident – so capturing views of the city is also a way of understanding her connection to the place, and recording treasured memories. Herme recalls, ‘Several of my works inspired by the Thames were born after encountering the most beautiful sunrise near Battersea. A truly magical moment, I wanted to try and reproduce the almost impossible colours I witnessed.’

The Thames also holds a particular appeal for oil painter Edward Noott – shown by John Noott Galleries – for whom the architecture of the city is a constant source of fascination and inspiration. He says, ‘I’m particularly drawn to the way space opens up over the Thames. From the denseness of the city buildings, one is suddenly exposed to light, space and atmosphere. With a horizon punctuated by such iconic and beautiful buildings as St. Paul’s and the Houses of Parliament, the possibilities are endless.’

For printmaker Paul Catherall, who exhibits with Artichoke, London’s landmarks held an undeniable appeal from a young age. He recalls, ‘I’ve always loved London – I even persuaded my parents to take me there for a few days holiday when I was a young teenager growing up in Coventry. I moved to the city permanently straight after graduating; at that point my work was mainly figurative, but I always had a strong appreciation of Modernist and Brutalist architecture. I felt particularly at home on the Southbank and always got a strange sense of nostalgia when going past Elephant and Castle… I slowly came to realise these places reminded me of my upbringing in the concrete jungle of Coventry.’ For Paul, this sense of place, simultaneously familiar and entirely new, is a key part of the appeal of London where the ever-changing landscape can take on a new significance for each individual.

Halfmoon Studio’s Gail Brodholt, however, is a Londoner through and through. For her, capturing London as the subject in her artworks is, first and foremost, a way of recording fleeting moments in the city’s architectural history. She says, ‘London is changing so quickly these days, it’s important to capture the views that are disappearing. My print ‘Factory Junction’ illustrates this pace of change – between the first sketching trip and producing the finished print, the huge iconic Battersea gasometer was demolished. Soon the view of the Power Station will also be completely obscured from this viewpoint as new buildings go up around it. I love that my works record particular times and places in London’s rich history.’ As Samuel Johnson famously said, ‘when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, ’ and here at the Affordable Art Fair, we certainly can’t think of any place we’d rather be!

CHARITY UPDATE: COOLTAN ARTS We’re delighted to welcome pioneering arts and mental health organisation CoolTan Arts, our 2015 charity partner, back to the fair this autumn. Emma Thatcher, of CoolTan, tells us about the exciting new developments for the charity since they joined us at our spring fair. “We were thrilled to be selected as the Affordable Art Fair’s charity partner, and back in March we had the opportunity to showcase some of the work created in our visual arts workshops to a wider audience. Weeks of excited preparation by CoolTan’s staff, participants and volunteers went into creating new artworks and discussing how best to exhibit our work. “Our finished stand was a beautifully colourful creation, replete with original works in oil, watercolour and pencil, as well as sculpture, prints and art books by many of our talented CoolTan artists. And, to help our fundraising efforts artworks were also generously donated to our stand by Vera Schuhmacher Fine Art, The Public House of Art, Transistor, and Hicks Gallery, who were all exhibiting at the fair.

“One of the highlights of the fair for us was the Charity Private View. It was such a busy, vibrant event, and we were thrilled to have our patron – artist Maggi Hambling – open the fair on our behalf. “Since the fair it’s been all go. From running a packed schedule of workshops at our arts centre, to working on several exhibitions, projects and walks – there’s certainly been a buzz about CoolTan this summer! Back in June we ran a Summer Solstice Midnight Walk, led by some of our wonderful volunteers, we learned about London’s hidden history, and celebrated by lighting candles by the Thames. Perhaps most excitingly for art lovers, we currently have an art exhibition in our gallery space, celebrating British black music, including icons from Desmond Dekker to Tinie Tempah. “We’re excited for what’s in store at the Affordable Art Fair this autumn. This time at the Charity Private View, we’re offering visitors the opportunity to transform themselves into some of our favourite creative heroes, from Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, to Yayoi Kusama with our fabulously fun CoolTan photo booth in the Education Space.”

ADD A SPLASH OF ART

We’ve caught up with some of our wonderful exhibitors to find out just how adding a splash of art can transform your space, and asked them to share their top tips for selecting and presenting your collection at home.

We’ve all had those moments, be it in a museum, gallery or art fair, of standing in front of an artwork and getting completely lost within it. Whether the piece evokes a powerful memory, sparks an emotional response, or simply entrances you with its beauty, it’s certainly a pretty special experience. So, we can’t think of many things that beat displaying your own art collection at home, and being able to appreciate that unique feeling every day.

As Eleni Duke, founder of East London’s Curious Duke Gallery, explains, it’s important initially to concentrate on how the artwork makes you feel rather than how well it matches your decor. She says, ‘when finding an artwork for your home, you shouldn’t select a work simply because it matches the furniture, it should be because you know you will enjoy living with that piece in your home; if the artwork inspires you it will enhance the atmosphere of your space. We say, buy your art first, and then buy the furniture to match!’

its surroundings. She suggests large-scale oil paintings, such as those by Charlotte Keates, work well in minimalist spaces, whilst more conceptual pieces, such as paintings by Ilona Szalay, can really come into their own against a more traditional backdrop.

3

Creative director of quirky Edinburgh-based Arusha Gallery, Agnieszka Prendota, often works directly with interior designers, and explains that when working on such projects she’s always left ‘in awe of the transformative power art has in interiors’. She continues, ‘art speaks volumes not only about the owner’s taste, but also about what moves them, what makes them laugh and think – it’s a way of truly personalising the space.’ For Agnieszka too, once you’ve fallen for an artwork, it’s vital to consider

Ultimately, however you add a splash of art to your home, as Rachel Hotchkiss – director of The Artful Project – says, art should be bought and displayed for love. She continues, ‘original art is the only thing that truly identifies your home. Almost everything else you own is mass produced. It’s actually a brave thing to do, to reveal who you are and what you like when someone walks over your threshold, but that can be so empowering, too!’ We hope you’ll discover plenty to explore and adore at the fair, and find that perfect piece to add a splash of art to your home.

RECENT GRADUATES: ONES TO WATCH This autumn we’re delighted once again to present our annual Recent Graduates’ Exhibition, featuring 23 of the brightest new names emerging from the UK’s art schools. Curated by Jessica Hall and Emma Mansell, the showcase provides a snapshot of some of the most exciting new contemporary work being produced today. And, with alumni of the exhibition including the likes of Julia Vogl, Martina Lindqvist, and Andrew Salgado – who, for instance, has gone on to have seven successive sell-out solo shows with his astonishingly visceral paintings – it’s a perfect opportunity to indulge in some serious talent spotting. Amongst this year’s graduates you’ll find Christine Leech and Matteo Allodi, both using concrete to produce powerful and intriguing sculptural work, and Libby Heaney who draws on her background in quantum physics to create her scientificallyinspired installations. Amongst the painters represented are Katherine Russell, who renders wonderfully oblique scenes in oils, focusing on subtle colouration and dramatic lighting, and Rene Gonzalez, who often evokes seminal political or scientific figures and ideas in his large, bold canvases.

1

Also included this year is Suzi Morris, whose colossal, abstract oil paintings were showcased as part of the 2013 edition of the Recent Graduates’ Exhibition. We’re delighted to welcome Suzi back to showcase her new work as she undertakes her Professional Doctorate. Suzi recalls, ‘When I was first selected for the Recent Graduates’ Exhibition after completing my MA, it was an amazing experience. I’ll never forget the Private View evening, and meeting so many people who were interested in my paintings. It was quite surreal really, and very meaningful, that so many people could connect with what is ultimately an intimate reflection of my own experiences of being human. I’m even more excited to be coming back to Battersea this year to launch my new work based on my doctorate proposal, The Viral Sublime.’ Take a sneak peek at some of our Recent Graduates’ profiles overleaf, and remember, you saw them here first!

RECENT GRADUATES: ONES TO WATCH

DYLAN ANDREWS, BA Drawing and Applied Arts, University of the West of England How would you sum up your work? Monochromatic portraiture, where figures are contorted through light and shade. How do you create one of your works? I begin by taking several photographs of the subject, experimenting with various lighting and shadow effects until I have achieved an image that I’m happy with. I then map out the image onto paper, filling out the details using charcoal, blending tools and a rubber. How do you select your subject matter? A lot of my images are self portraits; I use them as a way of expressing my current mood. Biggest inspiration behind your work? My work is inspired by my own life experiences. The contrast between negative and positive periods of my life is what initially inspired me to experiment with light and shadow in my drawing. I love Shaun Hick’s quote, ‘you need to spend time crawling alone through shadows to truly appreciate what it is to stand in the sun’.

LUCY SMALLBONE, BA Fine Art Painting, City & Guilds of London Art School How would you sum up your work? Strange worlds interrupted by paint. How do you create one of your works? I start by collecting lots of images of unusual landscapes – ice caves, swamps, deserts. I play around with the images, trying to make the space feel as though it might collapse or change in an instant, then I develop the works in paint. How do you select your subject matter? It tends to come about in themes of colours and spaces; at the moment it is flowing between swamps and forests, to canyons and edges. Who is the biggest inspiration behind your work? I’m mostly inspired by things I read. I take a lot of inspiration from science fiction writers, such as J.G. Ballard.

Best moment of your art career so far? My degree show – it was such a great feeling to see how much my work had progressed during the three years I was studying.

Best moment of your art career so far? I’m hoping it’s to come next year – I recently won a university travel prize to go to Chernobyl.

What are you most looking forward to whilst showing at the Affordable Art Fair? I’m most looking forward to showing my self portraits at the fair, as they are my most personal and intimate pieces – it’ll be interesting to see how visitors respond to them!

What are you most looking forward to whilst showing at the Affordable Art Fair? I love that the fair is more about art lovers than the art market, so my work will be seen by people who love art and discovering new work, rather than people just focusing on trends and financial investments!

6

5

DEXTER GONZALEZ BA Painting, University of Brighton How would you sum up your work? My paintings challenge traditional genres and ideas. How do you create one of your artworks? The process itself is fairly traditional; I work in oil paint on canvas. By limiting my materials, I am able to explore more deeply the process of mark making, and the effect that can have on what is being depicted. How do you select your subject matter? The subject matter is essentially a visual diary, from a singular point of view. The correlation between my artworks can be found more in the way the objects or scenes are presented and composed, rather than the objects themselves. Biggest inspiration behind your work? I like to read, and I like to look. I’m interested in anything that explores the reconstruction of reality – how it is perceived and recorded, and how it can be interpreted or misinterpreted. Best moment of your art career so far? Being able to make time to really focus on painting!

7

What are you most look forward to whilst showing at the Affordable Art Fair? Seeing a place filled with art and people who appreciate it!
