Hello, and welcome once again to Battersea, for another instalment of the Affordable Art Fair. It certainly feels like Battersea is the place to be right now. As development of the iconic power station begins to make progress, the area is experiencing something of a renaissance. Since the Royal College of Art opened its new building in 2012, we’ve now had a spate of galleries opening up in the area, Gordon Ramsay has arrived with the opening of his highly acclaimed new restaurant, London House. Even Victoria Beckham has bought a local property in order to cement her burgeoning fashion empire – golly! We hope you’re as excited about this edition of the fair as we are. It may be almost exactly a month since Valentine’s Day but it seems like love is still in the air here at the Affordable Art Fair. On pages four and five of this guide, we examine the relationship between art and love, hearing from gallerists who set up their businesses out of an undying passion for art. Then, on pages eight and nine, we introduce a few new faces to the fair – giving you the lowdown on the latest galleries making the journey to Battersea from as far afield as Holland, Japan, and, er, Maida Vale. We hope you’ll make them feel right at home! We’re not the only ones feeling optimistic. 2014 got off to a bang with record-breaking art sales at Christie’s in January, including a Juan Gris painting for a whopping £35 million. As the wider UK economy begins to pick up too, it feels like the tide has finally turned since the banking crash of 2008. The signs are there for us too: the Autumn fair saw no less than 22,000 visitors, and sales stood at £5.1 million, the highest at any Affordable Art Fair in the world ever, showing the appeal that owning contemporary art has for us everyday folk.

Barack Obama has recently landed himself in hot water for apparently dismissing the importance of art history degrees. “Folks can make a lot more potentially with skilled manufacturing or the trades, than they might with an art history degree,” he told a crowd in Wisconsin last month. Predictably, there’s been quite a backlash, but it is the US President’s next line that is perhaps more interesting: “Now, nothing wrong with an art history degree,” he said. “I love art history.” The proximity of the words “art” and “love” says so much about how important art is for so many people, and it’s a theme especially in evidence this March. Affordable Art Fair is always full of people who genuinely love what they do. But it’s not just the artists themselves, but it's curators, collectors and gallerists too.

Take Cynthia Corbett for example. Despite a successful career as an international economist, she decided to downsize her house, and embark on a course at Christie’s to study, you guessed it, art history. “I was always passionate about art,” she says, “and wherever I travelled in the world, I was always looking at art, and collecting it when I could.” She founded her gallery in 2004, and is bringing an eclectic mix of art to the fair, from new editioned screenprints by Deborah Azzopardi (whose paintings now sell for up to £150,000) to brightly coloured scenes of Modernist architecture by Andy Burgess.

Deborah Azzopardi. Girl With The Diamond Earring. Silkscreen with diamond dust. 133 x 77cm. Edition of 15. £4,000. Cynthia Corbett Gallery.

Such enthusiasm is also obvious when you speak to either Colin Neville, who runs Neville Contemporary Art with his wife Sara, or Johnny Gorman, who runs Quantum Contemporary Art out of a converted Victorian laundry just a couple of blocks away from Battersea Park. Quantum is bringing a particularly strong set of painters, with an emphasis on nature (such as Prince Charles’s favourite artist, Kate Montgomery, and BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year, Hazel Mountford). Neville Contemporary has a wide range, from Andrew Dillon’s fantasy oils to Nikki Taylor’s sensuous wire-mesh figures. By coincidence, both Colin and Johnny served in the army, but left to pursue their dreams of working in the arts. For both, art has been a lifelong love: Johnny puts it down to an inspiring art teacher (“although,” he says, “I have no artistic talent whatsoever!”). Colin, meanwhile, recalls: “during my military service I was the only young officer in my regiment who had pictures of birds and wildlife on my walls. This hobby grew into a business which then became our way of life.” Both Colin and Cynthia run their galleries from their respective homes. Cynthia explains that because she has to live with so much of the work on a daily basis, she only represents artists she genuinely believes in: “I own work by pretty much all the artists I represent,” she says. As Colin puts it: “what drives me is spotting new talent that resonates, work that sings, and leaves a lasting impression.” All of the gallerists here at AAF are equally passionate about the work they’re bringing to the fair, so much so that asking them to pick out highlights is like asking them to pick a favourite child! But all are adamant that buying art is first and foremost about what you fall in love with yourself.

Project Space Collective 6

Exciting developments are afoot at Affordable Art Fair this March. You may well have noticed something a little different going on as you made your way into the marquee. And that’s because this instalment of the fair sees the launch of our brand new Project Space Collective – a chance for specially invited galleries to showcase the kinds of works that you might not necessarily expect at AAF: multimedia installations, curated exhibitions or solo presentations designed to allow the vision of a single artist to really shine through.

Elsewhere throughout the Project Space, Jotta Contemporary has brought together works by artists exploring ideas of familiarity and alienation; Slate Projects reintroduces the handmade into contemporary photography through the works of Gareth Berwyn, Tamsin Relly, and Rankle & Reynolds; and Knight Webb Gallery is continuing its celebrated series of offsite projects known as The Brixton Experiment with works including those by Polish artist Stanislaw Wojcik and Adjani Okpu-Egbe from Cameroon.

For this first edition, we’re delighted to welcome an eclectic mix of organisations and artists: from the pioneering Kinetica Museum, focusing on new media art and works that whizz and whirr, to Manchesterbased PAPER, who is exploring the lasting legacy of the Surrealists on contemporary artists. Most eye-catching of all perhaps is Dean Brierley’s ChromaFlair, hosted by the cutting edge Deptford-based gallery, Bearspace. Brierley has transformed the space into a rave venue in order to showcase watercolours and paintings in a context that is, to say the very least, out of their comfort zones!

As well as providing visitors the opportunity to find and fall in love with works of art, we’ve always seen the fair as an important part of the art ecosystem: championing artists through exposure to new audiences, and hopefully a sale or two. This kind of boost is especially important for artists who are early in their careers or producing work that is particularly experimental or unusual. The Project Space Collective allows us to open up these opportunities to some of the most exciting artists and galleries around, whilst also providing something a little bit different for our visitors as well.

New Faces

This year, we’ve picked out four of the new recruits for you to look out for. We hope you’ll make them feel right at home!

Galerie Nummer40 Doetinchem, Holland

Who? Jeroen Krak collected art for ten years before deciding to set up his own gallery in 2009. Since then NUMMER40 has shown at Affordable Art Fairs across Europe and Jeroen is excited to introduce his artists to a new audience here in Battersea. What to look out for? Nummer40 focuses on abstract sculptural works made out of unusual materials such as glass and ceramics. This March, their stand includes Sarinda Jones’ minimalist glass pieces, Mari-Ruth Oda’s anthropomorphic ceramics, and Javier Soto Nantes’ Basqueinspired alabaster sculptures illuminated by LEDs.

FitzRoy Knox New York, USA

Who? Julia FitzRoy and Laurie Carroll are among a new breed of market-savvy young gallerists who do not have a permanent space. Since launching in 2012, they combine a strong online presence with a programme of pop-up projects and an increasingly busy calendar of fairs such as AAF in order, as Laurie puts it, to “bring art to the people”.

8

What to look out for? For their its foray outside the United States, FitzRoy Knox is showcasing a diverse mix of artists. As well as paintings by husband and wife duo Signe and Genna Grushovenko, the gallery is presenting the beautifully nostalgic photographic works of Christine Flynn alongside painstakingly handcut paper pieces by Donna Ruff.

Javier Soto Nantes. Unidad Volumetrica No.84. Cut, assembled alabaster and LED lighting. 25 x 25 x 17cm. £1,425. Galerie Nummer40.

Thomas & Paul Maida Vale, London

David Storey. The Conversation. Oil on board. 27 x 37cm. £1,200. Thomas & Paul. Christine Flynn. Ace. Photograph with mixed media and resin finish.117 x 117cm. £3,200. FitzRoy Knox. Natsuko Tatsumi. Lady and Gentleman. Acrylic on canvas. 91 x 72cm (each). £1,000 (each). Giant Mango.

Who? Thomas and Paul grew out of The Art Collective, an initiative founded by Pauline Richards and Lyn Thomas to promote the work of emerging artists alongside more established names. In 2013, they opened their permanent space in Maida Vale – not far from the canals of Little Venice – and it even has its own dedicated reading room. What to look out for? “We look for art that has originality alongside incredible artists’ skills in draughtsmanship,” says Pauline. These qualities are in evidence in the work of the artists on show at Affordable Art Fair including sculptor Jilly Sutton and painters Lance Hewison, Sarah Lee and David Storey (whose work is currently being used to promote the comeback of the singers from The Beautiful South).

Giant Mango Yokohama, Japan

Who? Opened in 2009 by Jun Kurazume, Giant Mango combines exhibitions and consultancy with fairs and even art classes. And the brilliant name? As Jun explains: “I’m a bi-racial product of Miyazaki, Japan and the Philippines, two regions known for their mango fruits!” What to look out for? Giant Mango is introducing six Japanese artists to the UK for the first time, with work across a range of media. Jun hopes visitors will enjoy a selection of “honed artwork depicted in unique colors, refined in its form and without superfluity”. 9

Neurobiologists have shown that viewing art stimulates areas of the brain similar to feelings of love and desire. But what would happen if the tables were turned, and the artworks were choosing their owners, rather than the other way round? We take a tongue-in-cheek look at this burning question!

Someone to put my heart in a spin Chuck Elliott. Radial / Three / Pearlescent (detail). Metallic lambda print. 100 x 78 cm. Edition of 8. £3,950. Transistor.

Fair first-timers Never been to an art fair before? Well, no worries! We’ve got it covered. Here’s our all-you-need-to-know guide to exploring an Affordable Art Fair.

Grab a guide Flick through this guide to get to grips with the layout and as you wander around, make notes on galleries and pieces you like, including the name of the gallery, its stand number, the artist’s name, size, and price. Or if available, simply pick up the gallery’s card. Speak up If you find something you particularly like, ask questions! The best way to find out more about an artist or a specific work is to chat to the gallerist about them. You will find them an exceedingly knowledgeable bunch and more than happy to impart their wisdom. And if you have an insatiable desire to know even more, then you could sign up to their mailing lists to be kept up to date with all arty goings-on. This isn’t speed-dating Once you’ve had a proper good look around, it can be helpful to take a break and mull over your choices. Have a glass of wine, chitchat with friends and return to your favourite pieces

with fresh eyes. You only get one chance to buy an original artwork, so if you really fall in love with something then our best advice is to just go for it! Haven’t seen it all? Ask our lovely fair assistants or our info desk staff for a re-entry slip so you can come back and enjoy the fair on another day. No rush. Own art Affordable is our name, and affordable is very much our aim, but sometimes you might find yourself falling for something outside your budget. Fear not! If you do tumble head over heels for something, many of our exhibiting galleries are part of the Own Art Scheme, which allows you to arrange payment in more manageable instalments. And even if they’re not, many galleries run their own schemes, so it’s always worth asking. Have fun! Our golden nugget of advice for first timers? Art is FUN! Enjoy yourself and get involved with all that we have to offer: join in one of our workshops, meet an artist, chat with someone new, participate in a discussion and generally just have a grand old time.

This is how we roll laithwaites.co.uk
