The oldest film festival in Hong Kong has been the Alliance Française’s flagship event on the city’s vibrant cultural agenda. French cinema is celebrated for its esthetics, emotion and intelligence. The excellent image enjoyed by the French cinema worldwide is confirmed in Hong Kong where the acquisition of French films by local distributors has grown steadily in recent years. 2019 marks the 60 th anniversary of the French New Wave: one of the most influential movements in the history of cinema. In celebration of this important milestone, this year’s retrospective programme will be dedicated to the French New Wave. One of the highlights will be the photography exhibition Images of the French New Wave by Raymond Cauchetier, at the Hong Kong Arts Centre. We are pleased to invite you to rediscover the iconic actors and directors through the camera of the set photographer of the French New Wave era.

Our selection this year invites you to embark on an extraordinary cinematic and photographic journey to discover the best and latest French cinema as well as revisiting the classics from French New Wave.

In total, we will have more than 40 movies with about 100 screenings in various cinemas of HK.

About the French Cinepanorama 關於香港法國電影節
As a pioneer of Hong Kong’s film festivals, Alliance Française de Hong Kong has screened over 1,600 acclaimed French films since 1953. The 48th edition will continue to bring the latest and best of French Cinema to Hong Kong film lovers. 香港法國文化協會作為香港電影節的先鋒，自 1953 年起已在香港已展映超過一千六百部法國電影。 第四十八屆電影節將繼續為香港觀眾帶來最新、最經典的法國電影。
How Did It Start? 源起 Alliance Française de Hong Kong has been committed to the promotion of French cinema since its very inception; when it was established in 1953, the very first French Film Festival was also organised. That 1953 edition was the pioneering film festival in Hong Kong, making it the oldest celebration of film in the city. Since then, the festival has always brought the latest French films to Hong Kong. 自 1953 年創立以來舉行第一屆法國電影節開始，香港法國文化協會一直堅負推展法國電影的重任。同年便舉辦了 第一屆法國電影節，是香港電影節的先驅，亦因此是香港歷史最悠久的電影節。自此，法國電影節不斷為香港大眾帶 來最新的法國電影。
More Than 47 Editions Of The Festival 超過四十七屆電影節 Since 1972, Alliance Française de Hong Kong has collaborated with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), and made the film festival an annual event. Thus far, the festival has screened more than 1,600 French films, attracted a diversified audience, ranging from cinema lovers to the general public, and even some Hong Kong artists and directors who have had their first exposure to French cinema through the festival. 自 1972 年起，香港法國電影節與康樂及文化事務署合作，成為每年舉行的年度電影盛事。香港法國電影節至今已 放映了過千齣法國電影，由電影發燒友到普羅大眾，吸引了廣泛的觀眾入場觀賞，當中更包括一些透過本電影節首次 接觸法國電影的香港藝人及導演。

On the occasion of the 48 th French Film Festival in Hong Kong celebrating the 60 th anniversary of the French New Wave, I am honoured to be here today as one of those filmmakers who, although a child at the time and far away from France, was indelibly and inexorably influenced for an eternity by that wave. Like waves in the sea, it started small — its existence tenuous and unclear, yet it grew and grew and spread further and further afield. It is hard to see and understand a new cinematic movement when it is unfolding, yet from those humble beginnings some of the great names of French cinema emerged: Chabrol, Godard, and Truffaut inspired young filmmakers worldwide. The French New Wave was a liberation — optimistic and evolving, mind opening and mind altering; undulating while moving forward. To embrace it, one needs to grasp the dialectic nature of cinema — one must live rather than last. In the days ahead experience your own new wave — be inspired and enjoy the many new and classic French films on offer at the Festival.

Pierre-François Martin-Laval Fahim, the Little Chess Prince 走佬小棋王 Born in Marseille in 1968, Pierre-François Martin-Laval is an actor, film director, screenwriter and theatre director. In his teens he attended theatre workshops in Marseille, before moving to Paris to study acting at the famous French school of acting “Cours Florent”, where he met some close friends, and formed the acting group “Les Robins des Bois” (The Robinhoods). Initially called The Royal Imperial Green Rabbit Company, they renamed themselves after their first significant success, a play entitled “Robins des bois”. Twenty five years later, Pierre-François Martin-Laval still works with them. He says he is equally at home working in theatre, cinema and television. Pierre-François Martin-Laval is known for his works “Asterix and Obelix Meet Cleopatra” (2002), “RRRrrrr!!!” (2004), and “Try Me” (2006). Pierre-François Martin-Laval is known for his sense of humor. He wanted to make an adaptation of the comic book “Gaston Lagaffe”, instead of conventionally presenting his project, he and his crew dressed up as characters from the comic strip and rented an old Fiat 590 similar to that of Lagaffe’s. Then, they went to see the publisher and simulated a huge Gaston Lagaffe-style incident in front of him. Artists, factory workers, office employees, students and others open up to the camera to share their experiences, fears and aspirations. Jules et Jim
Cleo, a young and pretty singer, waits for the results of medical tests. From superstition to fear, from the Rue de Rivoli to the Café du Dôme, from coquetry to anxiety, from her apartment to Parc Montsouris, Cleo lives through ninety peculiar minutes. Her encounter with her lover, a musician accompanist, a female friend, and then a soldier open up her eyes to the world.
From the time of their meeting in 1912, Jules and Jim share a close friendship. Shortly before the First World War, Jules marries Catherine, a wilful young woman the two men have befriended, but, after the war has ended, his relationship with her deteriorates rapidly. When Jim comes to stay with the couple, he begins a relationship of his own with Catherine, having been urged to do so by Jules, who hopes that if his wife is involved with his friend she will not leave him.

Her brother, Pierre, takes her to a friend’s party where the guests include Philip, an expatriate American, and Gerard, a theatre director who arrives with a mysterious woman Terry. The talk of the party is the apparent suicide of their friend Juan, a Spanish activist who had recently broken up with Terry. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the New Wave movement was spearheaded by Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, and was defined by a group of experimental directors that shocked the cinematic world and left remarkable, timeless and iconic films in their wake. Raymond Cauchetier was a film set photographer for some of the most important films of the French New Wave. His work thus serves as a witness of the symbolic, energetic and experimental film era. Not only is it a rare insight into the iconic French cinematic movement, it is also a recognition of Cauchetier’s work that has been way overdue. 法國新浪潮六十週年 — 新浪潮電影劇照展 2019 年除了迎來第四十八屆香港法國電影節，更是法國電影 新浪潮六十週年。今年電影節將特此舉辦法國新浪潮電影劇 照展，並於香港藝術中心展出著名新浪潮的攝影師 Raymond Cauchetier 的作品。 五十年代末六十年代初興起的法國電影新浪潮永遠改寫了電影 的歷史。由尚盧高達和杜魯福作開路先鋒，一班原創導演以桀 傲創新的手法創作了一些永垂不朽和具標誌性的電影。攝影師 Raymond Cauchetier 利用他的照相機紀錄了電影新潮浪整個 戲劇化和的璀璨歷史進程，他拍攝了無數經典照片，見證了一 個具象徵意義，充滿活力和實驗性的時代。然而，Cauchetier 的創作人身份在過去幾十年來卻總是得不到應有的榮譽。現 在，他對電影史那不可磨滅和寶貴的貢獻最終得到了認同。 我們誠意邀請您親臨香港藝術中心舉辦的攝影展，欣賞當年新 浪潮明星和導演之風采。這次展覽將為您提供探索電影世界遺 產珍品的機會。 高達、杜魯福和珍摩露的粉絲，這個展覽會 讓你興奮不已！
