Today is the culmination of a magnificent year of sport in the MPNFL, with premierships already being won in football and netball across both divisions. Congratulations to Dromana on winning the Bendigo Bank Division Two grand final against Red Hill last week, earning promotion, and entering the top flight on the Peninsula for the first time since playing A Grade in the MPFL in 1952. Congratulations also go to Karingal who took out the reserves and under-19 titles, adding to an equally impressive performance on the netball courts at Somerville a week earlier. Karingal broke a heart-breaking run of losses with victory in the A Grade grand final against Crib Point, and secured the C Grade premiership as well. And last Sunday at Jubilee Park we witnessed a great achievement from Edithvale-Aspendale who won its fifth-consecutive A Grade premiership with victory over Sorrento. The overall strength of Edi-Asp was on show, with the club winning three of the four premierships on offer. We have had a wonderful year of men’s and women’s football and netball, with the MPNFL seen as an outstanding competition in both sports. People outside our league often comment to me how fortunate we are to

have such a strong and even competition. Divisions 1 and 2 have been super competitive this season. The newly-implemented divisional structure has supported clubs at the other end of the scale as well. It was pleasing to see Tyabb win six games this year – as many as they have won in the last six years combined. And it was good to see Langwarrin, Chelsea and Karingal all playing finals again after a long absence. I would particularly like to thank our host clubs through the finals so far. Today we celebrate the season at Frankston Park, however to the Rye, Chelsea, Hastings, Somerville and Mornington clubs I say thank you. We have had record takings so far bringing financial benefit to the league and to the clubs. I would like to thank Frankston City Council, including Mayor Cr Colin Hampton, for its on-going support in hosting the MPNFL Grand Finals at Frankston Park. I ask everyone who attends today’s grand final, the coaches, officials, players and spectators, to keep one thing at the forefront of their mind while at the finals. Respect the game - this is sport - this is fun! The expectation is that the game is treated in a respectful manner both inside and outside the fence. Players should always play by the rules and support and encourage their teammates. To the umpires who have been selected to officiate in these big games, congratulations on your appointments and we wish you well. Football and netball are two difficult games to officiate. Split-second decisions are made and we implore the sporting community as a whole to respect the umpire’s decision at all times. AFL Vic Country AFL Victoria would like to wish all teams competing in grand finals in the AFL South East Region the best of luck this weekend. The South East Football Netball League grand final between Berwick and Narre Warren should be a thoroughly absorbing affair with both teams having the upper hand at different stages of the season. Narre Warren will be searching for its first premiership since 2013 while Berwick is looking for back-to-back flags and its third success in four years. Good luck to both coaches, Matt Shinners from Narre Warren and Stewart Kemperman from Berwick, as they look build on previous success with the clubs. The four power clubs in SEFNL, Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren, will battle it out in the reserves and under 19s. And Pines will be out to end a long premiership drought that extends all the way back to 1994 when the Pythons take on perennial powerhouse Sorrento in the MPNFL Division One Grand Final. Pines has been knocking on the door for some years and gets the chance to lift the silverware after an impressive second semi-final victory against the Sharks two weeks back. Sorrento has made a seamless transition from the second to top flight of the MPNFL and will be looking to build on a strong recent run of success, winning last year’s Nepean/ Division Two grand final at this Sunday’s venue – Frankston Park. Good luck to Pines coach Paddy Swayn and Sorrento’s Luke Tapscott. Edithvale-Aspendale, Frankston YCW and Mt Eliza will battle it out in the all-important curtain raisers. AFL9s is back in 2018! AFL Victoria is pleased to announce registrations for the 2018 AFL9s Spring season will be released this month! Australian Rules football’s favourite social version of the game returns with a new season of AFL 9s kicking off in October. REGISTER your team at afl9s. com.au Pies claim inaugural Victorian Wheelchair Football League premiership The Collingwood Magpies have made history, after securing the inaugural Robert Rose Foundation Victorian Wheelchair Football League premiership. Played in front of a packed house at Boroondara Sports Complex, the Pies ran out comfortable 60 points winners over a spirited Richmond outfit. The game started with a whirlwind first quarter. Collingwood’s Richard Amon scored three first quarter goals, while across half-back, teammate Orfeo Cecconato dominated taking numerous marks. His opponent Riley Fitzgerald was pivotal for his team, scoring Richmond’s first goal of the match. The Pies went into half time with a 36-point lead after Amon continued his dominance in the forward line, scoring three goals for the second quarter, to take his total to six majors for the half. Cecconato continued to dominate across half back, with four marks and three key smothers. The midfield battle between the Pies’ Mark Walker and the Tigers’ Nathan Wilburn was hard fought. Adam Georgelin scored the Tigers’ second and proved elusive across the forward line. Brett Newman added two more to the Pies tally to give them a 65-point three-quarter time lead. The Tigers’ inaccuracy up forward proved costly, while the Pies backmen in Brendan Stroud and Cecconato seemed too strong to overcome. The final score 13.4.82 def 2.10.22) Despite the result, Richmond’s Judeland Antony, Tim Nield and Yasmina McGlone produced solid performances, while Captain Matt Morris lead from the front. No finals in the MPNFL will be replayed. In the case of a draw, extra time will be played. If scores are level at the completion of the fourth quarter the field umpires shall direct the goal umpires to confirm the correct score. • Coaches are not permitted to address their players between the end of the fourth quarter and the start of extra time, nor between any periods of extra time. • Once scores are confirmed the ball shall be returned to the centre of the ground and the game will continue for two five-minute halves (with time on). • Each team shall kick in the same direction as they did in the fourth quarter for the first half of extra time. Teams will change ends for the second half of extra time. • If scores remain level after two five-minute periods, a further two five-minute periods (with time on) will be played with clubs changing ends after the first fiveminute period. • This process will continue until there is a result.

Footy Preview All the hallmarks of a classic By David Nagel Two wonderful football teams in Pines and Sorrento will vie for the glorious title of ‘Kings of Peninsula Football’ when the Pythons and Sharks collide in Sunday’s Chisholm MPNFL Division One Grand Final at Frankston Park. The oval at Kars Street has become the judgement-place of Peninsula football over the years where brave and heroic acts have lifted great teams to the most special feeling in sport. It was that way in 1994, when Leigh Carpenter led Pines to its last premiership success, and rolled all the way through to 2017 when Troy Schwarze helped Sorrento to its most recent triumph. And it will most certainly be that way again in 2018. The balance between belief and vulnerability, both physically and mentally, gets tested like never before on grand final day, in front of a huge crowd, with so much on the line – at the mecca of local football. Will it be Pines’ coach Paddy Swayn, and his 22 charges that enter their names into the record books, or will Sharks’ playing-coach Luke Tapscott play a key role in Sorrento’s seventh premiership in 11 years? This grand final – well it has all the hallmarks of a classic! Frankston YCW has taken the sting out of the last three premiership deciders – being dominant on grand final day – but the Pythons and Sharks looks set for a thrilling showdown for this year’s title. The Sharks finished top of the ladder but were rolled by the Pythons by 13 points in the second semi-final at Mornington, a result that seemed to raise more questions than provide answers to the local football community. Did the tight confines of Alexandra Park suit the Pythons, and will be they be able to run with either Sorrento or Mt Eliza at Frankston Park?

Will James Brigden take Aaron Edwards or Tim Bongetti in the Pines forward line?

The class of Perry Lewis-Smith will be crucial if Pines prevail. And does the week’s rest halt a momentum that has been building strongly in the second half of the season? The impact of ground dimensions will only be answered by what transpires on game day, but the ability to put the feet up and have a week’s rest has historically been the best way to win a premiership. And it will always be that way until hindsight makes its annual appearance at 5pm on Sunday. The match ups are intriguing. The all-important midfield battles will be intense, with league best and fairest winner Paul ‘Chewy’ Scanlon leading Luke Potts, Lachie Marshall and Perry Lewis-Smith into a key area for the Pythons. For Sorrento, Mitch Hallahan is one of the few midfielders in the competition to have the strength to go with Scanlon at the stoppages, while his brother James will be joined by Zach Byrns, Shannon Gladman, Tapscott, and the pacey Matt Dobrowolski in trying to pick apart the Pines’ on-ballers. Both teams have heavy scoring power and the work of the key defenders could decide this contest. Nick Marston and James Brigden will no doubt get the jobs on Pines’ dangermen Aaron Edwards and Tim Bongetti, with Daniel and Jackson Grant offering assistance. Guy Hendry will get a big job for the Pythons down back, as will Jacob Boyle, Jack Fisher and Daniel John, who looks the perfect match up for the dangerous Nick Corp. Will Chris Dawes play? Who goes to Leigh Poholke? And can Tapscott have enough influence up forward to kick the Sharks a winning score? It’s going to be memorable, a classic, a real test of character that will see only one team emerge as the champion team – the ‘Kings of Peninsula Football” – for 2018. Frankston Park will once again provide the perfect canvas for these great players to test their skills and entertain the crowd with some wonderful football. Good luck to both clubs, and spectators – just sit back and enjoy the pinnacle of local sport.

Reserves - Redlegs aiming for five in a row

By David Nagel Mt Eliza will be out to claim a remarkable fifth-consecutive premiership when the Redlegs take on Edithvale-Aspendale in the Chisholm MPNFL Division One Reserves Grand Final at Frankston Park. The Redlegs finished top of the table but face a huge challenge against the Eagles who defeated the reigning champs by 15 points in the second semi-final. Mt Eliza bounced back with a 44-point victory over Sorrento last week to set up a mouth-watering contest that should go all the way down to the wire. The Eagles began fast in the second semi, booting 5.2 to 1.2 in the opening term to have the minor premiers on the back foot. The hero was Liam Hulett, who booted five for the day, but the Eagles have a core group of players who have contributed greatly this season. Loughlin O’Connor, Steve Miller, Tim Yeowart and James Watterson have not missed a beat, while Jake O’Neill, Jeremy Heys and Danny McCarthy can provide support to Hulett in front of the big sticks. Mt Eliza showed its class with a six-goal second quarter against Sorrento last week and will fancy its chances of turning the tables on the Eagles this afternoon. Mitchell Chopping, Lyndon Curtis, Sam Howell and Nick McKinnon have been good players for the Redlegs this year, with Chopping, William Mace and Harrison Scott all capable of hitting the scoreboard. This one should be a beauty – but it’s the Redlegs to make it five consecutive premierships with an 11-point victory. Under 19s Two clubs that have shared the last six thirds premierships will take to the big stage once again when Mt Eliza and Frankston YCW fight for bragging rights in the Under 19s. The Redlegs have won four of the last six flags, but have a bitter taste in the mouth after the Stonecats prevailed in last year’s season decider. The Redlegs finished on top and gained a direct passage through to the big one, courtesy of a 27-point victory over Edi-Asp in the second semi-final. Things haven’t been so smooth for the Stonecats, losing the qualifying final to the Eagles before making amends with a comfortable victory over Mornington in the first semi. They progressed to the biggest day of the year with an 11-point victory over Edi-Asp, highlighted by a seven-goal haul to Josh O’Toole. The Stonecats have the league best and fairest winner in Josh Berenger, who will gain support from the likes of Caleb Douglas, Henry Vine and Sam Bryant. The Redlegs have an even spread with Kobe Dalais, Ben Webster, Michael West, Hayden Lobb and Aaron Foss all capable of pulling out big games. This will be a high-quality display of under-19 football – with the Redlegs to prevail by 13 points.

Umpires As all teams celebrate making grand finals, the umpires have also been nervously awaiting the announcements of the 2018 Grand Final Umpire Appointments. Grand Finals are something to be celebrated and on Wednesday 5 September the Southern Umpires Association (SUA) supported the announcement of 2018 Grand Final appointments with a special Grand Final Appointments and Life Members Night held at the Kananook training base. Congratulations to all umpires appointed across the nine grand finals. AFL South East along with the Southern Umpires Association are proud of all the umpires that will take to the field to represent the umpiring group.

We would also like to thank all umpires that have umpired throughout the 2018 season. Umpiring can be a tough job at times but is also thoroughly rewarding with the friendships made on the training track and through being involved with matches each weekend. With that we also are looking for new umpires to join our ranks in 2019. We now understand how hard it is to get here and are so grateful that we are part of the last day of the season. To all the people that have worked hard behind the scenes please be assured it has not gone unnoticed and the rewards will be felt tonight. To Paddy and the coaches who have worked all year on incremental improvements in preparation, training and game day. This has seen the team ready to peak at the right time. Thanks also to Dean for seamlessly entering the club and becoming a part of this journey. To our wonderful membership and sponsors who have stood proud through barren years, but never wavered from belief. Season 2018 has been a dramatic year of change for the Mt Eliza Football Netball Club both on and off the field . Our decision to focus internally and look at the development of local young players has seen a number of our under 19 boys play their first games of senior football for the Redlegs. The new divisional structure of our competition has improved the standard and quality of football in Division 1 and it has been a credit to our coaches and players on how they have adapted themselves to their respective grades. In particular our on field performances throughout the year have been recognised and resulted in us winning the Club Championship for Division 1 – Football, something we all should be proud of. I don’t think anyone internally or outside the club expected us have all three sides finish at the top of their respective competitions in 2018 and it gives us great hope for the future of our club.

This year has been a trying year for our Club, with a string of serious injuries severely impacting our senior side. That has of course put considerable strain on our Under 19 side. However, the situation has given a considerable number of our Under 19s some senior exposure this year. It is a credit to our Under 19s team good character, led by their coach Peter Falzon, that despite a very interrupted year with players in and out of the side they have made the Grand Final. Their diligence, boldness , creativity and toughness has gotten them to the main event. They are the future of our club we at YCW are very proud of them. Go Stonecats!! A Slice of MPNFL History Pythons hopeful that history will repeat By Doug Dyall Well here we are - the last day of MPNFL football for season 2018. We are left with two sides from opposite ends of the Peninsula; Sorrento, the champion of Nepean football over the past decade, up against Pines who has been less flattering with its performances over the same period of time. But today they meet on equal terms with only one being able to raise that precious premiership cup. If history can tell us anything, it will be Pines that hold aloft the cup today after winning four of the five games that these two clubs have ever played in. Apart from this year, where Pines holds a two-one advantage over Sorrento, we need to go back to 1984 when these two sides last met. It was the first season that Pines was promoted to then MPFL from NFL. Both games were won by Pines that year by huge margins with Sorrento eventually relegated and have not be seen at the higher level again until this season. Both teams have experienced dominance in their history. We all are aware of the Sorrento machine and how it has dominated Nepean Football over the last 10 years, winning

six flags and attracting high-profile recruits. But going back to the old Nepean League it was Pines who were the dominant team in the 15 years leading up to 1983 and their record as a club is very impressive. Seniors Premierships were won in 1976, 78, 80 and 83, with eight reserves titles gathered in 1974, 75, 76, 78, 79, 81, 82 and 1983. The club also won thirds premierships in 1970, 71, 72, 75, 80, 81, 82 and 83, and fourths success stories in 1981 and 82. Pines was so dominant in Nepean Football that it forced the hands of the two leagues to discuss the promotionrelegation system that came into force at the end of 1983 and stayed in place until 2002. This system obtained the objective in allowing clubs to rebuild when relegated and those who were promoted to test themselves against the best. The one thing these two clubs do have in common is that they have both made grand finals in their first year of promotion, with Pines playing off against Mornington in 1984 and Sorrento joining them today with that achievement. Good luck to both teams. Congratulations to Dromana Football Club on winning the Division Two Premiership and they will enter the top tier of football on the Peninsula for the first time since playing A Grade in the MPFL in 1952.
