elebrating 25 years in 2014, the Alliance Française French Film Festival (AF FFF) is the largest festival of French films outside of France. French culture, and in particular French cinema, has never been more popular in Australia than it is right now. The Alliance Française French Film Festival’s audience includes Australians, French, Francophiles and movie buffs - all keen to experience the latest sophisticated, vibrant and daring films from France, starring many of the greats of French cinema (Fanny Ardant, Juliette Binoche, Romain Duris, and so much more!) along with the works of respected directors (François Truffaut, Jacques Tati, Agnes Jaoui, Philippe Godeau…). The Festival will embody the diversity of French cinema through a fascinating program of 46 films. Besides the Opening and Closing Nights, a number of Special Events will take place at five cinemas across Melbourne: Palaces Balwyn, Brighton Bay, Westgarth, Como & Kino Cinemas.. MON ONCLE (1958) Drinks & canapés will be served prior to the screening.
With classic slapstick setpieces and wonderful scenes of inner and suburban Paris, Jacques Tati’s Mon Oncle is undoubtedly one of the most beloved comedies of all time. The characters are inspired by a true story in this emotionally involving film that will melt the hardest heart. It features moving and fully committed performances from a terrific cast, including Alexandra Lamy as Julien’s mother, Claire. With Rocky-esque training montages and nail-biting sequences in the stunning mountains of Nice (shot at the actual 2012 Ironman competition), director Nils Tavernier turns the conventions of the sports film on its head. gangly grace, Jacques Tati muddles bewilderedly through the most mechanical of homes, creating havoc along the way. Whether employed in Mr Arpel’s factory or helping Mrs Arpel host a garden party, Monsieur Hulot shows that a mod con is no match for an old pro! With the unmistakable combination of fedora, trenchcoat, umbrella and pipe, Mon Oncle marks the moment where the character of Monsieur Hulot went from cult figure to cultural icon. A massive international sensation on release, the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1958. Jessica Schoer Jessica Schoer (Photography) focuses on altered mental states that are caused by dreaming and illnesses. Drawing on her own experiences, she takes us into her mind and plants us into an al-

Schoer also focuses on the process of art making as a type of therapy and in turn we are able to be transported somewhere totally unique and able to escape into the mind of the artist.

Annalise Mayer Annalise Mayer’s work (Printmaking) explores the condition of modern time, playing with our understanding of the individual moment. Her interest lies in our species΄ innate desire to
understand our existence within the condition of time. This exploration extends to our inability to both capture and define a moment, causing great anxiety. Thus questioning the intangibility of time itself. Engaging with techniques such as lithography and naturalistic drawings, Mayer highlights the time often invested in the attempt to capture the fleeting. © Annalise Mayer

joined the Alliance Française de Melbourne. When first asked to run this Apéritif, Clémence’s first thoughts were how refreshing it would be to share this great tradition with Australians! Apéritif is important for a French person, a ritual during which friendships can blossom and the stress of the day easily forgotten. For Clémence,
apéritif is not just nibbling over a drink; it is sharing a moment with friends or strangers, enjoying good wine and delicious finger food. How about you? Wed 21 May 7pm-9pm For more information www.afmelbourne.com.au

private tuition Working in French overseas James M. had one week to learn and practice French before flying to Haiti for work. So he rang the Alliance franรงaise and attended classes every day as part of a private tuition package.
"
As a student, my experience in private tuition was entirely positive. Four-hour tutorials undertaken daily for a fortnight compelled me to rapidly incorporate new grammar and vocabulary. Reinforced by varied homework tasks, this intensive coursework enabled me to acquire and reinforce new learning very quickly.
At all times I found the administrative staff and my tutor to be responsive to my learning needs. After considered discussion with administrative staff and my AF tutor, the content of the tutorial was tailored to meet my work needs and I found the course content to be highly relevant and well adapted to the scenarios in which I may be speaking French. The one-on-one dynamic of a private tutorial session afforded a
great deal of flexibility in adapting course content to my specific needs, focusing attention where required at a pace that could be adjusted. This dynamic also compelled me to remain attentive and continue learning as the onus to engage in the tutorial remained solely on me." Berthe Mouchette Competition celebrating 120 years 2014 is an exciting year for the Berthe Mouchette Competition and we invite you to join us for our 120th birthday celebrations! This year also marks the 100th anniversary of World War I. In commemoration of this we would like to share with you the calligrammes of French poet and soldier, Guillaume Apollinaire, along with other poems centrally themed around “war & peace”. Each year over 13,000 Victorian Y3-12 students bring French poetry to life through recitals but the BMC is more than just a poetry competition. The Australian Minister of Veteran Affairs acknowledges that our poem selection this year fits with the spirit of the ANZAC Centenary commemorative program. Furthermore in light of the G20 visit in Brisbane, the French Embassy has selected to highlight
20 French cultural events across Australia, and we are thrilled to say that our BMC is one of them. Years 3-6 students can portray their impressions of the poems in our drawing competition, “J’illustre mon poème”. VCE preparation - oral conversation and written examinations. Prix Special des Ecoles Françaises – open to bilingual students Y3-12 attending French or Bilingual Schools in Victoria.
