In Extremis

From $40

at Melbourne Recital Centre

Clotilde Rullaud is a French Jazz singer/performer/ song-writer, coming from the new generation of French jazz musicians. Since her childhood, she has been fascinated by the greatest Jazzmen, especially singers. She went into music school at the age of 5, and studied the flute and singing for 15 years. She has always considered Jazz music as a large melting pot, a mix of influences

and cultures, confronting Afro-American music with Latin cultures, mixing African folklore and the art of the words. We can find all this in her music: a reinvention of the roots of Jazz, a desire for originality and freedom, where poetry and the musicality of the words have a prominent place. Brittany is a region on the far west side of France with more than 1000km of coastline. Therefore it is not surprising that its food and gastronomy are mainly based on quality fresh seafood. However, Bretagne (Brittany) is actually more famous for its musical traditions and sweet desserts

Digital revolution

at the Alliance française de Melbourne Outside school, students are constantly interacting with technology such as iPods, mobile phones, the internet and social networking sites. With this in mind it is little wonder that there are expectations for these technologies to support their learning in the classroom. Alliance française de Melbourne may be the oldest French Language School in Australia, but it is definitely keeping up-todate thanks to its dynamic team of teachers. In 2012, interactive whiteboards and projectors were installed in 6 classrooms and teachers

have been trained in order to learn how to use these new devices. What’s an interactive whiteboard? It is a display connected to a projector, and using specific software it reproduces a whiteboard and all other equipment needed to teach. It is like a giant computer with the program features of software like PowerPoint, Paint and Word all in one. Forget the markers and dusters, the dodgy CDs, even the more modern DVD player: the possibilities are endless thanks to the interactive whiteboards!

Before the end of 2013, Alliance Française de Melbourne is looking at acquiring interactive projectors – the future of interactive whiteboards – and in further training its teachers to not only know how to use the device, but also in how to create activities that will engage our students even more in class. Led by a team of qualified teachers, 2014 will open new horizons and bring even more success and popularity to our courses!

Carolyn Cardinet tue fri ‘Mémoire de Vie’ 08 08 oct nov to

‘Memory of life’

To be officially opened on Tuesday 8th Oct Carolyn Cardinet is a painter and sculptor whose works and inspiration are drawn from fragments of everyday life. A total ‘labour of love’ Cardinet’s tonal paintings speak of the transience of time. Some canvases have taken years to finish. In her recently completed series of work to be shown in October at the Alliance Française de Melbourne, her paintings are built up with many layers of images. She creates this density in her paintings by

superimposing abstract or patterned images over realistic images, reflecting the complexities of our lives, memories and thought processes. In her multi-disciplinary practice, Carolyn has also developed an interest in assemblages, created from salvaged materials found largely on the beaches and streets of the City of Port Philip. She says, “My intention is for the viewer to notice the banal and unnoticed discarded

objects that proliferate in our urban environment.”With minimum intervention from disregarded objects such as single-use packaging, these objects are re-embodied and transformed into new and imaginative compositions. By creating a sense of wonder in her work, Cardinet’s intention is to raise questions about the depletion of our environmental resources.

It is an official language in 28 countries, most of which form what is called in French La “Francophonie”; the community of French-speaking nations. Many large companies have benefited from the services and expertise of the Alliance Française de Melbourne

In doing so, they can gain a competitive edge in Francophone markets, enhance their business and travel experience in Frenchspeaking countries, improve communication with clients

and colleagues or simply foster team building within the company! As well as the many positive outcomes, there are many reasons to implement French classes within your business. Colette’s France her lives, her loves

charge payable on the night (includes cheese and wine) – cash only please

Colette’s France, to be published in October by Hardie Grant, is both a memoir and the extraordinary life story of Colette, who was as famous for her novels as she was for her often controversial life. Colette’s France presents Colette’s life through the many different places she lived: from her childhood in a small village in Burgundy, to her first marriage and the early beginnings of her literary career in Paris

of the Belle Époque, to her holiday houses in Brittany and Saint-Tropez. The multiple lives and loves of this indomitable woman are revealed – prodigious writer and journalist, risquÊ performer, lover and seducer, mother and loyal friend, and finally revered grand old lady of letters. Through the places of her heart, we come to know her.

RMIT Brandmark Clear space & Minimum size

Jane Gilmour lived in Paris from 1968-72, where she completed RMIT Brandmark The RMIT Brandmark is the key identifier of the university. The RMIT Brandmark is formed by two key elements: - the RMIT Wordmark - the RMIT Symbol

The relationship between these two elements is fixed and should never be separated or used as individual elements. It is essential that the brandmark is always reproduced from the digital art files supplied.

RMIT Symbol

Clear space The RMIT brandmark needs to be surrounded by an area of uninterrupted clear space to allow it to remain prominent on all communications.

VENUE HIRE

Clear space is the non-print area surrounding the brandmark. A basic formula had been used to calculate the minimum ‘clear space’– this can be used to determine clear space for the brandmark at any size.

No other graphic elements (such as photography or typography) should appear within this zone. Wherever possible, apply more clear space than the minimum specified in this guide. Minimum size To avoid any possible reproduction problems, the brandmark must never be produced at a size less than that shown opposite. the Village Roadshow Theatrette, State Library of Victoria

Adapted, staged and interpreted by Layla Metssitane from the famous Amélie Nothomb novel Stupeur et Tremblements (Fear and Trembling) honoured by the Académie Française prize in 1999. “Fear and Trembling is not an attack on the Japanese way of living, nor a value judgment. On the contrary,

it is a humble, funny and intelligent point of view from a young woman confronted with a new world. The message it carries could be: Let’s observe and listen carefully, before we hastily judge the Other. This is what we tried to do, in bringing Nothomb’s words on stage”. Layla Metssitane

Layla Metssitane As a French actress and director, Layla Metssitane created in 2006 the Théâtre des Hommes company with Xavier Carrar. It came about when these two actors met and discovered they shared a mutual love of both poetry and the stage. Naturally, the company’s raison d’être is to serve the authors and to bring their works to the stage, in front of an audience. Layla’s first creation with the company was Palabre en Négritude around Aimé Césaire. In 2007, she

wrote another play about the poetic works of Taslima Nasreen with three actresses in three different languages: French, Arabic and sign language. It wasn’t until the Avignon’s Off Festival in 2010 that she created this stage adaptation of Stupeur et Tremblements (Fear and Trembling) awarded as Best Selection by the press. As their first theatrical adaptation, the show has been a success and is currently on an international tour.

The Four Scoops are a combination of four unique working musicians from differing musical heritages bound by a love of back-beat groove. The group’s musical heritage harks back to a time of melting musical styles as Jazz met early Rock n Roll. Their repertoire is wide and varied from Blues shouters Winonie Harris to Jazz back beat legend Louis Jordan to Fifties crooners to Bolero versions of Cold Chisel and Dragon hits. The Four Scoops love of variety in tunes and grooves has its basis in the

diversity of the members. The group is led by trombonist & singer Ben Gillespie who has been making music in Melbourne for twenty five years, in addition to a heavy international touring schedule with other groups. Ben has played and recorded with the likes of Gotye, Eric Burdon, Isaac Hayes, Tim Rogers and The Australian Art Orchestra. Lyn Wallis has been drumming for more than 45 years and is an undisputed national treasure of New Orleans jazz and backbeat grooves. Lyn has

divided most of his musical life between Melbourne and Sydney performing most often with the Yarra Yarra jazz band, Roger Janes band and with Australian/American legend Tom Baker. He has also played with New Orleans legends trumpeter Alvin Alcorn and pianist Alton Purnell, a member of the famed George Lewis band. He lived and performed for three years throughout Europe and The United States with a wide variety of musicians. Booking essential online at: www.afmelbourne.com.au

If you look at the statistics of the courses offered for our youngsters here at the Alliance française de Melbourne, you will discover an incredible explosion not only in the number of children enrolled, or the number of courses on offer for them, but also in the number of teachers who are dedicated to teaching them.

ulum is implemented following the Project Smart Steps To French, a project developed by the group Alliance Enfance in the United States. This progression is based on respecting the pace of children according to criteria such as their ages, their levels, their interests or their motivations. From the age of 3, there are two dedicated programs

The younger, the better! How can we explain this boom? What are the ingredients that produce such great results? More and more parents are trusting us with their children, even their youngest ones. Therefore we decided to adapt and to diversify our offer for this young public. The progression of the curric-

suited to this age bracket: Les P’tits Loups or l’Heure du Conte ! From the beginning of Grade 1, there are several options available: A simple oral test with one of the teachers is organised to assess the level of the child and recommend the most suitable course. For Australian students, a

range of four different levels of courses is on offer, Children 1-4. The lessons take place in the classroom and focus on textbooks: either Alex and Zoe for younger students or Amis et Compagnie for more advanced students. Most of the classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards to offer fun and modern interactive learning! Classes run weekly for an hour and a half and allow for an effective balance between a focused learning time, in conjunction with games, songs, mimes, role plays, drama, arts and crafts… Parents can track their child’s progress through a summary of skills handed out at the end of each term. The Alliance offers a course for French-speaking children who are of French origin or from a French-speaking country, Australian-born children (or others) who have lived in France or a French-speaking country and who would like to continue learning French “à la française” (Enfants Francophones). In a one and a half hour class, children will study grammar, conjugation, spelling, and will even learn to read in French ... just like in school! Add to this the expertise, availability and kindness of our teachers, a joyous and relaxed atmosphere and a setting as beautiful as St. Kilda and the State Library: here is our recipe for success. Delicious and efficient! Timetable available online: www.afmelbourne.com.au

Dominique Dalbourg Dominique Dalbourg is a French artist currently living in New Caledonia, only 3 hours away by plane. Her artistic journey started in her childhood alongside her father, an artist who created his own enamels. She experimented with many different artistic techniques from all over the world, but it was in Melbourne a few years back that she discovered and fell in love with the beauty of making art with resins. After following a creative course in jewellery crafting, she chose to adopt the work of resins on painter’s cloth. It’s by working with these resins that Dominique winks

at her father. The icing and shiny finish as well as the transparency of these materials fondly remind her of the enamels her dad taught her how to make when she was a teenager. The shades of blue she particularly enjoys using represent the pacific ocean she lives close by to. The portrayal of islands and the sea floor are a big influence in her art, however she also draws her inspiration from the warm colours and shades of the Australian outback that she quite often visits, as well as flowers from Melbourne’s Botanical garden which she’s particularly fond of.

Intuitively, it was in Melbourne she wanted to come and present her recent work at the Alliance Francaise. It is hard to define Dominique’s work through a single academic style, but the people who know her work well call her “The Colourer”. You will discover her “transparence” and will certainly be tempted to dive into the warm waters she praises, and feel the need to breathe in the scent of her brush strokes moving in the wind.

For Alexandre, apéritif is synonymous with good wine, finger food and great atmosphere! How about you? 7.00pm-9.00pm Location to be confirmed, stay tuned! www.afmelbourne.com.au

Private tuition

James M. had a short time to practice French with his tutor Maite Dion-Larouche before flying to Haiti. Why did you choose to do private tuition? I chose private tuition as I believed it would be the most efficient means of developing my French language skills in the limited time I had available. How would you describe your experience as a student in private tuition? My experience in private tuition was entirely positive. Four hour tutorials undertaken daily for a fortnight compelled me to rapidly incorporate new grammar and vocabulary. Reinforced by varied homework tasks, this

intensive coursework enabled me to acquire and reinforce new learning very quickly. At all times I found the Alliance Française staff and my tutor to be responsive to my learning needs. The content of the tutorial was tailored to meet my work needs and I found the course content to be highly relevant and well adapted to the scenarios in which I may be speaking French. What was the best of your private tuition? The one on one dynamic of a private tutorial session afforded a great deal of flexibility in adapting course content to my specific needs, focusing attention where required at a pace that could be adjusted.

This dynamic also compelled me to remain attentive and continue learning . What would you recommend to someone interested in private tutoring? I would recommend careful consideration be given beforehand to what your learning objectives are and what content is most suitable to you. I would also recommend ensuring that sufficient time is allocated by themselves for homework tasks that will importantly reinforce their learning. For more info and to organise private tuition, please contact Elise Froumson at privatetuition@afmelbourne.com.au or call us on 9525 3463.
