Albert Camus centenary birth celebration Albert Camus would have been 100 years young in November 2013. The voice of the Nobel Prize winning author of “The Stranger” and “The Plague”, “The Myth of Sisyphus” and “The Rebel” remains as vital today as it was during his own lifetime. For lovers of the Absurd, the Alliance Francaise website has a dedicated section to
celebrate the life of Camus and his quest for meaning. We invite you to discover this great writer through articles, videos and radio programs and remind you that we have a selection of his works available in our multi-media library. Full details at afmelbourne.com.au

Opening: Tue 17 Dec 6.30pm to 8.00pm Free Admission
An exhibition by Gerard Timothy Dovey Gerard is a local Victorian artist, born in 1953 who completed a Master’s degree in mask theatre in the late 90s before retraining in visual arts specialising in print-making and drawing. He has worked extensively in theatre and visual arts. In this exhibition, the artist’s inspiration originates from three different elements. Jacques Brel’s song “Le plat pays” in which Brel sings lovingly of his homeland of Belgium through the winds blowing over the land, is used by the artist as a point departure and as a place of landing in advancing an under-
standing of our own unique landscape and the ways we use European culture in our attempts to understanding our new-found home in this great south-eastern corner of the Australian continent. The second influence for this show is some graffiti that can be found on the interior walls of the chapel in the grounds of the Hôpital S. Louis de la Salpetrière in Paris, crudely depicting tears flowing down the wall. The repetition and poignancy of the drawings moved Dovey deeply, and the tragic history of the building, including as a place of incarceration, can only heighten for him the deeply felt motives
of the unknown artist of the wall-piece. The third event which led the artist to make the work in this exhibition was a casual conversation he had many years ago with a Yorta Yorta man from north-west Victoria, who said that for him: “this southern country finds its unique character in the prevailing westerly winds, often cold, that can both caress as well as molest the flat lands.” The notion of wind as a definer of landscape, and that wind can symbolise the impermanence of human life in that landscape has stayed with Dovey ever since.

Maree Clarke is a Mutti Mutti, Yorta Yorta and BoonWurrung woman from Mildura in Northwest Victoria. She is a multi-disciplinary artist using multimedia installations of photography, painting and sculpture and she represents a pivotal figure in the reclamation of southeast Australian Aboriginal art practices, reviving elements of Aboriginal culture that were lost over the period of colonisation. Gratton Egan is a Wamba Wamba and Yotta Yotta artist. He started painting in 2008 and his work represents traditional animals, fish and landscapes. As a self-taught artist, he has been deeply influenced by Elders’ paintings over the years. Gratton currently resides in the Port Phillip region. Adam Magennis started his 30 year journey as a Boon Wurrung artist after this first group exhibition in 1983. His artistic style is influenced by the concept of cultural ecology and details the variances of how an individual’s surrounding universe is naturally connected. His works are a combination of graffiti, topographic and stratigraphic illustrations using a great diversity of materials to reflect the indigenous culture, people and landscapes. Bronwyn Raven Purrula is a Central Australian desert artist that has been painting since 1996 after winning the Yulara Art Award. Her work has been exhibited on several occasions, most notably in the 1997 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, in the Maritime Art Award and in addition she has a permanent exhibition at ‘Without Pier Gallery’ in Cheltenham. The paintings are an ancestral view of her family land using ancient iconography in ochre and contemporary colours. Uncle Leslie Stanley was born in Queensland in 1962. His family background is both in “Woka Woka” country and Yandruwanda South Australia Innaminka. His artwork mainly depicts native animals and sometimes scenery of bushland from his years of growing up in Queensland. He has developed his own style of artwork and techniques.
