WELCOME
FYCShowcase
TELEVISION/EMERGING MEDIA Welcome to the second issue of the Critics Choice Awards FYC Showcase. As a service to the membership, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) has partnered with Advertising For Media to create an advertorial guide that allows studios and networks to highlight films and shows we may be considering for our upcoming awards voting. CCA members know how challenging it is to stay on top of everything we might like to consider and this FYC Showcase helps the members see what many of the studios and networks are most proud of this year. The print version of the FYC Showcase is being sent to all CCA members at the start of our annual voting period. The digital version of the FYC Showcase will also be available online at www.criticschoice.com. 2020 was an incredibly eventful and challenging year, with the COVID-19 pandemic turning the world upside down. Seismic shifts continue to rattle the entertainment business as well, with a mighty array of streamers joining broadcast and cable networks and movie studios to provide much needed entertainment on a dizzying number of platforms. The job of informing our audiences about movies and television is harder than ever. Having a handy guide to some of the year’s best work is hopefully helpful in doing a diligent job of Critics Choice Awards voting. Winners of the 26th annual Critics’ Choice Awards will be revealed and celebrated live on The CW Television Network on March 7, 2021. I hope you will vote and watch this year - and then we can all gather together and do it in person as usual next time. Joey Berlin CEO Critics Choice Association

I’M NO LONGER HERE
SYNOPSIS: In the mountains of Monterrey, Mexico, a small street gang named “Los Terkos” spend their days listening to slowed
down cumbia music and attending dance parties. These different bands of disaffected youth refer to themselves as Kolombianos, combining the Cholo culture with Colombian music. Ulises Samperio, the leader of Los Terkos, tries to protect his friends from the nefarious elements of a quickly evolving drug/political war, but after a misunderstanding with a local cartel, he is forced to leave for Jackson Heights, a diverse immigrant community in NYC. Ulises tries to assimilate, but when he learns that his gang and the whole Kolombia culture is under threat, he questions his place in America and longs to return home.
CAST & CREW: I’m No Longer Here is written and directed by Fernando Frías De La Parra and stars Juan Daniel García,
Coral Puente, Leo Zapata, Jonathan Espinosa, Yahir Alday, Fanny Tovar, Leonardo Garza, Tabia Alvarado, and Yocelin Coronado.
PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION: I’m No Longer Here is produced by: Alberto Müffelmann, Fernando Frías De La Parra, Gerry Kim Gerardo Gatica. The Director of Photography is Damián García, the Production Designer is Taísa Malouf Rodrigues, Costume Design is by Malena de la Riva and Gabriela Fernandez, and is edited by Yibrán Asuad and Fernando Frías De La Parra. SUMMARY: I’m No Longer Here is director Fernando Frias de la Parra’s latest examination of misunderstood individuals, the kind
who are often left on the margins of history. Developed with the support of the prestigious Sundance Institute labs, the film went on to win the top prize at Morelia Film Festival and was eventually the winner of 10 Ariel Awards, Mexico’s highest cinema honor, including Best Picture. An intimate look at the immigrant experience, the film examines one young man’s longing to determine where he belongs in the world. I’m No Longer Here is Mexico’s official International Feature Film selection for the 93rd Academy Awards.

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH
SYNOPSIS: Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), head of the Illinois Black Panther Party, is a charismatic revolutionary
leader. At the direction of a paranoid J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen) who fears the rise of a Black Messiah, FBI agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) plants petty criminal William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield) into the Party to track Hampton from the inside. Although O’Neal lives in fear of discovery, he cannot escape the deadly trajectory of his betrayal.
CAST & CREW: STARRING Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Algee Smith, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lil Rey Howery, Dominique Thorne and Martin Sheen; DIRECTED BY Shaka King; SCREENPLAY BY Will Berson & Shaka King, STORY BY Will Berson & Shaka King and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas; PRODUCED BY Ryan Coogler, p.g.a., Charles King, p.g.a., Shaka King, p.g.a. PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION: WARNER BROS. PICTURES Presents, In Association with MACRO, In Association with PARTICI-
PANT, In Association with BRON CREATIVE, A MACRO MEDIA / PROXIMITY MEDIA Production, A Film By SHAKA KING
SUMMARY: Chairman Fred Hampton, head of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panthers and an avowed revolutionary, understood
the power of speech and the constitutional right to exercise that freedom—that it’s the first amendment because it’s the most critical in defining and, if necessary, redefining, a democracy. His understanding and his exercising of that fundamental right made him so grave a perceived threat to the authorities—particularly FBI head J. Edgar Hoover—that they, at Hoover’s direction, sought not only to extinguish his voice, but to exterminate him, to silence him forever and, with him, one of the loudest voices of the Black Panther Party and the Black Power Movement. In Judas and the Black Messiah, writer/director Shaka King and fellow writers Will Berson and Kenny Lucas & Keith Lucas, inspired by these true events, tell the story of how the FBI manipulated naïve petty criminal William O’Neal to infiltrate the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panthers, which ultimately led to Hampton’s assassination at the hands of the government. King and his fellow writers’ hope is to ensure that we all find inspiration in the life and tragic death of Fred Hampton and speak out against oppression and injustice wherever we may find it.

SOUND OF METAL
SYNOPSIS: The life of an itinerant punk-metal drummer begins to unravel when he suddenly loses his hearing, and with it, his
identity.
CAST & CREW: STARRING: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff and Mathieu Almaric. DIRECTED BY: Darius Marder. WRITTEN BY: Darius Marder and Abraham Marder. PRODUCED BY: Bert Hamelinck and Sacha Ben Harroche PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION: PRODUCTION: Caviar and Flat 7 DISTRIBUTION: Amazon Studios SUMMARY: After years of touring the country playing earsplitting drum solos in seedy bars and clubs, itinerant punk-metal
musician Ruben (Riz Ahmed) suddenly develops severe hearing loss. Worse, doctors tell him his condition is likely to quickly deteriorate. Scared and unable to hide what he’s experiencing from bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) any longer, the recovering heroin addict agrees to check in to a secluded sober house for the deaf, hoping to head off a relapse as he learns to adapt to his new situation. Reluctantly adopting the community’s lifestyle, Ruben settles into a routine of learning American Sign Language (ASL), writing and teaching deaf children to play the drums. The house’s no-nonsense manager Joe (Paul Raci) promises him that if he continues to live by the group’s rules, his life will be as full as it ever was — perhaps fuller. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. A deeply experiential journey into a rarely examined world, Sound of Metal is grounded in a searing performance by Ahmed and daring and innovative sound design conceived by director Darius Marder and executed by sound designer Nicolas Becker.
“Immerses you in a noiseless world–but Riz Ahmed’s performance makes it speak volumes loudly and clearly”

THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY
SYNOPSIS/ SUMMARY: The legendary Billie Holiday, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, spent much of her career
being adored by fans across the globe. Screenplay writer Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, pens this intimate tale of a fierce trailblazer whose defiance through music helped usher in the civil rights movement.
