Crossing Energy Frontiers

Your ideas may be our solutions of tomorrow We are looking for people who have the courage to set ambitious targets, embrace innovation and deliver on promises to extend our reach. Who are we?

We are an international energy company with operations in 37 countries. Building on 40 years of experience from oil and gas production on the Norwegian continental shelf, we are committed to accommodating the world’s energy needs in a responsible manner, applying technology and creating innovative business solutions. Statoil is headquartered in Norway with 21,000 employees worldwide, and is listed on the New York and Oslo stock exchanges.

Do you remember when you made new discoveries every day? We still do.

Statoil Canada’s oil sands operations consist of the Leismer Demonstration Plant in the Athabasca region of Northeastern Alberta, Canada. The Leismer facility serves as a learning platform for Statoil’s future development of our Kai Kos Dehseh oil sands leases. Our lease area measures 1,129 square kilometers (610 square miles). In Newfoundland and Labrador, our ambitions are to become a producing operator, while gaining knowledge about the region’s sub-arctic conditions. We are a partner in the Terra Nova (15%) and Hibernia (5%) fields, as well as the Hebron (9.7%) and in the Hibernia Southern Extension (10.5%) field developments. As a leading acreage holder, Statoil is operator of four significant discovery licenses (SDLs) and seven exploration licenses (ELs) covering a total area of 11,000 km2.

At Cenovus, that feeling is present in everything we do. And in everyone we hire.

Want to be one of us? We welcome you to apply at www.statoil.com/careers

We’re looking for fresh and unique perspectives. Because it’s more than just developing the energy resources our world needs. It’s how we do it. Discover the possibilities at cenovus.com

Final Pieces of Advice? Start the job hunt early. Seriously. Yes, you. Okay, it is alright to enjoy your first few weeks back at university and overindulge in debilitating frothy beverages – that is an important part of university too. But getting a jump on your fellow classmates when it comes to applying to summer/new graduate positions is absolutely vital to you securing a great job. Keep your eyes out in September and October for those great opportunities in the summer! That’s right – it’s early. You will thank yourself later when you have a sweet job lined for the summer by mid-November and your buddies are stressing over where all the jobs went by the time March rolls around. All the best to you and your search. Sincerely, Your dedicated Career Services team.

An Active

Job Search

L

ooking for your first meaningful job can be a drag, and is one of the most challenging things you will do in your adult life. Here are some simple suggestions to help you in your job search.

First, you should have a positive attitude. During your job search you will get hung up on, you will receive rejection emails and letters, and you will be told that another candidate was recruited with more experience than you. Treat these rejections as mini-triumphs, as the job search process is great experience with many lessons to be learned, which will bring you closer to securing employment. When children learn to walk they fall, but they get right back up again, and I encourage you to do the same throughout your exploration for that perfect opportunity. Trust me, everyone has experienced rejection, and instead of becoming discouraged, it is important to learn from the process and look at it as being one step closer to your dream job.

Remaining positive and reminding yourself of the invaluable skills you can provide to the workplace is important when searching for employment. Know exactly what your skills and strengths are and be prepared to share, discuss and provide examples of applying these skills in the workplace. As a Career Specialist, I provide guidance to students in conducting an active job search, as I believe it is important in conducting an effective one. After you determine what direction you want to go in your career, the next step is to grow your network and begin contacting professionals that can assist you. 8/23/201 NY023226B 4 TMP PRODUCTION Like it or not, most jobs and job leads3.75 arex 4.75” found through networking, and that is reality. MAMILLER jb/sc/sc/rv

Finding that first job may be hard, but finding your second job is a little easier and it will continue to get easier as long as you keep networking, remain active in your job search, and stay positive. ■

ou’ve found it. That great job description that entices you to submit an application they just won’t be able to refuse. Now, what are they really looking for? Wellprepared resumes and cover letters are those that are best targeted, and will get you through the screening process. Understanding what the employer wants, through their posting, is the critical first step. You’ll begin by determining if you have enough of the qualifications listed to create a competitive application. Remember, their ad is describing the ideal candidate, who may not exist. The successful applicant may have 80% of the desired skills listed. So if you’ve got the majority of them, give it a shot.

Now, pull out your highlighter . . . as you scan the skills, experience and qualifications you may see key phrases repeated. Create two columns, listing the employer’s needs in one and your competencies in the other. This will help you to prioritize in writing your documents, and keep you focused on what they are communicating. You should also consider the following, which may be less obvious:

place holder for halliburton?

Discover how the skills, experiences, and relationships you build at PwC are career defining.

What qualifications do they really need?

“Never underestimate what you’ve got to offer,” advises Neil Horton, Human Resource Consultant with Children and Youth Services, Alberta Government. “Don’t exaggerate either; an HR person can recognize that right away. It’s a balancing act.” The obvious next steps include reading the posting through again, slowly. Take particular note of the closing date and time, and aim to apply at least a day early. Online systems can be interrupted and if you’re submitting hard copy, it could be the worst traffic day yet!

Reading a Job Posting

Whether or not their requirements are firm. A recruiter from the Public Service Commission, Federal Government, recently told us that their specifications are absolute. Many however, are flexible on requirements. Ken Clarke, Fitness Centre Director at the Glencoe Club shares, “If you don’t have one qualification, show some others that may be relevant.” Look at the language – ‘Must have’ does not mean the same as ‘desired’ . . . ‘Working knowledge’ is more basic than ‘highly proficient’ and ‘entry level’ may indicate someone in their first couple of years after graduation, whereas ‘experienced’ usually indicates three or more years. Include the exact wording or key phrases, as large companies do utilize scanning software to reduce the number of applications reviewed by precious human hours. Be careful though, to add your specific experience, back up your claims with evidence and not just ‘parrot’ their phrases. What you won’t see in many instances is information regarding salary. You can research typical ranges for similar jobs at such sites as www.alis.alberta.ca or www.wowjobs.ca.

Remember, your task is to make it easy for them to see what a terrific match you are! Thorough research and preparation can give you the competitive edge, and more confidence when you land that interview. ■ 2012 Science & Engineering

The Challenge Creating an innovative, responsible oil sands business

BP Growing in new directions

You Developing a world class career

Kiewit Corporation is one of North America's largest and most respected construction, engineering and mining organizations. With more than $10 billion in revenue, this privately held, employee-owned company operates through a network of business units called districts. Kiewit consistently ranks as a FORTUNE 500 company and in the top five among Engineering New-Record's Top 400 Contractors. With its beginnings tracing back to 1884, Kiewit offers services in a variety of markets including transportation, buildings, water resources, power, underground, oil and gas, electrical, mining and marine.

IN THIS JOB, EVERY CHALLENGE IS AN

OPPORTUNITY TO GO FURTHER, FASTER

We’re hiring bright new talent.

The Western Canada District conducts its operations primarily through Peter Kiewit Sons Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation. We perform work throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Our work includes highways and bridges, airports, mass transit systems, site development, dams, industrial plants, mechanical installations and hydroelectric plants.

Here at BP Canada we’re growing. We’re applying the world’s best technology and talent to discover the energy potential in the Canadian Oil Sands and beyond. Now we need more educated graduates to help build our future, and deliver these precious resources in the most effective, innovative and responsible way. It’s the perfect time to kickoff a successful career by joining us on our journey. We have a wide variety of opportunities available, especially for talent with an understanding of SAGD and knowledge of Alberta’s energy industry. Whatever role you play, you’ll have the opportunity to be part of multiple world-class projects.

Kiewit Energy Canada Corp. specializes in large, complex, integrated industrial/mechanical/electrical projects. Our projects involve construction of oil sands processing facilities, refinery expansions, gas plant expansions, co-generation facilities, major mine developments, spool fabrication facilities and SAGD facilities.

Today’s oil and gas companies face bigger challenges in the field than ever before. With smaller accumulations, unconventional reserves and older fields, oil and gas resources grow increasingly difficult to find, access and produce. Through focused innovation, we work to address specifically identified customer needs, solve unique project challenges and develop next-generation technologies. We currently hold more than 4,000 active patents. With your help, we will advance with solutions that will change the industry and the world.

We’re proud to employ some of the most skilled and dedicated people in the energy industry. You’ll learn from them, and help to create a secure energy future both locally and globally. We’ll give you the opportunity to build your career and encourage you to realize your own amazing potential.
