On 12 July, Ruda Landman led an enticing book discussion with the authors during the annual Free State Literary Festival. The official book launch took place on 27 July as part of the IRSJ’s ‘Fifth Anniversary Reflections’. SMB also designed and produced the booklets for this prestigious event. 978-1-920382-60-5 | R350 NON-RACIALISM IN SOUTH AFRICA: The life and times of Neville Alexander – Allan Zinn At the time of his death in August 2012, Neville Alexander was undoubtedly one of South Africa’s foremost proponents of the philosophy of non-racialism. He had devoted his life to fighting against the evils of racism, sexism and economic injustice. Published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch, this volume brings together the reflections of a group of activists and scholars on the significance of Neville Alexander to the cause of freedom and justice in South Africa. The reflections are essentially the keynote speeches and the responses to them that were made at a conference held in Alexander’s honour in July 2013. 978-1-928314-05-9 | R250 BEAUTY OF THE HEART: The life and times of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – Zubeida Jaffer This publication was launched in Cape Town on 14 July and at the University of the Free State (UFS) on 26 July. The enlightening discussions were panelled by the author Zubeida Jaffer, prof Jonathan Jansen (Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the UFS), and Dr Thozama April. By using her insightful journalism skills, Jaffer succeeds in bringing an ode to Charlotte Maxeke. This remarkable figure became the first black South African woman to obtain a BSc degree in 1901 at Wilberforce University, Ohio. Published by SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein. 978-1-920382827 | R230

ISBN 978-1-928357-09-4 | Price: R225
REGIONAL INNOVATION: Government policies and the role of Higher Education Institutions – Patrick Dubarle & Yali Woyessa This latest SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein (SUN PRESS) publication provides an excellent analysis of regional innovation policy issues and developments. A NECKLACE OF SPRINGBOK EARS: /Xam orality and South African literature – Helize van Vuuren All that remains of most of the 29 San Bushmen languages that were once spoken in Southern Africa, is archaeological evidence and rock art – and the slim archives recorded by individuals. This study brings together the texts and recollections of people like Wilhelm Bleek, Lucy Lloyd and GR von Wielligh, long after the last dancing rattle and necklace has crumbled to dust. The cosmology embedded in the /Xam myths from the region between the Cederberg and the Gariep (or Orange) River, seems to share much with contemporary consciousness: humankind should first recognise the interdependence of all life in order to survive. Published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch (SUN PRESS). ISBN 978-1-920689-89-6 | Price: R350

THE HISTORY OF GEOPHYSICS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA – Johan H de Beer Geophysics is a comparatively young science which only evolved as a distinct discipline during the 19th century. However, its phenomena (like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and lightning) had been objects of fear, curiosity and speculation since ancient times. In this book, Johan de Beer and his research team reveal that geophysical activity in South Africa can be traced back to as early as 1488. This is a truly astonishing revelation which deserves to be firmly entrenched as part of the country’s proud history. The book also discusses the history and formation of South African geophysical institutions that made a huge and seldom acknowledged contribution to the technological development of southern Africa. This is a SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch publication. MAGGIE LAUBSER: ’n Venster op Altyd Lig
– Muller Ballot
Hierdie publikasie is uitgegee deur SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch. THE SCHOLARSHIP OF TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: On its Constitution and Transformative Potential – Shirley Booth & Laurie Woollacott (Eds) SUN MeDIA MeTRO recently published this latest addition to the SUN PRESS series, Research into Higher Education. The book provides both theoretical and practical insights that should be of interest to many scholars and practitioners of the Scholarship of Teaching and Training (SoTL). The theme of teaching and learning, and SoTL as fundamentally communicative acts, connect the entire volume. It is a useful and critical frame for future scholarships, and the case studies from South Africa and Sweden offer new perspectives. PUBLIC OPEN SPACE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT IN PREVIOUSLY NEGLECTED TOWNSHIPS – Yandisa Bavulele Mashalaba The focus of this research is on the use of urban open spaces in the revitalisation of Galeshewe Township, Kimberley. It offers an in-depth analysis of community perceptions, the provision of open space, land use planning, and development of urban open spaces in the township. This publication was designed and produced by SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein. Although the act of preaching may take on various forms, Johan Cilliers – professor in Homiletics and Liturgy at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Theology – takes a look at preaching as being an event in space and time. Aesthetical-theological concepts such as space and time are innovatively combined with the sensory experiences, like preaching as hearing and preaching as seeing. A Space for Grace truly is an inspiring aesthetic combination of academic reflection, art works and sermons. This book was published by SUN MeDIA Stellenbosch.
